Quite possible...with the current corruption crackdown I doubt he would have been able to carry the amount of money needed to pay several dozen individuals...it would have aroused suspicion...

I have around 700 Dhaka and Sylhet photos from this trip. Many are duplicates and I must sort them all out before posting them. The weather was horrible most of the time. It was raining a lot and it made it difficult to take photos.

Well China has its Great Wall, but we have the Great Wall of Banani! Sure, their one is a little longer, but ours is taller!:nocrook:

Seriously though...the wall to wall construction does not represent any form of planning...just sky high land prices in Dhaka and developers' desire milk every square inch of their property, particularly in pricier areas of the city like Banani.

I had 3 wonderful weeks in Dhaka. Dhaka has changed a lot. Major constructions are everywhere. The traffic is horrible. Absolutely horrible. I din't get to take too many Motijheel photos. I have plenty of Gulshan, Banani, Mohakhali and Uttara photos. I have a decent number of Dhanmondi photos as well. Rampura, Biswa road is developing nicely. I had the good fortune of being able to take a few Apollo, United and Sqaure Hospital photos. I saw the under construction Ahsania cancer hospital. It is massive. When finished it should be the largest hospital in the country. Ashulia road has so many malls, hospitals, universities under construction. The entire Gulshan avenue has nice shopping and fast food places everywhere. I took a lot of photos of the under construction projects. It will take a little bit of time for me to post them here. I hope you guys are enjoying the photos so far.

I visited SYlhet only for a day. Unfortunately I wasn't able to visit Zindabazar (main commercial zone) but I was able to take some nice building photos. I spent the night at the Sylhet Circuit House. It was like a 5 star hotel right by the Kean Bridge and the Surma river. Very nice!

Well I am back :) I told you about the internet service problem.

Nikunja is becoming a commercial center in Dhaka. AT this moment it has 3 15 storied (Nitol Niloy Tower, Lotus Kamal Tower and Dhaka Regency Hotel) and another low rise called Mannan Plaza. There are currently two buildings under construction. One of them is the Dhaka Stock Exchange Tower. Once the other two are completed Nikunja will have a decent skyline of low rise buildings.

We live an exciting time...the city will always be changing. The pace of change was much slower in the past, and again in the future, when the country is developed, will likely slow down again. But for now...full speed ahead! Tmac, even though I won't be saying "Thanks for pics!" for all of your next few hundred posts, we are of course thankful to you for all the time you spend on all this.

Some are hotels, most are offices. Dhaka hasn't seen a skyscraper condo boom yet though I am sure that is coming sooner or later like other Asian cities and some North American cities.

Anyway, though I 've never been inside Regency Hotel yet, but I belive I saw something like small shops on the ground floor beside the small entrance they made while I was passing by. Shouldnt they get rid of those? You dont expect those in the ground floor of a decent hotel.

Another thing that I got into my head while enjoying these great pictures, I was wondering how lucky you were to get such a sunny day which has been very rarely seen last few weeks! loved the reflection of the sky on the glass facade of Regency...Rain decided to 've some rest for a few days on the day before yesterday... so those hot, sunny, humid days are back in Dhaka.

^^ you can get tickets for a lot of airlines in dhaka that actually don't even fly close to dhaka. people buy them to fly from a third country. like...if ur flying etihad to toronto and need to get to vancouver from there...

Tmac, how did you recharge your camera battery while in Bangladesh? This is a problem I had when I went there...my battery ran out. I hadn't brought my recharger since it wouldn't work on a BD socket.

I brought an adapter with me which had matching pins to those they use in BD. It allowed me to plug it into BD outlet and then plug my charger to that convertor.

I have several relatives who work in United and Apollo hospitals. I was told United management is not that good. Apollo however is the best managed and run hospital in Dhaka.

I wonder why central air conditioning doesn't seem to have made it to many of the office buildings? From an aesthetic standpoint at least, all those individual AC units clutter the facades of their respective buildings...but from a practical standpoint also, I would think a central unit would be easier to manage. I guess expense is the reason for the preference for individual units...maybe someone more knowledgeable can shed some light.

Nice find! So good to see not everyone is building a generic blue-glass facade! This is definitely a new construction, not an old one...a few more these would help make Dhaka a more classy looking place.

Although I was staying near there on my trip to BD earlier this year, I didn't take too many pics mainly because there were other matters weighing on my mind at the time. Next time I go back...which unfortunately probably won't be until winter 2008 (at the earliest)...I promise to make up for that with a nice Motijheel shoot.

That's the first pic of Sonargaon extension I have seen - very impressive! However the renovation of the hotel is in disarray since the renovator fell afoul of the corruption crackdown. I am not sure man. There are many BFC outlets throughout the city. I have never tried them. I think I tried Dominous last time and I don't remember if I liked it or not.

^^ I wish they could come up with a good name of their own instead of just trying to ape some western brand. "BFC" is OK since it actually means something...but "Dominous" is probably just an attempt to sound like "Domino's Pizza" (which is chain here in the US). The word "Dominous" doesn't mean anything and isn't anyone's name...so it just ends up sounding silly.

Yes, I've been thinking the same since I saw it first time. Its a pathetic attempt by those Dominous people, I dont like the food they serve either. BFC is okay, the food they serve is okay too.

I hope work on Doorin (Doreen?) restarts soon...Circle-2 will look so much better once that is finished. At least City Center and Jamuna Future Park managed to progress despite the problems of their owners.

the sign attached to the building says "Doreen Tower". No clue as to when the building would be finished. Siddiqui Group is building the tower.

A Daily Star report published on June 11, 2007 claims the building would open next year.
