Northern Mindanao has 3rd highest per capita GRDP

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (6 August) -- Northern Mindanao had a per capita gross regional domestic product (GRDP) of Php17,183 in 2009, the 3rd highest among the 17 regions of the country, last year.

Thus revealed Linnito M. Pascual, Regional Division Head of the National Statistics Coordinating Board (NSCB), region 10, who said the national per capita GRDP average stood at Php15,528, during the period.

The GRDP is the aggregate of gross value added (GVA) of all resident producer units in the region, the estimates of which are based on current and constant valuations with 1985 as the base year.

"For better understanding, the acronym GDP (Gross Domestic Product) can be given a Tagalog translation of'Gawa Dito Pinas' (Made in the Philippines) so that GRDP could also mean "Gawa ng Region Dito sa Pinas" (Made in this region of the Philippines)," Pascual said.

Meanwhile, he said the National Capital Region (NCR), Metro Manila posted the highest per capita GRDP of Php40,838 in 2009, followed by the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) with Php19,007.

The rest of the regions had the following per capita GRDP: Region XI -Davao, Php15,696, Region VI- Central Visayas or, Php14,810, Region VI-Western Visayas, Php14,699, and Region IVA - Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon (Calabarzon), Php14,209.

Region XII - South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and Gen. Santos (SOCCSARGEN), Php12,665, Region IVB - Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan (Mimaropa), Php13,295, Region II - Cagayan Valley, Php8,514 and Region I - Ilocos, Php8,030. Region V - Bicol, Php7,650, Region XIII - Caraga, Php7,579, Region VIII - Eastern Visayas, Php6,993 and lowest in the Autonomous Region of Northern Mindanao (ARMM), Php3,572. (PIA 10) [top]

Alegria Hills, following the Spanish word "Alegria" which means joy and merriment, is Ayala Land's first residential offering in Mindanao.

An exclusive residential community carrying the distinction of Ayala Land Premier, Alegria Hills is set amidst a prime location on a highland plateau of Cagayan de Oro that boasts of 360° view of the city, Macajalar Bay and the mountains.

Inspired by organic tropical achitecture, the masterplan provides scenic roads to traverse, canyon trails, ravine pocket parks and orchards to explore. There will be a clubhouse and other perks but at the center of all these shall be a chapel in a tree grove, an oasis of the community's shared dreams and values.

A mere 10 minutes away from Cagayan de Oro’s Limketkai Center and major business district, Alegria Hills offers a home high above the ordinary world that is secure, serene, nurturing and inspiring.

In previous months, the hotel was renamed to Paseo del Rio Business Hotel and Convention Center. According to the new tarpaulin, the name is being retained. The said name can be seen at the upper left corner of it. Palafox Associates and ESCA are still the architectural firm and engineering consultant respectively. Zealep Inc. (Pelaez spelled backwards) spear heads this project and will take Cagayan de Oro to a even higher level. Paseo del Rio is a 12 hectare property owned by the Pelaezes. This ambitious project is adjacent to the river. The river protection was finished a few months ago. Below are more pictures of the tarpaulin that can be seen in the PDR area.

A new tarpaulin was being installed at the Paseo del Rio property this morning, As one could notice, the convention center was not emphazied but fortunately the 15 storey hotel was.

Puerto Skyway operational in January 2011

By Nicole J. Managbanag

THE construction of the proposed 360-meter Skyway called the “Puerto-Sayre Fly Over” is expected to be finish in January 2011.

Estrella F. Sagaral, city planning and development coordinator-designate, said construction of the P386 million skyway will start within this month since the materials are already at the Tagoloan Container Port.

Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency

“Hopefully, the skyway, to rise above the Puerto Highway, would be completed in
January next year,” Sagaral said.

The construction will be spearheaded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Matiere, a French contractor. The project is solely funded by the National Government.

Sagaral said the flyover will start right after the overpass in Puerto and ends at the Puerto Medical Hospital heading straight toward the highway leading to Butuan City.

She said the skyway is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area.

With the construction of the proposed skyway, Sagaral said the City Government is asking for the people’s cooperation and understanding on the inconveniences that the construction would cause.

“It will only take a few months of hassle for the motorists but the benefit that we get from this project is forever,” Sagaral said.

Some updates of previously posted construction projects…. first is the large and long warehouse development by UKC Builders near Bulua Bus Terminal and Market Complex shown above.

Rumored to be an NFA Warehouse, this project is half-way done… perhaps consisting of two long warehouses with a space at the middle possibly and entry from the main road beside Jetti Refilling Station.

Month of August and some new projects in Cagayan de Oro City again….first is the renovation of this 3-storey building at the corner of Corrales Avenue and Hayes Street. This is now owned by Montecarlo Realty (UKC Builders). They’re working on the building’s facade and perhaps also on the inside.

More commercial spaces will be available once this building will be completed. Photos taken 2 weeks ago so expect more accomplishment by this time.

Another new construction is this small 2-storey development beside D’Sainte Bar…photo taken from DTI Bldg. Again, these were taken a few weeks back. There are now concrete posts and construction is now on the 2nd floor as of this time.

This 4-storey building below is just at the back of Win Grace Dormitory. Perhaps another dorm project. It can be accessed through Hayes Street near the marble works.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/img_4624.jpg?w=468&h=351

Have you heard about Juan Fuel? Well, they have one fuel refilling station operating along JR Borja Highway Extension and they’re constructing a 3-storey building behind it as shown below.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/img_4619.jpg?w=468&h=351

In Lapasan, there are now developments at the vacant lot owned by Liberty Land Corp. The property is along the highway (right side eastbound) some several meters after the pedestrian overpass. Things will get brighter in the next few days to see what this construction is.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/img_4622.jpg?w=468&h=351

There’s also some construction at the corner lot along Kauswagan Highway and bypass road near High Time Drive-In Motel. The area is small but perhaps good place for some night life. We’ll keep you updated on this.

PROJECT WATCH: City Legislative/Admin Bldg. latest updates (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/08/12/project-watch-city-legislativeadmin-bldg-latest-updates/#more-6227)

Work on the new City Legislative and Administration Building has now shifted to the facade and its interiors. As clearly shown above, the main entrance stairs are very much obvious at the lower right.

The building is still very much bare with lots of options on what to do with the exteriors. Will they place metal claddings? glass? Perhaps, construction suppliers may still have a say…or has City Hall already decided on it?

Based on the progress of construction, I see some partial relocation of some departments of city hall before the year ends. I think the discussion is more on the proper location of the different departments/sections of city hall which need to be relocated due to congestion and space limitations.

PROJECT WATCH: Golden Mile latest updates (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/08/12/project-watch-golden-mile-latest-updates/)
Posted on August 12, 2010 by damarre

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/img_4681.jpg?w=468&h=351

The Golden Mile project is still on-going. As seen in the pictures, the concrete river protection from the back of the city hall up to the area just behind the Chavez lot next to the amphitheater has been completed.

However, major earthfilling works are still needed shown below.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/img_4685.jpg?w=468&h=351

There are also changes perhaps as the north extension wall overlaps with the completed one.

This opening below is where trucks get some of their aggregates. Also, based on the perspective, this is right across the proposed river fountain.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/img_4684.jpg?w=468&h=351

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/golden-mile-copy.jpg?w=468&h=213&h=213

GMA-7 to open TV station in Oro

GMA Network is set to open its regional television station in Cagayan de Oro in September.

With an investment of around P20 million, Puentevella said they have already bought some equipment for GMA's temporary operation in Cagayan de Oro.

"But it will be completed before September," she said.

New city sanitary landfill to cost P300 Million (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/08/12/new-city-sanitary-landfill-to-cost-p300-million/)

TO SOLVE the rising problem of garbage in Cagayan de Oro City, the City Government will reportedly spend a whopping P300 million for the construction of a sophisticated sanitary landfill in Barangay Pagatpat.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/art17623widea.jpg?w=468&h=252

Alex Jimenez, chief of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Northern Mindanao’s Environmental Impact Assessment Monitoring Division, said the proposed landfill site is about 30 hectares.

“It is where the existing landfill at Sitio Zayas in Barangay Carmen will be transferred,” Jimenez said.

He added that the City Government in collaboration with the DENR has been drawing frameworks to realize what is said to be “an expensive project” under the administration of Mayor Vicente Y. Emano.

Jimenez said the budget for other social services of the City Government have to be sacrificed should the project be pursued.

The DENR is one of the members of an adhoc committee in the City Council created to look into the possibility of establishing not only an ordinary dumpsite but a sanitary landfill in particular, which is now under study.

Sanitary landfills are sites where waste is isolated from the environment until it is considered safe when it has completely degraded biologically, chemically and physically.

According to experts, there are four minimum basic conditions that should be met by any site design and operation before it can be regarded as a sanitary landfill. One is full or partial hydrogeological isolation; second is that the formal engineering preparations must be adapted on designs that should be developed from local geological and hydrogeological investigations; third, it should have trained staff to permanently control the operation, the depositing of waste and the regular operation and maintenance; and fourth, the waste should be spread in layers and compacted.

But Jimenez said before construction of the landfill would start, roads going to the area should first be established.

“Personally, I suggest putting up a garbage disposal site at the nearby urban areas to at least save out from less travels on garbage collections.

Pagatpat proper is also a likely place for a growth area.. hindi ba masasayang if occupied only by a proposed 30 hectares sanitary landfill? well, kung sa mga tumoy and sloped nga area lang ok ra IMO

GMA-7 to open TV station in Oro

GMA Network is set to open its regional television station in Cagayan de Oro in September.

Mariles Puentevella, GMA Network consultant for Mindanao and the station manager of GMA Davao, said they are now in the thick of preparation and has already opened a temporary office at the second floor of Hotel Conchita in Cogon.

Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency

With an investment of around P20 million, Puentevella said they have already bought some equipment for GMA's temporary operation in Cagayan de Oro.

"But it will be completed before September," she said.

She said they are now in the process of training their staff and reporters in Davao City and are eyeing to acquire a much bigger space for the station.

"We are also upgrading our system and equipment. Dapat sana matagal na kaming nag launch but was put on hold due to the election," she said.

She added they would launch their first show in September.

On Tuesday, GMA Network signed a memorandum of agreement with Promote CDO Foundation Inc. for the coverage of the different activities lined up for Cagayan de Oro's fiesta celebration on August 28.

Puentevella said the GMA coverage is aimed at promoting Cagayan de Oro at the same time provide entertainment to Kagay-anons.

"For the last three years, GMA has been very consistent in covering the Kagay-an Festival. Every year, we look forward to this activity as we also want to share the beauty of Cagayan de Oro," she said.

Last year, Puentevella said they invested P5 million for the lights and other materials needed for the live coverage of the 2009 Kagay-an Festival.

On August 27, GMA will hold its Kapuso Night at SM City, starting at 6:00 p.m.

Puentevella said they would also have a live coverage of the Golden Float Parade and Kapuso Mall Show at SM City featuring Party Pilipinas.

"This will be a big event as GMA will be bringing world-class artists," she said. (NJM)

Group mulls cable car system in CDO (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/08/13/group-mulls-cable-car-system-in-cdo/)
Posted on August 13, 2010 by damarre

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/sentosa_singapore_cable_cars.jpg?w=468&h=311

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Emano announced that a joint business venture between local businessmen and American investors is being set up for the construction of a proposed cable car system in Cagayan de Oro City.

Accordngly, the Mayor said that the American experts and local proponents will meet with him next week to discuss the details of the proposal.

The ‘starting point’ of the proposed cable car system will probably descend from Cagayan de Oro River’s upstream- the site of the famous whitewater rafting adventure, and ends up at the back of City Hall as its ‘disembarkment point’, according to Mayor Emano.

To enable to gain higher elevation before descending, a 20-storey high launching tower equipped with elevator would be established at the starting area, including the presence of popular food chain giants like Mc Donald’s, Jollibee, gift and novelty shops to cater to would-be passengers and tourists alike, he added.

With the majestic Cagayan de Oro River as its route going downstream, the cable car system, which is capable to operate during daytime and nighttime, would probably be the first of its kind in the country.

The project is patterned after the cable car system in Singapore (Sentosa) shown above.

Mayor Emano is hopeful that the establishment of the proposed cable car system will boost the city’s tourism industry as it offers a unique level of experience, thrill and adventure. (City Information Office)

PROJECT WATCH: Golden Mile latest updates (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/08/12/project-watch-golden-mile-latest-updates/)
Posted on August 12, 2010 by damarre

Shown below, the river fountain is right next to the city hall straight down from Toribio Chavez Street.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/golden-mile-copy.jpg?w=468&h=213&h=213

The Golden Mile is not just a river tourism project but also an infrastructure development as measure against erosion and flooding.

Hopefully, this Golden Mile project will be completed soon.

Cable car system in CdeO? (http://www.businessweekmindanao.com/2010/08/cable-car-system-in-cdeo.html)

http://www.businessweekmindanao.com/content/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/cable-car.jpg

Just imagine this: riding onboard a cable car with your family or friends, and enjoying the panoramic view of the scenic Cagayan de Oro River, the vast Macabalan Bay and the bustling urban center of Cagayan de Oro City.

This may sound a wild imagination, but it is not a far fetched idea.

This developed after City Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Emano announced that a joint business venture between local businessmen and American investors is being set up for the construction of a proposed cable car system in Cagayan de Oro City.

“I was able to convince some businessmen to put it (cable car system) up and they agreed, to a point that they have contacted American experts who will come over to see me,” Mayor Emano revealed during his radio program yesterday.

In fact, the Mayor said that the American experts and local proponents will meet with him next week to discuss the details of the proposal.

Mayor Emano is hopeful that the establishment of the proposed cable car system will boost the city’s tourism industry as it offers a unique level of experience, thrill and adventure. (City information Office)

Promote CDO allocates P3-M for fiesta (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/promote-cdo-allocates-p3-m-fiesta)

Thursday, August 12, 2010

PROMOTE CDO Foundation Inc. is reportedly allocating P3 million for this year’s fiesta celebration dubbed “Kagay-an Festival” in honor of patron St. Augustine on August 28.

Ruben A. Vegafria, Promote CDO president, said this year’s budget is much lesser compared with last year’s P4 million.

Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency

“The amount gathered by Promote CDO has not even reached our quota since sponsors now are also tightening their budget due to the financial crisis,” Vegafria said.

Though with a much lesser budget compared last year, he said they would not sacrifice the “quality” of the celebration and will instead lessen on the “collateral or production cost and materials such as transportation and meals” to their volunteer staff.

In 2009, Vegafria said Promote CDO turned over P500,000 to the city treasury, which he said is a “very tangible benefit that will help the city with the collateral.”

Promote CDO Foundation Inc. has been the City Government’s partner in promoting Cagayan de Oro as an investment and tourism destination since 2007.

In February 2007, the City Council passed Ordinance 10514-2007, which granted Promote CDO Foundation Inc. the exclusive right to manage and operate the city’s fiesta celebration effective August 2007 without cost to the City Government.

Under the ordinance, 30 percent of the proceeds that Promote CDO would get from the celebration would be remitted to the city’s coffers.

Vegafria said Promote CDO handles the different events for the fiesta, which has really helped in “aiding financial matters.”

Before, he said the city spent around P6 million for the fiesta celebration “without income in return.”

This year, Vegafria said among the major core events lined up for the Kagay-an
Festival include the Higa-onon Dance Festival, Lambagohan Fluvial Parade,
Kahimunan Mindanao Island Fair, Festival of Rhythmic Dances, Golden Float
Parade, Miss Kagay-an 2010 and “Dagan sa Kagay-an.”

“Last year, we really had a collateral damage due to rumors of threat from terrorism. Participants from other regions really backed out and we really suffered the worst. But we also learned from our experience,” he said. (NJM)

When it comes to Internet at home, which one are you?

- You’ve long yearned for high-speed Internet at home but don’t want to spend on a full-blown monthly subscription.
- You’ve suffered through the days of dial-up and are tired of hunting high and low for a nearby Internet café or for prepaid Internet cards - that give you connections running at a snail’s pace.
- You’ve pleaded for broadband at home but have repeatedly been told by dozens of customer care personnel that their wired services don’t reach that far.

If you’re like thousands of net-hungry Pinoys, you probably fit any or all of the above descriptions. Your long-suffering search is over because Globe WiMax 4G, the first and largest WiMax network in the country, has just introduced the best thing to happen to at-home Internet service: Globe WiMax 4G Prepaid.

At last you can put your home on the digital map with the first and only prepaid WiMax broadband Internet service that’ll hook up your home in no time. Designed especially for at-home use, Globe WiMax 4G Prepaid is a wireless broadband service that’s perfect for those home Internet users who want a reliable, affordable high-speed connection that won’t break the bank.

Globe offers a selection of sleek, state-of-the-art WiMax 4G Prepaid modems for as low as P 2,900, and after that one-time purchase, you just need to reload regularly to keep up with your favorite online activities. All you need to do is plug the modem into an electrical socket, connect it to your PC and surf away. It takes minutes to set it up so you’ll be on the web in a flash.

And once you’re all hooked up, just load P 60 per day and you’ll get all-day surfing at speeds up to 512 kbps so you can post Facebook updates, send emails and Skype with faraway friends. Spend a rainy day uploading your summer vacation pics on Multiply or Flickr or recording your unforgettable adventures on a personal video blog that you can post on YouTube or Flippish.com. Research is a snap with the high-speed connection, and when you need a break from homework, you can get your game on playing Farmville with friends from all over the globe. Reloading your WiMax 4G Prepaid is also a breeze via Globe’s network of reloading channels including Autoload Max, Share-A-Load, GCASH, prepaid cards or even through your bank ATM or credit card.

Now if you’re a hardcore web user, you’d best choose the Globe WiMax 4G postpaid option which is designed to keep you surfing the night away for only P 795 a month. And if you’re a power user whose need for speed won’t be denied, try Globe’s DSL service which gives you 1mbps and 2mbps options, or the GPON service which delivers tremendous speeds that run the gamut from 10mbps to 100mbps.

As the country’s WiMAX pioneer, Globe WiMAX 4G has the largest nationwide network with over 100,000 customers in nearly 60 provinces across the Philippines, covering 365 cities, including Manila, Caloocan, Cainta, Antipolo, Taytay, Plaridel, Cabanatuan, Dasmarinas, Bacoor, Imus, Tanza, Calamba, Batangas City, Cebu City, Cagayan De Oro, and Zamboanga.

Globe’s head for broadband marketing Manny Escosa says “Our WiMax 4G Prepaid service is the easiest and most affordable way to get your home broadband-connected. It’s wireless so you can buy it right off the shelf, take it home, plug it in and start surfing. It’s prepaid, so there are no worries about monthly bills. And our WiMax service is 4G-ready and future-proof, so you’re guaranteed a high-speed internet connection you’ll be able to count on for as long as you need it.”

So if you’re shopping around for an Internet connection that’ll get your home online in no time at a price you can live with, Globe WiMax 4G Prepaid is the best buy for you.

Very promising.

^^But same strength or maybe more than the usual river protection imo. This is constructed with deep foundation thru pile driving while the usual dikes only built in stones and concrete with no deep foundation, some are sandbags only that are easily eroded.

The ‘starting point’ of the proposed cable car system will probably descend from Cagayan de Oro River’s upstream- the site of the famous whitewater rafting adventure, and ends up at the back of City Hall as its ‘disembarkment point’, according to Mayor Emano.

Minda-wide Organic Forum in CDO City (http://www.businessweekmindanao.com/2010/08/minda-wide-organic-forum-in-cdo-city.html)

As part of Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Proceso J. Alcala’s thrust to promote organic farming, a Mindanao-wide Vermi Forum will be held on August 17-18, 2010 at Philtown Hotel, Velez St., Cagayan de Oro City. It aims to institutionalize the organic sector industry in the Department of Agriculture pursuant to the provisions of Executive Order (EO) 481 now a Republic Act (RA) 10068 “An Act Providing for the Development and Promotion of Organic Agriculture in the Philippines and other Purposes”. Organic farming products and technologies will also be exhibited at the Provincial Capitol Grounds on August 16-20, 2010 in tandem with the Salo Tabo activity.

The objectives on which the forum will focus are in coming-up with Vermi Organic Network in Mindanao, and to provide venue in discussing further RA 10068. It also aims to update in the facilitation of vermi-related organic investment (products & marketing) and other organic farming technologies, and to unify efforts in partnership with National Government Agencies, Local Government Units, Agriculture and Fishery Councils, corporate institutions, Non-Government Organizations, Farmers’ Cooperatives, private individual enthusiasts and organic advocates. All these efforts will address toward the efficient implementation of RA 10068.

The event is private led initiated by the Regional Agriculture and Fishery Council 10 (RAFC 10) with Xavier University College of Agriculture Academe and supported by Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Unit 10 (DA-RFU 10) and other government agencies like Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM), National Agriculture and Fishery Council, Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Provincial Local Government of Misamis Oriental. Expected participants are about 300 multi-stakeholders coming from 6 regions involved/engaged in agriculture and fishery sectors.

Still on organic farming campaign, DA Sec. Alcala recently attended the Mindanao Regional Farmers’ Conference held in Malaybalay, Bukidnon. He emphasized that partnership with DA and other various organizations is very vital in the successful implementation of RA 10068 and that it ensures progress of the country’s agriculture industry. “Widespread practice of organic farming in the Philippines is the key in attaining sustainable agriculture in the country”, he said.

Sec. Alcala, a known organic advocate, also said that “with organic farming, my grandchildren as well as yours will have a vivid future, safe food, and clean environment.” He calls for a strong and unified effort in the thrust of organic agriculture.(MannyKerwinV.Martinez, DA-RFU RAFID10)

CdeO emerging as a top tourist-business destination
Posted on August 16, 2010 by damarre

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5757/799106448513dc280afeu8.jpg

Cagayan de Oro has been cited lately as among the perfect destinations where travelers can mix business with pleasure, relaxation and adventure. Specifically, Region 10′s economic center was chosen not only as gateway to northern part of Mindanao but also due to its city-based adventure activities.

The city’s whitewater rafting adventures, and other outdoor activities are just a few mnutes from the city proper. Basically it’s where business and pleasure mix.

“These places are perfect for corporate travelers and holidaymakers,” says Cesar Cruz, Philippine Tourism Authority president. “Each place has something unique to offer, and we’re hoping that more and more people understand the fact that the Philippines has what it takes to be one of the world’s premier travel destinations.”

Aside from Cagayan de Oro, also named emerging destinations are: Laoag and Dagupan (Region I), for their heritage sites, and beaches; La Trinidad Valley Cordillera Administration Region (CAR), for its magnificent strawberry fields, vegetable terraces and cut flower industry; Zambales (Region III), a multifaceted destination for beach holidays, mango agri-tourism and sports adventure activities; San Juan, Batangas (Region IV-A) can easily boast endless beautiful beaches and stylized type of resorts; Marinduque (Region IV-B) with its world class resort and rich cultural traditions; Sorsogon of Bicol (Region V) which is synonymous to eco-tourism activities like whale interaction and firefly tour.

In Visayas: Silay City in Negros Occidental (Region VI), for its preserved ancestral houses, rich culinary heritage and newly constructed world class airport; Danao in Bohol (Region VII), the new eco-adventure mecca complemented by nearby white sand beaches and the nature’s wonders of the Chocolate Hills and tarsier; the island destinations of Northern Samar (Region VIII) with its pristine beach areas, rich flora and fauna and iconic natural land formation.

Down south: The Island Garden City of Samal (Region XI), for its paradise-like coves and beaches, eco-adventure sites and activities; Butuan City (Region XIII) of Caraga is historical mecca of the Philippines with good access to Agusan marshlands and surfing capital of Siargao; Sarangani (Region XII) can always pull a surprise with its beautiful coastlines, diverse cultural heritage and aqua tourism activities; Dapitan City (Region IX) of Zamboanga del Sur, holds one of the historical treasures of Dr. Jose Rizal, complemented by its rustic surroundings and thriving aqua culture industry.

The criteria used by the Department of Tourism and PHILTOA for choosing the Top Emerging Business Destinations are: good accessibility, communication network , availability of meeting facilities and standard accommodations.

The destinations will be featured at the 21st Philippine Travel Mart on September 3 to 5 at the SM Megatrade Halls, as part of the Biyahe Exchange Program, a one-on-one business meeting between corporate buyers and travel sellers where travel adventures, trips, and tours are offered to companies for corporate outings and company incentives.

Cagayan de Oro landfill set to rise (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/272651/cagayan-de-oro-landfill-set-rise)

By MIKE U. CRISMUNDOAugust 16, 2010, 4:54pmCAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The city government in this Northern Mindanao frontier and capital city is considering a budget of P300 million for the construction of a sophisticated sanitary landfill, it was learned Monday.

Said plan to construct a sanitary landfill came about out in an effort to solve the rising problem of garbage disposal in this fast-growing and progressive city in the region.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Northern Mindanao is now assisting the city government in constructing said sanitary landfill located at Barangay Pagatpat in this city.

Alex Jimenez, Chief of DENR’s Mindanao's Environmental Impact Assessment Monitoring Division, said the area size of the proposed landfill site is about 30 hectares.

Currently, the existing landfill is located at Sitio Zayas in Barangay Carmen, also this city.

Technical personnel with the city government along with the DENR’s assistance are fast-tracking the preparation of a framework for starting the project by either yearend or early next year.

Monday, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano ordered the city’s environment officials to closely coordinate with the DENR in implementing said project.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that there there is a possibility that budgetary allotments for the city’s other social services might be lessened to fund the implementation of said sanitary landfill project.

Cagayan de Oro to construct P300-M sanitary landfill (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=2&rid=294846)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Aug. 16 (PNA)-– In an effort to solve the rising garbage problem in this fast-growing and progressive city of Northern Mindanao, the city government of Cagayan de Oro is set to build a sophisticated P300 million sanitary landfill.

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano on Monday ordered the city’s environment officials and technical experts to closely coordinate with the DENR for finalization of the project which is set to commence before the end of the year or early next year. .

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Northern Mindanao is currently assisting the city government for the construction of the sanitary landfill to be located at Barangay Pagatpat.

Alex Jimenez, chief of the DENR’s Environmental Impact Assessment Monitoring Division in Mindanao, said the proposed landfill site is about 30 hectares.

An existing smaller landfill is located at Sitio Zayas in Barangay Carmen.

The DENR is closely coordinating with the city government to make sure that the proposed sanitary landfill is environment-friendly.

Sanitary landfills are sites where waste is isolated from the environment until it has completely degraded biologically, chemically and physically and considered safe.

According to experts, there are four minimum basic conditions that should be met by any site design and operation before it can be regarded as a sanitary landfill.

One is full or partial hydro-geological isolation; second is that the formal engineering preparations must be adapted on designs that should be developed from local geological and hydro-geological investigations; third, it should have a trained staff to permanently control the operation, the depositing of waste and the regular operation and maintenance; and fourth, the waste should be spread in layers and compacted.

The DENR had also proposed to the council that before construction of the sanitary landfill, roads going to the Pagatpat area should first be constructed.

“I give my full support to this project because it will be good to our city, our people and to our environment,” Mayor Emano said. (PNA)

Floating restaurant to rise at Oro River

By Nicole J. Managbanag

AS Cagayanons love to dine out, a businessman is planning to construct a floating restaurant along the Cagayan de Oro River.

Vice Mayor Ian Acenas, chair of the City Council's Committee on Tourism, said entrepreneur Frumencio A. Lao has submitted a request to operate a floating fine dining restaurant.

Acenas said the floating restaurant would boast two stationary components with three level structures on top of a Catamaran-type boat to be located in front of City Hall.

Based on Lao's request, the floating restaurant can accommodate about 400 dine-in customers.

Acenas said Lao is also planning to operate a motorized floating restaurant with a Catamaran design, which will cruise the Cagayan River.

He said the restaurant can accommodate about 50 dine-in customers and will have stopover zones in Barangay 6, Toribio Chaves Sts., Macanhan in Barangay Carmen, Zone 4 Pasil in Kauswagan, Punta Bonbon, and Punta Macabalan with customers giving not only delectable food but a complete view of the river.

In his request, Lao said the floating restaurant will surely make a new tourist attraction in the city with its "design, ambiance, quality of service, array of unique mouth watering native and foreign menu as its outmost priority."

Lao said part of the business proposal is to help clean the Cagayan de Oro River.

In reviewing the proposal, Acenas said Lao must make sure that the floating restaurant must be very durable to prevent any untoward incident during heavy rains or flood.

"The City Government welcomes this new attraction to our city and is in favor of the proposed restaurant. We are extending our full support to this project as this will give a boost to our city," Acenas said.

He added the project would help generate local employment in the city and provide a boost to the tourism industry.

i really don't know what's the story behind Golden Bell shutting down their branch at Capistrano... Dili ko mo-too nga tungod kay mingaw na lugar. It's a major thoroughfare with several establishments - from restos to banks to service center and tailoring/dress shops...yhriving in that area. Didto gani ga-grocery akong auntie pang tinda2x... there must be management-related issue the reason for its closure. Inig open na sa SM SAvemore at Capistrano, i will be one of the happiest consumers in CdeO cos this will be a few meter away from where I live - i can save both money and time.

NEW products will be launched during the Kahimunan Regional Trade Fair 2010 on August 23 to 29 at the Rotunda of Limketkai Center.

According to Regional Director Alicia Euseña, regional director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Northern Mindanao, new designs of “bayong” will be highlighted during the fair.

“Bayong” is a Filipino term referring to bags made of indigenous materials such as abaca fibers.

The new products include shopping bags, tote bags, wine bags and many more.

“The launching of these products is also part of the Project Bayong, a flagship project prioritized by DTI Regional Operations Group since 2009, to address the nation’s poverty and environmental problems. Aside from bayong, we will also showcase during the Kahimunan 2010 other products such as organic and natural products, fashion accessories, furniture, gifts and housewares, processed food and one-town one-product (Otop), Halal and SME products made in the region,” Euseña said.

The Kahimunan Regional Trade Fair is an annual marketing event designed to promote the region’s micro small and medium enterprises (MSME) products and to access new markets.

Component activities of the fair include Otop and Halal exhibits and business matching or one-on-one consultation with institutional buyers.

During the consultation, buyers will brief the sellers of their product requirements such as packaging, product design and production capacity.

Kahimunan 2010, one of the major activities of the city’s fiesta celebration, is organized by the DTI in partnership with PhilExport office and Promote CDO Foundation Inc.

As shown above, the admin building, social hall, function rooms, the main clubhouse and perimeter landscaping are all in the final stages of construction. I think at the end of this week, the facility may be ready for inauguration. [photo from Cebu Realty]

Also, Blocks 1, 5 and 8 of Phase 1 are all sold out. Only 2 lots are left available for Block 9. More lots are available for Blocks 2, 3 and 6. The clubhouse is shown south of the residential lots but on higher ground.

Tablon health center to be upgraded

THE health center of Barangay Tablon will soon be upgraded into a 25-bed primary hospital and basic emergency obstetric care (BemOC) center.

The decision came after Cagayan de Oro second district Representative Rufus Rodriguez and Abante Mindanao (Abamin) party-list Representative Maximo Rodriguez passed House Bill (HB) 0252, which seeks to upgrade Tablon health center.

The city's second district, Rodriguez said, is lacking with hospitals that can provide sufficient and effective medical attention to people belonging to lower bracket of society.

"This will be a big help to the people of the second district especially those in the hinterland barangays," Rodriguez told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro by phone.

Under HB 0252, BEmOC center will be under the direct supervision of the NMMC and Department of Health (DOH)-Northern Mindanao, citing DOH shall promulgate the necessary rules and regulations for the effective implementation of this Act.

The bill gets support from City Councilor Dante Pajo, chair of the City Council's committee on health.

"I understand that the thrust of our congressmen is to implement health programs particularly in upgrading the barangay health centers into a mini-hospital, it's a good purpose," Pajo told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Pajo added he is also expecting Cagayan de Oro first district Representative Benjamin Benaldo to duplicate this project in the first district.

Benaldo earlier promised to implement health projects as one of his platforms during his campaign in the last May 10 polls.

"Nakauna lang si Congressman Rodriguez but I hope Congressman Benaldo will also fulfill his promise," Pajo said. :)

The Oroport Cargohandling Services announces its new services offered at the International Port of Cagayan de Oro in Macabalan.

According to Oroport president Franklin Uy Siao, their facilities have been upgraded to cater to the rising needs of shippers using the port of Cagayan de Oro.

These facilities, he said, include a modern cold storage area with new equipment that can handle huge volumes of fresh fruits and other produce.

Oroport’s services include a weighbridge, refrigerated stacking area and fertilizer bagging.

Siao said these are in addition to the existing arrastre and stevedoring services. He said the Oroport has noted an increase in the use of port services that is why they have also increased the capacity of their facilities.

The facilities can also handle bulk bagging operations, stuffing and stripping, hauling and trucking, lift -up and lift -off, warehousing and other port-related services.

Container terminal operations continue to be serviced by Oroport as well as stacking and piling. All departments of Oroport can now be reached through phone numbers.

PPA opens to investors Castilla seaport, nine other Bicol ports (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=3&rid=296211)
By Danny O. Calleja

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CASTILLA, Sorogon, Aug. 23 (PNA)-– The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has opened to investors the Castilla All-Weather Seaport (CAWS) here and nine other Roll-on, Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ports in Bicol identified as potential commercial hubs to prop-up the central and eastern seaboards of the Philippine Archipelago.

The nine other ports are in Barangay Pantao, Libon, Albay; Aroroy, Cataingan, Cawayan, Claveria, Dimasalang, Esperanza and San Pascual towns, in Masbate province; and Caramoan in Camarines Sur.

All these 10 ports were either partially or totally built out of the corporate funds of the PPA in the total amount of P833.79 million under the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) program of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) to harbor maiden and regular voyages of commercial passenger and cargo vessels.

The PPA last year put up P17.5 million for the improvement of the CAWS into a modern international marine transport facility and the works were completed early this year involved the construction of a 39-meter that is now serving as an extension of the existing wharf.

The construction of the initial 60-meter wharf was initiated by the Castilla town government for P6 million derived from savings during the incumbency of Mayor Renato Laurinaria about five years ago.

This seaport was envisioned by Laurinaria to serve as gateway to future international transshipment being the only all-weather seaport in the country that would also be a boon to eco-tourism in the region, a funnel for investors and job opportunities and a dynamic commercial and industrial complex with countless profit centers.

He had also projected that later on, this project will serve as a major turn-around point in the country’s economic planning and recovery as it would serve as significant stimulant toward global competitiveness.

Presently, the marine transport industry of the region relies mainly on the seaports in the cities of Legazpi and Tabaco in Albay, according to Francisquiel Mancile, PPA’s regional manager for Bicol based in Legazpi City.

Unfortunaltely, these seaports failed miserably to support the regional reqiuirements as its antiquated facilities cannot measure up to weather disturbances that frequently visit the region, he said.

Even a weak typhoon, Mancila said could force marine vessels from Manila and Visayas islands to cease operations just to avoid the treacherous routes of San Bernardino Straits and Pacific Ocean. This usually deprives Bicolanos of their much-needed commodities and supplies.

Thus, CAWS became necessary to pursue Bicol’s economic development and it is under this rationale that it was put in place, he said.

It is located within a 10-hectare site acquired by the municipal government in barangay Poblacion, Castilla. The site lies at a deep cove along the western coastline of Sorsogon Bay 23 kilometers from Sorsogon City, the provincial capital and 35 kilometers from Legazpi City, the regional center of Bicol.

The newly completed improvement project ended at a section of the port site with a depth of six fathoms, a requirement for a docking facility to accommodate both domestic and international cargo and passenger vessels, Mancile added.

The Pantaon Port located at the western coast of Albay province and around 40 kilometers from the national highway on the other hand is intended to open a vital link to the maritime commerce in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Started in late 1990s, the initial stage of its construction that ate up around P220 million in DOTC fund was completed in 2005 but soon after its inauguration by erstwhile Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the structure was crumpled like a chicharron by super typhoon Reming in September 2006.

Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said that the PPA, realizing that Pantao Port is part of the country’s economic modernization program had committed way back in 2006 a P100-million fund for the phase I of its rehabilitation. However, the release of the fund was yet to be realized as of today.

The governor said the port must be upgraded so that the structure could withstand 244 kph winds not just the 176 kph as originally designed.

Under the supervision of the PPA, the construction and upgrading of the San Pascual Ro-Ro Port for the amount of P46.3 million in San Pascual, Masbate was completed last year, PPA regional manager Francisquiel Mancile said on Monday.

Strategically-located at a Burias Island town bordered by Camarines Sur in the north, Albay in the east, Bundok Peninsula of Quezon Province in the northwest, Sibuyan Island of Romblon in the west and Ticao Island in the south, the facility was conceptualized as a “bridge between Luzon and the Visayas”, according to Mancile.

The new port can accommodate bigger cargo and passenger vessels passing through routes to and from Quezon, Masbate, Romblon, Cebu and Davao.

The upgraded port facilities include a 9-meter x 11-meter RoRo ramp, 6m x 7m trestle deck and two sets of nine-pile breasting dolphin. The port also is a safe docking port for cargo vessels during tropical storms.

With this port's strategic position, mancile said trade and commerce in and around the province will be significantly enhanced, with the benefits seen to trickle down directly to the municipality and its people.

It opens bigger trade market for the island town as its people can now easily bring products to Camarines Sur, Quezon, Romblon, Cebu, General Santos in Davao and some other provinces in Visayas and Mindanao, he said.

It was also designed to boost local tourism as San Pascual has numerous tourist spots like Sumbrero Island and Tinalisayan Island which are inhabited by green sea turtle or pawikans, Mancile added.

The Aroroy, Cawayan, Cataingan, Cawayan, Claveria, Dimasalang and Esperanza ports are old secondary harbors that were upgraded by the PPA to suit Ro-Ro operations based on the standards of the SRNH program.

Mancile said the opening of these government-developed and supervised seaports to investors that have signified intentions to invest in the commercialization of its operations was formalized during the SRNH Investors’ Forum held in the same city last August 18.

"Definitely, they will serve as intermediaries of inter-island ad international trading," he said.

He also noted that these ports will also serve as potential tourism destinations with emphasis to some very significant but untapped or unfamiliar historical landmarks; provide the host towns the needed access to larger markets ad future identification of bigger agribusiness ventures that will boost the local economy.

With the features already established in most of these ports, the PPA looks forward to moving people and goods through a seamless and integrated transport infrastructure system to link the country's many islands as envisioned by the SRNH, Mancile said.

The SRNH is a highway through the sea using the Ro-Ro ferry terminals and vessels to link two or more islands. It involves not only ports and shipping lines but also road transportation as well.

Mancile said, SRNH also links the food baskets of Mindanao with the rich consumer markets of Luzon which ultimately lessens the costs of handling and stevedoring of produce since commodities get to the market early. This reduction in transporting commodities redounds to cheaper prices of goods.

To support the SRNH, the PPA and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) encouraged shipping operators and investors to provide shipping services in the Nautical Highway.

The Nautical Highway is 919-kilometer integrated set of highway segments and vehicular ferry routes which, considered in combination with other road and ferry routes not formally part of the SRNH, forms the backbone of a nationwide vehicle-accessible transport system. It covers 17 cities, towns and islands within the archipelago.

This system reduces the usual travel time by 17 hours to the different key cities, enhances the accessibility of the prime tourist destinations and minimizes the handling expenses of goods, all over the country.

A DOTC statement posted on its web site said that as of September 2009, nine shipping companies with a total of 28 vessels were operating in the highway. Four companies invested in the Western section of the country with 18 vessels, three in the Central with three vessels and two in the Eastern with two vessels.

The Western Nautical Highway includes the routes between Batangas City to Calapan, Oriental Mindoro; Roxas Oriental Mindoro to Caticlan, Aklan; Dumangas, Iloilo to Bacolod, Negros Occidental and Dumaguete, Negros Oriental to Dapitan, Zamboanga.

Central Nautical Highway consists of the routes Pilar, Sorsogon to Aroroy, Masbate; Cawayan, Masbate to Bogo, Cebu; Cebu City to Tubigon, Bohol; Jagna, Bohol to Balbagon, Mambajao, Camiguin and Benoni; and Mahinog, Camiguin to Balingoan, Misamis Oriental.

The Eastern Nautical Highway include Bulan, Sorsogon to Masbate City; Cataingan, Masbate to Naval, Biliran; and Benit, San Ricardo, Southern Leyte to Surigao City.

The SRNH also caters to the needs of the Ro-Ro Food Highway composed of three essential components--the main nautical highway from Manila to Dapitan/Dipolog/Iligan; the “grains highway” from Cagayan de Oro to Batangas that involves the use of bulk-handling ships and facilities in transporting grains, principally corn.

The Cagayan de Oro-Dumaguete-Batangas-Manila “long haul route” connects to the main highway. This new route involves the use of super ferries with roll-on, roll-off cargo facilities that can transport other agricultural and fishery commodities from Mindanao to Luzon.

Travelers from Mindanao can take advantage of a shorter traveling option by land from Davao and General Santos Cities to Cagayan de Oro cutting the usual traveling time by half, from 12 hours to only 6 hours and taking the long haul route all the way to Luzon via Cagayan de Oro-Batangas RoRo, the DOTC said.

Based on an annualized data, PPA is expected to realize a total revenue of P6.8 billion from these facilities. As of September 2009, PPA completed 14 projects out of the 35 total projects it handled. (PNA)

Acenas Welcomes Proposal For Floating Resto (http://www.cagayandeoro.gov.ph/?page=news&id=1877)

2010-08-19
by Eileen Josephine L. Borja/city Council Office

THE City Council committee on tourism chaired by Vice Mayor Caesar Ian Acenas last week favorably endorsed to the committee on laws and rules the proposal of an investor to operate a Fine Dining Floating Restaurant along the Cagayan de Oro River.

“We welcome this new attraction to our city as it will generate local employment. Samtang pabor ug suportado namo ang maong negosyo, angayan usab iseguro nga ampingan ang suba batok sa mga sagbot ug basura gikan sa floating restaurant,” the vice mayor said. The proponent informed the committee that the proposed floating restaurant will have two components. One will be a stationary 3 level structure on top of a Catamaran type boat with a capacity of around 400 customers and the other will be a motorized unit, also of Catamaran design with a capacity of more or less 50 cutomers which will cruise the river along its navigable waters up to the Macajalar Bay.Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Acenas urged all travel and tours agencies in the city to maximize efforts to promote the city even as he commended the Cagayan de Oro Travel and Tours Association (COTTA) for its continuing support to the city’s tourism industry. “This is our city, let us continue our partnership,” he said. Old Limketkai Bldg. soon to be SM SaveMore

The old Limketkai Building along Capistrano Street, which was originally the Kairo Super Cinema and later Golden Bell Grand Center before it closed shop, will soon become another branch of SM SaveMore, SM Group’s stand-alone supermarket chain. This was revealed by Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano during his weekly radio program recently.

I have known this for a few months back but negotiations were still ongoing back then….until Mayor Emano made the announcement. This would be the second SaveMore branch in the city after Market City (SaveMore Agora). Still, no official press release from both parties but accordingly, this is a done deal already.

Golden Bell’s Cagayan de Oro branch (shown above) was its largest in Mindanao. But somehow, customers might have ran out of patience for the 4-level commercial establishment as the management offered no innovations, special promos, or even any gimmicks to draw the crowds back as most people will either go to the public markets, Gaisano, Ororama, Limketkai and even SM. Hopefully, the SM brand will relive the building’s glory days when it was then called Kairo (from limketKAI – ROsario) Super Cinema, the city’s largest theater way back in the 1980s.

In the advent of Cagayan de Oro City Fiesta, more popularly known as Kagay-an Festival, the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro offers a Novena to Saint Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine. Saint Augustine is the Patron Saint of Cagayan de Oro.

Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral recently underwent a renovation and repainting in preparation for the Kagay-an Festival 2010. A celebration shared not only by Christians, but also of the Lumad and the Muslim brothers of Kagay-anons, as they all play a great part in the colorful history of Cagayan de Oro.
