View Full Version : Why so inactive?
Hanshin-Tigress July 31st, 2007, 08:29 AM 不活性
Why is our japan forum so inactive? I propose we start typing everything in japanese so that way when japanese search in google jp this site will come up and we will get more japanese forumers. Right now alot is in english(for others to understand) but i think information on buildings etc should be done exclusively in japanese to attempt to bring in more forumers.btw i typed this in english to see what other forumers think, because as of now most of our traffic are from non-japanese).
We need more update threads on buildings under construction too..
FML July 31st, 2007, 12:34 PM The reason is because the vast majority of Japanese, including me, are very poor at the devilish language called Engrishu. Compared with others, Japanese are not exactly known for their multilingual abilities.
So yeah, I agree that we could use Japanese more frequently on the forum, if not necessarily exclusive.
Then again, I guess most Japanese monolinguals don't really have a reason to use this forum, when they already have other places.
I don't really know. It may be good the way it is now, that we do have a few, yet knowledgeable posters, such as coldstar.
hkskyline July 31st, 2007, 03:18 PM Using Japanese more often here will drive away the international audience. Would making this section isolated be more helpful in keeping traffic?
SEED July 31st, 2007, 03:39 PM or maybe u guys can promote ur forum or somethin..like postin pics bout japan in the international forum etc.. i think is 'k for u guys to speak ur own language since this is a 日本forum.. at the same time i can learn some japanese! i hope u guys dont mind i hav a say in this..
Saudi guy July 31st, 2007, 03:53 PM i think you should open subforum that only for japanese language!!!

well alot of the chinese forum is done in only chinese
VicFontaine August 1st, 2007, 02:41 AM yeah its very sad that the forum of this nice country is so inactive :( if using japanese will make this better its ok to me, as long as I can see some more photos...!! :)
south August 1st, 2007, 03:35 AM so where do all the japanese-speaking skyscraper otaku hang out to talk about buildings? if anyone knows, please post some links here. maybe forumers with some language skills can practice translating the highlights and post them here.
Songoten2554 August 1st, 2007, 07:09 AM i am not japanese i am hispanic i am colombian american but i been wondering about this too why is it so quiet i thought people liked to talk about this here?
Blackraven August 1st, 2007, 10:01 AM Thing is, majority of the Japanese skyscraper/urbanist/modernist officionados are not knowledgeable of the English language. Thus, why they can't be seen in sites like SSC.
Thing is though, I wouldn't want this thread to go all Japanese. If that happens, this thread will lose its overseas forumer base (including me) because we don't know Japanese language.
So I guess, we can just include an all Japanese sub-forum within the thread.
But not leave out on either.
Sen August 1st, 2007, 12:56 PM coincidence or not, all the local forums with large traffic have most of their threads in native language, example->latin american forum, french forum, holland forum. Chinese forum saw its traffic surge after more chinese language threads appeared.
hkskyline August 1st, 2007, 01:46 PM Why do we need to restrict a section to mingle amongst our own kinds in an international forum?
Hanshin-Tigress August 1st, 2007, 07:00 PM I think alot of forumers(like me) find this site through google...so if we use more japanese maybe more japanese forumers will stumble upon this site..
Blackraven August 2nd, 2007, 05:50 PM The Hong Kong and Macau forums are 95% in English so the minority is 5% in Chinese text. Still, it has quite a number of threads.
Anyways, my point is that there can be a sub-forum for all Japanese language discussions.
However, I would disagree on turning the ENTIRE Japan forum (or even at least 50% of it) into a Japanese language forum. :ohno:
That I am against.
Momo1435 August 3rd, 2007, 06:24 PM Why do we need to restrict a section to mingle amongst our own kinds in an international forum?
SSC started from a Dutch speaking forum that went international, so it's only logical that there's a (completely) Dutch speaking section around here. That makes it also logical that others also want a part of the forum in their own language when there are enough people to join in. And if the projects are interesting enough there's always the international part.
Right now there are to many Japanese speaking around to make this part really Japanese. That's makes it difficult to keep threads going and it's also hard to get new Japanese speaking people come in via search engines. If you want to do it you should start with a few threads and see how that goes.
Or else you can always create a SSC on 2ch with for example links to picture threads here.
hkskyline August 3rd, 2007, 08:21 PM The difference is the Dutch participate in both their own section and the other broader international sections where different nationalities come together to discuss in English. Having a Japanese-only section will not promote more Japanese interaction with the rest of the world, but rather make this a domestic discussion board. Similarly, the interaction from the rest of the world will cease once English disappears in here.
Language is a barrier, but the focus in this section doesn't have to be all text. Photos is a great way to bring people together even if they speak different languages.
duskdawn August 4th, 2007, 04:04 AM I don't think there should be a big argue here about whether making more Japanese posts or not. You can post any topic in English or Japanese in the Japanese forum. It is your call. The more Japanese threads appear, the more chance there are new Japanese forumers joining. If you don't know the language or want to discuss in English then start the thread in English, and I don't think it will hurt anything either. Just let it be.
Manila-X August 6th, 2007, 06:40 AM Here's how I see it, in The Latin American forums, it's mostly Spanish. In The Philippine forums its a combination of English and Filipino. The Japan Forums can be a combination of English or Nihongo.
But why do they have to visit SSC when they have 2-Channel?
duskdawn August 6th, 2007, 06:42 AM But why do they have to visit SSC when they have 2-Channel?
The Chinese have www.skyscrapers.cn and we still visit here.
hkskyline August 6th, 2007, 09:24 AM Looking at how other sections shape their sections isn't the best way to gauge what Japanese and international forumers want to shape the Japan section. If the Japanese locals want to use this section to encourage discussion on domestic issues, then obviously more threads will pop up in Japanese. If the target is an international audience, then English should become more prevalent. That decision should be independent of how other forumers may wish to develop the other sections.

In SSC, there is the Latinscrapers section where the language is mostly Spanish. I sometimes lurk in there but never participate since I don't know Spanish. But alot of the Latin American forumers post in the world sections.
One thread I saw in this section is Japanese News. Its mostly in Japanese but most forumers hardly post in it.
I also have a feeling that only a small percentage of Japanese have interest in either skyscrapers and urbanity.
In all, I've seen alot of Japanese forumers participating in SSC both the local and world sections and that good :)

What happens in another section is irrelevant and should not be used as a model for everything else when in reality the forumers' cultural background and objectives for being in their section differ drastically from region to region. Slapping a what they're doing I'll do mentality is destined for failure.
Ultimately, it's up to the participants in here to decide what to do with the theme and types of posts that appear.
The Japanese are extremely efficient land usage designers, and can contribute significantly to the urban planning field. That is not so evident from the content in here but easy to see for those with a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. Language is a huge barrier, which is why in order to promote this understanding, using English as a common language is key or else . It'll be the international audience's loss if everything turned Japanese.
Hanshin-Tigress August 6th, 2007, 08:36 PM so does anyone have any ideas on how to make this forum more active?
Vapour August 7th, 2007, 04:18 PM ^What about a tell-a-joke contest? :colgate:
The Japan forum has always been a laidback place, unlike others with too much spam and chit chat. I like it this way, but I guess some more activity is welcome. Who's the first to tell a joke?
SEED August 8th, 2007, 03:11 PM ^^ would lov to hear some Japanese jokes! how bout showing more of life in Japan! like food thread, fashion thread, gadgets thread etc.. etc..
Utamaro August 10th, 2007, 12:44 PM so where do all the japanese-speaking skyscraper otaku hang out to talk about buildings?
Japanese people use anonymous forum like 2channel, futaba channel, shitaraba. 2ch and shitaraba have some skyscraper, architecture and citytalk boad.
coldstar August 10th, 2007, 01:23 PM Yes, but skyscraper threads of these forums are relatively dead these days.
One thing for sure Japanese are generally not interested in high-rise buildings regrettably.
Great majority of Japanese might be called as 'anti-high rises' instead. They like discussing Japanese cities, architecture and transportation, but tend to despise skyscrapers. Anti- high rise radicals (many of them are commies and environmentalists) always interfere with the talks of skyscrapers and destruct and kill the entire thread. In this way, lots of the good skyscraper threads of huge 2ch, for example, were dead.
alvi August 12th, 2007, 11:35 AM Don't know any in Nihongo, but a couple in English which even my Japanese speaking friends can understand:
Have you heard about the Japanese snake?
Went on a diet.
She was too hebi.
Japanese go into home delivery, demae, a lot.
If the postman brings the mail and the milkman delivers the milk, who supplies the soy sauce?
The kikkoman!
alvi.

FML August 12th, 2007, 05:48 PM They are not my jokes, but I'd like to share my favorite comedy skits from 90s.
Gorenjai Series (http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=hjWW2OB2iI0), a parody of Goranger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Himitsu_Sentai_Goranger) (The root of Power Rangers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Rangers)). Episode 4 and 5 are my favorites.
Eccentric Shonen Boy (http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=D1PDLy9Nyg0), a parody of tokusatsu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokusatsu) hero theme song.
My current favorite comedy program is How Do You Like Wednesday? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_do_you_like_Wednesday%3F), but I don't think any episodes are subtitled at all.
On a completely unrelated note, if you can bare with Akiba-kei anime fanboy geekness, you can check out my secret fan site (http://www.mukiryoku.com/tomosensei.html) of Tomoko Kaneda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomoko_Kaneda) - the cleverest anime voice actress in history.

Grams August 29th, 2007, 01:51 PM A joke I found on internet:colgate:
The term exam of the English study introduction in University of Washington. Because this class had had as many as 800 students, it was the one to shake off the student with a new this examination as well as a lot of other subjects of the first grader. The examinations were two hours, and the problem form was distributed.
The professor was a very severe person, and students were told not to receive, and to fall therefore in the examination if it would not submit it on this desk in exactly two hours. It ran in as the examination started and one student would pant in 30 minutes, and it was told to give the problem form to the professor.
"The time that had been done to the last minute slept though did not
think it was" and the professor said while passing the form.
"It is possible to say, and do. "
When the student answered, it began to do about the seat.
Students handed in papers in rows, and went out when the professor would declare the end
of the examination in two hours. Nothing but one late student kept remaining back, and it
writing. The student came to the professor who had been preparing the following class
being sit at the desk in 30 minutes. He tried to put his examination paper on the answer
sheet piled up on the desk.
「Uselessness and uselessness. ..dependence.. . that cannot be
receivedIt is already a time slice. 」
The student is dew as for distrust and anger.
"Does the teacher know who I am?"
It answered in "Sleep that did not know who it was as soon as good"
and a sarcastic tone.
The student heard it again , saying that "Knew who I was is there a
teacher?".
「Sleep doesn't know. It might be unrelated. 」The professor answered
in a coercive tone.
When the student answers, "Understood" ……
The mountain of the answer sheet was quickly lifted, my answer sheet was inserted quickly
in that, and it went out of the classroom.

Giott August 31st, 2007, 01:36 PM In my opinion u should write in your language and attract more ppl from Japan. U have so many ppl in your country something about 127 milions?
Abd so few ppl are posting here. I really want to see japan's architecture old and new , new projects old projects your temples and other . But 80% of posts here are about something else this is a skyscraper forum :poke:
Look at Polish forum about 40 milions ppl in this nation there and probably the biggest section on skyscraper forum and every topic about archtecture. And its not in english but polish language but even so many ppl that dont know this language are "reading" it.
So reorginize japanese friends and give me photos of ur country architecture
