What's your favorite bridge? Tell us where it is and post a picture if possible.

My favourite bridge is Tower Bridge, London. It may be small in comparison with modern bridges, but it's a classic design:)

i love the beauty of bridges, but there are two that rise slightly above the rest. The Mackinac Bridge in Michigan is a sentimental favorite and The Firth of Forth Bridge in Britain is just the most wonderfully amazing structure i have seen, i would absolutely love to see it in person someday.

The Mackinac Bridge:
Total Length of Bridge - 26,372 Ft. (~5 miles)
Length of Suspension Bridge - 8,614 Ft.
Length of Main Span - 3,800 Ft.

this bridge connects the lower and upper peninsulas of michigan. it stretches roughly 5 miles across the straights of mackinac where the waters of lake michigan and lake huron meet. this bridge is my sentimental favorite because my famile vacations every summer up in mackinac and this was the first long span bridge i ever saw. the beauty and length of this bridge have always awed me. and the fact that it is on the great lakes is another reason i love it; the great lakes are my absolute most favorite bodies of water on earth and this mighty bridge stands tall as the longest span in the great lakes region.

http://www.mackinacbridge.org/images/original/Image007.jpg

http://www.mackinacbridge.org/images/original/091246Tlb0070-98.jpg

The Firth of Forth Bridge:
length - 8,276 feet

this bridge just looks cool. i have never seen any bridge anywhere else that appears to use as much steel as this bridge does. it looks as if it's possibly the most overbuilt structure anywhere. it looks so strong and massive, qualities i greatly admire. a very unique and beautiful bridge design, definitely one of a kind.

Maybe I'm being a little biased here, as it is fairly local, but I'd say the Humber Bridge.

Reasons? Not so much the impressive size of the thing (it was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world until fairly recently), but the fact that its appearance coupled with its setting make it incredibly bleak. It spans a very wide strectch of water called the Humber Estuary, close to the grey North Sea. It looks best on a cold grey day (most days then), especially from the north bank with the Blade-Runner-esque refineries glowing on the distant southern bank.

@ 2100 GMT on BBC2 (I doubt many outside of the UK will get this) is a drama-documentary on the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. Its the 2nd in a series of great wonders of the industrial age (the 1st was Isambad Kingdom Brunels massive Great Eastern - which was literally a scraper is height and a size of a town in length). If you cant watch it in ure country, get on a flight, book a hotel somewhere in London with a room with a TV and watch it :D

Details bout the program :P (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo/listings/programme.shtml?day=thursday&service_id=4224&filename=20030911/20030911_2100_4224_10275_50)

Yep - the American millionaire had read a book about London Bridge centuries ago (it had living stuctures on it - ie houses, it was its own little village, built on top of a small bridge and rising up in the sky. I remember reading some historical document on the bridge and there could have been as many as 200 people living on it - not to mention many business'. He unfortunately did not carry on and if he had learnt the old bridge passed into history and a victorian (still good quality) bridge was erected. He brought this, not really thinking of actually visiting or looking the issue up any further. London made a hansome profit and a new larger bridge was built. When the bridge arrived in he designated peices - he couldn't quite see how it was all going to work out of how he read about it. When it was finally constructed - he supposedly had a heart attack and died a year or two later. I think its a centre peice of some sort of resort?

For modern pedestrian only bridges the Millenium Bridge in Newcastle deserves credit as does the Millenium Bridge in London which links directly St Pauls to Tate Modern :)

I also like the MacArthur Causeway, one of many causeways (bridges) that cross Biscayne Bay connecting Miami mainland with Miami Beach. This causeway in particular connects the Downtown Miami area to the urban oasis of SoBe (South Beach). Those extraordinary houses are on the lucrative islands that populate the bay, and the buidlings in the distance are the hotel and condo highrises on northern Miami Beach. This bridge is gridlocked every weekend night with expensive cars, music blasting, hot people. Distinctly Miami.

My favourite bridge is the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne Australia;
it's a 2,500 metre "s" bend

But why is it so high?

Because ocean-going shipping has to go under it to reach the port of Melbourne.

Unless I missed something, no-one from Sydney has nominated the Harbour Bridge, so I'll put my vote in. If the Forth Bridge looks heavy, this bridge has to match it: designed for four roadlanes and four rail-tracks, but two of the railtracks ended up carrying cars instead.

I'd support that nomination - it is a wonderful bridge. Not that anyone on this thread REALLY needs reminding of the stats of SHB, I would remind Yardmaster that the original design was 6 vehicle lanes and 4 tracks (2 for trains, 2 for trams), and two wide footpaths. The trams have since been removed and replaced with vehicle lanes 7 & 8 on the eastern side of the bridge. Lane 8 is interesting in that it goes through the two pylons on the eastern side, similarly the northbound railway line goes through the western pylons.

Hey, since I am from Bosnia I would have to say that my favorite bridge is in Mostar. In Mostar it is called Stari Most! It was built by the Turks in the 16 century. This was greatly appreciated because it replace Mostar's old wooden bridge! Then the bridge was destroyed by the Croatians. Now, the bridge is open and looks just like it new. Below, I have provided a picture!
Thanks,
-Timur Taljanovic

My favorite bridge has got to be the bridge to Rouge City on the movie A.I. Even though it's not real, I think those bridges are amazing. Imagine driving through a woman's mouth. I highly doubt such bridges would ever get built, but I can dream.

i'm a big fan of the akashi-kaikyo pearl suspension bridge, its the suspension record holder at the moment (span 1998 metres) and survived a richer 8 earthquake whilst being built. not bad.

otherwise i love the rainbow bridge in tokyo, the erasmus bridge in rotterdam, tower bridge, brooklyn bridge, the golden gate bridge and forth bridge (havent seen it but i'm sure its awesome), , the pont in florence and the rialto bridge. i do love the one in england at stowe gardens as well. the one bridging anglesey in wales to the mainland (menai bridge) is also lovely, it is also the world's first suspension bridge. the bridge in bristol is awesome, as is the millenium bridge in london. the pont du gard in france is also amazing, as is millau.

my favourite? oh its the biggest! the akashi kaikyo! but when millau is finished i will probably prefer that. stunning.

Golden gate, of course!!!
Why? It's only the 2nd best bridge in SF. The Bay bridge has a much more dramatic setting with SF as it's backgroung. If you've never been to SF, fly into Oakland and rent a car. Cross the Bay Bridge to get an unforgettable entrance to SF ( the city explodes in front of you after you pass through an island in the middle of the bay).

May favorite bridge is the Schlossbrücke (Palacebridge) in Berlin.

http://img1.uploadimages.net/163336Schlossbrücke.jpg

http://img1.uploadimages.net/863875Schlossbrücke_2.jpg

It is not too big or technically unique, but therefore, it is quite impressive from a artistical and imaginative point of view. It was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, probably THE Prussian architect.

The 8 Sculptures are telling a Heroe's life, from his first lessons in swordplay as a young guy by the goddess Minerva, until his graceful death and ascension to Olymp with the goddess Iris (or Nike) ...

My favourite bridge has to be the Forth Rail Bridge in Scotland. This bad boy is massive, totally over-engineered, but stunning. You've got to remember that this thing was built 150 odd years ago. Its also complemented perfectly by the Forth Road Bridge.

The Tyne Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Bridge were infact started at the same time in 1925. The Tyne Bridge was finished first because it is on a smaller scale however to see it in person you would know that it is no cheap rip off.

Most of the river Tyne's Bridges were opened by Royalty and at the time of completion were great World engineering triumphs.

All though not the best bridges in the world in terms of size I think Newcastle can claim to have the best collection of Bridges anywhere in the world within a 2 mile stretch with 7 in total.

This picture shows 6 of the seven bridges clearly with the swing bridge hidden between the Tyne Bridge (green one) and the High level bridge (big black one)

Here are the names dates and who they were opened by from top to bottom of the photo.

Millenium Bridge (2001 by Queen Elizabeth II )
Tyne Bridge (1928 by King George V )
Swing bridge (1876 - no official ceremony)
High Level bridge (1849 by Queen Victoria)
Queen Elizabeth II Bridge (1981 by Queen Elizabeth II.)
King Edward VII Bridge (1906 by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra)
The Redheugh Bridge (1983 by Diana, The Princess of Wales)

Here are each of the bridges in more detail.

Millenium Bridge:

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a 600 tonne structure, will slowly open turning on a pivot like a giant eyelid to form an arch to allow ships to pass below it. Significant dates: Bridge manouvred into position by the giant crane Asian Hercules .

The Swing bridge:

The Swing Bridge was built on the site of the Roman and Medieval bridges which crossed the Tyne at this point. During its construction, two Roman altars were dredged from the river. Dedicated to Neptune and Oceanus, they probably belonged to a shrine built to protect the Roman bridge from the Tyne's tides. The largest opening bridge of its kind when it was opened in 1876, its hydraulic opening action was originally driven by steam pumps but these were replaced with electric pumps in 1959. The bridge was needed because the small arches of the old stone bridge prevented large, sea-going vessels access to Lord Armstrong's expanding Elswick Works.

Many of the most picturesque highway bridges in the United States utilize an open spandrel concrete arch design. This was a popular form of bridge construction during the first half of the last century. Two of the most famous bridges of this type are the Bixby Creek Bridge in the Big Sur area of California and the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena, California:

Bixby Creek Bridge

Colorado Street Bridge

http://webpages.charter.net/g.vassilakos/oscb/colorado6.JPG

This form of construction was also used for many more modest highway bridges built before World War II, such as on Route 330 in City Creek Canyon in the San Bernardino Mountains:

Bloor Street Viaduct (officially called the "Prince Edward Viaduct")
Built in 1918, designer Edmund Burke insisted on having a lower deck for a future subway line (built 48 years later, saving the TTC millions...)
Even though the bridge is onlty 490 metres long and 40 metres high, it still is my favorite because it has a major roadway on top, a subway line on the lower deck , and it passes over a road, a highway, ariver, a bike path, a major rail line, an electrical transmission line...... as well as the one of largest innercity park systems in canada

My Thuan Bridge-Vietnam

The My Thuan Bridge, located in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam, was completed in May 2000. Built with Australian assistance, the My Thuan Bridge represents an architectural expression of the friendship and co-operation between the peoples and governments of Vietnam and Australia.
Studies indicate that the bridge will be a major catalyst for an improvement in living conditions for Vietnamese people living in the delta region and also throughout the country.
The 4,500 kilometre long Mekong River is the tenth longest river in the world, flowing through China, Burma, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia from its source region in Tibet to its mouth in Vietnam where it flows into the South China Sea (see figure 2). There are main two branches of the Mekong River in Vietnam, the Tien Giang and the Hau Giang.
The Tien Giang is the main branch of the Mekong River as it flows through Vietnam and it is an international shipping channel used by vessels moving to and from Cambodia.
Australian companies, with support from Vietnamese enterprises, prepared the feasibility study for the project, undertook detailed engineering design for the bridge, acted as lead contractors for construction, and supervised construction performance. Vietnamese companies undertook 45 percent of the construction of the bridge through subcontracts.
National Highway 1, south of Ho Chi Minh City, is the principal road link to the Mekong Delta, with roads diverging to the south, southeast and west of the Mekong Delta from the southern banks of the Tien Giang. The My Thuan Bridge is thus a critical link in the road network in southern Vietnam. :)

Went over the Bosporus bridge a few times and it was very impressive. Nice detail: these are the only bridges in the world that connect 2 continents!

My personal favorite is still the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, nicknamed The Swan. Quite modest in size when compared to other bridges, but the design is unique:

i have a couple favourites. but my all time favourite is the alex fraser bridge in delta bc. it's just cool
http://www.eng.ucalgary.ca/CSCE-Students/images/Structures/bridge-AlexFraser.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/big_bridges1/fraser2.jpg
http://www.somerseteng.com/newly%20scanned3/homepic.jpg

Alex Fraser (Annacis) Bridge high level, Main Channel, Fraser River 1986- When opened, the 465-metre main span was the longest in the world. The stay cables radiate from two tall concrete towers, founded on large steel pipe piles of similar length. The deck is concrete, laid on steel plate girders. Originally the six-lane deck was restricted to four lanes, the outer lanes being reserved for cyclists and pedestrians. In about a year the bridge had generated sufficient traffic to justify opening all six lanes to vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists were moved outside the cables.

North of Annacis Island, the highway is taken over Annacis Channel by a low-level bridge equipped with a swing span for navigation.

also the skybridge in new westminster and surrey british columbia. it's really cool too. it's just for skytrain.
BC Transit SkyBridge Fraser River, New Westminster 1990- The SkyBridge, just downstream of Pattullo Bridge, enables commuters from Surrey to avoid the Alex Fraser, Pattullo and Port Mann bridges. It is set skew to the Fraser River to ease the curve coming from New Westminster. It is almost on the line of the original ferry which served the start of the Old Yale Road up the Fraser Valley.

The bridge is cable stayed, like the Alex Fraser, but with the entire deck built of concrete. There are two tracks, enabling SkyTrains to pass on the bridge. With the completion of SkyBridge, the oldest and newest bridges in Greater Vancouver are within sight of each other.

1st... New Bay Bridge, Eastern Span, in California.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/LardySlovenian/EastSpan.jpg

two interesting things about this bridge: first of all, its actually two seperate bridges, unlike the current Bay Bridge, which is one bridge with two decks:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/LardySlovenian/EastSpanb.jpg

and second, it is called a "self-anchored suspension bridge," because the main cables acually wrap all the way around both bridges:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/LardySlovenian/self-anchored.jpg

the new Eastern Span of the Bay Bridge is currently under construction :colgate:

Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tower Bridge. Have seen them both in person and would often sit by them in wonder. BTW, I think the Milau Viaduct is amazing for it's height and location, but it's not very attractive and I'd hate to live in the valley below.

This is probably a little biased, but I like the Confederation Bridge, which crosses the Abegweit passage in the Northumberland Strait between New Brunswick and P.E.I.:

I sort of miss the ferries though, despite the inconvenience of waiting for hours for them to arrive. :D

Here are a couple more bridges also in the Maritimes, starting with the Angus L. Macdonald bridge between Halifax and Dartmouth:

I'll add my vote for the Millau Viaduct;
I've seen the Golden Gate and the Bay Bridges, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Forth Bridges but none of them approach the Millau Viaduct for elegance, size and the sheer thrill of driving over it.
An even bigger thrill would be to walk across it and have more time to absorb how high above the valley you are and to also feel how "lively" the steel deck must be!

Today's (13 dec 06) picture header reminds me that another special Bridge is the footbridge behind Schloss Neuswanstein - an old iron and wood span over a rocky gorge with a fantastic view of the original fantasyland castle.

These are magnificent bridges, which I greatly admire. However the bridge closest to my heart- and that was the subject of this thread- is this :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Otway/bnw/sbr86_bt.jpg

for the simple reason that my father and I built it, with a bit of help, to cross a creek which at times floods 50 metres wide. On the farther side: just one house.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Otway/bnw/sbr_rs1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Otway/bnw/sbr_py2.jpg

Some statistics:

Built: 1986-87
.
Type: suspension bridge, with cable-stayed features as well.

Main span: about 16m.

Secondary spans: steel truss.

Deck: treated pine.

Height above creek bed: about 3.5 m.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Otway/bnw/spsbr8734.jpg

Total length: about 25m.

I did think of doing it in stone -a Moshtar bridge would have been very nice- but there wasn't time.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Otway/bnw/ls_br.jpg

I do love the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It looks so oversized and disproportionate for the city. One of my fondest memories of Sydney is driving in from the north for the first time and seeing this gigantic structure looming up in front of the city.

I'll choose the Conde McCullough Bridge across Coos Bay in Oregon, named for its engineer, because it memorializes the builder of so many fine bridges in Oregon and illustrates how he brought artistry to bridges of any type, even the often ugly steel cantilever truss.

http://www.coos-bay.net/Looking%20from%20Northwest.jpg

My second choice, for reasons of nostalgia, is the Youngs Bay Drawbridge in Astoria, Oregon, also by McCullough. This is a bridge from my childhood which we crossed on the way to town. It was exciting to hear the siren announcing an opening to allow a fishing boat through. If we were lucky we would stop close enough to watch it operate. Then when we drove through, the alternating pattern of the railings would make an interesting sound effect as we drove past.

http://en.structurae.de/files/photos/2415/pic27572.jpg

Of the bridges I haven't seen in person, the one that interests me the most is the Eads Bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis.

I forgot about the rainbow bridge. Not the best looking bridge, but that setting is spectacular. I'll always love the Jacques Cartier bridge the best though. Heavy, metal, and it always fills me with either giddy anticipation at the fun that awaits me at the other end, or deep reflection regarding the memories I've just made.

My all-time favorite bridge is the old Rochester-Monaca Bridge, crossing the Ohio River connecting those two Pennsylvania towns, torn down in 1985, and it only lasted fifty-two years. It was a truly magnificent and majestic bridge, and I miss it dearly. My current favorite bridge is the eighty-five-year-old Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge further up the Ohio River. There is a great abundance of bridges here in Western Pennsylvania.
