This thread has pictures of Punta del Este, one of the most well-known tourist places in beautiful Uruguay. Punta is visited by millions of tourists annually. It’s often called Southern Miami or The Southern Pearl. Punta del Este, is 140 kms from the capital city of Uruguay

In first place, this is a thread somewhat different, because it wasn’t made only by my self, it was made along with the user Parlanchin and Ilignelli.
It’s little bit heavy, but please let it load, truly, it took a lot of work, it was planned many days ago and it’s really worth seeing it.
Enjoy Punta del Este with all it’s splendor.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x244/ilignelli_1990/puntaaeriak.jpg

The red zone, is the oceanfront zone and where most of the towers are, which doesn’t mean that there’s no towers in other zones, it’s the densest zone, where you would find at least 3 or 4 towers per square, except in the south part of the peninsula. The red zone is the one we are going to see in the pictures. The green zone, it’s a residential zone, of mansions, and some towers, too, however, the dominant view is mansions and pine trees (you will see this zone in another thread, not today). Finally, the yellow zone, La Barra, a beautiful place, where you will find plenty of clubs. A wonderful site.

Nice to have someone from South America here showing us your country!:)

Punta del Este looks nice, it could be somewhere in Austalia.

Are rents costly there, I am asking you this because Uruguay is a pretty wealthy country by regional standards?

How many kilometres is Punta del Esate from Montevideo?

Amazing, Uruguay is better than most Eastern European countries and on par with developped countries like New Zealand or Portugal. What was the secret of Uruguay´s economic success story? Weren´t you hard hit when Argentina went broke in the late 90´s.??

Where are you from?

Half-Nigerian and Half European. Why do you ask?

Can i ask you what do urguyans earn on average, let´s say someone who works in the field of marketing, as an architect, a psychologists, a lawyer, a teacher or a doctor? Do student easily find a job after graduation?

Yes, uruguay had crisis, mostly recent in 2002 influenced by argentinian crisis oof 2000, but, we are a small country, only 3.000.000 million inh. and 175.000sq kilom.
Uruguay, went out of crisis fast and now growing up.
After graduation, is not very easy, is not so difficult, depends your age and capacity, etc, but is same for man or woman
The earn, depends, public or private sector, and your type of work. Uruguayan average is, 500-600 U.S. dollar month, but, the food in comparation with US, Europe, is so cheap, for exmple, milk, 0,30 dollars- Pasta 1 dollar- bread, 0,20, etc.
The energy (electric) monthly 50 dollars
water, monthly, 10-15 dollars.
If you want to know ask....bye..thx for interesting

Thanks for your comments guys! I helped Ilignelli with this thread and you guys are making us fell at home!!! In response to the question, the 600 dollars average salary is when we talk about average jobs, but if you are a lawyer you would probably earn more than that, however, it all depends on your capacity and job field as Ilignelli explained before. Another thing, you can get an apartment in Punta for about 1,500 dollars per square meter (rent or buy), according to what you are willing to spend and want, of course. Again, thanks for your comments and don't take long to post in the South American Forum, as well.

$1,500 for a square meter rent is kinda steep for a $600 monthly salary, don't y'all think so?

August 6th, 2007, 08:07 AM
You are totally right, and that's not the most expensive; however, Punta del Este is almost 100% a turist city, so, a middle class uruguayan, which is who earns around 450 - 900 dollars monthly wouldn't live in Punta del Este, most likely. If you go to Montevideo for example, prices are not so expensive and you have more options. Also, from December thru February, rent prices in Punta go up. Let's put it this way, think of Punta del Este as Beverly Hills, California... Was my explanation clear enough?

The following pictures are NOT FORM PUNTA DEL ESTE. Atlantida and Piriapolis, located between Montevideo and Punta del Este. This are the common vacation places for uruguayans. Since more than half of the population lives in Montevideo, when we go on vacations we don't want to spend it on busy cities like Punta del Este, we appreciate peace and nature, althoug Punta is very natural, too. Here you find all what you need, peace, comfort, rest or night life and movement too, however, is not the same as Punta del Este as I explained before. Also, prices are lower than those you can find in Punta during the summer. Imagine Atlantida or Piriapolis with a totally blue sky and a radiant sun, with people playing in the beach, birds flying all over and the always present fishers.

PIRIAPOLIS (100kms east Montevideo , by the same highway to Punta del Este)

Well, living costs are really low:) but wages are not attractive:ohno: !
What does a doctor or a lawyer earn? Just 500-600 US dollars or more than that?
Are schools and univeristies free of charge in Uruguay? If not what do they cost approximately?

PS: the new pics you added you nice, too.

The salaries between Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil really aren't that different, but Uruguay and Argentina are so much cheaper. Thats why many Brazilians from Rio Grande do Sul come to shop in Uruguay.

But if you look Uruguyans will live comfortably, even during the economic crisis people always ate well.

I think you should go to www.worldbank.org to get more accurate statistcis... The highest GDP en Latinamerica is 8000$ (aprox.), held by Mexico... In this side of the world we use to inflate our economics facts:lol:

He is right, I logged on to this forum to see African pictures, not S. American ones! If I wanted to see SA pictures I would simply go to the Latin forums and browse there! I have no interest in seeing Latin pictures on a African board!

Oh by the way, how do ya'll treat those who are of African descent? Is there a visiable Black middle class in your country, or are they stacked in favelas/slums like in Brazil, Columbia, etc?? Do ya'll openly discriminate against those of African descent in housing, employment, television, etc like in every other Latin Country? I am well aware of the treatment of Blacks in the Portuguese/Spanish society which is far worst IMO than a ENglish former colony. So is it the same here or not?

uruguay is one of the few countries in latin America that is in fact primarily white-94%, to be exact. There aren't a whole lot of blacks there(about 4% of the population), and you rarely hear about afro-uruguayans. I'd venture to say that they aren't all that visible overall.

Hold up, Afro Brazilians are the most intergrated Afro group than any other Latin American country, with the exception of Cuba which is Communist. Favelas are quite multi racial. More importantly in many Latin nations their has been centuries of mixtures that very few people actually identitfy themselves with a racial group. Interracial marriages, couples, families more so than any other part of the world.

I think you should go to www.worldbank.org to get more accurate statistcis... The highest GDP en Latinamerica is 8000$ (aprox.), held by Mexico... In this side of the world we use to inflate our economics facts:lol:

Uruguay, Argentina and Chile all have higher GDP percapita's than Mexico. Mexico's GDP is actually higher than 10,000$, while Argentina's is over 15,000.

But what is the main driver of Uruguyan economic success? What are their main export goods?

Well, living costs are really low:) but wages are not attractive:ohno: !
What does a doctor or a lawyer earn? Just 500-600 US dollars or more than that?
Are schools and univeristies free of charge in Uruguay? If not what do they cost approximately?

PS: the new pics you added you nice, too.

Looking forward to more:)

500-600 dollars monthly is what a middle class uruguayan earns and it goes up to 900 or 1.000 monthly in many cases. I.m not sure how much a lawyer earns but i'm sure it.s MUCH MUCH more than that, as I said, that's the middle class average salary.

Although we don't have many Afro-Uruguayans, about 4 or 5 percent, a big part of our music, national music (candombe) comes from Africa and we love it, it runs through our vains lol.

Discrimination is very rare in Uruguay, if we call an afro-uruguayan "Negro" (in spanish) we don't mean to be racist, it's just a friendly way to call that person or nick name them and of course he or she won't get upset or anything like that,. In fact, about 11 months ago, four nigerians arrived to the uruguayan coast after being throwed out of a fishing ship, and in a television interview they said that discrimination in Uruguay was very low. However, you have exceptions like everywhere...

Igninelli1990,

First of all thanks for uploading the Montevideo pics here. Montevideo looks appealing to me. Unfortunately, seldom anything is heard about Uruguay but it is really "la Suiza de America Lantina" (from what I can see).
It is very good that university is free which points to the fact that the state has an interest in promoting even young people emerging from less affluent segments of Uruguyan population. Bravo!

I have watched the old video of Montevideo, pretty developed urban centre for the 30´s , what has become of the old tramway, is it still running or is it out of service?

Because it's little, peaceful, and developed-and someday, somebody may very well decide to take advantage of that. Sometimes the best way to maintain that peacefulness is to have a well prepared defence force-this way, no matter what, nobody is going to think you a pushover and attack you.

when there is no military, people begin to take you for a pushover, and they'll start causing trouble.

With all respect for Uruguay. It is a beautiful country and thanks for the pictures. But Uruguay has a lot of slums/shantytowns and poverty. I know people from Holland who went there and told me that a lot of people have to struggle to survive and that there is a very big difference between the rich and the poor...

It has a long way to go. It is not yet the Switserland of America...

ilignelli_1990
August 18th, 2007, 08:44 PM
is no yet switzerland if u wanna, but in latin america, in one of the best for live...also, the indigency percentage is less 2%, but, there are poor people, yes, but can survive, difficult, but they can...uruguay's idh is 0.851...if you compare uruguay with netherlands, yes, is a poor country, is not firts world, but, is one of third world, with chile, that can get develop before another countries like paraguay or bolivia. Uruguay and Chile, are the "developed" countries in Latin America...
Thanks for posting...

!!!!!?????

I didnt think blacks in Brazil were any more integrated than Colombia, Venezuela or the Central American countries I have been to. As equally marginalised pretty much everywhere.

By FAR the most integrated were the blacks in Costa Rica.

Incorrect, in Colombia and Venezuela their probably the most marginalized in all of Latin America. If you go to Afro regions like Choco, you'd be forgiven if you thought you were in the Congo. Their is very little mixture with people looking pure African. Regions along the coste are very homogenous and very African looking. Brazil's North East is 70%+ of Afro descendents but people come in all shades and shapes.

Now Central America is a HORRID example of Black or indigenous integration. THe social stature of a tiny white elite and a poor colored class is personified in Countries like Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvadore and Honduras. Costa Rica is considerably more stable, but lets not forget that only 3% in a nation with 4 million people are black.

The most integrated country is without a shadow of doubt Cuba. Communism plays a role, but similiar to Brazil it has a large black segment of the population mix with mestizo and white. Look at the Cuban parliament and see how many black faces their are. Problem is both black, white and brown Cubans are desperately poor.

Brazilian integration comes in the form that past Afro cultural practices have evolved to becoming soley Brazilian. Where did Samba come from? Capoeira? Feijoada? All from black slaves in Angola, but its been mixed in and seen as Brazilian not African.

You would also have trouble finding me a nation that has had more racial mixing than Brazil, the fusions of different cultures is what makes us a great country. Now economically speaking colored people in Brazil do form most of the poor underclass and whites represent most of the upper classes. However income inequality is falling dramatically and many poor people are joining the middle class. The vast majority of these people are mullato/black.

Brazil is by far the most tolerant country in the world regarding races, MUCH MORE than the US and SA (needless to say). In fact, there is prejudice in Brazil, but that is towards the low class people, including whites. Of course racism exists, but in very small levels compared to the USA, for instance. Probably there is more prejudice against native-brazilians (less than 1% of the population) than blacks (40%)... I have black friends (not many, because historically blacks have been on the base of the social pyramid... I am considered upple-middle class and I admit that in my class there are not so many blacks, but that is starting to change.. I also dated black girls...)

The thing about Uruguay is that the country has 95% of its population being white.. blacks amount to a few per cent only... is like being white in Zimbabwe... Furthermore, the population is in its majority descendant of Italians and Spaniards (80%), countries known for their ignorance regarding race and their intolerance... There are some British and German as well... For instance, the best hospitals in the country are the British Hospital of Montevideo and the Spanish Clinic...
