View Full Version : 8 weeks at #1 for "Umbrella" by Rihanna feat. Jay-Z. Who likes it?

Butterfield

Songs that spend more than a month at number 1 are usually a bit more special than the usual ones. This could be said for "Umbrella" as it features the line "'Ella, ella...", only this song has now spent two months atop the official UK Singles Chart.

POLL: So, do you like this choon? Have you bought it/downloaded it? I think it's okay, not great or rubbish, just okay. :)

I heard it for the first time the other day, i rarely hear whats going on in the charts these days and have to admit im a little out of touch. I have to say though that if this pile of crap has anything to do with current music i can happily say i am missing out on absolutely nothing.

I don't understand why its #1 for so long, it doesn't even have a bandwagon like Gnarls Barkley did last year. Its a completely average song for Rihanna, what gives?

The fact is she released it at the perfect time, Jay-Z has a part on it and its a club song. 3 things needed to get to number 1 in the UK not to mention the fact the British like to make a statement. Americans are following us too. Seems its on the top over there aswell now for te 2nd week.

Obviously Im fed up of it now, but not to the point where it gets on my nerves. What annoys me most about it is thick radio DJs like edith bowman after the song taking digs at it. The rain is clearly a metaphor for hard times, other people must be able to see that? Surely?

Deffinitely preferable to the 100,000 band wagon indie bands out now. Better than "omg this song makes me cry" slow formulated snow patrol wank.

I've never heard it. That's why I'm angry with the Beeb for scrapping Top Of The Pops. As I can't stand listening to Radio 1, it was the only way I had of keeping up with what the "young people" were listening to.

I've got to take my hat off to her clearly vast lyrical ability, she manages to get 5 syllables out of the word 'Umbrella' ('Um-ber-er-ell-a') and they say there's no talent in the charts these days :ohno:

I wouldn't usually give this kind of pop music - certainly RnB - the light of day but the songs I find myself singing in my head never lie. Um-ber-ella-ella-ella-eh is sickeningly catchy in my head anyway.

And I agree with twiz, a nice pop song now and again can be refreshing after the same indie song played over and over again by different bands with slightly different lyrics.

Oh and don't try to make sense of Edith Bowman - shes a cunt.

:D True, but of all the indie bands around at the moment Snow Patrol are probably one of the better ones. When I first heard umbrella I liked it for a few days because it's catchy but now it's just been overplayed to the extreme. I'm suprised Timbaland's new song hasn't knocked her off yet..

Snow Patrol get on my tats to be honest, they could talk about eating beans for dinner, but because they sing it all slow and soggy all the muppet fans would still sit and cry to it.

Im not saying i like any of these new wave indie "the" bands, but what is currently referred to as "R'n'B" drives me insane. R 'n B stands for rhythm and blues, think early Eric Clapton, it is not this contrived shite with the same bloody rhythm in every single song and no sense of blues at all. What happened to good old fashioned cheesy pop, i miss the S club 7s and B*Witched, at least they dont pretend to be anything other than cheesy happy pop.

Keri Hilson, who's also American. But the video was shot in Salford, Manchester.

They may have quite depressing music but I do like some of their songs, they're catchy and have a good rhythm (and that's from someone who doesn't like indy music generally - although I do like Editors - Smoke outside the hospital doors, at the moment)

"These days".

People say that, but when was chart music last good? The 70s? I hear some of the 80s "hits" now and they're awful, same goes for the 90s. I dont know about the 60s and 70s. People will always hate the music of their era, "not like it used to be", people need to embrace the present maaan. ;)

As my dad fondly points out - a lot of music during the 60's and 70's was astoundingly bad. I think peoples main gripe these days is the lack of passion, soul or emotion in a lot of music, and the way in which some acts behave as if they're the best thing ever because their pathetic rock pap appeals to hoards of mindless teenage girls. I'm talking to you McFly.

I can proudly say I have never heard it. I don't 'do' commercial radio.

Our singles charts are usually the most abysmal collection of US R&B / Hip-hop singles, because the only people who still buy singles are chavettes with their pocket money.

The album charts (where the real money is actually made) have a lot more British acts / quality. The singles chart is a farce, basically.

not as true anymore because as I understand it a download of an album counts as 10 entries into the singles chart.

I don't like Rihanna's songs at all. They lyrics are cheesy and totally amateur. I just couldn't take that Unfaithful song seriously at all. I just got images of council estate dwelling chavettes singing along to it as if she was the spokesperson for their generation. This song is just a waste of time and money. The subject of the song is ridiculous and mind-numbing. We've had enough rain recently in this country as it is to be constantly reminded by her that umbrellas are making a comeback in the UK this year.

Jay-Z is obviously in some sort of situation if he feels he has to return after retirement and even perform on such a track. Maybe it's his presence that has propelled this to such an undeserved chart position? The girls love her singing, and the lads lav y'ung Ho've because his propa gangsta' (and Rihanna's well fit). Saying that, even my brother who is setting new low standards for gangstarism in the UK finds this song an earbleeding compilation of vocabulary. And I now feel the urge to form a rant consisting of so many different words that I really would not use in my day-to-day life that I feel I need to cut it short before making a mockery of myself for just not using the words correctly or in the perfect ways in which Martin G did of yesteryear.

So, despite saying all that about the unoriginal drivel that she is pouring past her tonsils, I have to say she does have vocal potential and some good looking physical assets ;). How old is she?

I am actually yet to hear the song throughout. I've managed to listen to the Cheeky Song, the Fast Food Song, Gareth Gate's version of Unchained Melody and even an NSYNC album all the way through but I am yet to listen to Umbrella throughout. Alot of my opinion in that post was based upon my thoughts on her other songs.

Just listen to "Pon De Replay" and you can see that her lyrics are of the same standard you'd read in the Daily Mirror. She's maintained that throughout her career...:bash:

Indie people are much more likely to purchase albums than singles, hence the popularity of indie albums.

As to what the next music craze will be, maybe Europop will make a comeback? I always found that music quite good to dance to and didn't require much thought in regards to lyrics or emotional content :dunno:

I doubt that. There's shitloads of theories to why he created that album. Some say it was an attack at his rivals, an attack at Southern rap or just an attack at mainstream hip hop as it is. But don't expect that album alone to stop hip hop.

I would take that thing from The Sun with a pinch of salt, as it is The Sun... ;)

bloody hell of course it is a good pop song, you bunch of old farts. You dont have to like it to be able to see that. To my is it is the same vein as Britney Spears 'Hit me Baby one more time' and 'Crazy'. Incredibly endearing, a touch of innocence/lack of cynicism but with a punch and an emotional tang that makes you want to hear the chorus again and again. If you really cant stand pop that much then you shouldnt even be bothering to comment on the song. I heard a remix version in a throbbing outdoor party in Soho during the pride weekend and everyone was riding along with the tune in the rain... now that is pop!

Having said that 70% of the music in the charts has always been crap, the only reason people think it was better in the past is that TV and radio only use the good tunes from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s and not the dross.
