are there any other GOOD and FREE 3d modeling software like sketch up around?

Try Blender. Its alot more sophisticated than sketch-up, and there is a plugin/hack that changes its interface to resemble 3dsmax. Gettings used to 3dsmax style interface could be valuable in the long term ;)

I had blender, & have no idea where to start.
