Arts Center Celebrates 20 Years

TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a free public event, including entertainment and a cake served by community leaders.

The celebration will be at 6:30 p.m. July 14 at the center, 1010 N. MacInnes Place. There will be activities for all ages. Fred Johnson, who performed at the center's 1987 opening, will conclude the evening.

Judy Lisi is president of the center, which has drawn more than 10 million visitors to Broadway plays, operas and other performances since opening July 16, 1987.

Wow, that's quite an accomplishment for one of the (now) largest performing arts centers in the southeastern US. I remember taking field trips to the center in the early 90s, when the facility was just getting off its feet. I've probably seen at least a dozen shows at the center and I still remember a few of them pretty well. I also remember the countless times I went over the river via I-275 and saw the conservatory being constructed from the ground up. It's a really nice place now.
