Rather unique. Pity it had to be torn down, or it would have looked quite ok if preserved.

benscrape July 17th, 2003, 02:15 AM 8/10. Would have been one of New York's classics. It had a great design and powerful stance in lower Manhattan. I just don't understand how NYC would tear this beauty down for 1 Liberty Plaza.
Wisma July 17th, 2003, 09:51 AM A 8/10 for this oldie
New Jack City July 17th, 2003, 08:26 PM 9/10...It's the Singer Building! Look at the ornamentation and details. This big guy OWNED the Lower Manhattan skyline even before the Woolworth!

Wisma November 24th, 2003, 08:16 PM Why is this building demolished anyway?.
Gulcrapek November 24th, 2003, 10:35 PM Its narrow floorplates were inefficient. The 'renewal' craze of NYC at the time led to its destruction (similar to why Penn Station was destroyed).
I like its replacement as much as the original though. I'm probably one of few.
SeeMacau November 25th, 2003, 02:51 AM Nice

7 World Trade July 8th, 2004, 05:29 PM singer was truly a classic of the neo-classical era...only woolworth can ever defeat its splendor. in fact, i think singer was such a special skyscraper. you can find other buildings that look like woolworth, but you'll never find another building that look like singer. its beaux arts roof and facade was really one of a kind.
and singer was the first really tall skyscraper to be built in the entire history of the world, and it began the tower architecture shape that have became so prevalent among pre war skyscrapers in nyc and chicago (like old metlife, woolworth, 40 wall, amer. int'l, chrysler, 20 exch. pl, general electric, 500 5th, etc.). it was one of the biggest breakthroughs in the history of high rises.
yet they still tore it down, and replaced it with a black box!!! :mad2: :bleep:
