i'll be busy all pride morning assembling a float, then taking it apart at the end of the parade. will see some of it but as usual, volunteers get the s**t end of the stick. in case the weather gods are in a foul mood, let me quote barbra... do'nt bring around a cloud to rain on my parade.

Boo..I'm missing it this year cuz I'm not in town. I still think it's one of the prettier pride parades, not only because of the perfectly tanned Vancity boys but cuz the backdrop is so beautiful :) Then after the parade all the boys hang around English Bay omygawd I can't think about this anymore or I'm gonna cry...

I might be going if im in town. I usually always go, but really, Vancouver's pride is a let down. Its a fun day and always buzzing with energy all over the West End, but the festival is lacking music stages. Davie Street should be closed down with dj's playing on stages and beer gardens set up at Bute, Thurlow and the Shoppers Parking lot. The party should last all day till 11pm much like it does in Toronto and Montreal. The only thing Vancouver's pride has going for it is the spectacular setting on Sunset Beach.

They closed down Davie and did the beer garden thing in 2003 and the street was packed. The only problem was, the beer gardens were set up in the middle of davie street with no live music stages associated with them. I heard something that they lost money and couldnt get permits to do it again. Very unfortunate.

Im probably heading to Montreal that weekend as their pride festival is on as well. Their parade was the week before but the street party on St. Catherines is still happening and will be much more fun than Vancouver's sleepy bandstand stage with lesbian folk singers at the beach...

vancouver's pride society is in bad shape - the parade almost fell apart earlier this year

vancouver likes to keep it "low key"

they do have davie day - i think it was a couple weeks ago - where they close the street down and there are patios and beer gardens, music etc all over the place

the whole scene here is pretty blah - trying to get people out to events is a tough thing according to promoters

i remember when they tried this gay mardi gras thing a while back at graceland - a long while back - lol - it was on the labour day weekend and they had 3 big nights planned - the first night was friday and they flew in chris shepard from to to play - i think a dozen people showed up - the next night it was Amber who was still riding the success of that annoying studio 54 song - and i don't think there was more than 60 people there - i got in free cause my friend had passes - the promoter was hoping to make it an annual event but it was a huge failure

the other problem is the gay community in vancouver is very splintered - surrey has its own pride parade and event in june i think and east van aka the drive has its own pride events around june 24th - when most cities around the world have them which happens around the stonewall date and i have heard people say they don't go to or support the west end event

i do know a lot of people think that the toronto pride is too big and corporate and they long for the days when Vancouvers parade was simple and didn't have all the corporate floats etc. blah blah blah

the boatcruises are suppossed to be a huge success as well as the numerous T dances that day

plus add into the isolation of Vancouver not many people can make it or try to make it here for the events - toronto has a huge population within hours that can make it for the day

I appreciate the fact that we don't have as large of a catchment area as Toronto and Montreal; obviously those markets are going to attract many more people than Vancouver will, even if they were the same size city as Van. Trying to get people out to events can be difficult in Vancouver yes, but on Pride it's not really hard at all. There are 300,000 people at the parade/festival on the Sunday so a street party with live music stages would do incredibly well.

they have a the big festival at the beach though

no need for the street party

i guess they could just move the venue from the beach to the street

but who would want to abandon a beautiful setting like the beach for a street?

like i say there is a davie street fair every summer anyway

There is totally a need for a street party.
The festival at the beach is lame
That is my whole argument.

Hardly anyone is ever dancing or paying much attention to whats going on on the stage there.
There is a need for stages set up on Davie with DJs playing till midnight to add some energy and party-like atmosphere to Vancouver pride. They can keep the stage at the beach for people who wanna sit on the grass and listen to folk music, meanwhile have stages with DJs (and possibly beer gardens at some) on Davie. Those stages would attract way more crowds and be what gay guys are looking for. A party.
