Kids excited with 1st McDonald's in Iligan

CHILDREN in Iligan City only knew McDonald's on TV.

After months of waiting, they finally satisfied their desire to taste McDonald's all-time favorite treats as the food chain opened its first outlet in the city on Saturday.

"We'll be coming back again, and again, and again," declared Don Mark Legaspi, 12, a sixth grader from Iligan City Central School.

Don Mark and his brother Dale, 6, a first grader from the same school, patiently followed and waited in line to the counter at noon on opening day with their mother Venus and aunt Maricel.

"They have been very curious about McDonald's. They got excited that McDonald's would finally come (to our city)," said their mother.

While Venus and Maricel had once eaten at McDonald's during a quick land trip to Cagayan de Oro City, the capital of Northern Mindanao some 85 kilometers northeast from here, they said it was meaningful for them to line up with the children.

"It's the first day. It's meaningful for us, especially the kids," said Maricel. "It's worth lining up, naa ang thrilling (there's a thrill)," added Venus.

Asked what he could say about the first Burger McDo he ate and while savoring his first McFlurry, the shy younger sibling almost whispered "lami" (delicious) and smiled.

McDonald's opened on July 26 its first restaurant in this city, serving Iliganons at the main entrance of the yet to be completed New Gaisano Mall along the national highway.

It is near the Cathedral and chancery of the Diocese of Iligan.

With the family of the franchise owner-operator, McDonald's treated on Friday night the VIPs from the city government led by Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz and Vice Mayor Henry Dy, the province of Lanao del Norte and the local business community during the traditional Good Neighbors Night that immediately followed the inauguration of the new store.

"It was bongga! There were plenty of people and the activities were well-organized," noted Nora Soriño, Iligan bureau chief of Mindanao Goldstar Daily, a newspaper based in Cagayan de Oro City.

"Congratulations and welcome to Iligan," quipped Gorgonio Loable, editor of Iligan-based weekly Mindanao Scoop.

Like the Legaspi siblings, other children similarly braved the lines to the counter and eventually relished the unique and satisfying array of food McDonald's offers.

Mark, 12, a sixth grader from Mary Infant Grade School, and his younger sister Precious, 7, a second grader, patiently waited in line, excited of the thought that they would be the first among their classmates to savor the popular Chicken McDo and McSpaghetti Happy Meal.

"They were so excited, and very insistent that we should come early this (Saturday) morning, and we had to commute about 12 kilometers from home," shared their mother whose family lives in Linamon town, this city's western gateway from Lanao del Norte. "I'm glad they're happy. You could see them enjoying their meals."

Alex Palo, 36, a Muslim who works at this city's port, went home early to his hometown in Boloi, about 18 kilometers southwest from here, to bring to McDonald's his young wife, 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son. "It's meaningful for us to be here in McDonald's together for the first time on McDonald's first day," he said.

"And the food here is certified Halal (permissible according to Islamic law)," he added.

Global Steel plans $ 1.6-B expansion

Global Steel Philippines (GSP), the country’s largest steel maker-exporter, eyes substantial coal and iron reserves as it positions for a $ 1.6 billion expansion that will triple its plant capacity from 1.2 million metric tons (MT) to 3.6 million.

GSP, formerly state-owned National Steel Corp., is in talks with various groups for an integration of raw material supply sourcing from its present steel-making business.

"We will have 3.6 million tons once we’re able to put up an integrated steel operation. But we’re still planning it. We’re looking for all opportunities," said Sangram Mohanty, GSP vice president for corporate communications, in an interview at a mining forum.

GSP is hoping to displace huge importation of raw materials for the steel plant in order to save on cost and enable the Philippines to become more globally competitive. The country, Mohanty said, imports all of its 70,000 MT raw material steel plate for manufacturing a steel product meant to be used for making cranes and other industrial equipment.

It is expanding in order to meet growing markets.

"There’s a shipping industry that’s taking a boom in the Philippines," he said. "Iligan will be the steel capital of the Philippines once we’re able to do this."

The reported a gross revenue of $ 195 million in 2007, up by 27 percent from the previous year.

Despite planned expansion, GSP is concerned that the Philippines has not yet comprehensively mapped its iron and coal resources which are essential to a steel industry which in turn is critical to a country’s economic development.

Another concern is technical smuggling which is stripping Philippine government of a big potential income from missed taxes. The company is coordinating with the Bureau of Customers, Federation of Philippine Industries and Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry on this concern.

GSP is affiliated in some way with Arcelor Mittal, world’s largest steelmaker in terms of turnover and second largest in steel output as of 2004 with E30.2 billion, as Arcelor Mittal Chairman Laksmi Mittal is brother of the chairman of Global Steel.

The company is a supplier of flat steel products for the local market and other South East Asian countries. Its products include hot rolled coils, hot rolled plates, cold rolled coils, and tinplates. Hot rolled products have applications for pipe and tube makers, shipbuilding, general engineering, fabrication, and construction.

Cold rolled products have applications in automotive, white goods appliance, galvanizing, roofing, fabrication, and drumstock.

Tin products have application in oil and food cans like infant dietetics, milk cans, sanitary cans, crown and screw caps, batteries, decorative and other novelty items.

GSP is run by the Global Ispat Holdings Ltd., one of world’s pioneer in steel production, and has facilities in Bulgaria, Nigeria, India, Bosnia, Libya and Zimbabwe.

Hanjin ($2 Billion) + Mittal ($1.5 Billion) = $3.5 Billion investments or P140 Billion Pesos. This 2 projects will propel NorMin as one of the Industrial Hubs of the Philippines and SEA. Hopefully the Gov't does everything humanly possible to make them a reality.

Cagayan de Oro City (6 August) -- THE construction of the Laguindingan International Airport, one of the flagship projects of the Arroyo administration under the Mindanao Super Region program, is underway and targeted for completion by January 2012 based on the revised timetable set by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).

According to a DOTC-10 project status report, that as of July 31, this year, the main civil works that started January 2008 with a project cost of P4.991 billion is now 3.65% complete where mobilization activities at the site is currently undertaken by the Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC), a korean company.

The work includes the construction activities, construction of the Project Monitoring Office (PMO)/engineer's facilities and earthworks at airside and landside areas.

The acquisition of the access roads within the 24.11-hectare land had been completely acquired with a project cost of P32.719 million and the titling activities of the acquired properties are ongoing.

The construction of the access roads that started in July 2007 is now 48.9% complete. Its construction activities include embankment works, sub-grade preparation works, sub-base preparation works and drainage works.

Its detailed engineering and civil works procurement had been completed and the construction is scheduled to be fully accomplished by December 2008.

Also, the report stated that the civil works for the construction of the perimeter fence of the airport that was started in July, 2002 is 76.8% accomplished, but was temporarily suspended pending the acquisition of 94 hectares, the additional donation of the Ayala Corporation due to the non-completion of conversion of the affected properties from agricultural to commercial/industrial.

The main airport is situated in a 387.68-hectare land in Laguindingan town, west of Misamis Oriental and about 32 kilometers from the city of Cagayan de Oro and halfway towards Iligan City in Lanao del Norte.

Of the 387.68 hectares, a total of 289.97 hectares or 74.8% had been totally acquired, including the first donation from the Ayala Corporation.

The remaining lot to be acquired is still 94.39 hectares for additional donation by the Ayala and 3.32 hectares for acquisition from individual land owners other than the Ayala properties.

With this, a Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) between Ayala Corporation, Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and DOTC was signed on August 31, last year, which stipulated that Ayala will donate the 94.04 hectares after the approval of land use conversion in which DOTC acts as co-petitioner.

On July 15, 2008, the Land use conversion order was issued by DAR-central office.

The construction of the airport is based on international standards with a total project cost of P7.853 billion and is funded from a loan undertaken by the Philippine government with the government of Korea.

The total loan is payable in 20 years to be shouldered by the national government.

Once completed and operational by 2012, the Laguindingan airport is expected to cater to domestic flights and later to international flights, which will result to the closure of the more than 50 year-old Lumbia airport in Cagayan de Oro.

It will create employment, boost tourism and will accelerate and sustain the economic growth of the province, Northern Mindanao and entire island of Mindanao as a whole.

The presence of the airport will also boost the agri-business activity of the region as envisioned in the Mindanao Super Region strategy of the Arroyo administration. (PIA-10/MisOrOccCam)

Global Steel Philippines, Inc. has started production of steel plates with the recent commissioning of its plate mill in Iligan.

Interviewed at the sidelines of the three-day conference on Sustaining Mining Exploration and Investments at the Crown Plaza Galleria, company vice president for corporate communications Sangram Mohanty said Global Steel is targeting a production of 20,000 metric tons a month of steel plates, both for the domestic sector and for export to other Southeast Asian markets.

At the same time, Mohanty confirmed Global Steel’s continuing interest to invest in the local mining sector to complement its existing steel manufacturing activities.

He said “we are looking at all mines” and have not seriously sat down with any specific group. “We are not sure of the availability of iron ore because it has not really been mapped.”

Aside from Global Steel, a lot of other Indian investors have their sights set on the Philippines.

According to Dr. Ahmed S. Firoz, former chief economist of India’s Ministry of Steel, several Indian companies are looking for iron ore sources outside India.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose L. Atienza had previously told reporters that the Mittal Group, which controls Global Steel, may invest an additional P4 billion to P5 billion in the Philippines. The group has expressed interest to go into mining, specifically iron ore, to support its steel milling operation in Iligan and to fully integrate its existing steel manufacturing operation in the country.

The Mittal Group’s Ispat acquired the former National Steel Corp. (NSC) in 2004 then renamed it to Global Steel Philippines. — Marianne Go

It's just one of the big hospitals in CDeO. Probably the most modern hospital in NorMin nowadays is the Capitol University Medical City. It's 9 storeys at one point but this hospital is probably wider because it's design is sprawling w/ 5 storeys all throughout.

The Divine Mercy statue, so far the tallest Divine Mercy statue in the world, will be formally turned over to the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro represented by Archbishop Antonio Ledesma.

The occasion will also welcome the collaborating presence of the Marians of the Immaculate Concepction Fathers from Stockbridge, Mass to be the administrator and custodian of the statue and the Church of Mercy. There will be a Filipino priest counterpart since the Polish priests are still unable to speak Cebuano or Tagalog dialects.

Divine Mercy Hills is a project inspired by God. His presence is mysteriously felt in the place as miracles of healing and conversion are continuously experienced by many. Since its discovery and development in 2003, there is a steady rise of pilgrims from all over the country. The forthcoming event will usher in pilgrims and visitors from foreign shores like Poland, United States, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Preceding the celebration will be a three-day symposium, which will be held at the Coco Ridgeview Chapel.

The first day of the symposium will focus on the importance of the Eucharistic celebration, Marian topics will be discussed on the second day and Divine Mercy essentials will be explained on the third day.

Among the topics and speakers are as follows: Divine Mercy and the Holy Eucharist by Rev. Joe Roesch, The Eucharist and Social Justice by Rev. Florencio Salvador, Role of Mary in the Works of Divine Mercy (Mother of Mercy) by Roesch, Mary, True Model of Discipleship by Msgr. Even after their withdrawal last April this year, Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp. (HHIC) is still moving to obtain from the local environmental bureaus all the environmental permits it needs for the construction of their $2 billion shipyard facility at Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-10) Regional Director Maximo Dichoso, Jr. and the Department of Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Juanito Manzano, Jr. recently disclosed that Hanjin has sent representatives to their respective offices to request for more information on what HHIC needs to sdubmit to obtain all the permits.

Also, they told reporters that HHIC even recently submitted its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which is needed for the issuance of the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) for their shipyard facility at Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

Manzano said Hanjin even has the ECC needed for the construction of its administration building training hall and peripheral fence to be located at Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

"All that is needed is the ECC for their shipyard at Phividec (Industrial Estate) in Villanueva," he said in a press conference at Grabnd Caprice Restaurant.

Manzano said he ahs also received requests for information and technical assistance for the quarrying of some other local rivers to fulfill the material construction needs of the shipyard.

He explained that the Tagoloan River, the closest river to the shipyard location, cannot fulfill all the requirement needs for the construction of Hanjin's $2 billion shipyard in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

"So if you consider all of these developments, then there is a strong possibility that Hanjin will indeed come back," he said.

Foreign investors are not affected by the brewing tension between government forces and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

“There is no immediate effect,” Robert Sears, executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (Amcham) said in an interview.

According to Sears, foreign businessmen will continue to infuse money in the country especially since the Board of Investments (BOI) are improving services they give to existing and potential investors.

“We are happy with what the government is doing and we are looking forward to a continuing partnership between the foreign chambers and the government,” Sears said.

“We are confident that the government can handle the situation,” he added.

BOI managing head Elmer Hernandez said the attack in Lanao del Norte and nearby provinces is “not a problem.”

“Investments will continue to pour in even if there is civil unrest in the south,” Hernandez told The STAR in an interview.

According to Hernandez, the tension will only have an effect if it continues for a long time.

“We are not alone in this, other countries are also dealing with similar situations,” Hernandez pointed out, citing Thailand and Malaysia as examples.

He said foreigners usually factor in these kinds of things when they invest in a particular country.

“I don’t think we should be concerned just yet,” Hernandez said. “Although of course we are all hoping for the quick resolution of the matter.”

In fact, Hernandez said a big investor in Mindanao Korean firm Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp. will push through with its expansion plans.

Hernandez confirmed that the investment would continue, “I was talking to them a month ago and they told me that the project was a go,” he said.

Disagreements over an environmental permit have delayed the construction of a $2-billion shipyard in the southern Philippines.

The shipyard is being built on a 442-ha lot inside the Phividec Industrial Estate and is expected to be completed in 2017. It will have a capacity of 830,000 tons per year when completed, generating 45,000 new jobs.

Business as usual for tourism

As for the tourism industry, it’s business as usual as it remains unhampered by the prevailing peace and order problem in the south, said Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano yesterday.

Durano assured tourists that the conflict is isolated and has not affected the tourism industry.

“The country’s top destinations such as Manila, Boracay, Palawan, Davao, Bohol and Cebu remain safe for both international and local guests,” he stressed.

Durano noted that the military and police are on top of the Mindanao situation.

“Our regional offices keep in close coordination with foreign tourists in their areas and the private sectors have likewise informed us that there are no cancellations on their packaged tours.”

Durano also said commercial activities and public services even in areas surrounding the provinces of Lanao continue regular operations at this time.

“Operations of businesses including establishments in the tourism industry such as transportation services, hotels, resorts and restaurants continue to be normal,” he said.

THE Divine Mercy Foundation Mindanao (Phils.), Inc. together with the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro cordially invite everyone to a triple grand celebration this September 8, 2008 at the Divine Mercy Hills in PSB-Ulaliman, El Salvador City.

The highlights of the event will be the solemn dedication and blessing of the 50-foot Divine Mercy statue, the formal turnover of the statue to the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro and the birthday of our Blessed Mother Mary.

The event is the biggest celebration in the Divine Mercy Hills and could not have been more perfectly timed for the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro is commemorating its diamond jubillee year, too.

The Divine Mercy statue, so far the tallest Divine Mercy statue in the world, will be formally turned over to the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro represented by Archbishop Antonio Ledesma.

The occassion will also welcome the collaborating presence of the Marians of the Immaculate Concepction Fathers from Stockbridge, Mass. to be the administrator and custodian of the statue and the Church of Mercy. There will be a Filipino priest counterpart since the Polish priests are still unable to speak Cebuano or Tagalog dialects.

Divine Mercy Hills is a project inspired by God. His presence is mysteriously felt in the place as miracles of healing and conversion are continuously experienced by many. Since its discovery and development in 2003, there is a steady rise of pilgrims from all over the country. The forthcoming event will usher in pilgrims and visitors from foreign shores like Poland, United States, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Preceding the celebration will be a three-day symposium which will be held at the Coco Ridgeview Chapel.

The first day of the symposium will focus on the importance of the Eucharistic celebration, Marian topics will be discussed on the second day and Divine Mercy essentials will be explained on the third day.

Among the topics and speakers are as follows: Divine Mercy and the Holy Eucharist by Rev. Joe Roesch, The Eucharist and Social Justice by Rev. Florencio Salvador, Role of Mary in the Works of Divine Mercy (Mother of Mercy) by Roesch, Mary, True Model of Discipleship by Msgr. Rey Monsanto, Church's Guidelines on Marian Devotions by Salvador, The Life and Virtues of St. Faustina Kowalska by Rev. Seraphim Michalenko, The Essence and Urgency of the Divine Mercy Message by Michalenko and a personal testimony by Rev. Donald Callaway.

In between, there will be various musical presentations in honor of the Divine Mercy and the Blessed Virgin Mary by the five Divine Mercy ecclessiastical provinces of Mindanao.

The main celebrant of the September 8 mass will be Ledesma with Archbishop Emeritus Jesus Tuquib as con-celebrant. The homilist will be Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Quevedo.

Pueblo de oro says were building a township, I believe they are not just building a town but a city within the city..what makes it more interesting is that they are now making the uptown the next potential place for cdo's big thing.... Thanks to the developers who believe in the potential of cagayan de oro... to be one of the most ideal place to invest... I do hope that there will be more investors coming to bring good tidings not just to cdo but of northern mindanao

hindi talaga malayo na mag open sila dito coz i heard meron pa daw open spaces... let's jst wait until december na mag open na ang 3rd at saka 4th floors. Pero ang 3rd floor painted in white na yung ceiling although malapit sa atrium area hindi pa nalagyan ng covering yung ceiling...siguro ang 4th floor mga October-November pa yan.

ang 1st at second floor, nasa mga tenants na lang ata ang kulang kung kelan talaga mag start ang work sa mga stalls nila. Meron ding rason kung bakit matagal tagal natapos ang mall kasi simultaneous yung pag build ng mall in Pagadian City. Neopace din kasi ang may-ari dun gaya ng Gmall Super.

nope...sales should pick up now that the southwestern part of the South Diversion Road has just been completed (paved) last week. This leaves only about a kilometer stretch of the northeastern part of the South Diversion Road which connects to Camaman-an proper to be fully paved (4- lanes).

ganahan jud ko anang dining area na open air, and accesible pa without going inside the mall...nice. pero unta, ilang gi-extend gamay para murag veranda na open air ang dating (mall of asia style diay akong ginaisip)...meron din ganyang sa gMall davao pero hindi ganyan kalaki, Gerry's grill ang nag-occupy.

the divine mercy has become more popular even from the devotees in the western part of mindanao. in fact, a friend of mine from there said that a miracle happen when their sick neighbor was cured by the healing water from the divine mercy. i had a hard time believing her but that was her testimony and not mine.

Mukhang hindi nasunod ang master plan nitong mall. For example, the exterior wall is very different from the layout. The blue protrusions in-between billboards are no longer installed. There's also no provision for overpass. And worse, I heard that Bench and Jollibee have backed out from the deal. The mall closes at 7pm, an hour earlier when it was just opened. Seems everything is in backward direction. Calling on the Gaisano management!!! If you're lurking on this thread, hear us out. Malls do close late to give shoppers more time especially those who are working from 8am-6pm.

Gaisano probably did not employ marketing for this mall. It's such a waste considering that this is a billion peso investment.

Gaisano wake up! The people of Iligan were excited for your opening in the city because they thought you would set a trend. You would revolutionize the city's economy. You would tell the city dwellers that there are many exciting activities after office hours. You failed the people of Iligan. You're such a huge disappointment. Shame on you!!! Hope you'll do something about this. The people of Iligan have been clamoring for progress. They thought you were the answer to that clamor. There is little to no progress under a very limited trading hour. Extend the mall's shopping hours back to 8pm. Better yet, 9pm. In that way, you make the shoppers happy. Then the people will patronize you. That’s how business is done. It’s a two-way.

I think it's the city government who will build the overpass. With regards to the mall's operating hours, medyo relax ang Gaisano kasi wala pang competition. It will surely change when it matters.

That was exactly what I was thinking too, and it seems unfair for the consumers, in my opinion. This is the only mall in the whole UNIVERSE that closes at 7pm. It's a big joke!!! Gaisano Iligan is a big joke!!! Mahiya ka naman Gaisano!!! Kapal ng mukha mo parang gina-gago mo ang mga taga Iligan!!!

Call me cynical, but I'm not convinced security was be the problem here. There are several Policemen stationed at the mall at any given time. Budget yata yon ng local government, so that’s a huge favor for Gaisano. Aside from that, the mall is a haven for Muslim shoppers as well. If these Muslim terrorists would bomb the mall, they would kill a lot of their Muslim brothers/sisters as well, which I think they could not afford to do. But, regardless, the security can always be tightened by not closing the mall early. If the terrorists would really want to bomb the mall, they can bomb the mall any time of the day. Was there any mall bombing incident that took place in the evening? I don’t think so. I think the bombings in the past incidents happened in the morning, lunch time or afternoon.

It is clear to me that Gaisano Iligan is facing a problem of severe lack of marketing campaign. There's nobody from the company who was tasked to promote the mall or the stalls inside the mall. I even think that the negotiations between the mall and those potential stall occupants failed due to poor negotiating team of Gaisano, if it has one. Additionally, there was no one managing the mall. Look at the phase of construction; it's slowing day after day. Nobody was working on the 3rd floor. The exterior wall is far from finished. The painting at some parts of the mall has not even started yet. Nakakaawa tingnan ang mall ngayon. Nagmukhang walang budget. Nagmukhang nalulugi na si Gaisano!

Sana lang talaga bro ibalik nila sa date ang closing time ng mall at para sa ganun makakapag-shopping pa rin yung mga office workers. yan lang naman ang point ko. Masaya naman sa Iligan maski sa gabe. Hindi kaylangan magtago na tayo sa bahay natin pag alas siyete na kasi bobombahin na tayo ng mga terroristang mga Muslim. I think it's a wrong practice. We've got to change that notion somehow. Based on history, bombings took place in the afternoon or morning. Even the 9'11 bombing happened in the morning. (sana lang di nila mabasa ang post ko. baka magka idea sila. :lol: )
