Below are pictures taken of the Auto Africa 2006 show, this show is held annually in Johannesburg alongside the other
international shows such as Detroit, Paris auto show etc. This show is normally held at Nasrec, normally around
the 30th October - 9th November each year. The exhibition is one of only 22 exhibitions worldwide that are on the
International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) list of accredited international motor shows and draws
over 25,000 visitors. The South African auto industry typically spends over $20 million to organize this annual trade show.

Actually when i went there, there was quite a lot of my peeps. Its just that most of these pictures are taken during the course of the week. Most of my people go to this show on weekends. But yeah, SA still has a lot of work by way of racial representativity, although these pictures tend to paint a much bleaker image than the reality.

When you go to malls on the right days (mostly weekends) you will see that there are tons and tons of black people there who are now comfortably in the middle class. I guess what it shows is that the business owner class is still largely white dominated and so that class has the flexibility to go to a mall or auto show on a friday or thursday while the black people would have to be stuck at work and only attend on weekends.

I dont see how these comments are warunted, I know you guys meant no harm by them. The Auto Africa show takes place in Nasrec, which is in Joburg, the closest residential suburb/ area to Nasrec is Soweto which is 99% black populated. Now the prices for the entrance might be a bit steap for this show at R250 per person, but as Kulani can agree with me when I say that every single rand for that ticket is worth it, infact I fly up just to see the show. Its Africa's premier Auto Show, & it does get its fare share of black audience, as Kulani did say in his above post that during the week, many are at work & weekends are bumper full!

Its intriguing to see that many if not all you are generally looking at one thing & that is the colour of the people that are in the picture, honestly being a thread about the car show, one would have thought the purpose is to look at the cars, not the people around them, I dunno, that's just me :dunno:

Now this is the part that pisses me off, LOL. They make a BMW 3 series in South Africa, export it to the US, Australia, UK and sell it there for like $28,000 and then sell it to us poor South Africans for $38,000. I can't wait for the competition commission to bust this cartel. But the funniest thing is that we are still queuing to buy these cars even at the much higher price. I recently saw the prices for the Hummer H3 now being made in SA, Port Elizabeth and it was being launched in Leeds, UK, and the price was like 30% lower than what we are paying for the same car. And you can't import it back from the UK, cause the customs are so high it makes the whole exercise futile. There are a few industries that are a complete rip-off in SA and those include Auto industry, telecommunications and banks. No wonder they have grown into such huge giants. All those industries are currently in front of the competition commission for colluding to keep prices higher and ripping consumers. I hope the commission really bust their little cartels. Can you even believe that MTN had the guts to tell the regulators that the higher prices they are charging benefits poor people. Because they are using that money to fund roll-out in rural areas that would not be profitable. And then the auto guys hide behind all kinds of bullshit to justify their prices. Matt sorry for ranting and displaying my anger. I will try get you some prices for all the different BMW models.

Car makers lead local economy

JOB CREATION: The motor industry is the region’s primary private employer, providing work for 13 000 people

As exports boom, region is poised to produce half the vehicles made in South Africa, writes Linda Doke

The automotive sector in Nelson Mandela Bay plays a significant role in the economic success of the region and the plan is to drive growth in this region forward to a point where output exceeds 50% of the country’s vehicle production by the end of this year.

“The provincial government funds the Automotive Industrial Development Centre [AIDC], which develops the supply chain through a variety of skills development interventions. In addition, the province has assisted the metro to fund the Auto Supply Park in Uitenhage,” said Kevin Wakeford, economic adviser to the premier of the Eastern Cape.

Home to three of the largest vehicle manufacturers and exporters in South Africa — Volkswagen, General Motors and Ford — as well as automotive parts manufacturers, the sector employs more than 13 000 people. The industry is the area’s primary private employer and accounts for about 14% of the country’s manufacturing employment.

The bay is home to the bulk of South Africa’s catalytic converter manufacturers, accounting for 8% of world production.

Automotive component producers are involved in the manufacture of engines, tyres, glass, body panels, interior fittings and plastic components.

As the largest exporter of vehicles from the African continent, Volkswagen of SA (VW of SA) is a leader in the passenger car market in South Africa, with more than 49 000 cars sold in the local market since January 2007.

With more than 6000 permanent employees at its plant in Uitenhage, the company is the largest employer in the city.

“VW of SA’s contribution to the region is significant. In salaries and wages alone we put in the area of R850-million a year into the economy of the city,” said Bill Stephens, GM of communications at Volkswagen of SA.

Between 2000 and the end of 2008, the company will have invested around R6-billion in new vehicle models, a new paint shop, and a truck and bus assembly plant. Exports play a major role in the operation. They are focused on Polos and Golfs sent to the Asia Pacific region, with Japan as the major customer.

“In 2006, we exported 35500 passenger cars, imported 24 000 vehicles, and exported about R2.2-billion worth of automotive components, altogether using about 70% of the capacity of the car terminal at PE harbour,” said Stephens.

As the only plant manufacturing the Citi Golf brand in the world, the Uitenhage operation will have built 500 000 units of the model by the end of 2007. VW of SA will have manufactured a total of 2.5million vehicles at the plant since it opened in 1951.

General Motors South Africa (GMSA) assembles, distributes, imports and exports vehicles and components from its two manufacturing plants in Port Elizabeth. Since the company’s return to South Africa in 2004, it has invested almost R2-billion in facility and equipment upgrades, new model introductions, warehousing and a manufacturing facility for the Hummer H3. The company will be investing a further R620-million in operations during this financial year.

The operation has become the headquarters for the company on the African continent. South Africa is GM’s largest market in Africa and the second-largest in the regions of Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

Denise van Huyssteen, communications manager for GMSA, said that the company’s volumes had grown from 40000 in 2004 to 87121 in 2006.

“The Hummer H3 was launched in June and is expected to further boost growth. Our R3-billion export programme for the vehicle has created 500 new jobs at our plant and will supply markets in the Middle East, Europe, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Israel,” said Van Huyssteen.

Locally manufactured Toyota Corollas head to Europe

by Thapelo Sakoana, BuaNews

As from next year, the South African subsidiary of motor company Toyota is expected to export its locally produced Toyota Corollas from Durban to Europe - a move set to boost the economy of KwaZulu-Natal.

The decision was taken following a meeting on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan between the provincial government and Toyota representatives.

At the meeting with KwaZulu-Natal Premier S’bu Ndebele, the vice chairperson of Toyota Motor Corporation, Katsuhiro Nakagawa said Toyota South Africa would produce Corollas specifically to be exported to Europe.

Mr Nakagawa announced that about 50 engineers had already been sent to South Africa to help with the manufacturing of the vehicles.

"Toyota is determined to produce more vehicles in South Africa which can be exported to other countries.

"The exporting of vehicles from South Africa to other countries is very important for South Africa's economy. The automotive industry is also important for the development of South Africa," he said.

He said they also wanted an increased presence in Japanese automotive parts suppliers in South Africa as the country was considered to be the gateway to the rest of Africa.

"We want to make our South African plant more competitive compared to Toyota plants in other countries," he said.

In a bid to ensure the competitiveness of their South African plant, he acknowledged that the training of workers would be important to achieve this.

"If we skill more workers, more automotive parts supplier companies will come to South Africa".

He explained that they planned to establish a Toyota Training School in South Africa, which would benefit the company's employees and create a much needed skills base for growth.

"We want to listen to the voice of the workers to be able to produce more vehicles, more efficiently and effectively. Training, development and education of our workforce must be intensified," said Nakagawa.

The production of the latest model of the Toyota Corolla in South Africa is currently proceeding well and will be launched in August this year.

"However, we are trying hard to introduce new models of Toyota to be produced in South Africa as well," he said.

Premier Ndebele appreciated the confidence shown by the company to South Africa, particularly KwaZulu-Natal.

"We appreciate the new investment of more than R4 billion at the plant at Prospecton in Durban. However, we would like to see Toyota producing other automotive components in KwaZulu-Natal as well," he said.

Ndebele said they would welcome the development of an Automotive Supplier Park in the province.

He said it was important to accelerate training of the current and future workforce.

"Continuous training is very important. We have to train all the time. For the market in South Africa, the market in Africa and the market elsewhere, training is important," he said.

Expect the roar of F1 in Sandton

July 25, 2007
By JoNews Reporter

THE ING Renault F1 Roadshow – which will turn the streets of Sandton into a local Monaco – could be the start of bigger things. "IT has long been the dream of the City council and big business in Johannesburg to stage another Formula 1 Grand Prix, and to become a permanent venue on the Formula 1 calendar," says Spencer Pillai, the general manager of the Johannesburg Tourism Company's convention bureau.

"We now have a good leverage mechanism to open the doors to the top echelons of motor racing, place Johannesburg on the Formula 1 map, and make the dream of a Johannesburg Grand Prix come true."

The ING Renault Fl team will hold spectacular motor racing demonstrations in the streets of Sandton this weekend, with the main event, the ING Formula 1 race on Sunday, 29 July at 4pm. The action starts on Fredman Drive at 10am. Several roads will be closed, including sections of West Street between Rivonia Road and Fredman Drive, Fredman Drive between West Street and Rivonia Road, and two lanes of Rivonia Road.

Pillai believes that the roadshow will enhance Johannesburg's status as a prime business and leisure tourism destination in South Africa.

"It is significant that Johannesburg has been chosen not only to be the first city in Africa to stage the roadshow, but also the first outside Eurasia."

The ING Renault F1 Roadshow, launched in 2003, has been seen by 1,5 million people in major cities in Europe, Russia, Japan and now South Africa.
Acting on behalf of the City council, the Johannesburg Tourism Company will facilitate the infrastructure Renault needs for its weekend showcase, including location and layout of the circuit, street closures, the position of spectators and the availability of emergency services.

Pillai says a special event such as the ING Renault F1 Roadshow underlines Jozi's status as the business capital of South Africa and as a prime destination for international business tourism.

Now in its fourth year, there will be a street parade, a 20-lap Cycle Lab Sprint Challenge, motor-racing demonstrations and entertainment - including drummers, a variety of dancers, rickshaws and acrobatics.

Over at Nelson Mandela Square, a Formula One paddock will contain Renault racing cars and other – tamer - Renault vehicles and Formula One memorabilia. Visitors will also be able to chat to Formula One racing driver Giancarlo Fisichella and test driver Nelson Piquet Junior, son of the legendary racer Nelson Piquet.

"Johannesburgers will have the opportunity to witness at close range the thrills and excitement of Formula One as Fisichella pilots Renault's F1 [car] through the streets of their home city," Pillai says.

if you are talking about population, its 80% black and 10% white with indians, coloureds, chinese etc makes up the balance. However if you are talking about these pictures, I will summarize it by saying this. The best way to make sense of it is to understand the impact that apartheid had on income inequality between blacks and whites and also the fact that Sandton (where these pictures were taken) is the richest square mile in South Africa.

Impressive pics so far! SA is truly world class, I have to confess it! :)

But as far as Motorrace culture in Africa is concerned: certainly it is in Angola

But when it comes to motorracing lets NOT forget that there are two international autodromes in Angola in Luanda and Benguela , the one in Luanda was built by a stararchitect and inaugurated in 1972.

You easily find hundreds of photos on the web that show that Angola had and has a very strong motorace presence.

the Grand Huila Motorace has been brought back to life last year.

So guys, expect this country to come up with new motorace chmampions....and it is certainly in the interest of Sonangol, too to sponsor them.

I read in a personal blog that there are many more Ricardo Teixeira´s that could come out in Angola once the autodromes gets fully rehabilitated.

You might not notice it if you look like the people in the pictures. Many Africans will tend to notice the lack of certain people even as models. If you go to the New York auto show, you will see more African models fronting the cars than you would in Jo'burg, very strange indeed.

Nairoberry, to round it off now. SA is certainly not unique in this aspect. The most mixed and multi-racial nation in the entire world is beyond any doubt Brazil. No nation on this planet matches and eventually will ever match Brazil in the next 100 years to come. In Brazil you see people having black, white and indio blood beautifully mixed. Into the bargain, Brazil has the strongest black community outside of Nigeria.

The UK, France, Canada, the US just to name a few more are all multi-racial countries, too!

SA is becoming more of a class based society than racial, the division is becoming between the have's and the have nots, regardless of race. White poverty is increasing and black poverty is decreasing.

Really? Actually when referring to "our" I was actually talking about the western mindset. A racially divided society, where one's opportunities are dictated by the color of your skin is not tolerated and rightfully so. However when its based on class theirs little condemnation.

Just for your information Brazil is one of the best examples of a socially divided society, so the fact that I'm talking about it shouldn't come as a surprise. "Educated" Brazilians like to talk about how bad inequality is, yet their own perspective on poor people is one of arrogance and general dislike.
