Iligan City (April 8) -- To avert the worsening power crisis in Southern Philippines, a US$ 750-million hydroelectric power plant is set to rise in the three towns of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur provinces.

It is financed by the Exim Bank of China.

The Agus lll hydroelectric power plants will be constructed along the Agus River complex within Saguiaran in Lanao del Sur and the municipalities of Pantar and Balo-i in Lanao del Norte.

If completed, the 80-hectare Agus lll hydroelectric power plant will produce 240 megawatts and big plus factor to support the Mindanao grid.

The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted Wednesday morning where provincial officials and other power stakeholders were present.

The provincial officials said the rising of new hydroelectric power plant is a big help in the current power problem in Mindanao and would also give more benefits and employment opportunities.

Officials in the two provinces very much welcomed this new development in the midst of the power crisis that besets Mindanao.

However, some residents in Pantar staged protest a day before the groundbreaking ceremony because of alleged environmental issue that may affect the watershed of Lake Lanao.

Retired General Francisco Gudane, Agus III vice president for administration and security, has urged the residents along the three municipalities to cooperate for the successful implementation of the project, saying that this would give more benefits and employment opportunities for them and also big help to the Mindanao power problem.

However, the Agus lll plants will also depend from the fresh water of Lake Lanao, the second largest lake in the Philippines which is the main problem of the five Agus plants which is low water level due to El Nino weather phenomenon, forcing the state-owned National Power Corporation (Napocor) and National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to impose power curtailment to all 33 electric cooperatives spread all over the southern island since January this year.

The Agus lll plant will not also help the forthcoming national and local elections because the project would be completed within four years.

Meanwhile, as Mindanao's power consuming public still continue to suffer five to eight hours power outages because of Lake Lanao and Pulangi water problem and periodic maintenance of some fossil, banker, diesel and coal-fired plants, the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), together with the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP), is offering to assist and finance the power crisis in the island.

DBP President and chief executive officer Reynaldo G. David said the banking firm, along with LBP, will finance by funding the purchase or lease of generating units with capacity of up to 100 MW.

In normal situation, Mindanao grid needs close to 1,500 MW load capacity.

Thursday advisory of NGCP said the electric power available capacity is 782 MW. (muc/PIA-Caraga)

Construction of the Golden Mile has resumed with initial pile driving works at the Paseo del Rio area near Kagay-an Bridge. Initial clearing of the river abutments was conducted just recently as clearly shown in the next photos.
This area is located south of City Hall and will connect to the portion just beside the church. Hopefully, this will be fast-tracked to pave the way for the Paseo del Rio project of the Pelaez Group located right behind the bridge.

While work on the south has commenced, the Golden Mile’s north extension as seen below also has progressed. After reclamation, piles are now seen at the site. A pile driver and a back hoe were seen onsite. This connects to the portion beside the ongoing expansion of City Hall. Reclamation has now reached right at the back of the proposed amphitheater or just fronting the lot where the proposed 30-storey City Center will be built.

Exterior painting of the proposed Gaisano Building along Julio Pacana Street is now on-going. Still, no tarpaulin, or billboard or any indication of what the building really is…. more likely similar to Gaisano Suki Club in Cogon, a stand alone grocery store.

The colors are also fresh….unlike old Gaisano buildings. Interestingly, the old Estrella Hotel beside it is also being demolished/renovated as seen in the photos below.

If you’re going west from the city, you’ll notice this huge area on the left just passing Bulua proper with many heavy equipment doing all sorts of construction work. This project is said to be that of the proposed Gaisano Bulua. There is no official press release yet but city officials have announced in some radio and tv interviews about this project a month ago. The area is just fronting De Oro Pacific Home Plus, where you can see the movie billboards of what is showing in Gaisano Cinemas.

I don’t see any rendering or perspective of the project onsite but rumors state that this building will have three floors. Construction started a couple of weeks ago but work was concentrated on the other end of the property, unnoticeable from passing motorists along the highway. Not until last week that the earthworks have now included the area near the highway and frequency of passage of dump trucks and heavy equipment have increased considerably.

Currently, excavations along the perimeter is being undertaken with other excavations perhaps for the foundations and septic vault. Circular steel columns are also visible in some areas. As seen in one of the photos below, the contractor even has its own crushing plant onsite. This project I think aims to cater to customers from the western part of Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental. With extensive commercial development in the city proper, this project will alleviate the traffic problem by filtering incoming vehicles whose purpose is to shop. I just hope this development has enough space for parking.

Mindanao University of Science and Technology, Cagayan de Oro City’s only state university is currently in the midst of a 6-year massive infrastructure development, just a year after its conversion into a university.
The 2010-2015 strategic plan for the complex involves twenty (20) developments which involves five (5) existing buildings, two (2) newly completed buildings, one (1) on-going construction, and twelve (12) more buildings to be constructed.

The existing buildings are Learning Resource Center Bldg. (#14 on layout), Girls Trade Bldg. (#19), Chemistry Bldg. (#12), Gym and Old Admin Bldg. (#3), and the Integrated Tech. Bldg. 3 &4 (#5). Because the Gym was gutted by fire, I expect a new University Gym to rise….
The newly completed buildings are ICT Bldg. (#7), and Admin Bldg. (#8), with the latter being called as the “glass house”.
The Science Complex (#11) located on the north side of the former football field is under construction.

Next to be constructed will be the 5-storey Engineering Complex (#4).
Also on the list as reflected on the plan are: a new Main Gate (#1), Cultural Center (#2), a multi-storey Commercial Bldg. (#18), Tech. Bldg. (#6), Athletics & Rrecreational Facilities (#9), Admin Support Facilities (#10), College of Arts & Sciences Bldg. (#13), Student Center (#15), College of Policy Studies, Educ. & Mgt. Bldg. (#16), Cafeteria Bldg. (#17), and lastly a Dormitory (#20) at the back of the complex.
Below are the closer views of the different parts of the new MUST Complex.

The Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) is investing some P800 million for various infrastructure and building projects within their complex at Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City.

MUST recently inaugurated its 4-storey Information and Communications Technology and 3-storey Administration Buildings, both state of the art architectural pieces. Groundbreaking for the P134.6 million Science Complex was also held.

The glassy new Science Complex Building of the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) is now rising steadily at the campus grounds. We’ll see a tower crane in the coming days as construction is expected to be in full blast following foundation works.

As seen below, work on the main columns have been effected and ground floor level has been raised…the ground is flood-prone.

PROJECT WATCH: Gaisano Cugman update

Construction of Businessman Stephen Gaisanos building in Cugman is still ongoing. Latest updates revealed workers are now working on the second level of the 2-storey commercial building project.

As seen in the following photos, the lengthy structure of the project resembles an arcade or strip-type commercial development. Notably, the area behind this building is still very wide good for expansion areas perhaps more warehouse for Gaisano. Note that in the main photo above, you can see the new concrete fence built by Gaisano in the background showing that the boundary of the property extends to the hill behind it.

If this is indeed an arcade similar to Rosario Strip, then this is very ideal for those who want to avoid traffic in Lapasan and city proper. This site is good for restaurants, coffee shops, convenience stores and restobars. But still, only Mr. Gaisano knows what this project is.

Even in CdeO, Gwen Pimentel didn't get the number of votes that she expected. Kasalanan 'to ng tatay nya na maraming projects na di naman tinapos. Gaya ng convention center na 'to, almost a decade na and still counting.

Mao, infamous na ang mga Pimentel sa CDO. Btw congrats pala kay Teofisto Guingona III sa bag-ohay niyang pagkaproklamar sa pagkasenator. The only one Mindanaoan senatoriables na nakapasok sa magic 12. :cheers: :cheers:

Isumbong natin yan sa Fire Department para masusi nila. Peligro na sa sunog kasi walay klaro ang ventilation. LOL

Anyway, if Gaisano Mall yung sa Bulua, hope modern na ang design sama sa Gaisano Mall Iligan. Di na yung late 80's to 90's ang design. :)

Construction of the glassy Science Complex Building of the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) is currently on a fast pace. Work is now on the 4th-5th floor. The use of the tower crane by UKC Builders Inc. has helped significantly in the newest building in the campus.

At the rate and as you can see in the following photos, this building could be completed before the year ends. My only concern will be its impact on the classes which be held right next to the site. School opening is set next week.

The bus terminal is seem stunning, hope we can see the render! It has features serving like an airport terminal. :cheers: I had wished this Agora market and terminal be replaced. Years back, I remembered this awful signature smell when you pass by a certain area on the street. That smell is truly Agora, not present in other public markets..but that was then, I don't know now. :lol::lol:

CONSTRUCTION of different buildings at the P7.853 billion (US$167.09 million) Laguindingan International Airport in Laguindingan town, Misamis Oriental are now in full swing, a report from Project Management Office (PMO) of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) said.

As of July 18, the passenger terminal building is now 22.86 percent complete while the operation and control tower building is now 24.27 percent complete.

Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency

Other structures at the airport such as the power house building is now 38.61 percent complete and the cargo terminal building now stood at 24.91 percent complete while the crash fire and rescue building is 28.95 percent complete.

The maintenance building, cold water receiving station, administration building, waste water treatment plant and other airport support facilities are also nearing completion through the efforts of contractor Hanjin Heavy Industries and Const. Co. Ltd.

Hanjin is in-charge of the airport's P5.279 billion worth of civil works and buildings, which include the 45-meter runway, taxiways A and B, main apron, the passenger terminal building, the operation and control tower building, power house building, cargo terminal building, maintenance building, cold water receiving station, administration building, waste water treatment plant, and other airport support facilities.

Construction of buildings and civil works at the airport started on January 18, 2008 and is expected to be finished by January 17, 2012.

For the air navigation system and support facilities, estimated to cost P743.399 million (US$15.817 million), implementation is set to start in the second quarter of 2010 and is expected to be finished by the second quarter of 2012.

The minutes of discussion (MOD) between the Korea Export-Import Bank and the Government of the Philippines for the air navigation system and support facilities was already signed on May 21, 2010 but bid documents are still being finalized by Yooshin Engineering Corp. in consultation with Kexim and DOTC Bids and Awards Committee.

Meanwhile, the access road leading to the airport is already finished while the DOTC is still in the process of paying the 2.99 hectares of land not yet acquired for the main airport. But the PMO said this land is outside the work area and will not affect the ongoing construction.

The Laguindingan International Airport, which sits in a 418.14 hectare area, is envisioned to be a new major trunkline airport to be constructed and operated based on the relevant standards and recommended practices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It aims to cater to the increasing aviation traffic demand not only in Northern Mindanao but the whole island of Mindanao.

The total project cost of the airport when it was approved by the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) Investment Coordination Committee-Cabinet Committee (ICC-CC) on June 13, 1995 was pegged at P707.80 million (US$36.77 million) but was later revised to P7.853 billion (US$167.09 million).

The airport's total project cost is sourced from EDCF-Republic of Korea (US$30.60 million), KEXIM Bank Export Credit (US62.75 million), Government of the Philippines (US$60.36 million) and EDCF-ANSSFSP (US$13.38 million).

City Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Emano has outlined his flagship projects for his 3-year term: Establishment of a City College, Privatization of Garbage Collection, Development of New Sanitary Landfill, Creation of New Barangays and Third Legislative District of Cagayan de Oro City.

This even as Emano created yesterday four Ad Hoc Committees primarily tasked “to study and propose measures” on the matters within 60 days or two months.

The creation of the four multi-agency Ad Hoc Committees was formalized by Mayor Emano after the latter simultaneously issued Executive Order Nos. 007, 008, 009 and 010 on July 27, 2010. City Councilor Adrian L. Barba was named as Ad Hoc Chairman who will prepare feasibility study, conduct documentation and propose measures for the establishment, maintenance and operation of a City College, to be known as the ”Pamantasan ng Cagayan de Oro”.

Noting that while the City Government has a College Scholarship Program, Mayor Emano explained that it is more practical and prudent to establish a City College in order to accommodate more poor students who could not enroll in private colleges and universities due to high tuition fees.

The body is tasked to look for appropriate school site, determine the courses offered and the scholarship program; the composition, terms of office and honoraria of the Board of Trustees and its powers, duties, functions and responsibilities; and the initial funding.

The second committee, chaired by neophyte City Councilor Nadya B. Emano-Elipe, will study and propose measures for the privatization of the city’s garbage collection, citing that the increasing volume of solid wastes is hard to cope with a growing metropolis like Cagayan de Oro City.

“The privatization of garbage collection is one of the options in order to address the city’s cleanliness and sanitation,” Mayor Emano stressed.

In relation to this, a third committee, with comebacking City Councilor Alvin R. Calingin as its Chairman, was also created to identify, acquire and develop an area suitable for a new dumpsite or sanitary landfill.

Mayor Emano reasoned that the development of a new landfill or dumpsite is necessary because the existing sanitary landfill at Upper Dagong in barangay Carmen has been overtaken by the city’s growth and progress, thus needs its immediate transfer to a new location.

The Mayor added that the transfer of the present sanitary landfill will also pave the way for the physical development of the area as ‘another economic growth center’ of the city.

“And besides, it is no longer conforming to the requirements of R.A. 9003 or Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2003, the Clean Air Act, and other laws, rules and regulations,” he pointed out.

The last Ad Hoc Committee, chaired by City Councilor Ramon G. Tabor, will study and propose measures for the creation of new barangays and third legislative district of Cagayan de Oro City.

By dividing big barangays of the city through a plebiscite, Mayor Emano is optimistic that better delivery of basic services to the people would be ensured. “The people of Cagayan de Oro City could also have an equal representation in Congress, aside from getting more benefits from the national government, if a third legislative district is created,“ Mayor Emano concluded. The city government is set to undertake a multi-million peso project to modernize the traffic system with the installation of a close-circuit television camera to at least 50 junctions in the entire city in the coming months.

This was disclosed during the meeting of the Committee on Public Utilities chaired by city councilor Alden Bacal on Thursday.

Bacal told Mindanao Gold Star Daily that at least six interested private companies have initially signified their intention to tender their interest on the said undertaking of City Mayor Vicente Emano’s administration.

The installation of the new traffic system would cost the city amounting to P150 million or more depending on the companies’ proposals. Some other companies offered a Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT) Scheme.

The new traffic system includes the installation of a traffic control and monitoring center that would possibly house the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA).

“There is also a pending proposal to professionalize the RTA personnel considering that they would be manning the entire traffic system,” he said.

He said for the past 12 years, the traffic system of Cagayan de Oro has already been declared obsolete and some that were non-functional as among other contributing factors of the worsening traffic situation in the city.

“I already asked the RTA to identify major junctions in the city that need the installation of a modern traffic light,” he said.

Initially, the RTA has submitted 15 major junctions which include Bulua junction near Bulua Gym, Kauswagan-Bulua highway junction; Kauswagan-Liceo junction; Recto-Licoan junction; Recto-Corrales junction; Osmeña-Recto junction; Megacenter junction in Lapasan; Gusa-Galaxy junction; Puerto junction; Velez-Luna junction; Yacapin-Velez junction; JR Borja-Velez junction; Velez-Divisoria junction; Velez-Tirso Neri junction and KSY junction near Carmen bridge.

However, Emano recommends to install another 35 streetlights to other major and minor junctions in the entire city including those with commercial complexes.

With the implementation of the modern traffic system, the RTA is also tasked to set-up new traffic plan for re-routing inside the city limits which affects all public utility vehicles like jeepneys, motorela, motorized sikad and multicabs.

Bacal said they would not implement the new-rerouting scheme until such time that the modern traffic system would be installed in all major and minor thoroughfares.

The city government still welcomes proposals from other companies.

CdeO has really broken away from Iloilo and Bacolod from the contention of being the 4th city in the Philippines. The way I see it, CdeO is now where Davao was 10 years ago plus the malls. Davao on the other hand is where Cebu was in the mid 90's..quite a gap actually but who knows, with the rate of CdeO's progress it may be on Cebu's heels in 5-10 years. :cheers:

MANILA, Philippines - Encouraged by the brisk take-up rate of its projects, property giant Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) has ramped up the number of residential units it is selling this year from 9,200 to 12,000.

On the sidelines of the REIT forum yesterday, ALI chief financial officer Jaime Ysmael said the company is very bullish on the prospects of the real estate industry this year as evidenced by its aggressive product launches.

“We’ve been seeing strong demand across all our product lines. So from 9,000, we are now targeting to sell 12,000 units,” Ysmael said.

This means that the company would generate more than P40 billion from the estimated total sales from the 9,200 units originally planned to be disposed off this year.

ALI’s business units include Ayala Land Premier (which is best known for its exclusive and distinctive developments that appeal to the high-end market), Alveo Land Corp. (which targets the young urban professionals), Avida (which caters to middle-income families aspiring to own their first home), and the newly-launched Amaia (which caters to the economic housing segment).

Amaia Scapes – the initial project of Amaia – will make available a total of 2,000 units to rise on a 20-hectare property in San Pedro, Laguna. The first 1,300 units, priced at between P600 thousand and P1.2 million, are targeted to be launched within the year.

ALI has drawn up a five-year plan through 2014 that will involve the construction of 46 projects in 17 targeted key growth centers across the country in line with its goal to double its net profit over the next five years.

The company is seeking to achieve a 15 percent return on equity within five years or more than double the eight percent registered in 2009.

The group will launch its own boutique hotel business with at least five already being planned for construction this year.

In the retail segment, on top of continuing the expansion of regional malls, the group will enter into smaller formats known as community and neighborhood centers, to tap a broader consumer segment and address increasing customer sophistication and preference for convenience. The first of the six planned for launch this year will be rolled out in Cavite.

Around P6 billion is being budgeted for the six small retail centers to rise in Cagayan De Oro, Baguio, Cavite, Bacolod and Iloilo.

With demand for BPO space on the uptrend again with industry revenues expected to grow to at least 25 percent this year, ALI is pursuing its expansion outside Mega Manila where higher cost efficiencies can be generated .

The company is building BPO offices in Iloilo, Cagayan De Oro, Subic and Cavite to prepare for the second wave of its BPO rollout program which is expected to boost ALI’s current market share.
For this year, ALI has budgeted P27.2 billion for its capital expenditure program to be funded from internally generated funds and possible borrowings.

CITY Mayor Vicente Y. Emano made a facelift of the Cagayan de Oro Historical and Cultural Commission by changing its name and appointing new people to head the organization.

Now called the Cagayan de Oro City Heritage Council, it will now be headed by former city councilor Lourdes La Viña as chairperson and Thaddeus Bautista as vice chairperson. Sitting as members are Paulita Agnes Roa, Lawyer Leon Gan, Eileen San Juan, and Sandy Bas.

Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency

Aside from being the chairperson, La Viña also serves as the executive overseer of the office of the Cagayan de Oro City Heritage Council.

Emano said La Viña is his first choice for the council's chairmanship since she belongs to the Chaves-Roa, Abejuela family and a native Kagay-anon who has wide knowledge of the city's historical background.

Bautista, meanwhile, is the son of Filomeno Bautista who wrote the Bautista Script and five genealogy books of five clans in the city.

Roa, who once served as member of the former heritage council, is an archeologist who belongs to the Roa clan in the city. She is a big contributor to the heritage council as she has completed research of the city's rich history.

San Juan is one of the pillars of Promote CDO who handles the city's fiesta celebration while Bas is the original member of the Heritage Council and is presently a board of director of the Cagayan de Oro Water District.

Roa said Bas is of great help to the new team, citing the 10 years that they have worked together in the past.

She said Bas knows every bound in the city.

"I am very thankful to Mayor Emano for providing a strong team that will preserve and promote the history and culture of Cagayan de Oro so that the future children of the city will be able to grasp and appreciate the value of where they come from," Roa said.

She said they are all excited to work together since they have lots of plans on how to make the people be informed of the rich culture of Cagayan de Oro.

As part of their agenda, Roa said their first priority is the City Museum as they intend to make it more informative to the "eyes and hearts" of every Kagay-anon.

The commission was created by virtue of Executive Order No.006-10 and is tasked to lay out plans, programs and activities that aim towards the promotion, preservation and development of the city's cultural and heritage sites. (Nicole J. Managbanag)

This was revealed by City Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Emano during his weekly radio program yesterday, saying that a Manila-based investor has expressed keen interest to bankroll on the proposed hotel project. “He (investor) will definitely put up a very high-end hotel in Cagayan de Oro City,” Mayor Emano assured. “This (proposed hotel) is comparable to the best in Metro Manila,” the City Mayor added. Though he did not divulge the name of the investor, Mayor Emano hinted that the said investor, whom he met several times at his office during the latter’s frequent visits to the city, has a ‘very large businesses in Cagayan de Oro City’. Mayor Emano said the investor will not solely finance the construction of the hotel project, but will also rely on the capital investment from his foreign partners. (City Information Office)

The city government is set to undertake a multi-million peso project to modernize the traffic system with the installation of a close-circuit television camera to at least 50 junctions in the entire city in the coming months.

This was disclosed during the meeting of the Committee on Public Utilities chaired by city councilor Alden Bacal on Thursday.

Bacal told Mindanao Gold Star Daily that at least six interested private companies have initially signified their intention to tender their interest on the said undertaking of City Mayor Vicente Emano’s administration.

The installation of the new traffic system would cost the city amounting to P150 million or more depending on the companies’ proposals. Some other companies offered a Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT) Scheme.

The new traffic system includes the installation of a traffic control and monitoring center that would possibly house the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA).

“There is also a pending proposal to professionalize the RTA personnel considering that they would be manning the entire traffic system,” he said.

He said for the past 12 years, the traffic system of Cagayan de Oro has already been declared obsolete and some that were non-functional as among other contributing factors of the worsening traffic situation in the city.

“I already asked the RTA to identify major junctions in the city that need the installation of a modern traffic light,” he said.

Initially, the RTA has submitted 15 major junctions which include Bulua junction near Bulua Gym, Kauswagan-Bulua highway junction; Kauswagan-Liceo junction; Recto-Licoan junction; Recto-Corrales junction; Osmeña-Recto junction; Megacenter junction in Lapasan; Gusa-Galaxy junction; Puerto junction; Velez-Luna junction; Yacapin-Velez junction; JR Borja-Velez junction; Velez-Divisoria junction; Velez-Tirso Neri junction and KSY junction near Carmen bridge.

However, Emano recommends to install another 35 streetlights to other major and minor junctions in the entire city including those with commercial complexes.

With the implementation of the modern traffic system, the RTA is also tasked to set-up new traffic plan for re-routing inside the city limits which affects all public utility vehicles like jeepneys, motorela, motorized sikad and multicabs.

Bacal said they would not implement the new-rerouting scheme until such time that the modern traffic system would be installed in all major and minor thoroughfares.

The city government still welcomes proposals from other companies.

MANILA, Philippines - Encouraged by the brisk take-up rate of its projects, property giant Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) has ramped up the number of residential units it is selling this year from 9,200 to 12,000.

On the sidelines of the REIT forum yesterday, ALI chief financial officer Jaime Ysmael said the company is very bullish on the prospects of the real estate industry this year as evidenced by its aggressive product launches.

“We’ve been seeing strong demand across all our product lines. So 9,000, we are now targeting to sell 12,000 units,” Ysmael said.

This means that the company would generate more than P40 billion from the estimated total sales from the 9,200 units originally planned to be disposed off this year.

ALI’s business units include Ayala Land Premier (which is best known for its exclusive and distinctive developments that appeal to the high-end market), Alveo Land Corp. (which targets the young urban professionals), Avida (which caters to middle-income families aspiring to own their first home), and the newly-launched Amaia (which caters to the economic housing segment).

Amaia Scapes – the initial project of Amaia – will make available a total of 2,000 units to rise on a 20-hectare property in San Pedro, Laguna. The first 1,300 units, priced at between P600 thousand and P1.2 million, are targeted to be launched within the year.

ALI has drawn up a five-year plan through 2014 that will involve the construction of 46 projects in 17 targeted key growth centers across the country in line with its goal to double its net profit over the next five years.

The company is seeking to achieve a 15 percent return on equity within five years or more than double the eight percent registered in 2009.

The group will launch its own boutique hotel business with at least five already being planned for construction this year.

In the retail segment, on top of continuing the expansion of regional malls, the group will enter into smaller formats known as community and neighborhood centers, to tap a broader consumer segment and address increasing customer sophistication and preference for convenience. The first of the six planned for launch this year will be rolled out in Cavite.

Around P6 billion is being budgeted for the six small retail centers to rise in Cagayan De Oro, Baguio, Cavite, Bacolod and Iloilo.

With demand for BPO space on the uptrend again with industry revenues expected to grow to at least 25 percent this year, ALI is pursuing its expansion outside Mega Manila where higher cost efficiencies can be generated .

The company is building BPO offices in Iloilo, Cagayan De Oro, Subic and Cavite to prepare for the second wave of its BPO rollout program which is expected to boost ALI’s current market share.
For this year, ALI has budgeted P27.2 billion for its capital expenditure program to be funded from internally generated funds and possible borrowings.

SORSOGON CITY, July 30 (PNA) – There is a mounting demand for ostrich in the international market and local agriculture authorities want investors and farmers in Bicol to consider such presage for a profitable business opportunity.

According to Sorsogon provincial agriculturist David Gillego, albeit profitability prospects, there is no known commercial ostrich raiser in the region yet while in the national scope, the still limited number that exists have to work at one fell swoop to meet the demand abroad.

There are big breeders in the country like the first and biggest located in Misamis Oriental established 13 years ago, the Gross Farm in Nueva Ecija, the Red Ostrich Farm in Bustos, Bulacan, Global Farm in Valenzuela City and the Philippine Ostrich and Crocodile Farms in Cagayan de Oro City.

Production of these farms, however, could only support the also growing domestic demand, Gillego said.

Michael Gross, owner of the Gross Ostrich Farm, one of the largest cultivators in the Philippines, in an online article published by AgribusinessWeek said that his yield was pretty small to export ostrich livestock and products.

Gross was quoted as saying by the article that although there were some entrepreneurs and consumers abroad who want to acquire his livestock and products, he just shrugged off his shoulders and said: “Maybe one day we can export.”

There are only two kinds of people who get ostrich, according to Gross, a German national . First, those who want to venture into a similar business and second, those who are after its nourishing meat and its nifty parts.

Considered as the world’s largest living bird, ostriches can weigh between 225 and 350 pounds and could grow as tall as eight feet, which primarily answers why along with the kiwis, emus, rheas, penguins, kakapos, and cassowaries, ostriches are incapable of flying.

At first glance, one may notice their featherless stretched necks and well-built long legs, which may permit them to run a marathon at 70 kilometers per hour, at most. They’re also endowed with the ability to stride up to eight meters.

Above amazing trivia tidbits and whatnot, ostriches are finding more ways to amaze the world. Ostrich red meat, compared to beef or pork, contains less fat, calories and cholesterol. It shares the same appearance and taste with beef, but has a nutritional content similar to chicken and turkey.

With the continuous health trend in agricultural markets, demand for ostrich meat in the international markets constantly increases. The meat may be marketed in a variety of ways, such as cold cuts, frankfurters, pate, fillet steaks and jerky, in addition to fresh meat. Gross said.

That makes them a sensational alternative for health buffs and weight conscious people. Gross said ostrich meat is being served in fine dining establishments throughout the United States, Europe, and the Far East. Additionally, ostrich meat is fast-becoming popular in menus in gourmet diners.

Ostriches produce the world’s premiere exotic leather as well and collectively renowned for their strength and suppleness, ostrich leather can pin down oil, can be rebellious to cracking, stiffening and drying, he said.

Its inimitable quill pattern makes ostrich leather the first-rate leather of choice for high end exotic leather products produced in all the fashion capitals of the world.

Gross said brand names like Gucci, Tony Lama, Nocona, and Justin Boots use large quantities of ostrich leather in producing their top of the line leather products.

This was primarily why Joann Ching, owner of Red Ostrich Farm, in Bustos, Bulacan, one of the many homesteads of its kind in the country, thought it was a good investment to breed ostriches, according to AgribusinessWeek.

As a self-confessed animal lover, Ching admitted it was easy to devote time and capital to such venture, most especially with animals that are not demanding in terms of nutrition and maintenance.

In the Philippines, what are commonly bred and used for commercial purposes are Blue Necks (Southern African Ostrich), Red Necks (Northern African Ostrich) and African Blacks (domesticated ostrich).

Among these three, the African Blacks are the tamest, have higher egg production that can reach up to 100 eggs per year, and have lesser meat of approximately 35 kilograms. They are actually the result of a crossing between the different subspecies, with selection for nice fluffy feathers, high fertility and easy handling.

“Red Ostrich is the brainchild of a healthy lifestyle. We saw and recognized the global trend for healthy living and the need for healthier food options. This has led to the venture of ostrich breeding in the Philippines,” Ching said as quoted by in the AgribusinessWeek article.

Ostrich is rich in iron and protein similar to beef, pork and chicken but has almost 40 percent less fat, calories and cholesterol,” she said.

Set up in 2002, Red Ostrich, situated at Claro Santos Street, Bonga Mayor, Bustos, Bulacan, is engaged in the breeding of live ostriches, supply and processing of clean meat and tasteful ostrich leather, eggshells and feathers. They provide products that are competitive, reasonably priced, of top-quality, and distinct with clearly defined profits and steadfast supply, Ching said.

Startup capital for ostrich farming is much more than an ordinary poultry farm. Each breeder bird may cost about P40,000 and requires 200 square meter pen space. However, long term return on investment in this venture is lucrative, according to Gillego.

A hen can produce up to 100 eggs and at least 40 chicks annually that reach marketing age after only 407 days from conception. Each bird yields 1,800 kilogram (kg) of meat, 50 cubic meter of leather and 36 kg of feathers each year.

The female ostrich can continue this annual production up to 40 years and with proper management and utilization of husbandry technology, the overall production of one female ostrich during her “economic life” can reach 72 tons of meat, 2,000 square meter of leather and 1,450 kg of feathers.

The meat of an adult bird commands a price of about P400 to P800 per kg in the local market, Gillego said.

Ostrich, he said, requires relatively low maintenance as they can be nourished with low-cost feeds such as regular chicken feed and kangkong and these birds can thrive even in very poorly vegetated areas. They are also very adaptable and they thrive in extreme conditions.

They also regulate their body temperature in cold and hot weather as their feathers are good insulators, which can protect them from the heat, as well as protect them from heat loss during cold weather.

Typically, ostriches are raised commercially for their meat, hide and feathers. Ostrich farming is considered to be among the world’s most profitable agricultural ventures given the large variety of possible products from this endeavor and consequently have a high profit potential, Gillego said.

The largest living bird in the world lays the largest egg. The ostrich egg can measure up to 19 centimeters (cm) long and 15 cm wide. It can weigh up to 1.9 kg to command a price of up to P800 in the end user’s market.

Ostriches have been hunted for their flesh and plumes since ancient times. Today, the Department of Agriculture (DA) encourages ostrich farming as an alternative to poultry business to prevent food crisis in the country and to boost the country’s economic development, Gillego said.

Increasing the country’s production of this bird is an important step towards delivering a consistent supply of meat and by-products like leather, oil and bone-meal into the commercial marketplace, he added.

Gillego cited as example of a successful ostrich raising venture the Philippine Ostrich and Crocodile Farms, Inc. in an upland ranch owned by the Filipino-Chinese Limketkai family in Barangay Malanang, Cagayan de Oro City.

Apart from being a tourist spot where tourists are delighted by just watching the huge form and round innocent eyes of the ostriches presently numbering about 1,000 matured birds, the farm also supplies low-fat meat to fine diners in Metro Manila and other urban centers, he said.

With the continuous health trend in agricultural markets, demand for ostrich meat in the international markets constantly increases. The meat may be marketed in a variety of ways, such as cold cuts, frankfurters, pate, fillet steaks and jerky, in addition to fresh meat.

A premium cut of ostrich meat could be bought at P800 per kilo from its farm gate, choice cut at P500 and ground, P300. Eggs cost between P250 and P500 a piece, Gillego said.

From eggs alone, he said, the farm already generates P50,000 yearly through a single hen that produces an average of 100 pieces within the period, he said.

Given the profitability of this endeavor, he said that the Agriculture department had urged agricultural offices under local government units in Bicol to introduce the idea of ostrich farming among local farmers and investors. (PNA)

ROBINSONS HOMES, the provincial house and lot developer of Gokongwei-led property firm Robinsons Land Corp., has acquired a 29.6-hectare property in General Santos.

The move will allow the property firm to expand its commercial, retail, and residential operations in the south, the company said in a statement yesterday. “We will position this project as the premiere housing development in General Santos City,” Robinsons Homes General Manager Joan R. Cosico said in the statement.

The property, which is a 25-minute drive from General Santos International Airport, was acquired from the Integrated Credit & Corporate Services and the Star Two, Inc.

“We believe that General Santos is a growth market as evidenced by our investment in [the city’s] Robinsons Mall,” Ms. Cosico said.

The development plan for the property has yet to be completed.

Robinsons Homes has four projects in Mindanao: Robinsons Highlands in Davao City, and Robinsons Hillsborough Pointe, Richmond Hills, and Fresno Parkview, all in Cagayan de Oro.
Robinsons Land operates under four brands -- Robinsons Luxuria for the high-end market, Robinsons Residences for condominiums in central business districts, Robinsons Communities for the middle-income segment, and Robinsons Homes.

Robinsons Land is set to start the construction of its first shopping mall in the Northern Luzon province of Pangasinan and the 30th Robinsons mall nationwide. It will open a mall in Palawan next year, and Cebu and Quezon City in 2012.

Shares in Robinsons Land -- whose profits went down by 2.78% to P926.92 million in the first quarter -- rose to P13.74 apiece yesterday from P13.60 on Monday. -- N. J. C. Morales
