There is not a single hotel or resort of international standard in the wonderful beaches of the Obock region. Just small scale touristic camps. Its sad when thousands of jobs could be created with the use of the region's potential. It is not normal that Obock is the poorest region when it has the longest and one of the most beautiful coastline in Djibouti. Tourism could really be a factor of economic development in this country, so bad the authorities are not doing enough and keep focusing on ports, ports and ports.

No I haven't yet. I basically discovered my own country a couple of years ago (my parents moved to Sweden when I was 3). So far, I have only been to Addis Ababa. On my next trip, I will probably be everywhere except for Addis, there is so much to see.

Your ports are obviously a big source of income, but you need to diverse your economy.

You've got a growing middle class next door without any sea beaches, and we won't exactly choose Eritrea as a vacation destination. Not to mention the economically strong Middle East, France, etc. There is a lot of money to be made here, you should go back home and "push the right buttons". :)

Diversifying the economy is a question of life and death. Ethiopia won't be using solely our ports for ever, Kenya is entering the game too. Development won't be reached if our economy keeps depending on ports and logistics (though we have to invest more in that field, its a large source of income).

I have few months left before graduating, I'll go back inshallah and try to do my best. But with the current government, the high level of corruption and mismanagement of public funds, believe me, its not gonna be an easy task...

I don't want to hijack the thread. But I don't know where else to post it.

Can you tell me about the political situation of Djibouti? How is the relationship between Issa and Afar now? Isn't the president wanting to change the constitution to get re-elected?

Its ok...The president already hijacked our constitution and amended it. It now allows him to run for a third term in the next year presidential election that he will surely win (same party ruling since independence). He had two choices to amend the constitution, either get the parliament vote for it or organize a referendum. He obviously choose the parliament because all of our MPs are from the ruling party (not a single seat for opposition).
The opposition is disorganized and not united, so I don't expect things to change in the near future. That's sad.

As for ethnic harmony, well we can say its good since the end of the brief civil war. The Afar rebels joined the government since then and political differences were almost solved. But Somalis still tend to have the upper hand in the political and economic scenes. That needs to change if we want to build a stronger ethnic harmony.

I will one day visit Djibouti. Love the people and the country. Ever hear a Djiboutian hotty speaking French? Forget France.
Hopefully there will be no some crazy Somali gangs there trying to shoot me.

Power generation plantsare used. But Ethiopia is now supplying us with hydro power generated by their dams. Its cheaper than the fuel run plants we've been using (Djibouti has the most expensive electricity rate in the region and the entire Arab League countries). And of course hydro is cleaner energy.
There are also plans to develop wind, solar energy at Goubet and develop the large geothermal potential at Assal Lake.

Yes there is the Horn of Africa biggest private refinery at the Doraleh Port Complex. They mainly supply ships and the navies patroling in the region (fighting piracy).

Its good, really. Things went wrong at the civil war (yes we had one too) when a Afar majority rebel group the FRUD fought with the government for a greater representation of the Afars in the government, economics, more investments in the Afar north ect...But there never was a separatist movement, thanks God the unity of the country is not questioned.

Even though I'm an ethnic Somali myself, I admit, Somalis are by far overrepresented in government (so far all president are Somali-Issa,, major posts ect...), economics (most companies, richest people ect...) and sometimes culturally (most Djiboutian writers are Somalis). I believe there was marginalization policy towards Afars in a way or another. So I understand their frustrations in that field.

But despite this, remember 70% of our population lives in the capital . Its really multicultural, and people mix a lot and speak more than 1 language. For example all the Arabs live there. This has contributed to reduce stereotypes, and fear of the other. Even during the civil war, there weren't ethnic violence between civilians, just government and rebels.

I hope things improve politically and we shall be fine.

Nice country.

i've met a few Djiboutians at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar.
Very motivated boys and girls and all keen on returning to Djibouti to further develop their country. Some mistook them for Mauritanians or Malians lol.

Have you seen that? Thanks God, I don't really know why but it looks like the brain drain that is killing the continent so much has not affected us to that point. Most Djiboutian students abroad do come back, work and settle in Djibouti. There is this strong feeling among youth that the old generation (the one that controls the country now) failed us and it is our duty to take "charge".
There are even those who will work abroad when they complete their studies and then come back years later to invest what they earned back home. Thanks God again, lets hope it stays that way.

Mauritanians do look like us even though they're at the other end of the continent. For example, they way our ladies dress is almost similar.

If only they could renovate the whole Old City like this it could really show the beauty and uniqueness of Djibouti's architectural heritage. Too bad they're waiting for companies to buy the buildings and renovate it themselves. A vast portion of the Old City is in dire state...depressing to see this is not on the government's agenda (besides some local NGO's and associations, it seems to worry no one else).

Le Djibouti a le potentiel pour devenir une destination balnéaire de première ordre comme les Maldives, vos plages sont sublime et les djiboutiens sont chaleureux!
C'est une oasis de beauté et de prospérité dans la région! inchallah les investissements touristiques seront nombreux :)

Merci YorkTown:), c'est vrai nos plages sont tres belles et nous sommes chaleureux, mais pour ce qui est du tourisme il y'a une politique dans ce domaine qui evite le tourisme de masse au nom de la protection de l'environement, ils cherchent plutot a attirer une certaine clientele de touristes tres fortune, plutot que le touriste lambda. Je pense que c'est pour cela qu'il n'y a pas trop d'investissement dans le domaine, meme si ces dernieres annees le nombres d'hotels construit a fortement augmenter.

We have somthing in common then, most of my girlfriends back home were Afar.

Though very similar to Somalis (in ALL fields) Afars are really charming people in a lot of ways. Their hospitality for example, is legendary, more than any other people I've seen.

A few months back I was on the coach and opposite me were two Cafar girls (I didn't know they were Cafar, I thought they were Somali).. Anyway they kept chatting away in their mother tongue, and I kept starring trying to work out what they were saying.. the only thing I understood were a couple of numbers and the colour 'Caasan'..
I honestly thought I was going scary:nuts:.. Untill they told me they we're Cafar.

Yep Qafar Af (Q is read like C in Somali) is really close to Af Somali. But I like their pronunciation, even when the word is similar to Somali, sounds sweeter. Its a beautiful and sweet language, really cute especially when the girls are speaking...

But according to the CERD (Djibouti Research Center), it is the most threatened language. In Djibouti, the national languages are threatened by the French, but Afar even more. At least for the Somali, more books are published, a number of privately owned medias groups (Universal TV, and all the others), and the fact that its the majority language, it is less threatened than Afar. Nowadays, you'll even find Afars than speak Somali and French only (I even have friends like that). Even Somali is now threatening Afar language. I hope they do something to save this beautiful language.

Finally they adopted a new law that makes it compulsory for students to learn both languages (Afar and Somali). Glad about that, some stupid folks wanted each student to learn his mother tongue. My hopes in that field are based on the new generation, they'll be able to perfectly speak both national languages, and thats a plus for the country's ethnic harmony.

In Somalia, its true native and minority languages didn't escape the Af Somali dominance. I have Barawaani (from their father's side) relatives, and they speak only Somali.

Yay!... but I feel stupid for not seeing that now.

Well, like them all, except for Eritrea, whose existence is a slap in the face for all Africans, and a high-five for colonialism. But the people there are nice. Somalia, really do feel sorry for them, seeing all the potential, Djibouti is nice but fleecing us, Kenya's cool but makes me jealous everytime I hear about them, Sudan... can't say I'm fond of their government but really have no other reason to dislike. Did I mention I dislike Eritrea?

Nothing I came across, I visited Tadjourah and didn't see any ruins. You're right though, Tadjourah is the oldest city in the country, its existence is thought to be older than 3000 years. But with our stupid government, no archaeological digging or work has taken place.
There is also the Ashgoumeti site near Goubet where ruins dating to between 8000 to 10 000 years have been recovered. Again same negligence from the authorities. In that field, the majority of the preservation work is done by local NGO's.

Yah, you can say I'm an unoficial ambassador for my country in SSC, and my mission is to share the beauty of this pretty unknown country...:)

^^No independence wasn't just granted to us. The French didn't wanna leave, remember we were the last French colony to gain independence on the continent.

And yes, though it didn't make much noise (at that time we were about 300 000 people at max) we fought for independence. People were killed, thousands were expelled by the French (my extended family members) etc...
Plus all the pain colonization brought (French were of course "superior" to locals, tortures, humiliations etc....).

Well, a monument in the memory of all these people was a good idea.

The Somalis nomads also use that sword, its called qolxad. Somali and Afar nomads dress the same (the men).

The project is not completed yet, so I guess the roads will come later.

For the paint, yes, but then when people buy these units they can paint with whatever they want.

They are, but the units are not given out for free. The people will buy these units at a discounted price and over 20 years.

Simfan, white and dirt don't mix, thats why people paint with colors like beige. Personally I rather have it white and repaint it every year.

Djibouti, si j'utilisais Google Translation, il y aurait des accents la ou il faudrait les mettre. J'ai un clavier en Anglais et non pas en Francais.
En plus, ca fait longtemps que j'ai arrete d'utiliser mon Francais, donc ce n'est plus au niveau ou c'etait il y a 8-9 ans. Je fais beaucoup de fautes d'orthographe, grammaire, conjugaison, etc, et franchement, je m'en fiche un peu.

It is relatively harmless if you chew it occasionally, as I do, but if you chew khat everyday, its no longer the case. That is at the individual level.

Now imagine you have a society where a vast majority of men chew khat, and it is addictive . Here are some of its harms:

We are a small poor country and we import both khat and vegetables from Ethiopia, now the amount of money we send to Ethiopia through our khat imports are almost 10 times higher than the amount we pay for vegetables imports. All that money spent on a drug!

As you mentioned, it is addictive, there are poor men who spend their meager resources on khat while their families are in need. It happens that the father is spending on khat while his kids don't have transportation to go to school.

Khat created a social problem, almost comparable in scale to those of societies with alcoholism problems. It brought social break down, addicted fathers who can't keep their jobs, or can't provide for their families because they spend on khat.

Overall low productivity rate of the workers because of khat. An average khat session is between 6 to 7 hours, imagine the time lost! What about those who do that everyday! People start rushing from their offices at noon when the plane that carries the daily khat imports from Ethiopia lands (it has to be fresh, thus a plane transports it every day!).

And so on...it is a disaster that doesn't carry a name, it is ruining our society in so many ways and any attempt to bring the issue to debate is crushed by the khat importers who form a powerful lobby here. They finance the ruling party's election campaigns in exchange of guaranties that nothing should threaten the khat import.

The most palpable problems are the social problems khat brought. Unfortunatly, there is no political will to address the issue and they completely ignore it as if nothing was wrong. :ohno::ohno::ohno:

I really wonder what the situation is gonna be 10 years from now.

It is relatively harmless if you chew it occasionally, as I do, but if you chew khat everyday, its no longer the case. That is at the individual level. why do you chew it to begin with? and why do people chew it every day, especially if they know what can happen if they do.

Now imagine you have a society where a vast majority of men chew khat, and it is addictive . Here are some of its harms:

We are a small poor country and we import both khat and vegetables from Ethiopia, now the amount of money we send to Ethiopia through our khat imports are almost 10 times higher than the amount we pay for vegetables imports. All that money spent on a drug!

As you mentioned, it is addictive, there are poor men who spend their meager resources on khat while their families are in need. It happens that the father is spending on khat while his kids don't have transportation to go to school.

Khat created a social problem, almost comparable in scale to those of societies with alcoholism problems. It brought social break down, addicted fathers who can't keep their jobs, or can't provide for their families because they spend on khat.

Overall low productivity rate of the workers because of khat. An average khat session is between 6 to 7 hours, imagine the time lost! What about those who do that everyday! People start rushing from their offices at noon when the plane that carries the daily khat imports from Ethiopia lands (it has to be fresh, thus a plane transports it every day!). 6-7 hours?!?! all your doing is chewing leaves and spitting them out. why can't you do that while you work?

And so on...it is a disaster that doesn't carry a name, it is ruining our society in so many ways and any attempt to bring the issue to debate is crushed by the khat importers who form a powerful lobby here. They finance the ruling party's election campaigns in exchange of guaranties that nothing should threaten the khat import.

The most palpable problems are the social problems khat brought. Unfortunatly, there is no political will to address the issue and they completely ignore it as if nothing was wrong. :ohno::ohno::ohno:

I really wonder what the situation is gonna be 10 years from now.
for the answer to that just look at the united states political system.

You chew it for fun, the feeling is quiet unique. Those who chew it everyday are addicted.

Yep, you chew leaves but it also is a social thing. Friends gather in the "Mabraz" (place where they chew khat) and have their khat session together, talking, debating, having fun...

Loool yes. But we long crossed the bar where khat was seen as something embarassing.

When I go to Djib for holidays and I call my friends, I'm like when do we meet for a drink or a dinner, and they're like "when do we chew khat". Khat became a perfect activity to catch up and stuff...especially among men.

The Djibouti Palace Kempinski was built by the Dubai group "Nakheel", the group behind the Palm Islands there. It's by far the best hotel in town and the best in our region along with the Sheraton Addis.

Nakheel also planned to build a complex on Maskali Island, but didn't hear about it for a while.

Nice blue water :cheers: spectacular beaches bro, Djibouti should upgrade them with lavish romantic resorts, akin to the ones being built by Somali businessmen in Tanzania and Kenya. The tourist minister should attract them to invest in the country. You know all of them have a soft spot for Djibouti for obvious reasons.:)

Nice blue water :cheers: spectacular beaches bro, Djibouti should upgrade them with lavish romantic resorts, akin to the ones being built by Somali businessmen in Tanzania and Kenya. The tourist minister should attract them to invest in the country. You know all of them have a soft spot for Djibouti for obvious reasons.:)

There is the Somali Business and Investment Council operating several projects now (malls, condominiums, super markets ect...). Hope they will invest in the tourism sector as well. Djibouti desperately needs investment in the tourism industry, hundreds of km of unspoiled beaches could house 5 star resorts. The potential is there, hopefully the investments will come.

the old mosque is a really historic monument that represent Djibouti very well, everytime i picture the country, that place comes to my mind.

Indeed, Mahamoud Harbi Square means a lot to Djiboutians. Its the historic heart of our capital...

They finally moved the market to the new building on Arta Street (next to the LIC). Its much better, less crowded and so clean and tidy! I was impressed!

Yeah there are plans to build a mall there, but they haven't started anything yet...
