These are Egyptian highway pics ( very few of them ) taken by me during my trip there last year  I was on my way south from Cairo to Aswan ( took 20 hours by bus  ) . Egypt has very beautiful highways :)

Looks like the N1 concrete highway is getting a new coat of asphalt. It was announced that this highway will be widened by 1 lane on each side to help alleviate the traffic jam that plagues this highway which joins Pretoria (Capital City) and Johannesburg. Roughly 300,000 cars passes through this highway per day.

The Gautrain rapid rail link project ($3.5 billion project to be completed by 2010) is also meant to help solve this problem.

as for the police in morocco, the police uses mostly radars and camera's
when you get caught by the radar they will stop you later on

the traffic on the Pretoria - Johannesburg Ben Schoeman highway can be as bad as this. Its often called the largest parking lot in the Southern Hemisphere.

The stretch between Pretoria and Joburg is roughly 55 kilometers and sees around 320,000 cars pass on it per day. On a bad day during morning/evening peak hours, traffic can be packed like that on the entire highway from Pretoria to Joburg making what should be a 35 minute trip a 3 hour trip!!! This is why the Gautrain Rapid Rail link is being developed to try and solve this problem. The South african national roads agency (SANRAL) announced a week ago that they will spend $3 billion to try and widen this and other highways while connecting other highways to improve the traffic situation before 2010. The only challenge for the rapid rail system will be getting South Africans off their cars which they love very much.

one thing for sure moroccan highways are perfect for a road trip just make sure that ur car dont break down in the middle of nowhere, wide, sleek open(no conjestion), sa highways are just class . damn it i am jelous, lemmie vent off alittle bit. why cant kenyan roads be like that, we have the money the equipment, and the skilled workforce to get it done but for some damn stupid reason we just cant fix the traffic nightmare, The economy is growing in all kinds of sections but we dont want to fix the infrastructure that supports it because the current roads are in damn pathetic condition. there all kinds of planned highways to be built but it takes centuries to get the plans moving. the taxes kenyans pay are crazy, what devil cursed our ministry of roads and infrastructure. thay need someone to kick the living crap out of them or fire them i think in africa kenya has one of the worst roads given that it is one of the top 5 or 6 economies in africa coz S.A.N.E are getting it done, for crying out loud even ivory coast which haad a civil war has better roads than my country. dont get me wrong i love my country to death but the roads issue really pisses the hell out of me. if the roads and railway systems are fixed in kenya the effect will be felt in many areas of the daily life of a kenyan and the economy will actually boom because we lose so many busineses to sa just because of our ROADS!!! i hope and pray that the situation gets better

Africa needs to realize that infrastructure investment is key from power, roads, ports, water and class rooms!! I think there is also an element of people not taking enough risks and daring to dream and build things. Look at how far and wide guys like Nkrumah dreamed and they really looked far into the future in the way they built infrastructure. Sadly leaders like him are in short supply today.

Gas stations are normally placed on each side of the highway in intervals of between 80-100 kilometers along each national highway. There is normally things like bathrooms, restaurants etc to enable long distance travelers to unwind.

Man, I was thinking the same thing. I honestly have to confess that SAīs highways are really well-developped, well mantained (!!!) and smooth. Other countries in Africa (including Nigeria - apart from Abuja) still have a very long way to go until they reach South African standard highways! With all the money stolen by devilish creatures like Abacha and the like, Nigeria could have built very nice and large urban and interregional highways criss-crossing our cities and even country, it is such a shame! Damn:bash: :bash:

Well, letīs just look forward now and no longer back īcos it is the future we can influence in a positive way and no longer the shameful past.

I think we have the previous apartheid government to thank who made significant investments in the early 1960s and 1970s in infrastructure across the board especially highways. However the 1980s and 1990s was characterized by huge military and police expenditures as the country was at war with itself due to riots against apartheid and very little was invested in road infrastructure which has already started to show signs of taking strain.

In hindsight, the FIFA 2010 World Cup is a blessing in disguise for South Africa and this is why so many of us are pinning our hopes on it. It has spurred the ANC government which was resting on its laurels on transport infrastructure to swing into action and now we have over $15 billion worth of projects to upgrade public transport infrastructure. Everyone now believes that public transport will be the single biggest legacy of the FIFA 2010 World Cup in SA as it will enable the country to really make that jump into first world public transport infrastructure.

the colonial masters invested in roads in most of their colonies becoz they purely understood just how important the roads are to nation building, but the governments that took over just did not continue with the trend. kudos to anc who made sure that the infrastrucure did not get run down like in other countries like kenya ivory coast and many more. btw the world cup is one of the best things to happen to the you nation of RSA. even the developed world fights for it coz the economic effects are extreeemly far reaching

The $4 billion Gautrain Rapid Rail link was on the cards since 2001 and actually slated to be complete by 2006 and other projects were already on the cards or under construction. The ANC has done pretty well in extending roads to previously neglected areas in townships and rural areas. A good example is how they tarred all roads in Soweto a place with more than 1 million people and also managed to build new highways like N4 to Mozambique and N1N14 to Botswana and redid the N1 to Zimbabwe border post. In doing this, the cities took a bit of a back seat and this is why we are saying 2010 has brought back the focus to the big cities.

I think the FIFA 2010 has merely become a new catalyst and reason for ANC government to justify to a very difficult electorate with differing needs why it needs to spend all this big cash on these big projects (which are often seen as grandiose and extravagant) instead of spending it on social grants to make the poor happy. Balancing these needs has been the biggest political challenges in SA and the ANC has had to walk a very tight rope. For example Gautrain Rapid Rail link is seen by the poor black majority as a waste of money on providing the rich who are predominantly white with an expensive train.

kulani
July 17th, 2007, 07:15 PM
Think of it this way, its easier to tell the black electorate most of whom will probably not even afford to get on this $4 billion tube from airport to downtown Joburg and Pretoria that we are building this for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. No one will argue that you should be spending it on houses, water and electrifying the poor rural areas, because we all love football and want to put one hell of a show.

So that is why 2010 has become the reason d'etre for everything in SA. Half of those projects that are being done were all in the pipeline, but 2010 has made it easier for the cities to get the budgetary allocation to do this now and to even spend even more than would have been allocated to them before 2010. Obviously some are trying to squeez even more juice from the national government.

Kulani, who break your windowpane?

That's actually my friend's car, he told me he was driving in a farm up in Limpopo province visiting his farmer dad when a truck spun a small stone that hit his wind screen and inflicted what initially looked like just a small crack. A few weeks later the crack had expanded into this. I hope he has fixed it already, as his insurance company was still dragging their foot when i last spoke to him. LOL

2 years ago, the summer after graduating from Uni this South African friend of mine did a road trip passing by most of the South African coast. We started in Cape Town, went through Port Elizabeth, East London up onto Durban. From there we headed inland and pretty much went everywhere in the "Orange free state" as it used to be known. The infrastructure was top notch smooth paved roads. The world cup will be a blessing not only for stadium infrastructure but the roads and public transport system that goes with it. Had it not been for South Africa's hosting of the 2010 WC I doubt with this current ANC goverment much would have been done.

I think the ANC goverment has done a tremendous job considering they are now taking care of the needs of the whole population of SA unlike the aparteid/colonial goverment which only looked after the white population and had more resources to spend on roads etc.

Its a challenge having to balance the needs of what Mbeki calls the dual economies of SA, one highly developed and westernized and another largely plagued by poverty. Their needs are so vastly different. I know in Johannesburg where i live, they spent a lot of money paving roads in Soweto, Alexandra, Tembisa and other townships that were largely neglected. The results are easy to see when you drive into Soweto today.

This obviously means you often have to put some projects on the back seat and right now those of us priviliged to live in suburbs and cities have had to exercise some patience and deal with the traffic problems. I personally didn't mind because i understand how much the poor are sacrificing for this country while we eat in silver spoons and drive BMWs. Sure we pay most of the tax, but as we have all learned, if you don't sort out poverty, it will come to play itself out in a theater near you (aka crime). That said, i wouldn't describe the ANC's investment in roads as tremendous yet, but definitely a good job.

No doubt that South Africa's majority population is better off now than under apartheid, but lets not romanticize the party either. Their is very little genuine help to those who live in the townships. Black economic empowerment has made only a few very wealthy blacks, the middle class is still under presented. It is improving but with the corruption in this ANC goverment I doubt this rate of improvement will speed up. To me the opposition seems alot more competent but has an identity crisis. Being viewed as a predominantly "white" party. Peoples predjudices work both ways.

That doesn't change the fact that South Africa has easily the most dynamic, modern economy on the African continent. People like to point out that old cliche "oh its because of their white population" but thats a bs argument.

I think we all tend to not realise how much work they have done on roads because we didn't see a new highway get constructed behind our backyard. But here are some of the projects i know they carried out since coming to power.

- Upgrading the N1 from Pretoria all the way to Bait bridge, border post to Zimbabwe was completly redone, this is roughly 400 kilometers worth of upgrades on this highway. (I drive on this highway when i visit my folks up north and its such a pleasure to drive on it now) and they have cut traveling times too. Towards 1994 the highway especially from Potgietersrust to Louis Trichardt was a small two way road and i kept holding my seat whenever a truck comes on the other side, while my dad was driving his pickup van), because the road was so tiny and the edges were starting to come off.

- The N4 to Nelspruit and Mozambique which now serves as a gateway to Mozambique is a newly built highway
- the N1N14 which is the gateway to Botswana via Rustenburg from Pretoria, also a new highway
- the N17 through Rosetenville, don't know where it comes from. I know its supposed to go up to Ermelo, but got stuck on some EIA issues
- Rivonia road upgrades to dual carriageway from Rosebank all the way to Sandton during the WSSD conference in 2004
- N3 upgrades to make the whole highway dual carriageway

And these are just the highway projects i know of that are centered around Johannesburg. Sure they didn't build any significant highway inside Joburg, Cape Town, Pretoria or Durban but i think the extension and building of new highways and roads towards rural areas and border posts from the key economic centres is there for all to see, unless we conveniently choose to forget these.

We just need to sort out the freaking crime and get the whole Black Economic Empowerment and Affirmative Action programs working properly to accelerate investments, wealth generation and narrow income inequality. And if our president could fire some ministers for something called INCOMPETENCE. Top on my list of Ministers that should have long been showed the door are the ministers of Safety and Security, Health, Communications, Home Affairs and Housing

Yeah, right now the guys just need to start building infrastructure like crazy everywhere to bring Nigeria up to speed. Especially with the oil windfall coming from the rising oil prices. They really need to do what Angola is doing with its oil money. Less talk and more action is what is needed for Nigeria.

Kulani, please, donīt forget that Nigeria has built up a lot of infrastructure in the 70īs and early 80īs. Abuja has mostly been built from the mid 90īs onwards....and more new roads have been built since 1999. Nigeria has the best infrastructure (number of highways, flyovers, number of airports, kilometres of road network etc.) outside of South Africa in sub-saharan Africa. But I perfectly agree with you that more needs to be done. A cheque of $30 billion for more road and highway construction could help a lot!

Yes, you are right that Nigeria right now needs to be very ambitious to really close the gap. A $30 billion check would not hurt and would immediately signal that Yar'Ardua is serious about tackling this. South Africa is currently spending roughly $12 billion on rail transport, $10 billion on roads and $5 billion on airports and $20 billion on electricity.

I stand corrected but isn't the Nigerian government making $3 billion or more in oil exports per month? So money to finance this should not be a problem at all.

I am not sure Nigeria has the second best infrastructure in sub saharan Africa, I think that if you look at population and number of roads Namibia, Tanzania and even Kenya are on par or better than Nigeria. Kenyan Airports are some of the best in Africa and the rail network is also changing for the better. A Nigerian friend who visited Nairobi told me that he found Nairobi to be much better than Lagos because of better roads and a much better in city transport network.

Kenya and Tanzania have a Better Transportation Infrastructure than Nigeria, in the sense that roads in those two countries are better maintained.

However when looking at it from a "Infrastructure in place" point of view Nigeria has a better Transportation Infrastructure.

The Longest Bridge in Africa is in Nigeria.

If you go to Lagos, there are more Flyovers and Ring Roads than in Nairobi. At least from what I have seen of Nairobi. However when Nigerians say Nairobi is better than Lagos, it is all to do with Maintenance. I mean when all the Flyovers and Highways were completed in the 70s, they were World Class, on par with those of any other country in Africa. However Nigeria's Greatest Downfall Infrastructure wise is Maintenance.

A lot of the roads in Nigeria are in a deplorable state, however a lot of Transportation Infrastructure are still in Place. The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos is still "Africa's Bridge". The Murtala Mohammad International Airport is still a very important airport in Africa, and the roads in Abuja are one of the best maintained on the continent.

Looking at a none Biased point of view, Kenya has a better Transportation Infrastructure. Roads in Nairobi, are cleaner than those in Lagos, There are less Port Holes etc. However Nigeria has a less Uphill struggle in terms of putting the Infrastructure in place. Our problem is Maintenance.

Hahahahaha, it gave me a good laugh and nothing more.

Nigeria has the second best infrastructure in Africa beyond any doubt. Comparing Namibia to Nigeria is simply ridiculous, once you leave Swakopmund and Windhoek you have just one single road leading to nowhere, partly it is even sand and dirt road!

In Lagos and Abuja (give me any city outside of South Africa ) that has the same standard of infrastructure like Abuja. There is none. The next closest is still Abidjan.

The number of flyovers, the number of bridges, the number of airports (all that has be paid with petro-money and not with exporting bananas and peanuts) many towns in Nigeria have tarred roads even smaller ones, There are more than 2000 km of highways in naia. I donīt say our infratsructure is good - far from it - but it is there, we donīt have to start from scratch which is still the case for the majority of African countries.

As for your Nigerian friend, you should keep in mind that Naija people love to complain a lot and always say that things are greener on the other pasture...this doesnīt mean it it really this way.:)

Interview with Hon. Eng. Raila Amolo Odinga Minister for Roads and Public Works
Nairobi, Wednesday 8th, December 2004 - The new Government has been in power for over 2 years, and we have read in a survey that this Ministry is considered to be one of the most active Ministry, so can you tell us what have been the main challenges and achievements of this Ministry so far?

This is the Ministry for Roads and Public Works. Prior to the reshuffle, it included Housing, which has now gone over to the Ministry for Lands. We are now solely responsible for Roads and Public Works.

Roads as you know are like blood vessels in humans, to a country and its economy. As the blood vessels transport blood to the whole of the body, so do roads convey goods, services and people to all parts of the country. The importance of roads needs no emphasis. When this government took over, early last year, we inherited a very sorry state of affairs as far as roads are concerned.

We have a road network of about 150 000km, out of this 63 000km are classified roads, meaning they are categorised as Class A to E roads and others. The remainder are unclassified roads. Of the 63 000km of classified roads 9 000km are Bitumen, while others are either gravel or earth roads. At our independence in 1963, we had only 1 008 km of tarmac roads, since then we have increased that by over 7 000km

Well mathiass thi is what we have been able to do with our bananas and paenuts that you mentioned, well with your oil you should have the best raods on the entier continent. Note that this is before the new government had started the process of road reconstruction that is still goiong on

Matthias Offodile

Kenyan24, first of all I wasnīt refering to any country when I said "bananas and peanuts" and I certainly hadnīt got Kenya in mind. I know what Kenya has achieved, you just have to look at the pics of nairobi.

But let me tell you a few things: Nigeria had a handful of univesities at time of independece from Britain, today the number has increased to more than 40 universities (not to speak of the colleges), there virtually were not many paved roads at time of independence to speak of (that how the best of Lagos looked like during times of British rule in Nigeria: http://personal.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/D.Jefferies/amj/nigeria-1951/02-broad-street-lagos-1951.jpg), there were no bridges worthy of note, no airports or ports to speak of. When nigeria got independent it was not like former Rhodesia and far behind what Kenya was at independence and even Ghana. Nigeria was horribly under-developed and dirt-poor at time of independence.

Moreover, some people no nothing about Nigeria, in your eyes all are just crooks and muderes or go into prostitution business and Naija is a compelte mess!:bash: This is not true, Nigeria people are very well educated and not "stupid" and "savage" people what the Western media is constantly writing about! Nigeriaīs diaspora amounts to 16 million living abroad (more than some countries in Africa have inhabitants), many are very well educated and are "rediscovering" their country in forms of private investment and knowledge transfer more and more.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT NIGERIA WAS DENIED THE CHANCE OF DEVELOPMENT FOR 20 YEARS due to military rule, if the trend had continued in the 70s, nobody would talk about "poor" and helpless africa today.

kulani
August 5th, 2007, 07:41 PM
i have never personally been to Nigeria and Kenya but my personal view would be that Nigeria would have more roads, bridges, flyovers and more kilometers of paved roads than Kenya purely because of its sheer size in terms of population and land mass of its cities. Sure Kenya most likely has better maintained roads with few potholes etc because the level of neglect due to corrupt governments probably did not get worse than that in Nigeria. I understood that in the 1970s Nigerian was building infrastructure pretty fast and all this was cut short by the military regimes. Based on the pictures i have seen of Lagos, Abuja and Nairobi, i firmly believe Nigeria has MORE road infrastructure while Kenya probably has BETTER road infrastructure. Notice the difference between MORE and BETTER.

Kulani, then hopefully your business travels will take you to Nigeria in the future. urban Nigerian people are very dynamic, innovative, cosmopolitan, proud and educated people.
I sometimes wonder what Nigeria would have become if we only had 15-20 million mouths to feed (what is the case for the "average" African country)! Nigerians are simply bustling with energy and creativeness, some people overlook this crucila aspect!

Does "the best infrustructure" mean the most or best maintained. As an example, Brazil has more roads than Sweden but is it better. You have to look at population and maintenance since some cities and countries are larger but are they better.
I have always thought that Nigeria had the potential to be a first world economy due to it's sheer size and enomous oil reserves but the knife cuts both ways. Since Nigeria has such a large population it will be alot harder for the country to rebuild after what many say is over 20years of neglect.
Fly-overs and Brigdes do not determine how good a cities infrustructure is since a city located inland has no need for Bridges.

This magic road of Tanzania is like a gateway to heaven !

To be honest, the highways of South Africa are truly World-class and much better than in many Western European countries ( in my eyes ) :okay: The wide 6 and 8-lane highways seem brilliantly connected to one another with fantastic signages and flyovers.

Algerian and Moroccan highways are also of high quality and definitely deserve recognition.

I've also seen many pics of Ghanaian highways before ( not on this thread ) and many of them are world-class and impressive. Especially those highways connecting Accra and its nearby suburbs :okay:

We cannot judge the standard of development of a country by the quality of existing infracture -- instead, we must look at the level of improvement/ growth of infrastructure in that country. The' growth rate' is more important than the 'existing' . Kenya, Sudan, Nigeria, Namibia, and others are catching up rapidly in building world-class highways ( there are already many world-class highways in Abuja, Nairobi, and around Khartoum from what I've seen ) :okay: :okay:

I think vehicle traffic numbers have little effect on the road condition. The main problem IMO lies in the fact that most of Africa's roads are built to last 15-20 years and are hardly constantly maintained. Add shoddy workmanship (using poor materials to minimize costs) and the road quickly falls into tatters.

In developed countries, roads are built to last 40-50 years with superior materials. They also have more cars but their roads last.

Friednofthecity, Yes, if you want to call it like that, I am dwelling on memories (although I was not even alive or still a little boy when most of the projects were undertaken), one thing is for sure Nigeria didnīt have to hide itself anywhere at that time, it was already celebrated the "Brazil of Africa" and it was Africaīs sole superpower ahead of nations like Thailand and Indonesia, the early 80īs flung the country back horribly!

Damn, if the boom had continued Nigeria would have been on par with any of the South East Asian tigers nowadays, but signs of catching up are there again, so there is renewed hope!

Kboy, one is Eko Bridge

The other is the multi-lane expressway (ten lanes) between the Port of Apapa and Ikeja.

All those Bridges are still in Lagos. They are not in the best state, but they are still intact. Provided the Government can revamp them, and build more bridges/highways to compliment the existing ones, then Nigeria will be on the fast path again.

Lagos to Reconstruct Major Roads

08.20.2007

Lagos state government has finalised arrangement forthe reconstrution of 50 major roads spread across thethree senatorial districts in the state.
The road reconstruction exercise is in tandem with the continuation of the ten-point agenda of the State Government to raise human development index by pursuing plans, programmes and projects which have positive and direct impact on the lives of the people.
Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure to the state governor, Engr Ganiyu Johnson who made this known at the weekend in Ikeja said to this end the state Government has called for tenders for the construction/reconstruction/rehabilitation of the road projects.
He listed some of the road projects toinclude Ajangbadi-IIogbo-Elegba road in Ojo Local Government; Association Avenue (Governor’s Road), Idimu; Samuel Ekundayo Road, Badagry; Alexander Road, Oko-Oba, Agege; Dendeke Martins Street, Ilaje, Bariga; Ijede-Egbin Road and Fadungbade Close, Ikorodu; Satellite Town Road, Amuwo-Odofin; and network of road at Magodo Estate (Olumiywa Street, Kola AmoduCrescent, Duruji Way, Ogunnaike Close).
Others according to Johnson include Interstate Boundary Roads (Ayobo-Aiyetoro Road), Ayobo; Modupe Ayo-Ade Street off Abeokuta Oshodi Expressway, Araromi Bus/Stop; Shitta Street/Shitta Extension, Agege among others.

Roads in Irawo (Abeokuta Street, Ibadan Street, Ondo Street andOkunbadejo Street) Ajegunle; Lowa Street, Ikorodu;Agodo Community Roads in Egbe Idimu; Old Otta/IbariRoad, Alagbado; Olasimbo Street, Oregun, Ikeja;Beckley Estate/Grillo Road, Ifako Ijaiye,; Network ofroads in Local Government Housing Estate, Epe and BodeJoseph Street, Gbagada, Ifako. The Special Adviser added that tenders have also beeninvited for the construction/reconstruction and rehabilitation of Idowu Rufai Street, Okota; Odunmaku/Omole Street,Alimosho; and Afolabi Aina and Adegbeyemi Streets, beside Alade Market, Ikeja; and the Access Road toSheik Tijani Bakare and Winfunke Street off AbeokutaExpressway; Idako Lekki Road, off Lagos-EpeExpressway, Eti-Osa; Masebinu Street, Sabo-Ilaje inOjo Local Government area; and Humuani/Adetona Street,Agege among others. He noted that interested bidders mustdemonstrate the ability to undertake the projects withrelevant and verifiable projects embarked upon withinthe last 10 years and must be registered with theState Government Central Works Registration Board. To qualify to bid, Johnson explained that prospectivebidders must submit tenders in sealedenvelopes marked confidential with the correct titlesof the project clearly indicated and delivered at theSecretariat of the State Tenders Board atAlausa Secretariat adding that the State Governmentreserves the right to accept or reject late tenderjust as it is not obliged to consider favourably anyparticular tender. The Special Adviser also urged all PrivateTelecommunication Operators (PTOs) who might have anyprogramme on the said road projects to fast track andsubmit same to the Lagos State InfrastructureMaintenance Regulatory agency (LASMIRA) now as theState Government will not allow any form of roadcutting exercise on the said roads after constructionwork would have been concluded.

I think that Durban and Abuja have very good highways. Kenya has been trying to catch up but it will take as a while to even come close to SA which has and continues to invest in roads. Kenya was basically stagnant for 27 year or dictator Arap Moi's rule but major improvements have happened since President Kibaki was elected. I think that if we continue the trend, we should see a Kenya with worldclass roads in 10 years or less considering how well we have done in five years. I am not too worried about a change of goverment.

Abuja (Lagos to a certain degree if the roads are not congested) and SA certainly have smooth highways. I would also add Abidjan (despite the political and economic setback of the country in the past ten years, you can still see that the country once rocked economically)

Yes, it was!:)

Almost all of Ivory Coastīs modern infrastructure was built AFTER colonization. The 60īs and 70īs and 80īs transformed Abidjan from a small villlage to a beautiful and very well-planned and functioning modern metropolisis with only few pockets of urban poverty. The first president built a lot of social housing and always placed the emphasis on agriculture to fight rural poverty. Félix Houphouet-Boigny would cry if he saw his country today.

But, no politics here!!! Hopefully the country will come back to where it once was, it simply has to.

For that distance it should be around $ 5 one-way ?

It's because of two reasons:
-Those photos are meant to showcase the Highways and the surrounding environment. As such, they are taken at a time where there is the least amount of traffic.
-Most of the photos above are of highways that are located far from the main urban centres. The Highway between Casablanca and Rabat for example, is one of the most congested in Africa, that's why it is scheduled to be widened into a 3x2 highway by 2009/10

The price depends on the distance, but Casablanca-Rabat (which is a 70 km distance) costs about 3 Euros, which is reasonnable.

Good for Morocco. Know that nobody is trying to belittle Morocco here. If it's the most congested or one of the most congested in Africa, is that not a problem?

3 Euro for 70km journey is still on the high side.

It certainly is a problem, especially when trying to get into either city around 6.30 (Rush hour) that's why this expansion does not come a minute too soon.

My mistake by the way, I meant to write 2 euros, not 3!

i wish the kenyan govt could understand that simple fact. the investiment potential kenya holds is enormous but may never materialise. ok get this, kenya has not added an inch to the railway that was built by the british, thats how much stagnant the development of the kenyan infrastructure is. kenya is developing on many fronts and i am confident 10% economic growth by 2012 is going to be achieved but only if they(kenyan govt) fixes the transportation sector

Sorry to have to correct you there but I can see you're not from Rabat ;) none of those are proper-highways they are just normal city roads in Rabat. The first two I believe lead to the beach side. The last one being an avenue on the southern side of the city that has since (that photo is quite old actually) been filled with car show-rooms and some offices on one of its right side

I would like to know, is South Africa largely car-dependent ? Because I saw many 4 and 6-lanes and many cars sproting everywhere even in smaller towns outside Johannesburg and Cape Town. And I think train service in SA is limited with few loads, isn't it ?

Here's the long and short of it. Train service was largely developed to bring labourers from the poor townships and working class areas to come and work in the city, so most of the train lines only go to the poor townships like Soweto (Johannesburg), Khayelitsha (Cape Town), Umlazi (Durban) and working class areas like Kempton Park (Joburg). So if you are not staying in any of these places you are unlikely to be on the route of the train service.

Add to it all the problems with these trains like lack of safety, not punctual, vandalism etc, then your average middle class person has no choice but to use a car. And the highways were built to transport the middle and upper classes. So if you stay in the affluent areas of Sandton, Forwarys, Midrand, Sunninghill, Woodmead etc in Joburg you have to catch the nearest highway. To reverse this, the ANC govt is trying to build the $3.5 billion Gautrain rapid rail link. They face an uphill battle in convincing the well-off to get off their BMWs and catch a train.

Since those lanes are demarcated, what would happen if a bus broke down in one of the lanes?. Although it might be possible to exit the lane, this might result in a holdup if there is traffic.

I think, this is partly why the demarcation is made to be smaller to enable the bus to be towed out of the track if it breaks down (although i don't think this is going to be a big issue as the buses are going to be well maintained and is also a new fleet). i believe that the planners will make use of CCTV and the Johannesburg Metro Police will also be on standby to ensure that only buses use the dedicated bus lanes.

A point of interest here is that thanks to the economic collpase that the nation is now coming out of many major highways are only now being resurfaced/ rebuilt and were run down and in a state of poor repair. The recent economic growth thanks to growing copper prices is slowly pulling the nations roads out of it's self induced doldrums...Way to go Zambia - Get back on your feet!

actually....I am not sure about "your world" but here in the United States they have rural highways, they are called "routes" and sometimes just highways. but Im guessing Tunisia is a pretty small country and so not many rural parts. :)

anyway I went through this thread and saw many rural roads posted...at least 30 or so posts so I am sure 'abesha' is not the first to post such roads, I am also sure those wont be the last rural roads to be posted here.

Dont be so picky, I personally like seeing all roads lol

If you have ever seen people dirt biking in the desert or using 4-wheel drive vehicles, this is their dream land to do such things.
There are even competitions held all the time with tourists driving through such difficult terrain.

Oh good grief. No offense Sahara but if you'd look through previous postings in this thread I'm sure you'll find there are many other roads posted other than highways. Don't start bitching about it now, as everyone has been fine with it.

you must have misunderstood me, this is exactly what I was saying. I AGREE.
I want to see all the roads...reread my posts.

It is Tounsi who is badgering people about what kind of pictures they should post.
