If the President doesn't use the F28, then who does?

The Presidential Management Staff (PMS). The last president to ride that plane as Kalayaan one was Joseph Estrada.

The little girls plane is this little jet leased from a Singapore-based aircraft lessor.

maybe it serves as a decoy... or maybe PGMA is just scared to ride her aging plane...:D
hmm, now that arianespace has said it, the security details of the president (when flying) has been compromised...:nuts:

I believe that the Vice President somestimes use this plane, its a waste that the Phil government spent a lot during the last heavy maintenance of this aircraft, we even have to pay for storage fees coz of delay in payment for the said service in Singapore. It might be a bit old, but a reliable one at that:)

So this basically means that since the year this airport opened, PAL has been fielding widebodies on the route (though they initially used 737s), first with A300s, then with 742s, then now with the motley of A330s, A340s and 744s.

Does this have anything to do with the fact that these planes don't need to refuel in GES just to get back to MNL?

Sometimes they do field two A320's in a day if ever these wide bodied jets are not available. GES has a refueling facility to support jets which are not capable of flying from MNL to GES and GES to MNL without refueling in GenSan... Cebu Pacific flies their A320's from MNL and refuels in GenSan before going back to MNL same with their A319 to Cebu....

It is. They went also to Indonesia for another D-check and was out early this year. I think it was March when the aircraft feels brand new again before GMA rode the plane to Bacolod as Kalayaan one sometime in May.

Personally, I would rather have this plane provided regular maintenance is there. Look, the United Kingdom, rich as they are, still maintains the old BAE-146 for Royal flights. Why can't we not do the same? Anyway, that is just me.:)

GenSan Airport is SMART Bro Hotzone now!

Great news to all outbound and inbound travellers using the General Santos City International Airport!

The GenSan International Airport which is to undergo a major rehab this year is now a WIFI HotZone!

We got this piece of information from an email from SMART Communications’ Haydee Bernabe. She further explained that the pre-departure and arrival terminals of the airport already have FREE Internet Access through SMART Bro, effective yesterday, September 17, 2009!

Wow! This means, passengers can surf the internet, check their email, chat, update their Facebooks with their laptops, PDAs or cellphones while waiting for their flights at the pre-departure areas or while waiting for their luggage at the arrival area. We just hope that the 2nd floor coffee shop run by Family Country Hotel and Convention Center is also within the range of Smart Bro’s Wifi Hotzone.

SMART Bro, a major supporter of the recently concluded 2009 GenSan Tuna Festval Xperience is also responsible for making the GenSan City Hall Lobby the first government WIFI Hotzone in Region 12 in March of last year.

With this development, plus the major rehab it will undergo this year, there is no doubt that the GenSan International Airport is well on its way to becoming one the country’s “Most Passenger Friendly Airports” in the coming months.

Again, thanks to the generosity of SMART Bro who keep on springing surprises for the people of GenSan.

^^ So that makes it three airports that have Wi-Fi (MNL not included since it doesn't work). Hopefully ILO and BCD will have Wi-Fi facilities in the future, and perhaps ZAM as well.

I guess this developments show that GenSan is truly one of the most important airports in the country and a rumor says that the Airport will be equipped with aerobridges which will be included in the 2010 budget for the airport's upgrade...

GenSantos airport doesn't look too bad outside, I think the interior like I mentioned before needs a bit of a facelift, you can tell it's getting old. I can spot some areas where the wall paint expecially that one post in the baggage claim area is fading out already and those wooden divider, together with the bamboos isn't helping any.

Iba ang concept ng province ng mga pinoy ano? Sa akin, pagsinabing province, yuong buong area or district, halimbawa, sa Canada, Ontario - province, first major city Toronto, windsor smaller town or city, Toronto ang parang capital nila. Winnepeg - Manitoba capital. Iba siguro ang usapan pag sinabing ang GenSan ay bario kase hindi siya bario kung hindi isang Ciudad or City.

Ang ganda ng FA ng Cebu Pacific diyan sa flight mo Mr Avenger a.

Nice photos of the airport as well. I guess the departure lounge isn't too bad, just a bit old already. Maybe it's just the quality of the picture that didn't do justice on the pics, but man, it did a very good job on the FA and PAL's plane.

Oh, the concessionaire inside the predeparture lounge looks bad I think. They do needed some new chairs and repaint the walls with new flooring as well.

Are there any regular international service in and out of GenSan? I noticed that you wrote Gen San International Airport.

I guess the interior light in the departure lounge is not enough hence the pictures is not so nice.

Anyhow Gensan Airport really needed a facelift. I have seen the Tambler Airport in the year 2000 when I first visited Gensan, and that time the Airport Terminal looks so nice. Well it just need some minor repairs and some

According to Wikipedia, the Tambler Airport is a secondary International Airport.

General Santos International Airport (Filipino: Paliparang Pandaigdig ng Heneral Santos, Cebuano: Tugpahanang Pangkalibutanon sa Heneral Santos) (IATA: GES, ICAO: RPMR) is an airport serving the general area of General Santos City, located in the province of South Cotabato in the Philippines. The airport is classified as a secondary international airport by the Air Transportation Office, a body of the Department of Transportation and Communications that is responsible for the operations of not only this airport but also of all other airports in the Philippines except the major international airports.

CEB begins double daily flights to General Santos

The Philippines’ leading airline Cebu Pacific (CEB) started twice daily flights last October 25 to offer more alternatives to travelers in the South Cotabato area.

This new frequency gives passengers a choice between morning flights that leave General Santos every 9:20am and leaves Manila every 7:00am, and afternoon flights that depart General Santos at 2:50pm and departs Manila at 12:30pm.

CEB also flies from General Santos to Cebu every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The lowest possible year-round ‘Go Lite’ fare for the General Santos-Manila route is P1,988. For the General Santos-Cebu route, it’s P1,188. Passengers with check-in luggage will just add P100 upon booking.

“Cebu Pacific offers the most routes and destinations in the Philippines. By increasing the frequencies of our General Santos flights, we hope to stimulate the market in the SOCCSKSARGEN region, especially with our trademark low fares. Hopefully, the tourism and economy of General Santos and surrounding areas can be boosted with our new twice daily flights,” said Candice Iyog, CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution.

“Passengers who wish to book online but don’t have credit cards may still do so and pay through our partner banks via ATM or over-the-counter transactions. We encourage our passengers to book early so they can get the lowest possible fares for their desired CEB flights,” she added.

For more information, visit the website at www.cebupacificair.com or call the reservation hotline (02)7020-888 or (032)230-8888.

Gokongwei-owned CEB flies to 32 domestic and 14 international destinations, using one of the youngest fleets of aircraft in Asia. Since its inception in 1996, it has flown over 36 million passengers, making it the third largest low-cost carrier in Asia.

Sad isn't it? From the previous pics we got before, the whole structure itself is not really in very bad condition, it just needed simple maintenance such as repainting and minor repairs. Why is it hard for any airport management in the Philippines to keep these up?

P40-million upgrade of GenSan airport to start in two months

R. S. Sarmiento
BusinessWorld
http://www.bworldonline.com/BW061809/content.php?id=053

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — The General Santos City International Airport is set to get a major facelift worth P40 million, with work to start in the next two months, a ranking aviation official said yesterday.

This will be the first major improvement for the facility since it started operating 13 years ago, said Nathaniel Y. Nazareno, the Civil Aviation Authority’s chief here.

He said announcement of the winner of the bidding for this project is expected in 30 days.

The airport gets just P2 million monthly for its upkeep, including allocation for personnel salary, Mr. Nazareno said, adding they have not increased the P40 terminal fee charged to flyers.

President Gloria M. Arroyo said during her visit in nearby Koronadal City last week that renovation work at the airport here would cost at total of P121 million. Some P40 million of that was included in the 2009 budget of the Department of Transportation and Communication and the P81 million would be included in the department’s 2010 budget, the President said.

Mr. Nazareno said the P40 million would be used to expand the floor area of the passenger terminal and the perimeter fence of the airport as part of the security precautions.

Looks so dry around Gen Santos even during this time of the year?

The terminal building needs some rehabilitation and facelift badly. The backside at the tarmac end and the surrounding area looks alright but the facade and most of the interior looks like in a real bad shape. The are planning to renovate sometime soon right? I hope it will push through.

Are the navigational aids and the small things likelights, markings etc on the runway at par with the new airports such as ILO and BCD?

Im not an experts on airports pero id rather na within standards lang ang runway length pero maganda ang equipment sa airport rather than a runway na sobra sa standard pero kulang sa kagamitan ang airport..kasi aanhin ko naman ang extra few hundred meters or so if the shorter runway will do diba?

like in the case of ILO, mas gusto ko pang gamitin ang airport ng iloilo kahit mas mahaba ang runway ng gensan kasi ang sa iloilo kahit mas maikli ang runway eh tama lang din naman ang haba nito sa requirements ng mga eroplano na ginagamit dun

Unfortunately, just like ILO and BCD, GenSan Airport is also equipped with the same navigational aids as GenSan can also do handle night flights. Also, GenSan Airport is 10 and 11 years older than Ilo Ilo and Bacolod Airports resp. Which means that the navigational equipments in GenSan is older than those installed in BCD and ILO. However, GES will undergo a major facelift and new nav. equips. will also be installed... I guess after the modernization, GenSan Airport will live up to it's official name - General Santos International Airport.

yes we all remember that. but what is the use of a very long runway, when d naman gaano ka rami ang flights. that runway becomes a white elephant.

Gensan airport was built by US Agency for International Developments with long and very thick hardened runway that can accomodate very heavy US military jets or heavy passenger jets. It is not actually a white elephant because the Americans envision it for their future use, incase of war in the Southeast Asian region.

For the meantime, we can use the runway and just needed to upgrade or built another Flight Terminal.

yeah maybe when the airport passenger movement reaches mga 500k annual passengers baka ma prioritize ang Gensan terminal renovation..

So for now, yeah id rather have a good terminal and standard runway than a "world class" runway pero dilapidated ang terminal

1. Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Manila)- 22,253,918

2. Mactan-Cebu International Airport (Cebu)- 3,642,862

3. Francisco Bangoy International Airport (Davao) – 1,692,877

4. Iloilo International Airport (Iloilo) – 1,073,907

5. Lumbia Airport (CDO) – 902,184

6. Bacolod-Silay International Airport (Bacolod)- 843,488

7. Godofredo Ramos Airport (Caticlan) – 761,961

8. Daniel Romualdes Airport (Tacloban) – 627,201

9. Puerto Princesa Airport (Puerto Princesa) – 481,756

10. Zamboanga International Airport (Zamboanga) – 469,540

^^ Cguro nga. Naka-abot na ba ng 500K ang annual passenger volume ng Gensan? Knowing na major domestic airlines increased their flight frequencies to the city??

Well to increase the volume is synonymous to increasing the economic activity of the area - to create a demand for flying in to the city.. :D (my two cents worth lang)

yeah i know that since time-in-memorial. but until that time comes when the americans actually use that runway that they built extensively, its still a white elephant.

also, dont forget that all international airports in this country have long ang very thick hardened runway like GES. its just that some are just a tad shorter and actually have more flights that GES.

Might I also emphasize na ang runway ng gensan is capable of landing WIDE-bodied jets... :-) B747 and A380 kaya... :-) Renovation and expansion of terminal lang kulang... gensan airport is also strategic in its location... bound by sarangani and south cotabato provinces... this is a gateway to southern mindanao... huge planes doesn't always mean there are a lot of passengers...one widebody could be equal to 2 or 3 narrowbody (gagmay) aircrafts...so a small airport having 3 narrowbody flights is equal to like 1 widebody flight...

pasensya na, my recent attitude against GES was just a reaction to this post

Mas ok na di gaano maganda terminal basta world class ang runway... Kesa naman maganda ang terminal, pangit naman ang runway... Saka next year na mag start ang renovation and expansion ng terminal ng gensan..

which i felt was full of bias and bitterness lang..but yes lets move on

When I was in Gensan way back in 2003, I considered its airport terminal as much better and beautiful than the rest of the country's airports, especially Iloilo's, which was still in Mandurriao.

The view from the departure lounge was beautiful - I presume it still is. But judging from the discussions here, it is sad to know that the Gensan airport was not maintained properly. I hope the new Iloilo airport - which is the most beautiful now in the country (pardon my bias ;) ) - will not suffer the same neglect.

huge planes doesn't always mean there are a lot of passengers...one widebody could be equal to 2 or 3 narrowbody (gagmay) aircrafts...so a small airport having 3 narrowbody flights is equal to like 1 widebody flight...

:-) youre right... but my point is about safety...

^^ ay pero gusto ko pa rin ng may boarding bridge hehe...but I hope DOTC emphasizes uniqueness din sa mga new airports natin esp sa mga major cities and wag yung generic designs..

it pains me to see na they are missing the opportunity to come up with something good sa mga planned new airport and instead they went for similar looking airports (ie NBSA, TAC and Laguindingan) sayang na sayang talaga

Sana pag-isipan nilang mabuti and the design should have something to do with the city's character/soul/culture or whatever

I hope if and when they do decide to renovate GES terminal eh i take into consideration nila ang character ng Gensan (tuna perhaps?)

January 9th, 2010, 04:01 AM
^^ One problem I foresee about building an airport like CGK in the Philippines, is the issue of land shortage alloted. Most Philippine cities' existing airports are already fenced-in by urban/suburban development and have limited room for expansion. Now, unless they totally build a whole new airport complex like that of the new airports of ILO and BCD, then there is a chance that an airport complex like CGK can be implemented, replete with lush gardens and other environmental accoutrements that compliments the overall airport complex's design and function.

But with regards to GES, I think they do have ample space to do this. :colgate:

You are asking a classified information. US Military flights to Zamboanga is not even posted much more included in the statistics other than as part of the Philippine military traffic. Di ra pod kuyaw. It is just a military flight. You just can't distinguish if its PAF or USAF. But if you have keen eyes you can identify some of them by the Nxxxxx registry of their covert civilian planes. Others however have distinct markings like USAF or United States of America. Except for Clark, Cebu and Zamboanga, those with markings often land at night in some of Mindanao's airport.

USAF planes(turboprops)used for intelligence gathering are painted in non-descript colours(normally all grey)with no unit markings except their registrations. Its interesting arianspace that you mentioned "covert civilian planes".I can not help but mention that "covert operations" are synonimous with the CIA.While the presence of US forces are meant for an "advisory capacity" only, one can wonder why the amount of logistics?
Also, the involvement of US forces in training exercises may justify the issue of the legitimacy of their presence yet we do get unconfirmed reports of UAV's crashed or disabled somewhere or shot down as claimed by local insurgents.Gensan may or may not be the staging point of these covert or special ops flight but for sure its being used as a transit point. The hive of all military flights is Edwin Andrews Air Base in Zamboanga but lets note Western Mindanao command is in Davao. The USAF should at least offer courtesy flights to the Filipino commanders; maybe Maj.Gen. Lacson will be spared.

Its interesting you brought this up because in Southcom, there is a military base within a military base. In EAAB, there is also an airforce base within an airforce base. The irony is that the US facilities are off limits to AFP. Even the camp or base commander are not allowed to go inside without permission. At first, this was a source of friction until the DFA intervened. Our nobled Generals forgot that US military installations are extensions of their territory, so too are their aircraft and vessels that setting foot on it means you are no longer on Philippine territory legally even if in reality you were, and there you will be under the jurisdiction and protection of the United States of America. In fact, the currency there is US dollars. This has been the military protocol whether you are in Australia, Europe or Japan. So if a PAF General wants to ride their plane he has to get permission from a Colonel who can always deny it. While at PAF, it is his discretion when and where to go as he is the one approving it. See the difference? By the way, the UAV that crashed in Maguindanao was flown in Awang and was brought by a USAF C-130J from Zamboanga. Imagine, the intercepted drone was denied coming from them until pictures surfaced of it having USAF tag.

C-130j's are typical fixtures in "intra-theatre" operations. C-17Globemasters are for strategic airlifts. If we add the UAV's, there's a good complement for counter insurgency operations(include the King Air 300s with sensor pods). Now I remember,Benito Ebuen AB(Mactan) of course is linked to this as well.Yes, that Chinook that crashed in Dumaguete was on its way to EAAB,unfortunately at the expense of a Navy SEAL unit or marines I believe. Therefore, this C-130j will be trotting bet. Zamboanga,Cotabato,GenSan,Davao, or Cebu to deliver equipment in these so called "training missions", while the Globemasters bring in heavy payload from Okinawa,Guam,or Hawaii. As for military protocol, even US officers forget themselves. This former Manila PAFSECOM chief told me, once a visiting USAF captain requested a subordinate to ask the chief to pay him a visit at some VIP lounge in the terminal. The Filipino colonel felt insulted and reminded the subordinate he holds a higher rank! so it should be the other way around.Of course this USAF captain didn't bother.

Cebu and Manila are expanding... Cebu now gets 4 daily flights to Incheon - 2 from Asiana, 1 from korean Air and 1 from Cebu Pacific..

Air China is coming in to Manila... But Davao, only Silk Air ever since.. hehehehe

^^ i heard about it as being built for military purposes richard, but here's the twist, it was not for abu sayaf. the first time i heard about it was 1996 (abu sayaf was a much smaller force then), the version i had was it was as an alternative base from subic and clark. now i'm just realizing this, the u.s. was thinking of probably 10-20 years ahead. so now they have this balikatan exercises somewhere in mindano. this i don't want push as a fact, just what i heard a decade ago.
Gensan, again was funded by USAID including its deep sea port(contracted by American companies to make sure the standard is applied). All educated people of South Cotabato who has a penchant for history and politics know these. You need to read a bit of the VFA (Visiting Forces Agreement) between the Phils and American Forces. The whole story summarizes to this: While the Americans are no longer allowed to establish fixed bases, they are still allowed to use facilities designed to accomodate all their aircraft and or vessels in their inventory for the "purpose of military exercises"(of course this can mean anything).Way back then, before the advent of so called terrorist, Gensan was expanding and has all this available land and suitable terrain for this kind infrastracture.Yes, the airport is designed to accomodate the b-52 and c-5a(largest aircraft in US inventory);thus the unique turn-around taxiway, and of course the port can handle an aircraft carrier.

GenSan International Airport Terminal’s P20million expansion commences[/B]

In what is to be the most simple blessing rites Bariles has ever come across with, the General Santos City International Airport was blessed and prayed over this morning of March 18, 2010 by Diocesan Priest Fr. Joseph Benitez to mark the start of its renovation and expansion.

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/8392/73870506.jpg

Present during the blessing and the ribbon cutting plus the wall-wrecking ceremonies which followed were Representative Darlene Antonino-Custodio of the 1st District of South Cotabato and General Santos City Mayor Jun Acharon. Playing host was Air Transport Office Manager for GenSan Nathaniel Nazareno.

http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/4571/93678585.jpg

"FR. JOSEPH BENITEZ BLESSES THE WALL TO BE TORN DOWN TO GIVE WAY TO THE BIGGER AND WIDER ARRIVAL AREA AND BAGGAGE CONVEYOR"

The renovation includes the improvement and renovation of the baggage area and the welcome area.

Accoring to ATO Manager Nathaniel Nazareno, the FIRST PHASE of the renovation work which will last from three to four months, and to cost P20million, includes the following:

The Improvement, widening and renovation of the BAGGAGE CLAIM and WELCOME AREA. A longer carousel to handle more incoming baggage and luggage and checked-in cargo from as many as two planes at once will replace the old one.
The improvement, widening and renovation of the CHECK-IN AREA which will include the setting up of a CONVEYOR behind the counters to immediately transport the luggage of departing passengers to the build-up area where they will be brought to the cargo compartment of the plane.
The improvement, widening and renovation of the PRE-DEPARTURE AREA to accommodate more seats for a projected surge in the volume of traffice in the coming months.

http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/1550/39572603.jpg

Representative Darlene Custodio and GenSan Mayor Jun Acharon cut the ribbon to signal the start of the expansion work on the GenSan Airport terminal building while ATO Manager Nathaniel Nazareno looks on.

The funds for the improvement of the GenSan International Airport which totals P121 million (READ BLOG POST HERE) was mainly through the efforts of Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio. This will be her legacy to the people of the Soccsksargen Area even as she leaves her seat after the May 2010 elections for a new mandate closer to her people.

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/7864/48155896.jpg

"Mayor Jun Acharon perform the ceremonial wall-breaking of one of the walls of the old Baggage-Claim and Welcome Area of the GenSan International Airport."

All these mean a more aesthetically beautiful and functional airport and as GenSan Mayor Jun Acharon quipped, “Now everyone who flies in and sees the new GenSan International Airport will really declare as soon as they alight from their planes, “WOW! MAGANDANG GENSAN NGA TALAGA!”
