Huge park at Bukit Kiara, KL

By NG SI HOOI

KUALA LUMPUR: The 188.93ha public park, equivalent to the size of about 300 football fields, will be in Bukit Kiara here.

The biggest park in the country will be bounded by Taman Lembah Kiara in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, the KL Golf and Country Club, the Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club and Sri Hartamas, said Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting yesterday.

“The park is our own version of London’s Hyde Park or New York’s Central Park. The park will reflect Malaysia’s identity.

“It will be a sprawling green lung recreational park for city folks to relax in and enjoy Mother Nature. The park will change the image of the city as a concrete jungle,” Ong said.

He said the theme for the park was “design with nature” and not only the natural habitat of the area would be preserved but more trees would be planted too.

“We want to make sure this park retains its identity by adding more greenery to make it more attractive and environment friendly,” he said, adding that the Government would decide on the name of the park later.

He said the park would have various facilities, including jogging and bicycle paths, and space for people to have picnics or camp and courts for various sports like basketball,” he said.

“The public can take part in various activities such as hill climbing and biking, science exploration on flora and fauna, and study tours to the arboretum and herbarium,” he said.

A portion of the park will be reserved for research and development projects.

Ong said the planning and designing of the park would be done by the National Landscape Department under his ministry together with other related agencies including Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute.

He said the Cabinet approved the proposal presented by his ministry together with the Federal Territories Ministry on Wednesday, and his ministry would build and manage the park.

“The Cabinet feels that it should turn Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding areas to be a place for healthy living and a better sustainable environment for the people. We should save the limited green areas now before it is too late,” he said.

He said the park was on land owned by the Government as 146.3ha was under the purview of DBKL while the remaining area belonged to the Information Ministry.

Earlier, Ong, who is MCA president, opened the new four-storey building of SJK (C) Sam Yoke, which cost RM1.5mil.

The money was from public donations as well as raised by the MCA, besides an allocation from the Government.

KUALA LUMPUR, Fri:

The setting up of a 188.93-hectare recreational park, similar to that of Hyde Park in London, has been given the go-ahead by the cabinet.
Plans for the park had earlier been announced in March, but no location was revealed until Tuesday.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said the park would be a combination of a few pieces of government-owned land currently under the jurisdiction of the Information Ministry (40.5ha) and Kuala Lumpur City Council (142.27ha).

He said the cabinet had decided that the park would incorporate the Kiara Valley Park in Taman Tun Dr Ismail and all its northern areas, bordering Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club and Sri Hartamas on the east and Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in the south.

The different plots of land will be combined and gazetted under Section 62 of the National Land Code, which gives the government the right to reserve any land for public use.
"The government has plans to use the park to host international landscape festivals and exhibitions.

"Campsites, jogging trails and an animal reserve will also be incorporated into the park to woo visitors," Ong said in a statement.

He also said the park would be designed to put the environment first before recreation, adding that the park would retain most of its natural elements.

The development of the park will be carried out by his ministry through its National Landscape Department.

The cost of the project will be announced soon.

Currently Bukit Kiara is popular among hill bikers. It's basically so away from the city density. But I bet the view of the park would be great from Sprint. This would encourage developers to build higher apartments near the area and advertise 'Park View'

How much is 188 hectare is metric?

1 hectare=0.01 square km

So it's about 2 square km?

Doesn't seem that big to me.By Australian standards  .Anyway, better than nothing,KL needs more green lungs and parks.

Work on Bukit Kiara Public Park to begin next year

By LISA GOH

KUALA LUMPUR: The planned 188.93ha Bukit Kiara Public Park, which will be equivalent to the size of about 300 football fields, should begin groundwork by the first quarter of next year.

National Landscape Department director-general Datuk Ismail Ngah said that in the meantime, feedback will be gathered from various parties such as the experts, residents and non-governmental organisations, with its focus on the park's design.

"The park should take about three years to complete. We don't intend to rush it either as the site is very sensitive.

"The entire cost for the park will depend on its design, but the Cabinet has approved an initial sum of RM250mil for this project," Ismail told a press conference on Tuesday after launching the three-day Bukit Kiara Public Park Development Plan seminar at the Bangunan Bakti Siti Hasmah here.

He added that while other world famous parks such as London's Hyde Park, New York's Central Park and Australia's Kings Park would be used as reference for the Bukit Kiara park, it would still have a Malaysian identity.

"Our climate is very different from theirs, so we need to make it uniquely Malaysian.

"We are going to design it along with nature. We won't be uprooting the trees and replanting as with many other parks," he said.

He also said that the park would have many benefits for the people in the city - physically, emotionally and even economically.

"Parks add value to property prices, people look for such features when buying property," he said.

Kiara park to retain a Malaysian identity

A closer look: Ismail (left) having a look at the plans with the department’s deputy director (development) Mohd Taib Zin and University Putra Malaysia Design and Architecture faculty deputy dean Dr Osman Mohd Tahir (right).
“The entire cost for the park will depend on its design, but the Cabinet has approved an initial sum of RM250million for this project,” he said after launching the three-day Bukit Kiara Public Park Development Plan seminar at the Bangunan Bakti Siti Hasmah recently.

The area breakdown of the park is listed as Equestrian (25.32ha), Asia Broadcast Centre (42.62ha), DBKL Nursery (5.65ha), Botanical Garden/ Arboretum (99.16ha), and Kiara Valley Park (16.17ha).

In one of the seminar papers, it was also stated that the Kuala Lumpur City Council’s (DBKL) standards for the size of parks were as listed:

Playgrounds catering to less than 5,000 people (0.4ha - 1ha)

Neighbourhood park for 5,001 to 20,000 people (1.0ha - 10ha)

Local park for 20,001 to 50,000 people (10ha - 30ha)

City park for 50,001 to 500,000 people (40ha - 100ha)

Federal park for more than 500,000 people (>100ha)
Ismail added that while other world famous parks such as London’s Hyde Park, New York’s Central Park and Australia’s Kings Park would be used as reference for the Bukit Kiara park, it would still retain its Malaysian identity.

“Our climate is very different from theirs, so we need to make it uniquely Malaysian.

“We are going to design it along with nature.

“We won’t be uprooting the trees and replanting as with many other parks,” he said.

He added that the park would have many benefits for the people in the city - physically, emotionally and even economically.

Ismail also indicated that parks are value-added features for the prospective property buyers.
