SM RETAIL, Inc., the Sy-led unit in charge of supermarkets and department stores, plans to spend as much as P5 billion this year to grow its store network particularly into smaller neighborhoods, an official said.

“We will be expanding our stores this year. For SM Retail’s expansion, we intend to spend around P4 billion to P5 billion, almost the same from last year’s figure,” Corazon P. SM Retail plans to open a total of 37 new stores this year, or five department stores, six supermarkets, 21 SaveMore branches, and five hypermarkets according to SMIC’s latest financial statement.
This is higher than the 34 new stores that were opened last year, according to earlier reports.
Expansion will be funded by mix of internally-generated cash and debt.
“The department stores and supermarkets will open together with our new shopping malls, mostly outside Metro Manila, while our SaveMore stores will be in a mix of Metro Manila and provincial areas all over the country,” Ms. Guidote said.
