Djibout, officially the Republic of Djibouti, is a small country in eastern Africa. Djibouti is bordered by Eritrea in the north, Ethiopia in the west and south, and Somalia in the southeast.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/1a/LocationDjibouti.svg/800px-LocationDjibouti.svg.png

The Republic of Djibouti gained its independence from the French on June 27, 1977.However, the history of Djibouti recorded in poetry and songs of its nomadic peoples, goes back thousands of years to a time when Djiboutians traded hides and skins for the perfumes and spices of ancient Egypt, India, and China. Through close contacts with the Arabian peninsula for more than 1,000 years, the Somali and Afar tribes in this region became among the first on the African continent to accept Islam. Djibouti is a Muslim country which regularly takes part in Islamic as well as Arab meetings.

Controlling access to the Red Sea, Djibouti is of major strategic importance, a fact that has ensured a steady flow of foreign assistance.

It is ethnically diverse and some Djiboutians have kinship ties and stong cultural link with Yemen. There is a small tourism industry but it’s becoming better with Dubai investments. Nakheel Hotels & Resorts have already opened their first international hotel and are also working on other leisure developments within the country of Djibouti which include a mountain top spa and island resorts. After Dubai’s investment , interest of foreign businessmen in the country has grown.

I'm reading about history of Djibouti now. It's realy interesting country but I can't understand why Afars don't likes Somalians and vice versa.

BTW very nice shots ! Djibuti should be turistic country.

I appreciate your interest in DJIBOUTI. I'm from there too. It's true that there has been misunderstandings between the two ethnic group, but I can assure you, things improved so well, that you'll see for exemple, an Afar that doesn't speak Afar language and speaks fluently somali and vice versa.

The 3 main ethnic groups of DJIBOUTI are: Somalis (55%) , Afar (35%) and Arabs (10%). In some websites, you'll see somalis to be around 65% or 70%, those figures are not accurate. Those figures I gave are gouvernment figures.

Wonderful pictures of DJIBOUTI. Our country is so small ( 23,200km2 ) yet it has a wonderful landscape, a very Unique one.

It is a place to be and I hope that the efforts deployed by the gouvernment and the foreign investments will improve our capacity and infrustructures and that in turn will allow the country to attract more tourists.
There are a lot of projects underway such as a island resort to be developed by Emiratis investors and another one to be developed by a Qatari group along the cost of Djibouti-ville (the capital city).
The gouvernment is also in discussions with a group from Macao to develop a touristic resort, 4 hotels and a casino on Moucha and Maskali islands that will cost around $2 billion. We hope that these projects will come into reality.

We have to share this uniqueness, beauty and authenticity with the rest of the world.

Viva DJIBOUTI!

Did you know that this lake, is Africa's lowest point at 153meters below sea level? And the world's 3rd lowest point after the Dead Sea and the Tiberiade Lake?
Did you know thta this lake contains the world's second largest salt reserve after Bolivia?
Hotels and travel agencies offer flights over the lake and they will then issue you a certificate that indicates " I have flown 150 meters below sea level"

This place by itself is a wonder!

I understand your point of view but as you probably know, Djibouti hosts the biggest french military base outside french territory and the only american military base in Africa. There are also german troops.
So those military aircrafts are usual sights in Djibouti, they're part of the "show" in Djibouti. Showing them is showing what one would see on a trip to Djibouti...

Without starting an argument, but please can you give me a calm answer. Has Djibouti ever thought of remaining a French oversea territory , something like Réunion or Martinique or French Polynesia.. Djibouti is so quaint and small....this would have brought many social benifits and people in those oversea territories are not unhappy they are enjoying the privileges of a generous welfare system.... not to talk of top schools, good roads etc....and tehy are also open to other foreign investment other than french

Yes indeed, there are some people that do think that we should stay with France, but those are a minority within the country. Personally, our independance, freedom, national identity are our pride, and you wouldn't expect anyone to ignore or think about sacrificing that.
My country, can and will one day make it. That's the whole point, I think we are ready for the challenge. Our democracy may not be perfect yet, our economy neither, but it'll come one day. Look, since Hassan Gouled left power in 1999, the economy is doing much better. We have billions of Foreign investment, the corruption level reduced significantly ect...
It's like you'd ask a Singaporean to stay with UK 4 decades ago. Do you think they regret their choice today? I don't think so. Well I hope our tiny republic will make it, as you know we already have the highest life expectancy in the region and the rest, if we work toward it, will defibatly come. Staying with France is an insult to our capacity, we are able to devellop by ourselves and we will make it.

Thanks, but I was refering to the past and not the present. France will not take any former colony again, NEVER this period is over...I was refering to the pre- 1977 period

I was just wondering ...when I look at Reuinion it looks so well-developped , clean maintained and has Africa´s highest HDI index even higher than those of Mauritius and Seychelles..which just says how good it really is...and people are very proud and free...they don´t walk with chains attached to their body..they also have an own identity

as for Singapore...they always reamined very attached to the UK...it was something like Botswana..

Ah, je vois. No, again those who favored remaining a french possession were a minority. When the May 1977 referendum was held, 98% of the population said yes to independance.
We are independant doesn't ,mean we cut the ties with France. As you know, we have had since 1977 good relations, though these last few years have not been good in the France/Djibouti relations.

Djibouti is such a beautiful country, great natural beauty

I understand your point of view but as you probably know, Djibouti hosts the biggest french military base outside french territory and the only american military base in Africa. There are also german troops.
So those military aircrafts are usual sights in Djibouti, they're part of the "show" in Djibouti. Showing them is showing what one would see on a trip to Djibouti...

:wtf: how come there so much foreign military presence, who are these foreign military protecting. And German Military:nuts::nuts::nuts::bash:

also given the presence of such foreign military, the somali pirate acheivement is more confusing to me now :nuts:

Thanks bro. Indeed, we have a beautiful, yet unknown country.

To understand these military presence, we'll need to go back to history. When Djibouti gained independance in 1977, our main two neighbors, Ethiopia and Somalia where ruled by dictators (Mengiste Haile Mariam and Syad Barre), both claimed that Djibouti was part of their territory. Ethiopia claimed that Djibouti was historically part of the Abyssin empire and Somalia claimed that since Djibouti has around 55% of it's population being ethnic Somali , Djibouti belonged to them. In the same time, the 2 countries were fighting for the Ogaden region of Ethiopia populated by ethnic Somalis.
Djibouti who was fearing a military invasion by one or the other, asked the french military not to leave, so any of these 2 countries would not think about invading.
The americans came after 9/11 to fight terrorism, so did the Germans.
Even with those foreign military forces, Eritrea invaded a tiny part of Djiboutian territory in June 2008. It's a highly volatile region, with dictatorial regimes around, those military forces discourage neighboring regimes and strenghten Djibouti's reputation of being "Une ile de paix, dans un ocean de chaos" " ("an island of peace in a ocean of chaos").

^ Somalis don't want to annex Djibouti. Siad Barre did, but he's gone. Greater Somalia is dead. The Somalis have to fix their problems before even thinking of such a thing. Maybe if Somalia ever gets it's issues fixed, the two nations can expand their relationship and protect each other when in need...we are brother nations.

During that invasion that Eritrea did to your nation, almost 100% of all Somalis were on Djibouti's side.

You are right bro. The idea of Somali Weyn (Greater Somalia) is gone. And I really hope Somalia will come from its ashes. But actually, I was mentioning Syad Barre, I know Somalians don't want to reduce my country to a Somalian province. Seriously, here in Djibouti, Somalia is the last of our neighbors from whom to expect an aggression.

By the way, how optimistic are you about the Somalian presidential election to be held in Djibouti in few days, do you think that will bring anything positive?

Xusein
January 25th, 2009, 08:11 PM
Personally, I don't expect much. This government is a fabrication without legitimacy in my opinion.

Anyway, I believe that Djibouti is the only true ally to Somalis in Africa and possibly in the world...nobody understands Somalis like Djibouti, and definitely not the countries to the west of us. Djibouti is a very nice place (although a bit too hot), and I hope for the best for your country likewise. The developments there make me wonder what is possible in Somali if they ever fix their issues. Yes, some stuff happening in Bosasso and Hargeysa outside Somalia proper, but no foreign investment and absolutely nothing like the bridge project. Nice stuff. :okay:

"Ethiopias straw" looks impressive. Ive always imagined Djibouti to be unliveable but i was wrong. I was in Afar killel and found it hard to believe that anyone could survive out there. The pictures have brought to my attention that its a pretty nice place and also has beautiful beaches. Nevertheless, I think its good that we have a good economic connection which benefits the both of us.

No worries abesha, you can come and visit. Though Djibouti is a muslim country, women can dress they way they want, especially in the capital city where you'll find tons of nightclubs located mainly on Ethiopia Road (Rue d'Ethiopie, lool). I guess it's because of our exposure to lots of foreigners (2900 french soldiers along with their families live in the capital city, plus the germans, americans ect...) and historically Djibouti was always a bit more opened compared to neighboring muslim countries such as Yemen, Somalia ect...
And we're a country with beaches and islands, so definatly, women don't swim with burqas... You can dress the way you want, beleive me.
But I have to warn you that the life is quite expensive compared to Ethiopia, so be prepared

Yes, though the country is extreemily small in size (23,200km2), the population is even smaller (850,000). Plus the fact that there are not many tourists coming in.

Visited Djibouti last year

Nice country, but to be honest I disliked a few things about the natives. They think Europeans are some kind of super humans and adore them to the fullest. They also seem to be jealous of Somalis (from Somalia) that hold European or other western nationalities, they triple checked my passport! They seem to have been infected by the French arrogance, because their dialect in Somali differs from mine and the communication went horrible I tried communicating with the airport staff in English and they couldn’t even speak it properly! Horrible….it’s like France in Africa

Wow, seems like you had a bad experience.

Djiboutians definatly don't think Europeans are superior, I completely disagree on that. Saying that we "adore Europeans to the fullest" is a ridiculous exageration to me, seriously.
When you say Djiboutians are jealous of Somalians holding different western passports, is it simply because they triple checked your passport at the airport? Does that mean Djiboutians are jealous of Somalians with western passports? Besides, why would I envy you, as a Djiboutian I can go everywhere with my passport (except Israel with whom we do not have diplomatic relations).
Finally, we are infected by "French arrogance" because with have a our own dialect or accent in Somali? Even the different regions of Somalia have different dialects, forget Djibouti which is a different country. Egypt and Yemen don't have the same dialects or accent even though Arabic is spoken in the 2 countries, does that mean one is arrogant compared to the other?
You are so negative about Djiboutians, I'm amazed.
But I do agree with you on the fact that English is not spoken enough. The gouvernment should emphasize on English, it's quiet difficult to the visitors.

I agree with you that such a phenomenon is a general one. But I don't like the exaggeration that here in Djibouti we "adore Europeans to the fullest".

For the English, as I said, it is not spoken enough. It is subject to big debates, because Djibouti wants on one hand, to strengthen English, and on the other hand to promote local languages in school ( Afar and Somali).

English is important for business (most of the investors are from the Gulf or Asia), Djibouti is a member of the Comesa, and if it wants to succeed in regional integration, we must promote English (we're the only country in the region that speaks french). And it is important for tourism that is highly promoted now (construction of new hotels and resorts).

There are debates on the role of national languages as well. French is predominant. To a point where young Djiboutians tend to communicate in French rather than our languages. Most people are not able to write or read neither Afar or Somali, which is alarming.

Finally some groups are proposing to throw French altogether and adopt English for official matters and business and strengthen the role of the national languages.

So as you can see, there are big debates over a new language policy.

If not arzaranh, where are from?

It may sound like I was exaggerating but I was not, I have travelled around other African countries as well before visiting Djibouti so I know that I can compare. In general Djiboutians treated Europeans and other Westerners much better than African/Asian tourists. ‘The asslicking’ was everywhere from room service, taxi drivers to airport staff. But I didn’t have a bad time, I enjoyed myself and most people were friendly. About the English command in Djibouti, I was shocked to see managers and other officials not being able to speak English, let’s not even start about regular folks in the town.

Well she might, but she's not. She is an ethnic Somali. A lot of Somalis and Afars (2 main ethnic groups in Djibouti, the 3rd one being the Arabs by the way) have fair skin, plus the Islamic culture and the way they dress, a lot of them do look like Arabs to some people.

If not, your impressions on Djibouti?

the volcano named "Erta Ale (http://www.earthweek.com/2008/ew081107/ew081107d.html)" is just across the boarder in Eastern Ethiopia. Parts of the Afar region of Ethiopia bordering Djibouti is volcanic and the geologic formations are continuous into Djibouti. So there is a good chance of it in my opinion. :)

Maybe Ras Siyan or someone more familiar with that area can give you a more definite answer but thats my observation.

Yosef, the pictures you posted are so beautiful. Look all these wonderful unspoiled beaches. Wow!

Guess what, the photos of the area in construction is in Haramous (my neighborhood)! This residential area being built is less than a kilometer away from my house!

Post some more, and let's revive this thread of this unknown country.
Thanks

Djibouti and the Afar region of Ethiopia are located at the boundary between two tectonic plates, it's a region of volcanic activity.

It's pretty virgin country. Around 75% of the country's population lives in the capital city and there are not hundreds of thousands of tourists visiting, so it's pretty unspoiled. Djibouti has this particular look, beauty, though most of the land is desertic.

Yes, Pasha is one of the 2 casinos the country has. The other one is inside the Sheraton Hotel. This one is located within the Kempenski Hotel complex.

The clientele is basically the rich businessmen from the Gulf countries (they can drink and party "discreetly" in Djibouti as Djibouti is less conservative than the Gulf nations)

It's just during the last few years that the buildings of the old city are renovated. A lot of these buildings are more than 100 to 150 years old. And I love the architecture, it's quiet unique. Too sad there isn't much renovation work going on, some of the buildings are crumbling. While they continue building new areas, they seem to ignore to preserve the city's historic center and architectural heritage. Saddens me a lot.

The renovation of Djibouti's historical buildings were long overdue, IMO. And I'm liking the results too.

Thanks abesha,
Yes there is a mountainous region in the North where there are Djibouti's 3 forests ( Day, Mabla and Moussa Ali). It's really unspoiled and the weather's great compared to the south (where the capital is located).

In an article first published by the Djibouti triweekly newspaper La Nation, WFP's Fatma Samoura describes the agony of the Day forest, which contains 60 percent of Djibouti's wildlife and flora and fauna.

Thanks, well I guess that was the purpose of this thread, to help you discover our mysterious country, and looks like that's working, to my great satisfaction.

Actually Djibouti's landscape is mostly arid, desertic and volcanic but there are 3 forests (that are now National Parks) located in the Tadjourah and Obock regions of the North. Its much greener and cooler compared to the south where the capital is located.

There are camps where you can spend the night and I've been to Day forest only (the most popular) and really enjoyed it. The climate in summer is mild (around 25 degrees in the morning and much cooler during the night) where in the same time, Djibouti-city is roting under 45 degrees heat...

Adigaa mudan Xusein! How can you blame yourself for not being aware of this beautiful diversity when even most Djiboutians are unaware of it? They rather flock in their thousands in neighboring Ethiopia, Yemen and Somalia to escape the summer heat of the capital when the North of the country offers just what they are looking for in the neighboring countries.

Loool, when Lamu is inaugurated, we will play by the rules of competition...I really like the competition between our two countries in the transport area (ports), they're competing for that large Ethiopian market by modernizing and investing in infrastructures and that's good for both of our countries.
