CborG July 6th, 2007, 04:15 PM Isn't that little piece of A13 near hellange finished yet? I heard an angry farmer won't give up his piece of land:nuts: Now all traffic has to go via a roundabout to a temporary road around the farmer's land to reach the rest of the highway

And are there any plans to extend the A7 further north? Towards Belgium or Germany maybe?
ChrisZwolle July 6th, 2007, 04:15 PM A1 Luxembourg - Trier
This serie travels from the busy southern bypass of Luxembourg, via the airport towards Trier. This is one of the busiest Luxembourgian motorways. On the last rest area near the border at Wasserbillig, you have an excellent scenic view over the Moselvalley.

ChrisZwolle July 6th, 2007, 04:18 PM A4 Esch-sur-Alzette - Luxembourg
This short route is quite busy, it travels from the industrial area's in the southwest to the capital of this small country.

ChrisZwolle July 6th, 2007, 04:23 PM A13 Pétange - Perl
This Autoroute goes from the industrial cities around Esch-sur-Alzette via the Spa's of Mondorf-les-Bains to the Mosel Valley. We also pass by Schengen, known from the Schengen treaty. A small section east of Croix de Bettembourg isn't finished, because a farmer won't sell it's land.

ChrisZwolle July 6th, 2007, 04:26 PM A13 Perl - Esch-sur-Alzette
This road travels west from the Mosel Valley through 2 tunnels towards industrial centers of Esch. This A13 is recently constructed.

Verso July 7th, 2007, 11:33 PM The traffic on the A13 between A3 and Germany is very quiet. By so few settlements visible from it, you get impression as if no one lives there. I felt like in the middle of nowhere. :D
radi6404 July 8th, 2007, 12:02 AM Great motorways, the crashbarriers are my taste.
ChrisZwolle July 8th, 2007, 12:04 AM In my opinion, Luxembourg has one of the best motorways of Europe. The pavement is always smooth and new. However the signage is not the best. It's a mix of German, Belgian and French signage.
Verso July 8th, 2007, 12:04 AM ^^ I just wanted to say that traffic signs look incredibly old!

I was about to ask why the signate looks so German?
ChrisZwolle July 8th, 2007, 12:22 AM Road numbers, exit symbols: France
Font and arrows: Belgian
Colors: German
Verso July 8th, 2007, 12:39 AM ^^ No way, the font is French! You immediately recognize it from the funny "R".
Why is Saarbrücken sometimes written without Umlaut (dots above "u")?
ChrisZwolle July 8th, 2007, 12:45 AM French font is in Capital letters...
I don't know about the umlaut ü. They don't know it with Ettelbrü/uck either.

You should see the Struma motorway on Sundays or somewhen at night not on weekends, you see almost no car even on the two lamed national road but on the motorway you could travel as fast as you want.
Verso July 8th, 2007, 01:25 AM French font is in Capital letters...
Right! What's this font (and how do you know which font it is, anyway)? It looks very similar to the Swiss and Slovenian (ex-Yugoslav) fonts.
ChrisZwolle January 26th, 2008, 04:01 PM The Gousselerbierg tunnel in the A7 motorway has opened in Luxembourg. It is the longest road tunnel in Luxemburg at 2,7 kilometers.

x-type January 26th, 2008, 04:13 PM nice one! does somebody know about Luxembourg's plans about extending A7, is it going more to the north up to Weiswampach? are there some more plans for new motorways, perhaps A15 Ettelbruck - Bastogne (B)?
Verso January 26th, 2008, 05:10 PM Interesting. Are there any plans for a ringroad around Luxembourg (completing the northern part)? It would also shorten the route between Belgium and Germany.
Billpa January 26th, 2008, 05:13 PM In my opinion, Luxembourg has one of the best motorways of Europe. The pavement is always smooth and new. However the signage is not the best. It's a mix of German, Belgian and French signage.
Are the signs lit from within? They look a bit "thick" in some of your pictures.
ChrisZwolle January 26th, 2008, 05:22 PM I'm not sure, Belgians usually waste their energy resources by light them from the inside.
The Dutch signes used to be lit from the inside, but they are rarities from the past now, because reflection signs don't need energy.
Billpa January 26th, 2008, 05:34 PM I'm not sure, Belgians usually waste their energy resources by light them from the inside.
The Dutch signes used to be lit from the inside, but they are rarities from the past now, because reflection signs don't need energy.
Well, isn't Belgium the most "lit" country in the world? Because of the motorway lighting...
Verso January 26th, 2008, 05:39 PM ^ Not (just) b/c of motorways, and that's lit per capita. Just like Slovenia is the 2nd most lit country in Europe, but per capita. The Netherlands for example is much more lit, b/c it has 4 times the population density as Slovenia.
Billpa January 26th, 2008, 05:52 PM I could say Amsterdam has a reputation for being "lit", but that's a cheap joke, so I won't. :)
ChrisZwolle January 26th, 2008, 05:57 PM Well, Belgian motorways used to be fully lit, however some newer motorways don't have lights, and the other ones usually dim the lights, except near exits.
There are a lot of greenhouses in the Netherlands, so they are usually very well lit.
Patrick January 26th, 2008, 07:36 PM Are the signs lit from within? They look a bit "thick" in some of your pictures.
yes, the older signs are lit from within. i don't know if they shut it dowen during the night sometimes, at least at 2 AM they are still lit (that was the latest time I drove somewhere there). the newer signs on the ringroad around Luxembourg are reflective and the lamps are in front of the sign (so, still lit, but on a different way ).
dia June 11th, 2008, 12:01 PM Here is a site where you can see all the motorways in Luxembourg from the webcams. The update is slow but it's still interesting :).
http://www.cita.lu/
Kevlargeist June 12th, 2008, 12:17 PM Are the signs only in French everywhere in Luxembourg?
Verso June 12th, 2008, 01:26 PM ^ In some areas it's a weird combination of French, German and Luxembourgish. Sth like writing "Grand Herzogtum Lëtzebuerg".
convalescence June 12th, 2008, 04:16 PM does anyone know where pictures of the works at A7 can be found?
and are there any plans to expand the A7 in direction to Belgium/St.Vith?
I sometimes drive the E421 from St.Vith to Weiswampach (in the north of Luxembourg) and this street is a very narrow one with a lot of traffic...
dia June 13th, 2008, 10:53 AM I will make a bit of search for pictures but it's not the most filmed motorway in the world  And even less the works on it. The plans are clear, when they reunite the existing portions, they will probably expand the motorway towards Clervaux.
Btw, here is a nice picture of A7 existing part/junction, passing above the A1 ;)

Yes, it's almost perfect if you forget the North of the country which is a true highway desert. I guess in 20 years :ohno:, they can go to somewhere (Clerveaux) with A7.
The Knowledgeable August 27th, 2009, 06:07 PM Extending the A7 all the way to Belgium would be cool. That and completing the Luxembourg ringroad.

brisavoine August 28th, 2009, 08:09 PM Wasserbillig = cheapwater?
No.
Wasser- = water
-billig: comes from Latin "Biliacum" which was the name of that town during the Roman Empire.
Wasserbillig:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3e/Moselle_%C3%A0_Wasserbillig.jpg
The ending "-acum" is Gaulish and means "place of". The pronunciation of this ending evolved over time throughout the territory of the ancient Gaul, and is nowadays pronounced differently depending on French (and Wallonian/Luxembourgian/Swiss) regions. In the Paris area, "Biliacum" would have become "Billy", in southwest France "Biliacum" would have become "Billiac", in the lower Loire Valley it would have becomme "Billé", in Auvergne it would have become "Billat", in Romance-speaking northeastern France it would have become "Billey", in the region of Lyon it would have become "Billeux", in Alsace it would have become "Billach", etc.
This is how the ending "-acum" is now pronounced depending on regions. You can see that the "-ig" ending happens in the Germanic-speaking part of Lorraine (and hence also in Luxembourg).

Mateusz August 29th, 2009, 01:04 AM Interesting motorways in Luxembourg, any plans of extending A7 ?
ChrisZwolle August 29th, 2009, 10:18 AM As far as I know, there are plans/construction to complete the A7 near Luxembourg City, but there are no direct plans to complete A7 all the way to the Belgian E42.
I also don't think a full ringroad of Luxembourg City is necessary. It's not a world city we're talking about, but a city with a population of only 90,000.
DSzumaher August 29th, 2009, 10:43 AM Plans are here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A7_motorway_(Luxembourg)) or here (http://motorways-exitlists.com/europe/l/a7.htm).
Luxembourg City has a population only 90,000, but another 100,000 commute daily to work from Trier, Thionville, Arlon and other cities of the duchy.
ChrisZwolle August 29th, 2009, 10:47 AM Yeah, so most of them commute by existing motorways. I believe the Luxembourg area has one of the largest international commutes in the world.
ChrisZwolle January 7th, 2010, 07:52 PM http://www.wort.lu/wort/web/letzebuerg/artikel/66372/zahl-der-verkehrstoten-wieder-steigend.php
Traffic fatalities rose from 35 in 2008 to 49 in 2009. Quite a bad score.
That is 99 fatalities per 1 million inhabitants
Germany had 49 fatalities per 1 million inhabitants, Spain about 43, the Netherlands 45. Belgium about 100.
convalescence January 7th, 2010, 09:48 PM probably subjective but first thing what i think about streets and motorways in luxembourg:
there are too many snobs with their large cars on their road who lead to unsecure road conditions with their behaviour - they think they are the kings of the road and can do everything... in those peoples minds there is no speed limit at all -.-
also at roads in the german Eifel region you often have a big snobby car with yellow license plate so large in your rear-mirror provoking you!
ChrisZwolle April 27th, 2010, 11:22 PM Long time no posts in this topic. Now having clinched 97% of the Luxembourg motorways, I think I can say Luxembourg has the best of Europe. Every motorway is very smooth and so are the non-motorway roads.
I made a video of the A7 motorway in central Luxembourg.

Victorinus April 28th, 2010, 12:48 PM ^^ Nice viedeo.
I love to drive there every time I went to Lux. especially the roads where you can drive 110 km.
Uppsala April 28th, 2010, 01:10 PM The economy in Luxembourg is very good. And the country is very small. So it’s quite easy to have good standard at the roads there. But I like the roads in Luxembourg too. They are very nice.
ChrisZwolle May 2nd, 2010, 04:42 PM A7 Luxembourg - Diekirch
Some pictures of the A7 motorway and B7 expressway in Luxemburg.
First, the A7 is not completed yet, there is a short stub near A1 (basically an interchange with an exit 1 km further), and a longer section from Lorentzweiler to Ettelbrück. From there, the B7 2+1 expressway continues North to past Diekirch. It is the most important N-S route north of Luxembourg City, but traffic volumes are low.
route: (plus small stub near A1)

Stub near A1: Once you've traveled the interchange, you can see the end of the motorway! It's that short, less than 1 km.

Wover May 2nd, 2010, 05:56 PM The B7 Expressway. It's a limited-access, 2+1 road.

One of my favourite near-by roads ;).
There are some downsides too though:
- The 110 speedlimit is only when there are 2 lanes for your direction, but that usually switches every 2kms, and then it's back to 90. So it's only useful for overtaking.
- Further North, the road passes through some village built-up areas, restricting the maximum speed to 50.
But overall I really like driving in Luxembourg. Traffic is usually low, roads have high speed limits and are of very good quality and signage is always correct (but not perfect, the layout changes a lot, there's no continuity).
speew August 15th, 2010, 05:34 PM I wish we had roads like these back in Romania...
Suburbanist November 26th, 2010, 01:56 AM I took a day trip to Luxembourg and, with them, some pictures. I entered the country from Arlon, Belgium, then taking A6 to Luxembourg center, where I walked, had lunch and looked after some stuff to buy.
Pavement in Luxembourg is perfect

Suburbanist November 26th, 2010, 02:07 AM After 2 hours, I returned to my car and started a drive around. First, I crisscrossed some streets in a Z pattern that took me down the the small valley that lays down under the giants gorges that separated the 2 main populated areas of Luxembourg city. From there, you can spot the huge viaducts that links them, some old, some new, all very impressive to look at.

On the last exit before entering Germany, we took the N10 road, which is an amazing ride! Many cars fill up in Luxembourg, as fuel there is substantially less expansive than in neighboring countries. We took the exist and start descending. Meanwhile, we passed under two of those viaducts shown above:

Suburbanist November 26th, 2010, 02:23 AM Michelin Maps classify some roads as "scenic", meaning the surrounding views, settings and/or landscape are particularly interesting. This time, they'v got all right with this designation for N10.
This route closely follows the course of the Sűer/Sauer river, which is an affluent of the Mossel and delimits the German-Luxembourgian border. I bet this road is even nice on spring, full of flowers, or on early autumn.

question: are there any plans for continuing A7 further to the north part of country?
ChrisZwolle November 27th, 2010, 01:07 PM question: are there any plans for continuing A7 further to the north part of country?
Only by road enthusiasts :D
Traffic volumes north of Diekirch are very low, I doubt if they exceed 4.000 vehicles per day between towns. Ideally, it would connect with E42 motorway in Belgium, but there simply isn't enough traffic to warrant a motorway. Most traffic on N62 in Belgium is just driving to Luxembourg gas stations to fill up on gas and tobacco. E42 in Belgium is also extremely quiet, only 5.000 vehicles cross the German border, which does not exceed 15.000 vehicles until you reach Malmedy. Verviers is busier with 50.000 vehicles per day.
However, on the Aachen - Metz route, it would save some 55 kilometers (20%) compared to other all-motorway routes. If you use non-motorways around Ličge or Bitburg, it would save less, only some 25 kilometers.
DSzumaher November 27th, 2010, 02:13 PM It seems to me that more could use northern part of Luxembourg Ring (I don't know about specific plans.) than A7. In the city would be no transit traffic, but also A1 + A6 would be relieved. A few vehicles driving from N1, N7 or N11 towards Belgium (Arlon) and back. Now they must choose: the city (traffic jams and pollution), or A1 + A6 (longer and faster route, but higher traffic volume approaching to undriveable (not yet now, but more closer)).
PS I know that A6 will be widened to 6 lanes (Strassen - Croix de Gasperich), but I don't know when.
czerwony_bo_szybszy November 27th, 2010, 07:36 PM IMHO any new section of A7, except for Waldhaff-Leurenzweiler of course, is out of sense, as there is hardly any transit traffic and northern part of the country isn`t so densly populated (no cities over 10.000 inh.);
moreover, I think they should rather focus on traffic situation in Luxembourg-Ville itself, as there exist quite a problem of jams, while working in Lulu there were appearing all over the downtown except European Quartier (Kirchberg)
dia November 28th, 2010, 01:02 AM Btw, for those who are interested, the section between Dudelange and Esch/Alzette (A13) has now been resurfaced where the road was in pretty bad condition. Also the Howald tunnel was refurbished during couple of months and should be open on Monday. More details here:
http://tunnel.cita.lu/fr/chantier
kalibob32 November 28th, 2010, 09:01 AM Isn't that little piece of A13 near hellange finished yet? I heard an angry farmer won't give up his piece of land:nuts: Now all traffic has to go via a roundabout to a temporary road around the farmer's land to reach the rest of the highway
http://maps.google.nl/?ie=UTF8&ll=49.502305,6.133718&spn=0.025808,0.086517&t=k&z=14&om=1
And are there any plans to extend the A7 further north? Towards Belgium or Germany maybe?
this is from the first page but can someone give me any more information about that farmer
dia November 28th, 2010, 08:58 PM this is from the first page but can someone give me any more information about that farmer
What do you want to know? I don't know his id but the situation is still the same here. There were rumors a solution have been found but nothing is actually happening. The roundabout is in terrible condition btw.

stefan740 September 5th, 2011, 11:30 PM Does anyone know the date the A7 (Waldhof-Lorentzweiler) is supposed to be finished? The goverment should have a completiondate somewhere right...?
ChrisZwolle September 6th, 2011, 09:47 AM I believe the date was somewhere in 2012.
However, this map says 2011:

Otherwise, I can't find any dates on Administration Ponts et Chaussées (http://www.pch.public.lu/).

PS Oh! I see that you "forgot" about two stretches, so I have the opportunity to show.

Nice done!

tomhart November 30th, 2012, 03:56 PM http://www.wort.lu/wort/web/letzebuerg/artikel/66372/zahl-der-verkehrstoten-wieder-steigend.php
I am a Brit living in Luxembourg, and I can confirm the standard of driving in Luxembourg is absolutely appalling. As it is such a rich country, many people have large cars which are always the ones tailgating. Also, some motorway interchanges have a bit of a dangerous design, in that you have to merge very quickly to the left lane while simultaneously, cars coming from the motorway in the left lane have to merge quickly into your lane, over a stretch of about 250 m until the road splits.
That being said, I agree with others that the standard of the roads is absolutely amazing. Always smooth and new, and many of the roadworks are done on Saturday evenings and Sundays and then the road is open again for the week.
The quality of the roads is very noticeable when driving to the nearest IKEA store, which is in Belgium. As soon as you cross the border you realise how wonderful the Luxembourgish road surfaces are and how dreadful the Belgian ones are.
