Here are some Cincy skyline shots from Kentucky. It was a pretty hazy day so some of the photos may seem washed out.

I think Cincinnati is one of my favorite skylines to look at. It's so diverse and having your tallest still being a building from the 30's is cool.

Is Downtown Cincinnati as vibrant as the skyline would suggest? I've heard some people say that DTC is still a bit lagging. It looks great though.

Downtown isn't as vibrant as the beautiful architecture might suggest, but it is developing as has many amenities downtown that other cities covet (Contemporary arts museum, Saks Fifth Avenue, performing arts center, Fortune 500 headquarters). It's definately alive during the day, but I got the impression it really wasn't a hangout or draw for a lot people in the city after 6pm.

DT Cincy has a very established feel in the sense that the density and urban fabric is there and excellent, but some parts feel a bit drab, and things are pretty dead at night. Things just don't feel as vibrant as the dense skyline suggests. But I will say that things are moving in a positive direction and my several visits recently are showing good things. But does anyone know if they are ever going to have a nice park that will run along the river? I think I saw some fancy plans and renderings a while back, but haven't heard anything since. I really think a very urban riverfront park is something Cincy's DT really needs.

BTW, I went to the Freedom Center recently, and its an excellent museum both in content, and in design. The building materials are really great. A major plus for the DT area.

The pictures are a little washed out but it's nothing Photoshop can't fix.

...But I will say that things are moving in a positive direction and my several visits recently are showing good things. ...

Yes, things are definitely changing, and quick!

Here are some comments from different people about DT Cincy:

There are numerous new nightclubs, restaurants, and bars that have just opened, or are under construction that are causing things to progressively change, kind of like a domino effect and when we get our streetcar system back up and running, it'll be that much better!

I was DT this past Friday and Saturday night and it was slammed! People were everywhere on 6th St, 7th St, 4th St, and the newly renovated square!

Downtown has managed to turn the corner relatively quickly. People who once used to think of downtown as a tired/boring place are now frequenting the new restaurants, clubs, bars and events. New residents are everywhere and visitors are welcomed by something new almost every other week. It's just past the half way point in 2007 and Downtown Cincinnati has seen the opening of 4 new bars/clubs, 3 restaurants and more events on Fountain Square than you can count.

It's wonderful to see everything coming together and this is just the beginning. The majority of the tenants in the redone 5/3 building have yet to open, another few restaurants will be opening shortly, and another couple bars/clubs are on the way. This is all before the ball drops for 2008. If you want to think about 3-4 years down the road, then you'll really be blown away with what Downtown Cincinnati will be like.

3-4 years puts the streetcar in place and the first phase of The Banks. The Banks will most likely attract tenants like ESPN Zone, Hard Rock Cafe, House of Blues, countless restaurants, bars/clubs. Combine that with the activity that the streetcar system will be shuffling around and you have yourself a VERY strong/vibrant urban core. Thousands of new residents and tons of new attractions. The streetcar system will most likely help give the retail scene downtown a kick in the pants...if that doesn't do it, the thousands of new residents should.

As an enthusiastic patron of downtown I can't help but notice how much good press the move back downtown is creating by these establishments this past year and most notably the last few months. We can only hope that the residential side is received as well when it comes along and the current rentals/condos, etc. are not forgotten along the way. I feel there is a very positive tone being set that is key for future investment by business and citezens. Now if we could get BG to take down the link that so contrastingly states 'riots not included' at the top of this very encouraging blogspace, it's starting to kill my buzz from all of this energy for downtown.

Ahh so you must of past by me. I was on the square with my family with our camping chairs watching Ralph Macchio kick some Cobra Kai butt. It was our second time at Movie on the Square night. Goodtimes...

Here is the schedule for up and coming Movie on the Square nights:

July 14: “Ice Age” and “Jurassic Park”

July 21: “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”

July 28: “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Planes Trains and Automobiles”

August 4: “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Star Wars”

August 11: “Shrek” and “The Princess Bride”

August 18: “Men in Black” and “Remember the Titans”

August 25: “Nacho Libre” and “Dodgeball”

September 1: “Finding Nemo” and “Jaws”

Suddenly, DT is the place to be again!

... as the way it should be!

Well it looks like DT Cincinnati has a lot to work with. I remember reading a story on here about how DT Cincinnati had just passed the milestone of 3,000 people Downtown. That really surprised me because DT Omaha where I live has 8,000. I expected the bigger metro to have a more proportionate DT population. Is the actual definition of DTC a pretty small area though?

Yeah, the 3,000 figure is an old data figure. Also, keep in mind the DT definition is considering DT to be about 1 sq. mi. :|

That's why I was wondering if DTC was actually a small part of a bigger "Downtown" area.

What's the really odd looking building in the photos(Covington)? The white one? That's quite a look!

That's the Ascent Condos. The price range, I believe is from half a mill up to $3 mill for the penthouse.

It was designed by Daniel Libeskind. Some people love it, some hate it ... personally, I really like this building.

I'm a 24 year old in Cincinnati and the nightlife downtown is definitely better than it has ever been since I turned 21. When I turned 21 there didn't seem to be much going on. Now at Fountain Square, and the other mentioned bars on 4th, 6th, and 7th, seem to be packed almost every time I go downtown.

Cincinnatus, what is the proposed route for the streetcar?

Thanks for the info. I kind of like it. But it looks somewhat out of place there. It looks like it would be in a more progressive Euro city.

UrbanOhio.com is probably the best forum out there for Ohio related discussions.

Here is a link to the thread about Cincinnati and it's Streetcar proposal ... all 37 pages, lol

Of course you'll want to go to the end to find the most current newspaper articles, etc.

John Schnider is the main dude, so what he says -is probably the most accurate truth, just a heads up.

So if downtown is getting better but isn't the hotspot for nightlife, where is the hotspot? I've been to Cincy several times, but never to go out to the clubs, except Bogarts for shows, I love Bogarts.

Bogarts is great! I can't wait for the TV on the Radio show!

Anyway, hotspots:

I mainly hang out downtown, but you should check out: Mt. Adams, Mt. Lookout, Oakley Square, Clifton, Northside, & Hyde Park Square.

If you want specific clubs, let me know what you are in to and I can tell you where you'll want to go!

No, I don't need specifics, I really don't go to clubs. Mostly dive bars and music venues. Holy shit, TVOTR, you my friend, are in for a treat! Probably, maybe even the best... Yeah I'm saying it, the best live band this year! Have fun!

Yeah, I keep hearing that from people! I saw them on the David Letterman Show and even then, they kicked ass.

I'm pumped up, if you're in Indy, then you should come out ... they're playing on Aug. 2.

BTW, if you like dive bars, next time you are in Cincy you should check out all of Northside! Specificially; Northside Tavern, Alchemize, The Comet, and The Gypsy Hut ... you'll love it! I took a friend from Memphis to Alchemize and Northside Tavern and he was blown away by the common weekend bands that play -and you cannot beat the atmosphere of NST.
