View Full Version : LONDON | Walbrook Square | 107m | 22 fl | Prep
wjfox July 29th, 2007, 06:44 PM What does everyone think of this? :)
Walbrook Square
The City of London
Height: 107m
Floors: 22
Architect: Norman Foster and Jean Nouvel
Developer: Legal & General
This tower's unusual shape has earned it the nickname of "Darth Vader's helmet". In addition to the main building, there will be
a publicly accessible exhibition space housing the remains of the Roman Temple of Mithras, which used to stand on this site.
Work is expected to get underway in October 2007.

Monkey July 29th, 2007, 06:59 PM I hate this project. What stands there now is abysmal but this is just as bad. How can you take two of the world's best architects, Norman Foster and Jean Nouvel, and yet still come out with such an piss poor building? :dunno: It has no coherence whatsoever.
There are some really exciting projects in the City but this is not one of them.
wjfox July 29th, 2007, 07:12 PM I think it looks great from some angles - but rather bulky and awkward from others. The best place to see it will be from outside the Bank of England in my opinion (as shown in the 2nd and 3rd pictures).
london lad July 29th, 2007, 10:06 PM Best proposal in the city after the pinnacle & 122LH. great use of a central site & some very interesting architecture.
Mr Bricks July 29th, 2007, 10:26 PM I think itīs great. The lower more boxy part of the building is a bit ugly though. I donīt like how itīs looming over the street.
Muse July 29th, 2007, 11:22 PM The tower component looks like a funky Japanese capsule hotel.
Skabbymuff July 30th, 2007, 03:23 AM this one is weird. i like it but i dont at the same time? im not sure! interesting at least. too clumpy from certain views for my liking too.
Gendo July 30th, 2007, 03:32 AM Man those are some piss poor renderings.
Phobos July 30th, 2007, 11:27 PM I don't think it looks bad.Maybe it will look too fat when you look at it from the other bank of the river.
The facade is strange and the render doesn't give a good idea of how it will look.
poiman July 30th, 2007, 11:49 PM horrible
arsiakas July 31st, 2007, 12:02 AM nice
Tubeman July 31st, 2007, 12:37 AM I quite like this scheme, but I'd be interested to see a rendering from Waterloo Bridge to see how much it invades St Pauls' space on the skyline: I suspect it may be a little too close for comfort.
Brightonboi July 31st, 2007, 06:29 AM Omg, What terrible pictures, It looks like it was taken in the 80's with that quality.
Tharpe August 10th, 2007, 09:28 AM i wish they proposed a 60's tower block instead of this
Agent Vengence August 10th, 2007, 12:26 PM terrible
and how is it named Darth Vaders helmet? i don't see any resemblance
wjfox August 10th, 2007, 12:32 PM If I post this model, from this angle, then surely you notice a resemblance...

Columbus August 10th, 2007, 02:11 PM Hideous, far to bulky for the skyline
Varenukha August 10th, 2007, 02:19 PM I am going off this project - it's shape, a gradually inclining slope to a wide upper section, has a quality which is the opposite of "soar". Although I really like the design and its audacity, it is yet another example of London going for iconic rather than coherent. The skyline will look a bit of a mess, undoing the excellent job that Bishopsgate, 122LH and Heron are going to do.
DarJoLe August 10th, 2007, 04:03 PM IThe skyline will look a bit of a mess, undoing the excellent job that Bishopsgate, 122LH and Heron are going to do.
Not really. In fact, it actually binds the cluster better together when you see it from the west by creating a rather cool 'rippling' element between Swiss Re and 20FC.
Varenukha August 10th, 2007, 06:51 PM I'm really not convinced, but then all that anyone has seen are renders, which as someone else has pointed out, are not of a fantastic quality. But, whilst not taking issue with interesting and challenging architecture, this one does provide support to those who believe that there exists an inconsistency and incoherence in London's architectural development.

Tharpe August 12th, 2007, 01:00 PM it actually looks like a skyscraper which has melted and spilt all over the place. worst sky/groundscraper on the planet EVER.
it will totally ruin londons soon to be great skyline.
Michelino August 12th, 2007, 01:35 PM Just horrible!!! :uh:  :puke:
Varenukha August 12th, 2007, 08:49 PM As I said, the renders are quite unimpressive. But the ones that are available do emphasise a lateral sprawl which is most of out of keeping with its environment. But I guess it is great for the ego of the architect, which often appears to be the prime consideration.
Sitback August 12th, 2007, 10:29 PM I like it.
Madman August 12th, 2007, 11:02 PM I like it as well, and dispite the odd blib in their portfolios i have real confidence in the architects involved in the proposal bringing a quality addition to the CoL.
Its AlL gUUd August 13th, 2007, 01:32 AM not sure about this yet.
surprised English Heritage hasn't stopped this one.
Sentient Seas August 13th, 2007, 09:26 AM Yeah, weird design.
jakkk August 13th, 2007, 10:16 AM The design has been modified from the one that has been posted on here by the way. The bit that sticks out is now thinner and minus the smooth edge and im not sure whether it resembles some evil monster anymore.
PresidentBjork August 13th, 2007, 09:35 PM I tried my best to like this project, and upon failing that, tried to see its architectural merit - but I can't.
While other developments are going upwards this one is going outwards and it's not a good thing.
jak3m January 2nd, 2008, 09:23 PM just. amazing.:banana::banana:
hella good January 4th, 2008, 12:34 AM ah im glad this has got approval. i always liked how sriking it was on the skyline. and its really nice to have a more organic shape amongst the more angular buildings of the city
ames January 4th, 2008, 04:36 PM ugly from my point of view london need something tall for change.
Hed_Kandi January 4th, 2008, 04:52 PM Gorgeous Design
Zenith January 4th, 2008, 10:21 PM not sure about this yet.
surprised English Heritage hasn't stopped this one.
Why be surprised? It isn't tall so it is accepted.
Tubeman January 5th, 2008, 11:26 AM ugly from my point of view london need something tall for change.
Apart from 122 Leadenhall, The Pinnacle, Heron and LBT right?
This site isn't suitable for anything tall: it's on the western fringe of the city closest to St Paul's. We have actively been demolishing buildings at this end of the cluster to make St Paul's more prominent (Draper's Gardens)
hella good January 6th, 2008, 05:19 AM lol yeah thats what i thought. because its not like london doesn't have tons of high rise projects on the go.
city_thing January 6th, 2008, 09:17 AM It looks a bit like a blob of playdough, that's been dumped over the City. It seems to take up so much space, like the bottom of it is eating up the surrounding buildings and streets. I'm not sure what I make of it...

Beginning to get covered by the sheet of death. Couple of cranes up and the sound of demolition machinery all around.

Yep, it's just Foster now.
Don't know when the redesign will be released though.

LondonFox August 3rd, 2011, 01:27 PM I personally loved the original design... it would have balanced out Fenchurch St tower on the other side of the city cluster.
Genį August 3rd, 2011, 01:36 PM It's a terrible design, with no finesse, no refinement, no subtlety, no elegance. I am very disappointed to hear that the architects are Foster and Nouvel. My only hope is that the actual building will look totally different from these renders....
JLAG August 3rd, 2011, 01:48 PM I second that.
Injeanious August 3rd, 2011, 03:49 PM First time I've seen this and personally, I think it's horrible.

On the basis of that, what should this building be called?
How about 'The stormtrooper' or 'Darth Vader'?
I was in Walbrook this weekend for London Open House, and the removal of the hideous 60s complex around the temple of minerva was a great relief.
Poor old St. Stephen's. It's becoming surrounded by aliens.
RobertWalpole September 19th, 2011, 06:43 PM Isn't this the old design?
PortoNuts September 29th, 2011, 10:38 PM I don't think the design has changed.

I cannot believe they are actually building it. Its going to ruin everything around it.
