With this many football (soccer) stadiums, Japan, probably, is the country with the most number of football stadiums in Asia or even the world!

OMG! These pictures seriously put sporting infrastructure in Japan into perspective.

First observation: Perhaps no other country has more stadiums with retractable roofs than Japan (well except, perhaps, the United States).

Second observation: All of these stadiums and sports domes are looking good. I'm guessing that a large chunk of budget is allocated for maintenance purposes.

Third observation: Based on those pics, all stadiums have its own character. I don't mean the mascots but, rather, the architectural designs.

Some great stadiums there, especially like the one in Niigata (i think, all the lovely photos on this page is seriously slowing down this laptop and I don't fancy checking back!), madly steep but also looks really atmospheric :okay: .
Some not so good grounds there as well, and a few too many running tracks inside some otherwise great bits of engineering - I just despise the things, leaves half the ground with a view that doesn't have to be as bad as it is (only time I have actually gone to a ground with one, there was one goal (by David Beckham no less), at the far end, and no-one near me had a clue it had gone in till the players started celebrating).

Out of interest, who pays to build most of these stadia, I'm guessing it will be local authorities rather than the teams themselves?

Oh, and one off-topic point, its always puzzled me why there are only 12 pro baseball teams in all of Japan, for a country with the population of Japan and it being the #1 sport, surely there would be scope for more teams than that? Would love it if someone could enlighten me on this one!

12 is good enough.
Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) has been declining in popularity so much. Baseball is still #1 sports in Japan IMO, but people are watching MLB on TV instead of NPB these days. Most of Tokyoites have no interest in the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants in today's environment.

Waaah, so many sport stadiums.

Does Japan really have this much money to construct hundreds of these things?!?!?!?!? Heck, I can't even imagine the cost of building just one stadium (millions of $$$ involved).

coldstar, u have any ideas as to how much Japan has spent for these sport stadiums (that are gargantuan in number)?

Japanese stadiums rule! And J-League is one of the best football leagues in the World, perhaps of the entire Universe, itīs so cool! I wish I could watch it more.

I also like the fact the Japanese are so thankful for brazilians helping them make football popular in Japan, so that some teams are a real homage to brazilian football, like for example Cerezo Osaka - my fav. Japanese team.

And you Japanese, do you follow our brazilian leagues? I hope yes, we need your support to help Corinthians return the Serie A in 2008!
