Home of FC Basel. Until recently it was somewhat of a fortress for them.

I've always been interested by this stadium. It's holds 42,000 (when it's expansion for Euro 2008 is finished), it was designed by Herzog & De Meuron (you'll notice the lighting from the Allianz Arena in Munich, the idea was started with St. Jakob).

What interests me about it is the inclusion of solar panels on the roof. I thought it was a good use of space and I don't understand why more stadiums don't do this. Does anyone know?

Guessing wildly, I'd say it probably comes down to weight. Per square metre, I'd imagine a solar panel, when you include all the other parts that make it work, would weigh more than other roofing materials, meaning more expensive construction of roof supports and whatnot.

I like most of this stadium but I really dislike those lights. It makes it look like the sort of weird, trippy ideas TV producers have about what discos looked like in the 70s.

St. Jakob Park extension is completed already.
Letzigrund, Zurich's Euro08 Stadium also has Solar Panels on it's roof.

Many stadiums have solar panels on the roof these days.
However its mostly the small to medium sized grounds.

Here are some pics of the St.Jakobs park

Does anyone know what they are building on the left hand side?

Hmm, very 'Austin Powers'.

I presume the solar panels are a defence measure against the environmentalists who would be aghast at the power wasted in fuelling the semi-pointless light show on the exterior...

I like the idea behind the lights, but it wasn't pulled off right in Basel, it's cool in Munich though.

Nice pictures Checker!! To your question:

The buildings on the left side belongs to the expansion of the St. Jakob Park with an additional Tower (St. Jakob Turm 70m high) and expansion of the shopping center.
Further details you can find here

Concerning the solar roof: if I'm not mistaken it was put on St.Jakob only recently with the extension (3rd tier, new roof).

Stade de Suisse Wankdorf in Bern (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=14345668#post14345668), another Euro 2008 stadium, has a much bigger solar power plant and had it from the very beginning. It's the world's biggest solar power plant integrated in a stadium. It's run by the local energy company BKW Energie. In its first year of operation, it produced more than 700'000 kWh and was awarded with the European Solar Award 2005. Because of the big demand for solar power by local clients, BKW is expanding the power plant by 50% - this expansion will be finished this summer.

The solar energy is not produced directly for the stadium, but for any clients who are willing to pay a little bit more for environmentally sound energy. To use the stadium roof for it is just a good way of using built space that otherwise wouldn't be used productively for anything else.

There is a futuristic public solar information center on the roof of the stadium:

shame it has the pillars on the third tier

There's actually pillars the whole way around. Just they block more views in the 3rd tier than the second tier on the other sides:

The new bit is horribly integrated and dated by the pillars.

It looked great beforehand.

Fantastic stadium! Seats seem like quite a luxury. They are my real favorite. I wish other European stadiums have that kind of seats in the future.

I think Allianz has got the same one
IMO they are just normal seats. Just with a different design (fat :D )

42000..it was 38 before the expansion.

42,500 was for the EURO as i know
later it was / will be reduced to 38,500.
Before, without the 3rd tier, it was 33,000

According to the stadionwelt magazine the distance between the seats was reduced. (+ 2,000 seats)

August 27th, 2008, 02:55 PM
And theyll increase it again?
And why will it go down to 38k then instead of 40?

I don’t think that will happen the capacity was 38,500 seats originally according to a few sources that I have looked at and from the pics of the outside that stands structure looks pretty permanent to me.
I found this on the Basel United webpage which is the company that manages the stadium and unfortunately I don't speak German so can't understand what is says, but all the same for anyone who can translate it and/or speaks German here is what is said.

Here is the link to the webpage were I found this info and what clearly is a load of other facts about the stadium.http://www.baselunited.ch/default.aspx?group=sjp&code=0905

It says that the stadium "will" have 42,5k during the Euro whereas theyll reduce the cap afterwards to 38,5k by increasing the distance between the seats... :( :bash:
Impressive how much the cap can vary by these simple means. Old Trafford springs to mind here.

i think nowadys 2,5cm between each seat is "standard" "normal".
But in some Bernabeu pics or Nou camp pics it looks like there is nor space between the seats

40`000 seats was temporary for the Euro, temporary compression of the seats to 40`000, now again back to 38`5000 seats for the usual competitions, swiss national league, Champions league.
