About Arusha
Arusha is the capital of the Arusha Region, located in the north of Tanzania. It has a population of 270,485 (2002 census). This city is located on a plateau in the Great Rift Valley amidst the Serengeti Plain, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, and Mount Kilimanjaro National Park.
Geography and climate
Arusha is located by the foot of Mount Meru.
Yearly, the temperature ranges from 13 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius, and the seasons between wet and dry seasons. Due to Arusha's altitude, dry air is prevalent.
Arusha experiences an eastern prevailing wind from the Indian ocean, a couple of hundred miles east.
Modern history
Official documents ceding independence to Tanzania were signed by the United Kingdom at Arusha in 1961.
The Arusha Declarations for Self Reliance in Tanzania were signed in 1967 in Arusha.
The Arusha Accords were signed at Arusha on August 4, 1993, by representatives of competing factions in the Rwandan civil war.
In 1994 the UN security council decided by its Resolution 955 of 8 November 1994 that Arusha should host the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. The establishment of the tribunal with its employees has influenced the local economy of Arusha. The tribunal is expected to end its normal work in 2008 with two more subsequent years for appeals handling.
Arusha officially became a city on 1st July 2006

Kenguy July 8th, 2007, 10:20 AM Arusha is East Africa's version of Abuja. (Its the proposed capital city of the East African Federation and a good number of building projects are taking place to ensure that it handles its future role in the region.)
The best thing about the city is its location. Its in the most economically productive region of Tanzania. Its also only 3 to 4 hours away from Nairobi (the main economic hub of the region) and on top of that, it has some of the highest elevations (Mt Meru and Kilimanjaro-though its a bit farther away) and very beautiful landscapes. It is the mini switzerland of East Africa IMO. This obviously means alot of tourist potential and Arusha is clearly capitalizing on this.:)

Matthias Offodile July 8th, 2007, 11:22 PM The setting is absolutely awesome and the city looks nice to me but someone said it is like Abuja, no way! Both cities are incomparable! It had cost BILLIONS of US Dollars to build Abuja and it will continue to swallow up more $ billions in the coming years! Arusha is certainly not like Abuja!

^^
I meant Arusha and Abuja are similar on the basis that they are (or will be in the case of Arusha) new capitals built to serve an administrative purpose in a certain region. Though you obviously can't compare the two in terms of financial investments and the fact that Abuja was created from scratch.

You are right Geza Ulole. Arusha is developing through private sector being a tourist hub. Just last week a 4 star 154 bedroom opened. the famous mount meru hotel. Kempinski is on its way in 2 years time will open its own 77 hotel. Plans are also underway to build Movenpick hotel on the outskirts of Arusha. NSSF are currently constructing 15 storey and PPf are planning to put a similar structure near Kibo hotel. The New East African Community HQ is also underconstruction.
rockycity December 29th, 2010, 06:24 PM Great to hear such developments in our cities, Is there any plan to rehabilitate arusha roads? am sure arusha will completely change and look more beutiful if the roads will get built. Tanzan can u post the pics of those buildings how they gonna look when finished?

Arusha needs wide roads. I don't know of any plans to rehabilitate roads there.
At the moment I have not seen the pics of the buildings...but will definately share when i get them.

You cant compare Arusha to Abuja.......Abuja is in a class of its own
tanzan March 2nd, 2011, 02:08 PM You cant compare Arusha to Abuja.......Abuja is in a class of its own
First, Abuja is a Capital City and Arusha has yet to get a City status...therefore it is still a municipal.
If only Dodoma was developed it would resemble Abuja because Dodoma has similar environments as Abuja.
Arusha is a tourist/conference/EAC/gemstones hub...much of investments are private. only recently Govt org.such NSSF and PPF are starting to construct 15 storey towers and malls but still Arusha cannot be compared to Abuja and should not, both are in a different category.

Arusha is a city since September 2010 with a city municipal get your facts right overthere! BTW though Abuja is planned, i looked at its clips and did not see much skyscrapers as you are trying to mean here! Abuja has a population of 776,298 (2006) of which i believe Arusha is currently accomodating! With all the shortcomings I still believe Arusha has World class hotels and facilities more than Abuja! No offense

Just 3 days ago there were tenders advertised and it mentioned that Arusha Municipal...I am aware that its long overdue for them to have a city status.can you bring a gazetted copy that Arusha has now got city status?

Again Abuja is a capital city and Arusha isn't!
Arusha is supposed to have even more world class hotels such as hilton, radisson, hyatt, marriott etc.coz of its tourism potential.
I understand Kempinski & Movenpick will build soon.

i think your problem is the word "municipal" of which arusha has a city municipal council pls get a meaning of the word municipal! a city can be under a municipality too...! Actually it was declared a city in July 2010 (http://allafrica.com/stories/201008021315.html)! btw is Abuja having those hotels ( hilton, radisson, hyatt, marriott)? au unabisha tu kwa kasumba? tumia internet kuangalia..Abuja has only Hilton hotel among those you mentioned! When people talk of touristic facilities they mean number of quality beds available (international accepted), of which Abuja hasn't!

TZBoy April 28th, 2011, 12:45 PM who was Colonel Middleton
not quite sure. I tried looking him up but i got nothing. he is probably an English Army Colonel who fought in WW1 or he was in charge of Arusha during the colonial times.

Angalia youtube website wameonyesha jiji la Abuja ila infrastructure-wise nawapongeza! Arusha hata Dar wanahitaji kuwekeza kwenye barabara sasa kama Nairobi inavyofanya sasa!

This is so beautifull juz the like the US. Driveway with open front pouch or yard is something nice. Security must be excellent in Arusha. I wish we could have such settings in Nairobi, where we waste alot of money building brick fences for security. I wonder what the pricess of such condominiums are selling for in $. Tanzania is paradise I wonna live here peacefull and quiet, besides Tanzanians are the most adorable people in Africa.

Tanga has even bigger potential.

Fwesa January 7th, 2012, 09:41 PM Thanks. I love Arusha.
kiligoland January 11th, 2012, 11:02 AM Arusha council set to modernise 3 markets
Arusha city council will soon start restructuring three major markets into storey buildings as part of a major facelift of the the northern safari capital.
Markets which are lined up for the refurbishment include Arusha central market, Kilombero market, which is popular for selling affordable food items, and Kwamurombo weekly market.
Arusha city mayor Gaudence Lyimo revealed this here recently, stating that the current situation of the markets in the busy city was disgusting and could not attract foreigners as customers.
According to him, most markets in the city were an eyesore as they were in a chaotic situation, thus keeping away potential shoppers.
“To start with, we have appointed different committees to spearhead the process,” Lyimo said.
Lyimo, whose election is at the centre of the one-year Arusha mayoral dispute, stated that among key issues in the improvement of the markets included the construction of storey buildings.
“Our idea is to make the city maintain its status as the country’s tourist capital,” he stressed, without disclosing the actual amount that will be spent in fulfilling the long-awaited dreams.
Among other plans include coming up with with market bazaars of international standards as well as shopping malls with all sorts of goods available, be it clothes, food, drinks, entertainment and recreation facilities included.
The giant supermarkets will be located within Kaloleni area, which is in central Arusha.
“Our target is to make Arusha one of the modern cities in East Africa and right now we’re eyeing for well-experienced contractors from Dubai and other parts of the world,” he said.
The official further called on city dwellers to support the initiatives in different ways, so that the intended missions be realized.
However, Arusha Urban MP, Godbless Lema called on people living in the Kaloleni area not to accept the relocation plan as part of paving the way for the project, claiming that the project was another grand corruption.
“I have got doubts. Even before the tendering process, someone has started naming Dubai-based construction firms,” the controversial MP told a public rally.
Like all other urban centres in Tanzania, Arusha city faces socio-economic problems arising from rapid growth of urban population attributed by natural growth & rural-urban migration.
The high population influx to Arusha is mainly due to the booming tourism business because the city is the main gate way to major tourist centres and due to the city being the main market for minerals from Mererani mines. The current population projection is estimated at 507,903 people, however, over 100,000 people come into city during the day and leave in the evening.
