OMG, Kiev looks awsome as always... When I saw that pic by Dr. Mesofius then I understood that Kiev is the third city after Moscow and Leningrad (or St. Petersburg) which I'd really like to visit one day because of their awsome commieblocks!

^^ Tallinn is not even come close to Kiev in terms of commieblocks. Well, those living in the upper floors of these blocks must be amongst the most urbanised people in Europe.

Kiev is still miles behind in terms of highrise residentials behind Hong Kong--- but Hong Kong does not have much more commieblocks in fact.

Buenos Aires ?

No. Kiev is even more impressive as the capital of Ukraine--- Ukraine has more population than Argentina.

Rusanivka in Kyiv. This area was built in 1970's exclusively of commieblocks. It was called by the communists something like model planning.

At least from what I heard (or maybe my impression) St Petersburg has had a building height limit to somewhere around 25 floors. Recently though alot of 30+ floor commies have been proposed/approved/or uc.

I agree, aren't commie blocks supposed to be those (mostly residential) tall and ugly buildings which appeared until 1990?

^^"classic" skyscrapers weren't that glassy either. Anyway commieblock is short for "communal block" (not communist) if I remember right so it doesn't really fit most of the buildings we're talking about here.

Anyway commieblock is short for "communal block" (not communist) if I remember right so it doesn't really fit most of the buildings we're talking about here.In fact I always thought that Commieblock would have meant Communist Block (of Flats), simply because that kind of buildings or, better, the biggest and highest ones are typical from Eastern Europe and they were built when communism was ruling those countries!

But as we can see such buildings are in massive quantity also in Madrid that it properly isn't a communist city as until 1975 was ruled by Francisco Franco!

By the way, I learnt a new thing!

^^Actually the tallest ones were probably in the UK, that's why they call them "tower blocks" in EE it was rare for such building to have more than 11 floors. There is nothing particularly "communist" about this type of housing although modernist planning on large scale was easier in centrally planned economies since private developers often push for higher density.

Sovietic standard block used to have 9 floors. In Hungary the standard is 11 floors.

The higher ones are located in Russia and Ukraine.

It would be interesting to find out what are the Top10 highest in every country. I obviously talk about the commies we know and the commies we maybe find out during Google Street View, NORC's Street View and Yandex Street View trips.
