But on another note, it's a pity that such a large-scale project has gone from the drawing board to the actual construction so quickly, while the new Anfield has been (and still is) in limbo for the past decade :S

I'm very impressed with the pace of the project - especially over Christmas. This being Spain, is it possible that the height of summer may be more likely to slow down the progress?

I presume the digging down is to provide a few levels of underground parking - which an urban location would require more than if the ground had been located on the edge of town.

Like many projects featured on SSC before, the regular and frequent photo updates of this build make it an interesting and fascinating thread. I look forward to the next set of pictures!

Thanks, guys...

Very nice! I can't match the accolade of "best" or "coolest" as others have, but it is certainly top tier and arguably among the best for the money and, likely, among the fastest completed. It'll be nice to see La Liga have another large, high-quality facility. Congrats!

BTW, has this helped the team with their attendance figures this year? I wonder if people are buying season tickets to be in line for orders when the new digs open, and to say goodbye to the old stadium.

I am neither, only interested in aesthetics and this stadium is superior in beauty than Wembley the Allianz and the drawings for the new Liverpool stadium. It might be hard for you to accept this coming from someone with no natural bias accept that of aesthetics but at the end of the day, who cares. If you can't accept that basic fact, life becomes very complicated.

Today has been announced that Valencia C.F. will build a 20-storey 5 stars hotel in the same plot, the project is being studied by Mark Fenwick, the architect od the stadium.

Here is a render of the volume of the hotel.

And here, some renders of Mark Fenwick's design for Hercules Stadium in Alicante (it is not Valencia's one although they are quite similar)... with a hotel too.

What do you find about this design that is so superior to Allianz, etc.? Especially if you're talking about aesthetics then I find it hard for you to call something bad. Either you like it or don't, but you can't measure personal aesthetic appeal as either good or bad, let alone "like shit."

You can, perhaps it is the 'like shit' comment that offends your political correctness, but either way you sound like a computer crashing. For me, this stadium is superior aesthetically to the three other stadiums I mentioned. I am allowed to do this and believe passionately in it. What exactly is your malfunction with my statement? You want me to explain why the new Wembley was so bland they had to add a crane like structure in the shape of an arch to at least add some sort of character? Would you like to know why the Allianz which looks like someone has broken a lava lamp over a tire is not beautiful to me? The Liverpool stadium I will not even start on as there is so much unattractive about it imo.

Now this Valencia stadium IMO is a beautiful piece of design. Original, modern, sleek, I love its name across the side - very Catalan/Valenciano to advertise like this, it is more than a stadium for football. It is a beautiful structure that reminds us of firstly the huge architectural heritage of Valencia and indeed all the Costa Brava, the love of football of this community, the attention to detail and finally the natural beauty of the actual design. Now a politically correct person would simply say - 'I think, the new Liverpool stadium ect perhaps got it wrong when you compare it to the new Valencia stadium.' Me, considering the money, boastful nature of these previous stadium - plus how ugly they all look, I myself, not politically correct - not at a dinner party with ambassadors, but on an internet forum can simply say - 'they will be made to look like shit when the new Valencia stadium is finished.' And I stand by that.

Pardon me for trying to figure out what you're basing your opinion on. :ohno: I was simply looking for a qualifier as to what you saw in this stadium that not only was to your liking but in turn put the others to shame. Such reasoning sounds like inherent bias rather than architectural criticism. I agree the arch at Wembley is contrite, but my opinion of Wembley is based on Wembley, not the Mastella. And seeing as I find the Mastella less than original or dynamic I wanted to learn if there was something more that I was missing. I guess on one level I didn't get the response I'd hoped for, but on another I found what I was looking for. Thanks for, um, discussing.

Good for you, I however am able to compare stadia. I compared you to a computer as a joke, now I see I was actually skirting around the reality of your binary mind. I am also able to compare stadiums, I did. You first told me I cannot compare them on Aesthetics () - I proved I could. I stated - only briefly why I do not like these stadia as I already sensed your mind was in overload when telling me I could not compare the aesthetics in the first place. Now you come back with bias? :)

I don't like arguing with broken Macs - man - reboot and then perhaps download a programme that explains that humans are capable of making choices on aesthetics and then - even comparing the results without being bias, in a swimming pool or any other stupid excuse your corrupted binary tries to resolve the obvious with.

If none of this works, you may have caught a virus, try this (http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/premium_services/premium_virus.jsp). Only when I am sure your harddrive is clean will I engage you with more details about how unimaginative 'The Home of Football' is if you wish to discuss further.

Again, Well done to the Valencianos showing us their true style. :):)

Nationalistic? That is the love of one country. Which country am I nationalistic for? Please show me and feel free to quote my past posts. i think you will find it is more than one unfortunately for your nationalist argument. But feel free to ignore my 'bias' post on aesthetics of stadia - its only fair, whenever i smell someone politically correct like yourself, i throw up in my mouth a little.

:) I never said you couldn't compare aesthetics. I simply wanted to better understand how the aesthetics of one stadium made the other look bad. Didn't mean for it to be a painful exercise and the bias comment was simply a guess based on what was left me. Surely if my mind was as binary as you're presuming I wouldn't have bothered trying to learn about another random human's opinions on aesthetics, now would I?

You should stick with more stuff like this:
I love its name across the side - very Catalan/Valenciano to advertise like this, it is more than a stadium for football. It is a beautiful structure that reminds us of firstly the huge architectural heritage of Valencia and indeed all the Costa BravaThanks at least for this constructive reference as it made me research such cultural aspects. May the end result bring you as much joy as the renderings.

Meanwhile, I'll go "reboot."

Stunning, a beautiful design and excellent work rate on top of that.
Will be incredible when it is done. This stadium will make the Allianz, New Liverpool Stadium and even Wembley look like shit.

Well done to the Valencianos for this amazing project.

while i respect your opinion.I too like this stadium very nice design,But i must disagree with the like Sh** comment i'm english yes and i've been to new wembley and i have to say pics do not do it justice it is an amazing place the sheer scale is mind blowing the facillities are absolutly top notch and the atmosphere inside when full is amazing plus i imagine the allianz would be the same to a point but can't say more as i haven't been as for the new liverpool fc stadium design i wouldn't say it's sh** but i certainly don't think it fits in with english stadia it's too american.Back to the nou mestalla yes maybe the design looks nicer from an outside view perspective that i agree but to judge anything you actually have to be there to judge it better.Just my opinion.

I stayed in that Novotel in 2004 i think, and remember thinking what the hell is all that space over the road. Has this site been palnned for years? Come to think of it there was a lot of empty space in Valencia - are they planning to build over all the grassy fields around this area?

Are they upgrading the metro station there cos from what i remember it was pretty small.

Also done up that roundabout too!

Yes, of course this has been planned. There was projected to build a sport facility in that area since 1987. All the neighbourhood is being built since 1999, there was just weeds until then and the main road, nowadays a fantastic boulevard. The sculpture in the roundabout was finished in January 2007.

Thera are not grassy fields already, all of them have finished buildings or in progress.

What is it going on in selling out the site for the current stadium? I heard in Korean football commuity that they are having troubles with it because of the recent bubble burst of real estate in Spain...Yeah, it's not the best moment at all for selling a site since the real state boom is over and prices are starting to fall. Many real state companies are having hard times amd not many people dare to make such a big investments.

Valencia planned to sell the 5 plots in the old Mestalla for €400 million and erase his current debt of nearly €270 million. However, Valencia's largest shareholder had to buy the first plot by himself because no company accepted to pay the €90 million the club wanted. It seems nobody will pay that price for the other 4 pots and Valencia need money to pay the new stadium.

Hope everything get solved asap, cause I can't wait to see Nou Mestalla finished.

Two killed in Valencia stadium construction collapse

Both the fatalities are South American workers.

Two workers have been killed and two more injured in an accident at the construction of the new Mestalla stadium for Valencia football club. Part of a scaffolding around one of the new pillars for the stadium collapsed leading one man to fall a distance of 12 metres. The other fatality was underneath the collapsing structure which had an estimated weight of 3000 kilos, and firemen rescued a third worker who had become trapped in the collapse.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 11am this morning. Around 50 of the other workers at the site helped out in the rescue operation.

The two dead are both South American workers, named as 38 year old Luis Medano Sinchuguano Toapanda and 24 year old Nelso Rocha. The most seriously hurt man is Spanish, Enrique Pradas Franco.

A statement from the architect of the stadium, Alejandro Escribano, is expected later. Work on the new stadium started on August 1 and the 75,000 seater was to have been completed for the 2009-10 season.

The bat ("Lo Rat Penat" in Valencian) is the emblem of the city, and is present in various buildings, and is also the emblem of various sports associations of the city:

Levante has gone down to Segunda, so it's a great pity that we cannot see a bat derby for sometime...

i cant believe valencia nearly got relegated last season a club that size would never finish outside the top 10 in england i guess thats why the spanish league is more exciting.
i read that valencia has a debt value of something like £100+ million how is the money situation at valencia i can imagine missing out on the champions league will have a big effect and with this new stadium being built im guessing money is tight will valencia have to sell some of their star players to level the books?

Brilliant stadium. I hope Valencia does well so I can catch them (and this venue) on television.

The bat is great, outlining one in the seats is very cool.

i like orange stand out and it has been proven that it spreads better to so it would make the stands look bigger but hopefully you wont see the seats as the stands will be full.

well they averaged 40,711 last season which was an increase of 0.8% on the previous season. In Spain teams dont fill up their stadiums every game there are a number of reasons for this but im not quite sure were to start. My guess would be that their attendances would fall a little but nothing major just probably to something between 36-40,000 and that when they move into nou mestalla that attendances will rise to around 55-60,000 but thats a guess from someone who lives in england so dont take that for sure.

lpioe
June 24th, 2008, 03:24 PM
A big reason is also that in Spain the average season ticket holder doesn't attend every game. Season tickets are much cheaper than buying a single ticket in every game.
Valencia for example has far more than 40'000 ST-holders and a long waiting list.

VLC08
June 25th, 2008, 02:26 AM
45.000 ST-holders, and 15.000 in waiting list

lpioe
June 25th, 2008, 02:08 PM
Considering new stadiums attracts more people (especially if its as spectacular as this one) they could probably sell 70k+ tickets to season ticket holders alone.

Both of those two colour combinations are great i didn't expect to like a multi coloured stadium. Dunno if any of you see this but with the change in colours and correct me if I’m wrong but the stadium is Allianz Arena right? For me with those two colour combinations instead of the dull boring grey it looks bigger to me.

Hi guys, i think about the attendance, that there are many points to think that with new stadium we will get an acceptable attendance average.
I think too, probably this stadium will be bigger than we need for 5/10 years, but cant forget that this is a project for the next 100 years at least. Valencia is growing very fast, and is necessary to think about the future.

And now, thers a waiting list about 15.000 people, and with future capacity the club will can do many promotions for example at schools etc..

More and more, last year we'd have a bad season, but new coach has get an extraordinay motivation for players and suporters, so i think we can get about 60.000/65.000 holders for the next two years, wich allows "only" 10.000/15.000 seats to sell each game.

Whether or not for you to see a stadum filled with spectators in Spain is not a matter of whether or not for tickets to be sold out but a matter of whether or not for all ST holders to show up in the stadium.

@Cocteau: Fantastic update of this magnificant stadium. Architecturally it is the best football stadium (or for our American friends: soccer stadium) in Europe for me, and probably also in the world! There are many very nice and very good other venues around, but sofar this one looks to me to be the best stadium.

It will be hard to beat this, though not impossible. It will be even harder to match the speed of the constructing process. Unbelievable!
