It took me over 8 hours to draw this:

Isn't it a beautiful building? I tried to capture the gleaming metallic quality of the crown and ornaments.

I finished my drawing of Empire State today! I had to guess a bit with the two entrances at the base though, since I got no replies in my other thread yet.

You mean these? The first is my first ever skyscraper diagram from 1997, and the second is from 1999.

Brilliant drawings DamienK, I have to say I have the 'worlds tallest buildings over 300m as a print out on my notice board'. The new ones of the Chrysler and ESB are just stunning, all the detail is there. what software do use to draw them? I prefer to work with good old fashioned pen and paper myself, when I get the chance.

Great inspiration, keep them up.

Great drawings ! What program did you use ?

DamienK
July 29th, 2003, 08:45 AM
For most of my drawings, and including Chrysler and ESB, Windows Paint was the only program I used. I dabbled in Adobe Illustrator for a while and found my drawings looked relatively flat and lifeless.

I started using Paint to draw buildings in 1997. Over the last 6 years, bit by bit, I've been able to make improvements.

I'm always sketching buildings and cities too. Since high school my stationery has been dotted with sketches of fantasy buildings and skylines.

BTW, a while back I completed new drawings of the WTC towers and Metlife (PanAm). You guys want to see? :D

BTW, my skyscraper page is no longer being updated. The last times I added stuff was over a year ago. The amount of server space allocated to me is at 99 percent.

Thanks guys! The WTC and PanAm (as it appeared in the 60s). They took approx 5 or 6 hours each. It's hard to tell. I work on and off on them. I often eat or watch TV while working.

I have many unfinished drawings. An Illustrator drawing of mine, Jin Mao, has so many elements in it it clogged my system and only the crown is actually complete. I like glass buildings, but I tend to draw stone-clad ones because I'm not good at making glass look realistic!!

With Chrysler I worked on it from about 3 pm to 7 pm, when I had to go to work, and then when I got back, 12 to 4 am!

And yes, I did not "lift" the Pan Am logo from anything! I copied it by eye from "Catch me if you Can". At no point during drawing PanAm did I use anything other than Paint, or any other of the four ones I've done so far. If you've seen the movie, there is a brief shot of the Pan Am sign on top of Metlife (the movie was set in the 60s). I made a screen capture from the DVD rental.

Here's a shot of them at 1:1

More great stuff Damien! The WTC and PanAm look very realistic, and nice angles you chose to draw the WTC Towers. How about a Woolworth one next? :D

How the hell did you draw it so perfectly???

DamienK
July 30th, 2003, 10:55 PM
Edited: Sorry, I get kind of hyper when I don't get enough sleep

I don't know when it can be finished, but Woolworth would be very, very difficult to do. I think I have enough photos of it, and I have some old elevations (from 1910-11!!) reproduced in some very good Skyscraper books.

PPG - I'll try to add clouds, and reflections, (I will need help with Photoshop) but if I can't get what I want, I'll just do it "flat". That is, no reflections.

Actually, now is not a good time. . . I just started back at uni, and I have alot of work to deal with. Those drawings I did were just finished days before the end of the semester break.

Plus I turn 20 on Monday. :)

The Chrsler Building is the finest building in the world, you know it! My favorite, certainly. And you know, lately, I've been having fantasies of making an epic movie about "tying up loose ends" in Greek mythology - or Roman - in which the climax would take place atop the Chrysler building. That would just be so cool.

But my opinion? If you need proof that God gives gifts of talents, there's the proof! That building!

Wow Damien those are great! How does your mind come up with these things? I love the multiple replication of the same building, (the Crowne tower). You should forward some of these to some architects, and hear what they would have to say about them. Youre so talented.
