Two Qataris face drug smuggling charges

DOHA • Two Qatari nationals were produced at the Criminal Court on Wednesday facing charges of trying to smuggle hashish into the court building.
The court listened to a witness who is a police officer. He told the court that he received information from a reliable source that the first accused would hand over the contraband to a prisoner inside the court building in Al Rayyan area.
Upon receiving the tip-off, the police officer sought the Public Prosecution's permission to set a trap for the accused in order to arrest him red-handed, Al Sharq reported.
"On the particular day when we were expecting the accused, he did not turn up. However, he turned up the following day accompanied by the second accused," the officer told the court.
The accused came out of his car after having parked it and then headed for the court building as the police watched them.
Once the duo reached the fourth floor of the court building, the police stopped them for a search. Angered, the first accused turned violent and resisted. The police officer was forced to draw his weapon to bring the suspect under control in order to carry out the search. However, nothing was found on his person.
The police, still suspicious, then saw the suspect's shoes seemed strange and had been clearly irregularly stitched. When the suspect was made to take his shoes off, the police found hashish packed inside.
The witness said the second accused admitted to him that the first accused had given him the shoes and asked him to hand them over to a prisoner inside the court building. But for being an accomplice, the first accused also had to admit to the charges against him.
When the witness was asked why he did not wait for the hashish to be actually handed over, the police officer said the arrest was according to a plan and permission received from the Interior Ministry's Anti-Drug Department.
The officer, however, could not name the prisoner for whom the contraband was intended.
The next hearing in the case will be in November.
