Let's rate the famous Four Seasons Hotel...

The Stats

Height: 682 ft/ 208 m
Floors: 52
Year: 1993
Architects: Frank Williams & Associates, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners

The Facts

This building has landmark status.

Tallest hotel in New York City.

The Four Seasons Hotel was designed to possess a classic elegance that transcends both time and fashion. The 54-story tower occupies a through-block site in an exclusive part of midtown, and responds to local zoning codes with setbacks up to its cruciform crown. Clad in fine French Magny limestone, the tower becomes one with New York, which remains a masonry city despite its many glass skyscrapers. At night, the hotel has a unique skyline presence, as finely wrought lanterns at each setback add a festive note distinct from midtown office buildings.

The design evokes the grand tradition of a former time when going to a hotel was a memorable occasion. Emphasis is not on workaday efficiency — checking in and out quickly — but on celebrating the luxury hotel experience with apartment-sized guestrooms and public interiors designed around personal service and discreet ceremony.

Surrounding the grand foyer is a terraced salon-like environment that invites New Yorkers and international travelers alike to socialize over tea, drinks or light dining. Conveying an air of both grandeur and intimacy, it provides a public place to see and be seen in, a gracious stage for urban theater.

This building is trying way to hard to look like an older building an fails, IMO. The colors are drab, and the details are few and far between. I give it a 5 simply due to height.

I like how the top part thrusts skywards and its almost graceful, but let down by the huge expanses of concrete.

Why does this have landmark status? I thought you said 30 years was the minimum needed?

I don't know, I'll find out. Perhaps, the site on which they built it on was already a landmark?

Here's the rule according to the NYC Landmarks Commission:

What types of properties can be designated?

The Landmarks Law requires that, to be designated, a potential landmark must be at least 30 years old and must possess "a special character or special historical or aesthetic interest or value as part of the development, heritage, or cultural characteristics of the city, state, or nation".

That's from their site at:

Haha. Well, the intention was commendable but the result doesn't nearly look like believable Art Deco. This being said, with New York's density I suppose it's not going to be so easy to "appreciate" the top and it looks okay from street level. The lobby is pretty convincing too. Still, it's a bit half-baked.
