Matthias Offodile July 23rd, 2007, 12:52 PM I knew that there was a Freetown Gallery somewhere on SSC, it is no longer on the forum, at least I cannot find it, so here is a new one!:)

River No. 2 is a beach about thirty kilometers from the west side of Freetown. This is a very popular spot at weekends so if you want the place to yourself it is best to go during the week. Here you can either relax on the river or take a canoe up the river to the waterfall. River no. 2 spills out into the Atlantic at this picturesque beach in Sierra Leone. Small waves break around the sand wash-out from the river-mouth. The beach itself is beautiful and every time you go, it looks different.

She reckons about 20% are Christians. No stress, i know she didn't do much homework, she is probably just giving us a reflex response.

youza November 18th, 2008, 06:44 AM Wow, nice photos about Sierra Leone. I think it should be able to catch up with the nearby country of the Gambia very quickly in terms of tourism development . Given such a small land size and such a small number of people, compared to the population of most western and Asian nations, Sierra Leone has a lot of potential for fast improvement, in both infrastructure and democratic governance. I guess that it will catch up with other well-developed nations in Africa in about 10 years time.

Bear in mind that Sierra Leone started off well in the post-independent years of the 60´s and (early) 70´s..it attracted a good amount of European -mostly British - tourists to its beaches and had some great hotels and hang-out spots for that time...a distant memory are those "heydays" considering the recent past of this beautiful small country.....but let´s hope for the Best:)

Its still a very poor nation, but you have to consider what it has gone through. It was once a fairly prosperous place, and considering its wealth in diamonds and natural resources it can probably get back to that status soon enough. I think that there is plenty of potential especially in physical beauty...landscape, beaches, coastline, ecotourism etc.

popa1980 February 13th, 2010, 09:16 PM wow, some really nice beaches. I think Sierra Leone has huge potential for
tourism much like Ghana.
West Africa generally does not have that many great tourist attractions- Sierra Leone, Senegal and Ghana are the ones where I think tourism could be big. Sierra Leone and Senegal for the beaches. Ghana for its slave castles which are already a major diaspora draw. For the rest of the nations i dont see tourism being a big earner.
kenndo February 14th, 2010, 06:56 AM west africa has many tourist attractions.
youza February 16th, 2010, 01:15 PM Sierra Leone should be able to quickly catch up with the Gambia and become one of the major tourist attractions in English-speaking West Africa. What the government should do is to improve infrastructures to spur tourism growth. Sierra Leone has some of the most picturesque beaches in the region. However, political stability is of paramount importance in the government drive to spur tourism growth, and improve livelihood and welfare of the general public in the country.
ofongtere February 28th, 2010, 04:00 AM I totally disagree with that statement. I'm not sure where it came from and how reliable it is, but show me a country in Africa without witchcraft/voodoo. In today's world, witchcraft is even practiced in the western world. I shared this with my Kenyan and Zambian friends and even the Kenyans confirmed that they believe witchcraft is worse in Kenya than in Sierra Leone even though they have never been there. Beautiful country indeed. However, it's people are soooo steeped in witchcraft and voodoo it's not even funny. :ohno:

^^
So how did they compare the two? Its just like saying Nigeria has most cases of witchcraft based on Nollywood films. Better still, is there a ranking for witchcraft prevalence in Africa? (I'd love to see that one.)

BWAAAHAHAHAHAAA! Please don't make me laugh! I happen to work with three Sierra Leonian women. The stories I have heard? Oh my GOD! Talk about belief in witchcraft and superstition! One of the ladies is ALWAYS dreaming and telling me of her dreams and how they always come true! She even told me she dreamed what gender my first child would be! :ohno: She once battled what they call "marine spirits". She told me that during her circumcision ceremony they disclosed to her what her first child would be. She is superstitious and scared stiff of cats, snakes, owls, and bats. The other lady told me how her ex-husband made a juju pact that she would never leave him. She told me that whenever she travels to Sierra Leone she wears a wig or braids her hair cuz she's scared if she wears her real hair, someone could take her hair (the one that sheds during combing) and go juju her with it. The other lady told me that women in Sierra Leone use juju to get other women's men. Then when someone dies, there's something called a 40 day ceremony where you cook the deceased person's favorite food and set it out for them to come eat. And on and on and on! One of them recently lost their brother. She told me she believed it was juju that killed him! Then one of them has a sister who can't find employment - she believes her in-laws are busy juju-ing her to keep her from being successful! I have heard soooooooooooooooooo many juju stories from just these three ladies - more than I have EVER heard in my whole ENTIRE LIFE!
Now, I happen to know that juju and voodoo is more prominent in the west than in any other part of Africa. That's just a fact. I'll also tell you something else. Most tribes in Kenya were, traditionally, Monotheists. They believed in one God! In contrast, many West African religions were into animism and polytheism. That's why voodoo is big in Brazil and in places like Louisiana. I'll talk about Kenya, since that's where I come from. There are certain regions in Kenya where juju and superstion is rife. That region happens to be the Coastal region, but even then, it's mainly among the Mijikenda people, the Pokomo, and the Wataita. Further inland you will not find very many people into witchcraft and voodoo. You might find a few, like the Kisii people. But most Kenyans do NOT practice voodoo, nor are they into witchcraft. Like I said, I never heard soooo many voodoo stories until I sat down with Sierra Leonians.

Sokotocaliphate May 10th, 2011, 09:23 AM west africa has many tourist attractions.
Popa just loves talking out of his ass
+ 1 I'm just surprised he never even mentioned Cape Verde and The Gambia whose economy is actually tourism based :|
and there were other WA countries which used to attract tourist if only people actually visited and researched more...you'd think eh instead of relying on your brother's ex girlfriend's mother's Portuguese best friend
people just love talking...this thread is full of idiotic comments
p.s. can you actually see my pics some people say they can't :?

Best beaches in mainland west africa by far. Lush rainforests. Tourism could be big here.

They're working on tourism right now. I know that Sierra Leone has become a popular destination for people from the UK, the majority of tourists are from there. But wasn't that the case before the war anyway?
