San Diego. July 19, 2007.

The Top Fashion Cities of 2007 have been named by the Global Language Monitor in its annual global survey. Breaking into the Top 25 were Berlin (No. 11), Shanghai (No, 14), Moscow (No. 16) and Dubai (No. 24). Other notable rankings included Shanghai at No. 14, Sydney and Melbourne at Nos. 12 and 15 respectively, and the Fashion Quartet of South America: Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Palo, and Buenos Aires. I don't know if Japan is a top haven for fashion or not......but those Japanese girls spend tons of $$$ on buying Louis Vuitton, Channel, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo and all those fashion items for the rich and famous.

I think for Louis Vuitton, Japanese people are their number one client and the biggest driver to their sales compared to any other country (even more than their home country in France).

In short, these Japanese women spend more money on fashion (maybe even more than buying food :P)

Tokyo deserves to be higher in that list. The biggest mistake that list made is Rome. Why the hell is it the top 2?! Paris deserves to be number one. Milan should be ranked second. Tokyo and New York should be tied at third place.

Tokyoites are extremely fashion savvy. No where is this more implicately shown than at Cosplay Bridge in Harajuku. Harajuku fashion rocks the shit out of everything that New York can muster. Tokyo's urban and underground fashion is edgier and more original than any other city/metro out there.

The list should be like this:
1. Paris -- the real heart of classy fashion
2. Milan -- the heart of chic fashion
(tie) 3. Tokyo -- the hub of urban/underground/cyberpunk fashion
(tie) 3. New York -- America's fashion capital
5. London -- Creative Culture Hub

^ I agree. When it comes to art and fashion, Japanese are just one of those top. Every time I saw Tokyo new boutiques I just keep downloading the photos. No where in the world close to the city of Tokyo! Chanel with large screen LCD, Hermes, Prada, Dior, Apple, Louis Vitton, Mikimoto, Gucci, Tod's, Tokyo International Forum, even Harajuku Protestan Church, these are all strikingly modern and unique, imo!

Yup.

There are dozens of Louis Vuitton mega-boutiques in Greater Tokyo. Their website claims that there are 25 outlets in the Greater Tokyo Area (Chiba, Tokyo, and Yokohama). New York only has only five.

I mean, where else can you see so many luxury mega-boutiques at such a high concentration? The Japanese are simply fashion sensitive to the point of being already obssessive.

Definately not New York deserves first place, what happens in new york basically influences the entire worlds fasion. For ex 'hip hop' started in NY and now you see tons of japanese dressing 'hip hop'.

I think Paris should be #2 and Tokyo #3. I dont know why the list puts tokyo so low.. Tokyo is definately not #6

Most of the core points in this thread are forcused on women fashion, so I listed up some Japanese domestic brands for Men. I like those brands more
than international brands and top laxury brands. I don't know much about other foreign country's trends, but I'm supposed Japan has a lot for men, too.

Most American still think Japan= temporary fashion, Europe=classic fashion, Hong Kong and China are where most of the clothing made, and the evil US making all the money...hehee
As a guy from Asia living in US my whole life, I will say US start taking more notice on Japanese fashion but still not to the point American will wear them, polo shirt still the king here. Sometime I do wish we can be little more fashionable.

A lot of Japan's fashion influence is not with the brand names, but with the style of clothing in general, which can be adopted by the mass brands / no name brands. Korea and Hong Kong seem to have followed those trends.

However, Japanese are far more extreme in their use and combination of clothing styles than their neighbors.

Teen fashion retailer Abercrombie says first Asian store to open in Tokyo in 2009
7 August 2007

NEW ALBANY, Ohio (AP) - Abercrombie & Fitch, which opened its first store outside of North America this spring in London, announced plans Tuesday for its first store in Asia.

The teen fashion retailer said it has signed a lease for a store in Tokyo that will open in late 2009 in the city's famed Ginza shopping district.

Encouraged by the success of its store on London's celebrated Savile Row, Abercrombie begun to expand overseas. Chief Executive and Chairman Mike Jeffries said in May that the London store was on track to generate more sales per square foot than the company's flagship store on New York's Fifth Avenue.

Abercrombie, based in this Columbus suburb, operates 362 Abercrombie & Fitch stores, 186 abercrombie stores for children, 418 Hollister Co. stores and 17 RUEHL stores in the United States. It also has three Abercrombie & Fitch stores and three Hollister locations in Canada.

Actually, I had not known the brand of 'A Bathing Ape' (BAPE) until I read the article about the BAPE boom among hip hop fans in South Korea, several month ago.
The clothing of BAPE sell at a premium even in NY.

Tokyo deserves to be higher in that list. It's the street and underground fashion central. It should be number three or something (behind only Paris and Milan) and tied with London. New Yorkers are generally generically dressed.

Jeez, H&M is really very confident about their venture in Japan.

I mean, putting up shop in a certainmarket is one thing. Putting-up an 11-storey behemoth is another. It's gonna be the largest stand-alone H&M store in the world.
