An Asian gaming powerhouse is planning a $2 billion Asian-themed mega-resort on the Las Vegas Strip where the old Stardust was imploded and the stalled Echelon was planned.

Genting Group plans to build the 3,500-room Chinese-themed resort with a 175,000-square-foot casino. The company calls it the “first phase” of a property to be named Resorts World Las Vegas.

The company plans to build a replica of the Great Wall of China and develop an enclosure for pandas for public display.

Executives for the Genting Group, a Malaysian multinational company considered a gaming industry powerhouse in Asia, were introduced at a news conference this morning attended by Gov. Brian Sandoval, Clark County Commissioners Steve Sisolak and Chris Giunchigliani and local business leaders.

Boyd Gaming, the Las Vegas company that started and stopped construction of a resort it called Echelon, is selling the 87-acre site for $350 million to Genting, which says it will spend between $2 billion and $7 billion by the time the project is complete. The land sale is scheduled to close today.

The groundbreaking is planned for 2014, with the first phase opening in 2016. Technically, the project already is under way because Genting plans to use some of the Echelon superstructure already in place.

Phase 1 of the project will be 8 million square feet, with at least 3,500 rooms, 210,000 square feet of dining, 250,000 square feet of retail space, more than 500,000 square feet of convention space, a 4,000-seat theater, and 300,000 square feet of pool and water park features.

According to a release issued by Genting, the casino space would be spread across several gaming floors, and several luxury restaurants and retail stores are planned.

Nice shots, the drills probably mean the foundation work is starting.

Echelon at 650ft will be a bit taller than both the 2 Wynn towers and the Palazzo in the background, which themselves are by no means small.

think they could have done something better. it is nothing great, especially confronting it with the other grat projects coming up around the city.

With Echelon, the attention will be on the details. The building materials and claddings will be unusual and unique. This is a project that will look much much better in person than on paper. Can't wait.:banana:

the hotel and suite tower look great, the delano/mondrian complex looks interesting, but the shangri-la stump they tried to sneak into the crack between the two main towers looks, at this point anyway, very misguided. the main entrance also looks a bit bland and suburban. but it has yet to go vertical so we can reserve true judgment for later. i do really like the hotel/suite towers.

That's such a beautiful design. I love those curves. A wave -like design seems to be very popular in Vegas.

You'd have to rent a room pretty high to get a proper shot of the site from there. Maybe one of the visiting forumers can get a room there and bring their camera. I'm just gonna keep shooting from the Circus Circus south garage until the buildings get some height because that has the best view of the actual work going on without renting a room.

i have a question for las vegas people: when all the old casinos are destroyed, are the signs kept in operation? for instance, the glitzy stardust sign, is it going to be trashed or maintained? i really hope they keep all those cool old signs and take care of them.

All the old signs are carefully dismantled and moved to the Neon Graveyard. Several of the old signs have been fully restored, then moved to the Neon Museum downtown.

Those types of accidents will always happen. It gets hot, you get tired, and you make a mistake and in construction a mistake can kill you.

The company also posted lower second-quarter profit as the U.S. economic slowdown reduced gambling revenue.

The company also said it has decided to delay the construction of Echelon due to the challenging economic environment. It plans to resume construction in three or four quarters, assuming credit market conditions and economic outlook improves.

Boyd had been paying quarterly dividends of 15 cents per share.

Boyd reported net income of $21.7 million, or 25 cents a share, compared with $22.1 million, or 25 cents per share, a year earlier.

Income from continuing operations slipped to 25 cents a share in the quarter from 26 cents a share a year before.

The Genting Group announced Monday that it is buying the site where Boyd Gaming Corp.'s partially built Echelon project has gathered dust for four years.

Genting says it will build a multi-billion dollar casino, its first in Las Vegas, on the 87-acre site.

The "Resorts World Las Vegas" project will feature 3,500 hotel rooms, a convention center and a 4,000-seat theater.

In the last photo here, it shows that this had about 5 floors built when it was put on-hold. So are they going to demolish them and restart or proceed with the existing plan?

I've found a new rendering, looks a lot like the color of the Wynn and Encore Towers, to much brown for my liking, I wish they would've kept a lighter color scheme, although It seems that a new Asian type resort will be going up as Imperial Palace is being renovated and changed.

The whole complex, especially the Chinese city, appears to be absolutely marvelous. It looks like Vegas may be returning to the theme casino trend which is always fun.
