Hey guys,

Loving the new google my maps feature and decided to create one of my own. The subject of my map is demolished buildings, structures and neighborhoods throughout Tampa and Hillsborough Co. I created the map because I used to see pictures of some demolished buildings throughout Tampa, like the Tampa Terrace Hotel, and always wondered exactly where they are. I mostly used the burgert bros. photos you will see and sanborn maps to figure out placements, you can access them through the public library website. It is still a work in progress, but I appreciate any feedback and suggestions. MY MAP (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=114075604277756759978.000434f08ac19f90df977&ll=27.95036,-82.458728&spn=0.002123,0.005021&t=h&z=18&om=1)

My favorite buildings : Old Hills. Co Jail, Knights of Pythias Hall, Desoto Hotel, Tampa Terrace Hotel, and Tampa Heights Hospital before it became St. Joseph's Hospital.
Interesting thing I learned when creating this map, I didn't know that the current Gold Bank building on Tampa and Twiggs was actually built in 1925, the remodeling really changed the facade (you can see how it looked in the picture I use for the old Tampa Morning Tribune building that was on the same block)

Enjoy!

Nice job. Kind of depressing to see all of those great high and mid rises that were knocked down though. :(

Wow I wondered what happend to most of our Art Deco buildings!
I can't believe they are almost all gone, that sucks.
Should have preserved history better, oh well.

Very cool undertaking. I had quite a bit of fun playing around with the map and learning where some of the buildings were that even I was unfamiliar with.

Thanks everyone. I am still finding records of buildings that I never knew existed. I think it is most interesting to see the impact that urban renewal had on our community. It is also interesting to look back and to see the building cycles in Tampa. TampaMobster21 you are right alot of the buildings were in disrepair or very hard to maintain when they were razed.

I would love a project that would show what the old buildings would have looked in our skyline. If someone has the resources could you do it?

I recently made several new updates to map, and I am still fixing alot of the broken image links (Tampa library has shifted the Burgert URL several times this year).

New finds:
Franklin Square building
Washington Street Viaduct -- This one is crazy!!!
Sanatorio Del Centro Espanol

I am finding that I am having a lot of trouble with my placemarkers recently. Many have seemed to duplicate over to the next placemarker down on the list, deleting my old info. Anyone else with a google map having a similar problem?

I'm finally getting around to saving all the Library's Burgert Bros. Photos that I use in my map over to my photobucket page. This will hopefully help eliminate broken links in the future as the library is constantly moving things around in this collection. My next task will be to arrange the buldings in a more cohesive manner, they are currently placed in line as I add them in.

Buildings recently added: Val Antuono Cigar Factory on N. Ashley torn down to make way for the interstate.-, 3 old schools, Bayshore Apts (torn down this winter), and Tampa Gas Co. Building (looks like it was one of the prettiest art deco buildings in this town, or is that art noveau I'm always getting those 2 mixed up. Anyway it packed alot of glamourous details into its small 3 story body!)

Thanks for looking!
