View Full Version : South African celebreties overseas
Llanfairpwllgwy-ngyllgogerychwy-rndrobwllllanty-siliogogogoch June 28th, 2007, 11:20 AM How many stars/famous S-African people are making it overseas without being famous in the motherland ?
For example, one of Germany's biggest star and most popular singer at this moment is Xavier Naidoo. His father is Indian S-african, his mother German.
He sings mostly in German and one of his songs was the inspiration song for the German national team on the WC last year

Durbsboi June 28th, 2007, 12:50 PM Hmm I can think of one, Vincent Ebrahim. He is from Cape Town, stared in the hit British TV talk show the Kumar's at no: 42. He played Sanjeev's dad.

Wikipedia.org: Vincent Ebrahim is a British actor of Indian ethnicity. Born in South Africa, he studied drama at the University of Cape Town.
After immigrating to Britain in 1976, he spent a decade with a traveling theatre company, performing in plays such as Borderline by Hanif Kureishi. Since 1990, he has worked with Tara Arts, performing in such plays as Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Oedipus the King, Troilus and Cressida, and Antigone.
He is probably best known for playing Ashwin Kumar, the finance-obsessed father on The Kumars at No. 42
Also, he aint a celeb, but he was born in Durban.
Mark Gonzalez

His family moved to Chile when he was at a very young age, SAFA did confirm last year that they were to slow to lour him to play for Bafana, he was willing to play for his country of birth.
He enjoyed a decent year with Liverpool, netting an important goal on his debut to send Liverpool into the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, where they went on to reach the final & loose.

Yes, he is a player for Club Bruges in Belgium, played for FC Copenhagen before.
Thought he also plays in the Bafana team. But to call him a celeb.....
nelly_the_elephant June 28th, 2007, 01:47 PM South African midfield player! He plays for FC Bruges, Belgian team. They bought him from FC Kopenhagen. He sometimes gets invited to play for Bafana Bafana.
Rather small, very fast, good technique and hard, secure passing. At the beginning of his period in Bruges he had a rough time and he was also injured for a long time. However more and more he shows his capacities and he is now becoming one of the most popular players among the Bruges supporters. If he confirms next season he might very well get a transfer to one of the big european competitions.
To give you an idea about FC Bruges: they play home games for a crowd of about 25.000 (they plan on building a new stadium of 40.000 because the current is often sold out) and in the last couple of seasons they played twice in the Champions League. Most remarkable results: away win on AC Milan, home win against Ajax.
One of his best actions you can watch here

He scored one goal in a similar action (chosen most beautiful goal of the season by Bruges supporters) but the film on youtube is too long.
nelly_the_elephant June 28th, 2007, 01:51 PM But to call him a celeb.....
Question was: who is making it outside SA and is not known in SA. He's already very famous in Bruges:) , quite famous in Belgium and he might become famous in Europe. Just watch him in the future...
Llanfairpwllgwy-ngyllgogerychwy-rndrobwllllanty-siliogogogoch June 28th, 2007, 03:06 PM Bruges did rather bad last season, and to be honest the Belgium league is not among the best ones. Would be a surprise to me if he moved to a European top team, he lacks the real quality. For him I hope I am wrong;)

"rather" is an understatement, they did very bad! (But they did win the cup.)
On topic, he is more famous in Belgium than any of the people already named in this topic. (I must admit I don't know any of them) I don't think he has got it in him to move to a top team but he sure has the qualities to play in a top competition.
dysan1 June 28th, 2007, 04:46 PM ^^ haha this is turning into a belguim forum...thanx for the diversity guys!
Durbsboi June 29th, 2007, 09:03 AM Im sure there is plenty of guys making it big oversea's & are South African & we dont know about them. Like that dude from Aus, his a singer that came through a reality T.V show similar to idols, he was from Asherville in Durban & I think he won or came 2nd in the competition, they should play his songs on ECR, but thats about it, but my mate in Aus said he was quite big there at the time.
