Depends on where you go. You could go up to central Cali and it isn't uncommon there. Or if you go down to La Jolla Shores or La Jolla Cove in San Diego the water can be beautifully blue and clear. And don't let me forget Catalina Island where the visibility can often get up to 80 or 100'. So yeah maybe SOUTH Florida has nice beaches but Everything in North Florida is way different. And also Florida is too flat. So considering majestic seaside cliffs or large rock arches towering over sandy beaches and blue water...I don;t think Florida even closely compares to California for beaches and there natural scenery.

Wow, didn’t know this was a comparison thread. Of course SOUTH Florida has the nicest beaches in Florida, the northern ones aren’t that nice IMO either. But I think its funny that for the past two years Florida has had the top beach in the USA, even above Hawaii beaches, according to Dr. Beach, which yes his list is respected. Florida’s beaches don’t even come close? When I was in SoCal the beach water was; dark, murky, cold, and the I found San Diego Beach very Touristy. Sure you guys have cliffs, so what, the water is incredibly cold also, imagine going out into crystal clear emerald green water, about 88 degrees, so warm you can just jump right in, and looking out for miles and seeing nothing but the blue and green of south Florida water. Now I would say Siesta Key Beach on Florida’s Gulf Coast is one of the nicest beaches in the US, and South Beach as well. Not to mention all the Florida Keys, yes there are some beaches there. Please don’t go insulting Florida Beaches, we have some of the nicest in the world. I was only asking if Cali had blue water.

Oh yea, and just as your land is bumpy and our land is flat, so is your ocean wavy and ours is flat. Sure Cali is good for surfing, but I find the flatness or just right sized waves, of Florida to be much ore enjoyable.

^^ Leave San Diego alone! :) That guy's from Orange County. Not SD. I personally prefer the beaches along the Gulf(i.e. Gulf Shores, Perdido Key) to all others. I've been to Hawaii, S. Florida, NC, SC and all over California. But again, just my preference.

I wasn't insulting Florida beaches at all. I was just stating my preference. But even though you think the water is too cold or murky, it is murky in some parts because the waves churn up and sand, it's not filthy or anything. And I would rather jump in to 70 degree water on and 85 degree day in So Cal than jump into 88 degree water on a 90 degree Florida day. I just prefer the more refreshing one but whatever it's your opinion. By the way Haldcottingham, San Diego's beaches are the best in SoCal I think...

I don't get it, why all the arguments about wich city, state or coast have better beaches?.. for some one who growed up enjoying the Caribbean Beaches, I can tell 1000 of reasons why nither of you makes any sense... This it's supose to be a thread to show pictures, and the theme it's, beaches were you live, not the best beach in the world...'cuz if you haven't notice yet, the best beaches in the world aren't into the United Staes...

Here's a few pictures I took a couple of weeks ago at Nefyn beach, North Wales, UK. It's not the closest beach to me but I live inland so you have to drive for an hour and a half or so to get to the coast.

and here's some web pictures of other beaches in North and mid Wales, the water isn't superwarm here but the beaches are nice and relaxing and usually quite quiet (excpet summer weekends and public holidays when many are packed with daytrippers. I much prefer a quiet unspoiled beach even if it isn't great for sunbathing compared to a packed commercialised beach with lots of facilities, but I know many people don't agree.

Haha, you are so damn right. Sometimes we've got a beautiful summer in the Netherlands, like last year. We had for like 3 weeks, more than 35 degrees, and a lot of other weeks with more than 25 degrees. But this year it's rainy every day. So when there are some good hot day's, the beaches are fully crowded. But the party's on the beach's over here are stunning! Like bloomingdale is wonderful. Gorgeous woman and funky house music, from early in the evening untill deep in the night, almost every day.

But the time is in oure advance. Because of the global warming it's getting hotter in the Netherlands. About 20 years the beaches in spain and a lot of other mediterranean country's are to hot. In the Netherlands the wetter would be perfect. I'm wondering how the dutch beaches will look like over 20 years.

Well I have to say that I passed my exchange there and it was so great!!! Anyway the problem you have with the beaches there, is not the temperature which I think that it will turn better during the years, the problem is that beaches are facing the channel, looking at UK and this is a place with heavy ship transit so the waters are dirty and the sea current is quite strong. But is even worst cause if the global warming keeps going you won´t have to care too much about the beaches cause in 20 years these will be under sea level, not only beaches but half of Holland and Belgium!!!

In Spain, where you will find some of the best beaches in the world won´t have to be worried about rising temperatures because the watter is already cold by the Atlantic, the big problem will be the rising of the sea level as well wich will eat around 2 metres in the next 20 years for sure.

We got the dunes to keep the Netherlands dry.

At this map you will see that, if we contain oure strong dikes, there will be no problem:

http://www.ahn.nl/demo/ahn0m.jpg

The dunes are more than 30 meters high, so that most be enough. We already working on it, and new dunes are set into position. (yes, made by people) The beach would be repositioned some meters back and a copple of meters higher. This is a naturel movement, with some help of people.

The water is certainly dirty, because of the strong sea. Nothing to do about that

that's what I think as well - way too cold, even in summer

It's not super-warm but during the summer it's fine for a swim. The Western UK has warm sea temperatures for the latitude because of the gulf stream that brings warm water from the Carribean. Of course it is cooler by the time it reaches us but it's still perfectly swimmable in summer at least.

Maybe if you have been pampered all your life by the sub-tropical waters of Florida or Tel-Aviv you might be too much of a wuss though ;)

This map suggest that the SW of England has similar sea temperatures to the Bulgarian coastal resorts and only a couple of degrees less than parts of the Italian adriatic coast.

Note that only a small % of HK's land is urban. The territory has alot of beaches but the ones I mentioned are some of the most popular, suitable for swimming and are manages by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Photographers frequently photoshop photos to make the water appear bluer than it really was. Easily done, but a bit misleading.

Thats true, but maybe not to missleading. Ive noticed that no camera really captures the full color of the ocean, so using photo shop can give the viewer a better idea of how it looked in person.

Well, in my unscientific opinion, the water looks more "blue" in tropical or subtropical places.. so, being in Florida the water probably does look blue. Maybe it has to do with the white sand, or the marine life, etc...I am not sure what causes the torquoise water... maybe copper. In the North Atlantic, or other northern bodies of water, the water never looks as "blue" to me; more grey/green/blue. That is not a fact, just my personal observation. A lot of photographers will habitually tweak the colours to make the water appear blue just because blue water looks nicer. So easy to do and very tempting... but as I say sometimes misleading.

Probably the water being so blue in tropical or sub-tropical areas IS because the sand in some of those areas tends to be whiter. Also because they don't get such large waves to churn up the sand. B/C if you look at some of the places in Hawaii or Fiji where the waves break beyond the reefs the water is much darker and murkier.

Acctually in Florida on a great day the water is ussually Emerald green, warm, and soooooo clear. I myself have never witnessed a perfectly blue water beach. Ive seen plenty of photos of the Bahamas, I know the water there is blue, and in Italy they have some of the best beaches in the world. But for some reason on the Island of Palm Beach in SoFla the water appears very blue, like a swimming pool, on this UNTAMPERED live imagery cam. I posted the photo before, here it is again. No where else in Florida have I seen water this color.

http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/9206/palmbeacheo3.jpg

So can anyone explain why some water is emerald like and only a few miles away it is blue like a pool?

Taller, Better
July 28th, 2007, 06:30 AM
It has a lot to do with the depth... in the shallow part it is turquoise, and as soon as it drops off, it turns blue. I think the prettiest beach I have ever seen in my life was Clearwater, Florida. Shallow, and incredibly warm, with thousands of tiny brightly coloured fishes swimming around my legs! It was charming! St Lucia has some incredible beaches too, and I hear Cuba is famous for its beaches.

I think I heard somewhere that the emerald tint in the shallow areas is because of really tiny particles of algae, like plankton or something. Anyways I don't think I have ever seen a perfectly blue part of the beach either but in some tropical areas it almost looks white or just super clear, like parts of Fiji or Bora Bora, which I think has the most amazing beaches on the entire planet.

Jonesy55

Also, clarity of water is often better on tiny tropical islands because they don't have any rivers depositing sediment into the sea.

Ive went to the beach once and the water was really blue but murky and REALLY warm for about 30 yards out, then once you went past that the water got cold darker and REALLY clear. As the day went on the cold clear water moved in closer to shore, then a storm came and as far as you could see the blue murky water was gone and the clear cold water was all that was left. Never seen this before but I think when cold and warm water meets it has that effect. But this is rare, mostly the water in Florida is warm and emeraldish.

BTW, for the light blue water thing. I've notice that in pictures of Seas and Archipelagos (Caribean, Mediteranian, South Pacific, etc) the water is like that, but I've been to many Pacific beaches in central america and the water is dark blue/greyish.

Also, clarity of water is often better on tiny tropical islands because they don't have any rivers depositing sediment into the sea.

I'm more into tropical beaches than the ones near the cities.
