View Full Version : Australian Snow

There was a thread in here last year about snow in Australia, couldn't find it. Last year was a poor year for snow here, this year has been a different story all together. Best start to the season in 17 years & we've had snow to very low levels in the southern parts of the country today, it looks set to continue for a few days yet.

Anyways, here are some pics from Blue Cow in New South Wales:

We don't really have really tall mountains here in Oz, but we do have some unique alpine scenery. It's absolutely beautiful country in the Aussie Alps. The gum trees have stunted growth from the winter snow, they're called snow gums. (Funny that!) :)

Even tropical Queensland has had cool weather this winter, some of the cities in North Qld (One of the hottest parts of Australia) have had days with maximums around the 10c mark.

I can't wait, i'm going skiing in just over 2 weeks, reports are looking great for some nice powder as well. :D

I saw some pics of BA in snow on another thread, and the city looked even greater in white! BA is at sea level right? Which makes snow in the city even more exciting. Snow at sea level in Australia never happens on the mainland, but our most southerly state, Tasmania, can get sleet near sea level:)

Oh and Wezza, top pics!!!

BA is the same latitude as Melbourne, if you compare the weather it's pretty balanced most of the year.

We have had snow at sea level on the mainland Q-TIP, last year it happened actually, it is very rare though. Did you know that the Sydney CBD has even seen snow? It was back in the late 1800's though. It apparently won't happen now because of the heat generated from the built up areas.

Yeap, we (in BA) thought the same...until it happened. Even I was skeptical the same day. I heard some meteorologyst saying "the models from thursday and friday gave as snow on monday in the city. We thought that was impossible, so we didn't announce it". It was great that felt on a National Holiday (independence day), as everyone was in their houses or going out to enjoy it.

And It's at sea level.
I was wandering what was the weather like "on the other side"

Q-TIP

Snow would ruin the beautiful scenery. Snow is the reason we don't have eucalyptus trees or palms where I live. Rather, we have conifers.

snow is like a plus of winter, it enhances a city´s scenery

the Sydney´s CBD resembles alot to manhattan, and it would be cool to see it covered by snow. but of course, hardly impossible

^^ Well, maybe a couple of days with snow couldn't bring any harm, but if it becomes a climate pattern, the trees would never survive, unless they are extremely hardy, which is extremely unlikely. Live through atleast one Canadian winter, and you'll be sick of snow. If you're into skiing and hockey, well, that's a different story.

No, it's thanks to climate change. ;) The world is warming up and cooling down. While Australia turns into Northern Ontario, Europe is turning into Arizona. :)

Europe's steep increase offsets Australia's slight decrease.

Funny how people's perspectives can differ. After seeing photos of people playing golf in the middle of a Canadian winter I thought: if this happened all the time Canadians would dominate summer sports as well.

Katoomba in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney gets the occassional winter snowfall and can be reached by CityRail interurban trains in about 2 hours from Central, which depart every hour off-peak (I think), with a single adult fare costing $11.60. Of course you have to be lucky and be there when it's snowing or has recently snowed, so it helps to listen to the weather forecast. Snow usually seems to fall overnight with the passage of a cold front, but mostly melts by the middle of the following day, so you need to be there in the morning to see it.

For the timetable click here and scroll down to the Blue Mountains line: http://www.cityrail.info/timetable/index.jsp
For fares from Central to Katoomba click here: http://www.cityrail.info/fares/calculator.jsp?from=17&to=268

Yes, The "Alpine" area of Australia which covers New South Wales, Victoria and part of the ACT is bigger than Switzerland.

I was surprised by this. I have been to the Australian Ski-Fields three times and always thought it was quite small. Just proves how big Australia actually is.

It's been one of the coldest winters in a long time. Even tropical North Queensland had it's coldest June ever this year, in Townsville there was a week where the temps struggled to get above 13 degrees, which is quite odd for a city that far north. The ski season had it's best start in over 17 years also. It needed it after last years disaster.

Winter has arrived early in southern oz over the past few days, some of the ski resorts have had up to 30cm of snow. Snow season opening weekend is usually the first weekend in June. Here's hoping for a excellent season, i'm hoping to get a few turns in at some stage.

Australia (the parts that snows) is actually as close to the South Pole as cities like Washington DC are to the North Pole (that get snow).

People are really suprised by snow in Australia, but when you take it out of context it's not that suprising.

Austrailia gets snow only around the edge of the island right, because the middle part is desert. Or does it snow in desert as well?

annman
July 28th, 2008, 03:40 PM
What island... Australia is considered a continent!!! JK... yanking your chain a bit. We have the same issue in South Africa, people falling over backwards upon hearing it snows down here! Australia like us, generally gets snow in highland areas (but they get more). Thus there, most snow falls in the Great Dividing Range in New South Wales and Victoria or in mountains of Tasmania (very seldom TAS gets snow close to sea-level). Sometimes, Western Australia gets snow on the Stirling ranges in the south west. Else, most of the continent is too far north in latitude to get snow.

Basic rule of thumb... in the southern hemisphere, highland areas can get regular snow south of 30ºS; snow prolonged in highlands around 40ºS, occasional near sea-level snow; near 50ºS snow at sea-level common.

Thus NSW/VIC snow is common in highlands, occasional further north in NSW
Thus TAS snow is common, occasionally approaching sea-level in big storms.
WA gets very little snow, due to highlands being almost absent and southern mountains barely exceeding 1000m in height.

August was a pretty poor month snowfall wise, September was much better but by that stage, most resorts had started putting staff off as the season close was nearing. Then there was a big dump last weekend, some resorts in Victoria got nearly a metre & then this dump in NSW over the last day or 2. Looks like more is forecast too, probably not as much this time though.

^^ The higher parts of the central tablelands west of Sydney usually get a couple of snowfalls a year. The Snowy Mountains & Victorian Alps between Sydney and Melbourne get regular snow every year unless there is a mild winter and most of Australia's ski resorts are located here. The mountains of Tasmania also get snow and due to being further south it can sometimes fall down to quite low levels and even down to sea level around Hobart (the state capital) on fairly rare occasions.
