View Full Version : NOTTINGHAM | Trent Uni City Centre | Arkwright and Newton Buildings
danz013 August 8th, 2007, 02:54 PM A £70m Flagship move for the Uni
•A new main entrance from Goldsmith Street, creating a more lively, accessible and welcoming ‘front door’ to the City site close to the tram stop.
•A Central Court which will act as a vibrant new focal point for the campus – an inspiring and open setting where students, staff and visitors can mix and meet.
•The Newton Forum – described as the ‘learning and teaching powerhouse of the scheme’ – to be created in what is currently the basement and ground level of Newton.
•Refurbishment of the upper floors in Newton to provide a flexible environment for general
purpose teaching and academic offices. The top floor may become an open plan IT-rich study area boasting some 500 places.
•Refurbishment of Newton south block, which fronts on to Burton Street, to create
conference facilities and a highly professional setting for some of NTU’s ‘outreach’ activities.
•A stunning link building to connect the east and west wings of Arkwright. Together with the Central Court, this will enable the university – for the first time in its history – to provide a single location for ‘customer- facing’ frontline services. Teams from areas such as registry, student services, careers and finance will offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ to help students as they progress through higher education.
•The Arkwright quadrangle will be developed in the area of the building’s central wing. This will create a new open space easing circulation between facilities and providing space for events and recreation. The Chemistry Lab (Room 154) will be retained for dining, exhibitions, seminars and concerts. The quadrangle will provide “a new lung” for the university – a much-needed breathing space and a relaxing haven.
•High-quality office space to be created in Arkwright for the directorate, student support and administrative teams along with committee and board rooms.

pharmj August 8th, 2007, 03:47 PM The glazed roof will look really good...i remember someone on here comparing it to the British Library in London, and theyre right. It will look good with the tram running along side it. I hope they restore and clean up the taller building. It needs new windows and the stonework has got quite grotty over the years from pollution i guess.
ranny fash August 8th, 2007, 04:53 PM there's one minging building next to these, dunno what it's called but it's between goldsmith and shakespear st. raze it and put the taj mahal there
danz013 August 19th, 2007, 07:52 PM This has all been in construction for ages now! I wonder how far they are with it?
I'm gonna climb the fence one night and see if I can get some pics
Stefan88 August 20th, 2007, 12:55 AM I was tempted to climb the fence until I noticed the razor wire along it. It looks really nasty stuff and more like something you would see on a prison wall.

Long time no.... Well ive been planning this one for a very long time, since the Newton building infact, things potentially got harder and harder, as they changed the fencing, put even more razor wire up and i noticed even more cctv cameras.... I did a minor scouting mission with my brother a few weeks ago and found my entry point into the Arkwright from within the site, however i intended to do a mini explore but broke my bloody tripod!
Fast forward a few weeks, and this week ive done 4 explores and this was the pinnicle of an excellent week.
The plan was to go in the early hours of sunday because 1. no one will be about 2. i could go alone as it will be light and alot safer 3. i could leave site pretty safey too as no one is about till about 9am.
So i stayed up late saturday and decided not to sleep, climbed out of bed about 4:30am and woke the brother up as i decided i didnt fancy it alone! After a quick strong coffee were off, park up opposite the building and try to not look suspicious as the fuzz rolled past us. we jump the old school railings and squeeeeeeze under the metal construction fence and were in.... here goes....

The plan was to watch and photo the sunrise form the roof of the Newton building, sunrise was at 5:52 the internet told me, were had to be quick, thankfully the construction guys had left the first door to the stairs open and the lights on lol

Stupidly we went up 11flights of stairs on the wrong end of the building to find they had locked the floors off, so had to go back down 11floors, to come across the basement and back up 11floors, passing the front doors.
http://images24.fotki.com/v825/photos/9/945639/4858242/043934-vi.jpg
Luckily non of the doors upwards were locked like lastime, we made it onto the roof before the sun popped up!

bantam September 4th, 2007, 11:51 PM ^^ Looks like some mission. Great views from the top of Newton.
Stefan88 September 4th, 2007, 11:56 PM Bantam you should check the website out theres loads of cool stuff on there. Some of the guys that do it are complete nutters.

These guys have done (AND STILL DO!) Manchester Beetham tower.
Stefan88 September 5th, 2007, 12:13 AM I've had a look. The picture of the guy standing on the window cleaning crane is crazy.
Maybe when we get our Chek Whyte tower they can get in there and take some snaps from the roof. That'd look brilliant.
Furrydice September 5th, 2007, 11:33 AM Its taking ages this one isnt it. From the 28 pics it looks like they're completely refurbing the existing buildings as well. What gets me is how are Trent Uni coping with the loss of all this floorspace? Where have all the staff and facilties been relocated to? Clifton?
The new building and open area on the west side of the Newton building will look really good. In fact we have so many high quality projects u/c near the tramline - Southreef, CCAN, Pod and this - the entire tram journey from High School to the station will be really impressive in a couple of years. And thats even before Broadmarsh and the station redevelopment.
Bingethink September 5th, 2007, 11:37 AM Yes, and of course it's no coincidence. Build a high quality transport link and people will build and invest in their property on the route.
danz013 September 5th, 2007, 11:46 AM Those pictures from 28days are from ages ago... internally it should be much more advanced... because the pictures I took yesterday of the exterior, don't look that much different from the exterior pics on 28 days...
Stefan88 September 5th, 2007, 03:40 PM Are they going to give the outside of the building a clean then aswell? It does look abit shabby from certain angles. I hope they remove that tatty looking silver window lining that is only on about 20 of the windows.
danz013 September 22nd, 2007, 03:54 PM Anyone know how old the Newton Building is?
Stefan88 September 22nd, 2007, 04:07 PM It was built in 1956.
Here's the website I got the info from.
Check out the banner we have. Imagine if the skyline looked like that.

Stefan88 November 10th, 2007, 07:14 PM It's such a shame that we can't really see anything.
There's no way im climbing over that fence to get pictures lol.
danz013 November 10th, 2007, 07:44 PM well they cleared the area between the two buildings. I couldnt tell much more from there.
pharmj November 11th, 2007, 04:08 PM This project seems to be moving incredibly slowly! I dont really understand why they so hastilly closed it all off, and then havnt done anything since!
BeestonLad November 11th, 2007, 04:16 PM ^^ Its because they are totally gutting and refurbishing the insides of both buildings I think
danz013 November 11th, 2007, 07:38 PM ^^ Exactly.. remember that they have absolutely looooaaaadddds of work to do!!
BeestonLad November 13th, 2007, 11:20 PM Ive heard a rumour from a contact that Laing O' Rourke are off the job and have pulled out of it! Not sure how true it is because 70m is a big job and theyre already a bit into it. God knows what will happen if it is true though, big delays
Stefan88 November 13th, 2007, 11:22 PM ^^ More than likely.
danz013 November 14th, 2007, 02:26 AM of course. How/why would they pull out this far into the project? Surely they would have to cover the delays? They'd also be missing out on a huge job.
Stefan88 November 14th, 2007, 02:35 AM There are many different reasons why they may have pulled out. The university may have demanded a earlier occupation date of the building that the contractor didn't agree with or was capable of carrying out the works in time.
danz013 November 14th, 2007, 04:14 AM LOL but surely if the uni requested an earlier time the worst thing to do would be to get rid of an experianced builder who dosnt feel the job can be completed in time LOL
BeestonLad November 14th, 2007, 08:26 AM of course. How/why would they pull out this far into the project? Surely they would have to cover the delays? They'd also be missing out on a huge job.
inconsolable differences between the contractor and uni apparently, but we will see - just a rumour at the moment
BeestonLad November 29th, 2007, 11:14 PM I think Bowmer and Kirkland are now taking over the project after Laing O'rourke walked out, so there will be a delay of about 1 academic year :ohno:
danz013 April 19th, 2008, 06:45 PM This seems like its taken forever to get going. I noticed they've cleared a lot of the bricks that were piled up on the site.
Not that thats any real news.
pharmj April 20th, 2008, 06:22 PM They have started to rip out windows from the large white building now, so im guessing the internal work is charging ahead. Not sure when we will see any actual new structure going up though
danz013 April 20th, 2008, 06:28 PM What do you guys think of that building? Whats it called? Newton building? The big tall white one?
I actually think its a little bit of a landmark.. they should light it up at night (i think this is part of the plan)
BeestonLad April 20th, 2008, 08:04 PM its quite a unique building and I agree it is a bit of a landmark, although I hate the huge aerial thing on the roof, some sort of spire in its place might have looked good. LIghting it up might be a good idea, do we have any buildings in Nottingham that are really lit up at night?
with regards to the work bowmer kikrland have to have everything completed by september 2009, theyve made some good progress lately but so they should be as theyre getting paid £3 million each month for it
danz013 April 20th, 2008, 08:20 PM wow.
I think the Prudential Building is the best lit building in the city centre however since Hard Rock Cafe moved out, the lights have been left off.
Stefan88 April 20th, 2008, 11:06 PM I've always wanted to have the Arkwright Building lit up at night. It's a shame it isn't as it's nice looking (apart from the aerial) and it's in a prominant location.
I love the idea of a spire and if that was lit up aswell then that would be even better.
Stefan88 July 21st, 2008, 03:54 PM Look at the size of the excavation!

WillPS July 21st, 2008, 04:10 PM Bloody hell! That's what those mounds of earth are I could see from my Business Studies classroom!!
Ranwolf July 21st, 2008, 04:59 PM I think you mean the Newton Building. Do you mean the white tower?
BeestonLad July 21st, 2008, 05:03 PM Yep Newton is the white building Arkwright is the older grander looking building, this project is to join the two buildings with a glass atrium
Stefan88 July 22nd, 2008, 01:33 AM Does anyone know when this will be completed? It'd be interesting to see how much work has been done so far.
pharmj July 28th, 2008, 02:55 PM A tower crane has now been erected on this site, so im guessing we will start to see some height here now too. Its a white jib (?) crane...i diagonal one not a t-shape one, lol.
Furrydice August 1st, 2008, 04:37 PM Finally! I cant understand why this is taking so long or how the Uni has coped for so long with out its principle buildings.
pharmj August 2nd, 2008, 07:13 PM I cant understand it either, unless the buildings were being under-used before. Do we have anyone on here who goes to/is connected with NTU that can update us next year as to how it goes. Im not a student anymore so cant really get away with it...plus I went to NU!
BeestonLad August 4th, 2008, 05:48 PM I used to go there but graduated last month but Ive got someone in my family whose high up in the accounts department there who can keep me up to date with the latest news
pharmj October 6th, 2008, 06:48 PM The tower crane is still there, and there is a lot of steelwork around the base of the Arkwright building, so it looks as though the large glass covered building is progressing well. Havnt got much more of an update on this...anyone better informed? Opening dates...etc?
pharmj October 21st, 2009, 08:38 PM Although it went very quiet on this, they have been working away on this the whole time. The value was £90million..much more than I thought. Large new glass fronted atrium running along Goldsmith Street. NTU Business School will be taking the top three floors of the tall tower, to be ready for the end of the yearish...
Curtain goes up on the new face of NTU after £90m makeover
THE wraps are slowly coming off the new face of Nottingham Trent University.
Over the next two months students and lecturers will be moving back into new and refurbished accommodation after a £90m programme.
The towering Newton building, built in the 1950s, has been modernised and the Arkwright building, the Victorian creation so unsympathetically altered over the generations, has been restored to reveal an architectural gem.
The work has been carried out meticulously, watched closely by English Heritage.
The renaissance of NTU's city campus has been led by Sir Michael Hopkins, who has already given Nottingham some of its best modern architecture – the Inland Revenue complex in Castle Meadow Road and the Jubilee campus on the former Raleigh site for Nottingham University.
The obvious feature when the hoardings come down will be a stunning new link building connecting the old with the new. It will become the focal point, the main "inspiring" entrance from Goldsmith Street to the Newton and Arkwright buildings.
Arkwright was built for University College, Nottingham, and opened in 1881, a symbol of the ambition the business leaders and town council aspired to in the Victorian age.
It was bombed by the Luftwaffe, repaired and later butchered under local authority ownership.
Today it is beginning to look like new and gives off a sense of history and roots. It has been taken back to its original structure, revealing a host of breathtaking features such as fireplaces and roofs.
Additions built between the wars have been pulled down and a magnificent open courtyard is being created between the buildings, the size of a football pitch, says vice-chancellor Prof Neil Gorman.
Arkwright will be occupied by the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment. The architects have skillfully rediscovered or created some oasis spaces.
Goldsmith House, one of the university's ugliest, has gone.
The listed grade II* modest but impressive chemistry building has been dismantled and rebuilt re-using original materials where possible, a theme throughout the Victorian restoration. Where appropriate, bricks have been made to match the original.
It will be used as a meeting room, for dining, theatre and small concerts
About 400 people are working on the site led by construction company Bowmer & Kirkland.
Glass for the new atrium above the link building is being put in place, manufactured in Canada.
A sedum roof is growing on the roof of the two wings of the Newton building, the second largest of any UK university and second in size only to a building owned by Rolls-Royce.
Beneath were engineering workshops which have been ripped out and replaced by state-of-the-art lecture theatres.
Along Goldsmith Street is space for a new piazza and walk.
The nine-storey Newton building has been stripped back to its ribs and rebuilt inside.
The top three storeys are now home to Nottingham Business School which is moving in this week.
The Newton building will include conference facilities which will be available to multi-national companies and others.
The complex is being handed over between now and December 18. Lecturers will have to master the new kit before students will be admitted.
"We don't want a Terminal Five," said Prof Gorman alluding to the opening of BA's new facility at Heathrow.
The vice-chancellor and his team are staying put in the Dryden Centre.
Prof Gorman said: "The scheme is the largest investment in the city – and it is transforming."

Stefan88 October 22nd, 2009, 03:09 AM The Newton building desperately needs a night time lighting scheme. It's defintately an underating building in the city and is kind of ignored. It has a lot of presence when you stand near it and a lighting scheme would make it look fantastic IMO. Nothing fancy just a bit of uplighting from the base would do.
PerfectDark October 22nd, 2009, 10:20 AM They should light it like the cornerhouse. It's white and bland so coloured lights would look good.
ben77 October 22nd, 2009, 05:57 PM Need some pics of this. I think its going to be a real gem, along with CCAN and Southreef, 3 real quality projects coming to completion.. Infact if someone could get pictures of any of the above that would be really appreciated. Also haven't see what the Picture Works looks like for ages either..
Stefan88 October 22nd, 2009, 06:02 PM I'm back in Nottingham tomorrow until tuesday so I'll try and get some if I have time. An update will hopefully get a bit of discussion going, the EM forum has been dead for ages!

I does not seem like many of us actually live in Nottingham anymore! Interesting that we still all seem to care so much what happens to the old place.
McCraig October 24th, 2009, 04:22 AM Hey guys...... Maybe I can help, I'm always reading these threads but hardly give my input or help. I live in the city centre so don't mind going and taking some pics with my camera. It's no high end digital SLR but it does sport 8.2 mega pixels which i'm sure should do just fine.
Which developments would you like pics of?
MattN October 24th, 2009, 11:05 AM Why don't we have a forum meet?
PerfectDark October 25th, 2009, 12:14 AM I'm also going to start taking a few pictures when I'm around town. I was considering doing a top 10 favourite buildings list too.
ben77 October 26th, 2009, 03:47 PM I does not seem like many of us actually live in Nottingham anymore! Interesting that we still all seem to care so much what happens to the old place.
Yep, i haven't ever lived in Nottinghamshire (born in Loughborough and lived in London for the last 12 years).. Bit wierd really!!
ben77 October 26th, 2009, 03:49 PM Cheers for the offers to take some pictures chaps. Anything that you think may be of interest would be brilliant. I'd be really interested to see how CCAN, Southreef, Pictureworks, Arkwright building are getting on, it would also give us something to talk about on here.. Cheers lads

pharmj October 30th, 2009, 01:28 PM Thanks for these perfect. It looks like a good development. Will be nice to have something down Goldsmith Street as it was always a bit of a waste down there. The uni buildings coming back into use will be good as that part of town has felt odd since it all closed
ben77 October 30th, 2009, 03:38 PM I' d assumed that the roof would be on by now but that looks to be a while off yet..
AJNotts November 7th, 2009, 06:27 PM Here are some photos taken last week of the inside:

The Nottingham Conference Centre website has a few artists impressions of what the conference rooms will look like:

PerfectDark November 7th, 2009, 10:16 PM Woah, It looks absolutely fantastic inside.
I really like how white it is, and their use of glass, metal and wood. Especially the wood! It looks a lot more modern than it used to, it looks like a brand new building.
pharmj November 8th, 2009, 07:24 PM Wow, those photos look outstanding! A really good idea making this into a conference centre. With the recent sucess of holding the Conservative party conference in Nottingham..this should only encourage events like this to the city. Its good as well as it doesnt compete too much with the East Midlands Conference centre on Notts campus as that is so much bigger.
The quality of the redevelopment is very very encouraging! Well done Trent!
Furrydice November 9th, 2009, 12:24 PM It does look very smart inside! Perhaps I can now see why the whole project has seemed to take so bloody long. No pics of the big atrium between the two buildings though yet?
sheffy84 January 24th, 2010, 01:49 PM I was surprised when I walked past the other day that this looks almost complete now. The big glass entrance on Sherwood Street looks fantastic, but I guess the atrium section isn't finished yet as it looks boarded off.
benj360 January 24th, 2010, 04:33 PM The lecture theatre shown in those photos is one of the smaller ones - we have 2 or 3 in there that are 3 times bigger than that. The whole building is spectacular - it feels more corporate than educational. There's currently a temporary wall that separates those big white hallways from the atrium area, and if these aren't going to be replaced by anything when the project is complete then that space is going to be monolithic. Looking through the small windows of said wall into the atrium it looks as though it will be opened in April, which is when we've been told we will move into the Arkwright Building.
I have one query though:
There used to be a spire above the main entrance to the Arkwright Building. As it stands, there is a base on the dormer roof for this spire which looks as though work has been done to it, and yet most of the work on this building seems to be happening inside. Does anyone know if anything will top this base? At the moment it looks either unnecessary or incomplete.
Trent Student October 30th, 2011, 10:10 PM This project was fully completed in mid 2010 so I thought I would update the thread by posting some images of the finished product. Since the reopening, the complex has won many awards for its design and architecture.

hippietrailer October 31st, 2011, 10:42 AM Its very well integrated into the Newton and Arkwright buildings, very easy on the eye, plus theres so much bare concrete inside the atrium but you hardly seem to notice it because its so well lit.
Lears City October 31st, 2011, 06:34 PM Very nice development to be fair.
hippietrailer November 1st, 2011, 03:12 PM I suppose the only complaint i would have about it is that its extremely awkward to get around if your wheelchair bound, the floors are uneven and unmatched. Lifts are here there and everywhere.
