Kisumu Ndogo August 10th, 2007, 02:54 PM Welcome to Malindi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(once known as Melinde) is a town on Malindi Bay at the mouth of the Galana River, lying on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. It is 120 kilometres northeast of Mombasa. The population of Malindi is 117,735 (in 1999 census). [1] It is the capital of the Malindi District.

Tourism is the major industry in Malindi. The city is exceptionally popular among Italian tourists. Malindi is served with a domestic airport and a highway between Mombasa and Lamu. The nearby Watamu resort and Gedi Ruins (also known as Gede) are located south of Malindi. The mouth of the Sabaki River lies in northern Malindi. The Watamu and Malindi Marine National Parks form a continuous protected coastal area south of Malindi. The area shows classic examples of Swahili architecture.
Malindi District
Malindi District is an administrative district in the Coast Province of Kenya. Its capital is the coastal town of Malindi. The district has a population of 544,303 [1]. Malindi Town is increasingly becoming known as Kenya’s version of "Little Italy". Italians now own more than 2,500 properties, [2] and the number of Italian residents in Malindi town and its environs, estimated at over 3,000, is the largest European population in single area compared to other European populations anywhere in Kenya.
The Italian embassy is the only foreign mission with a resident consul in Malindi to aid its population. There are also speculations that, during the next coming general elections in Kenya, Mr Franco Esposito (Kenyan-Italian), a former chief executive officer with the San Marco Space Centre in Ngomeni area of Malindi District, will be a candidate for the Magarini Parliamentary seat.
Malindi is home to the Malindi Airport, and Broglio Space Port.

Eyewitnesses said Ms Campbell took Malindi Airport staff by surprise when she landed at 7am aboard a chartered flight, accompanied by two bodyguards.
Usually on such visits in Malindi, she is accompanied by Italian billionaire Flavio Briatore. However, sources said he was not with her yesterday.
Journalists had been made to believe the celebrity would arrive between 8.30am and 10am. But when journalists arrived at the airport at 8am, they were informed Ms Campbell had already landed and gone to her hotel – Lion in the Sun – owned by Mr Briatore.
“She came here with only two bodyguards and the pilot. She was quite in a relaxed mood after discovering there was no media,” said a senior Kenya Airports Authority official.
It was not immediately known how many days Ms Campbell would stay in the tourist town. Unconfirmed reports said Formula One mogul, Mr Briatore, would join her later.

ernestombayo7 August 14th, 2007, 02:21 PM Malindi is marvelous, its a shame not as many Kenyans tour Malindi.
Mathias i have no idea why Italians decided to settle in Malindi. There are rumours that some of the thousands of Italian villas are brothels and some come for the thriving Sex industry in the region.
The villas offer cheap accomodation for the visiting Italians who save alot of money that could have been spent on hotels.
Apart from the sex industry, many just come to relax snd enjoy the clean beaches of malindi

This story from the East African might give you some insight
Malindi Town is increasingly becoming known as Kenya’s version of ‘little Italy’. With Italians now owning more than 2,500 properties, prices of beach plots have hit Sh8 million per acre, writes Paul Gitau.
It is dusk. Colourful neon lights are flashing in the compound of a luxurious multi-million shilling villa, identified by a signpost in Italian.
A well-dressed Italian couple comes out of the villa and heads to a pizzeria (Italian cafÈ) for dinner a few metres from the residence.
Later after dinner, they leave the pizzeria in a taxi to a famous discotheque in town owned by an Italian.
Welcome to Malindi town, and be surprised at how many of its sections look like part of an Italian town or an African Rome.
The number of Italian residents in Malindi town and its environs, estimated at slightly over 3,000, is the largest European population compared to other European populations anywhere in Kenya.
The Italian embassy is the only foreign mission with a resident consul in Malindi to cater for its population.
With their financial and investment muscle, Italians have come to influence and even dominate life in Malindi and its neighbouring beach settlements of Mambrui, Mayungu and Watamu.
Favourable climatic conditions
Beach property in Malindi
A pioneer hotelier, Mr Godfrey Karume, who came to the town in the early 1970s, said the first Italian came to work at San Marco Space Centre at Ngomeni, owned by the University of Rome, in 1976. The centre has since changed hands and is now owned by the Italian Space Agency.
Karume says while socialising with the local people in evenings, the Italians noticed the attractiveness of virgin beaches from Ngomeni, Mambrui, Malindi, Mayungu and Watamu.
He said the workers at the space research centre sent word back home and some friends, who were leaving Somalia at the outbreak of the Ogaden War with Ethiopia started taking refuge in Malindi just a boat’s journey south of Mogadishu.
The Italian Consul in Malindi, Mr Roberto Macri, said that on arrival, and due to favourable climatic conditions and the hospitality of the local Mijikenda community, the Italian pioneers started buying beach plots, which by then only cost between Sh500,000 to Sh1 million an acre.
This attracted more Italian investors as an acre of beach plot in Italy was too expensive and could be sold at as much as Sh20 million.
Increased demand for beach plots
Since then, Macri says, the Italians have invested billions of shillings. He says currently, there are more than 2,500 properties owned by Italian investors.
Some of these include three two four-star tourist class hotels, villas, apartments and cottages.
A nominated councillor, Mr Kassim Omar, who is also a property agent, says due to increased demand for beach plots for investment by Italians, majority of whom are from North Italy, plots are now too expensive for locals.
He says an acre of beach plot costs between Sh5 million to Sh8 million, while ordinary land within the town costs between Sh1 million to Sh2 million an acre.
Omar insists the Italians, who own about 80 per cent of investments in Malindi, have brought a big impact on the prices of plots and houses.
For instance, he says, earlier a self-contained villa or cottage on a beach plot cost the owners between approximately four million shillings. Today, buyers have to cough between Sh10 to Sh12 million.
The heavy investments, especially in the hospitality industry, employ thousands of local people, who are living relatively comfortable lives, since there are no agro-based industries in the area.
Marriages of convenience
Interestingly, there have been a lot of intermarriages between the foreigners and the locals, but with a minimal impact on lifestyles as majority of these Italians like the local lifestyle.
With ever increasing number of tourists, prostitution has come up. It has also become a common occurrence for spouses in the area to consent to dual marriages, by allowing each other to hook up with a mzungu just for economic gain.
Such relationships are usually seasonal. During the high tourist season, the African couples separate and join their white lovers, only to reunite during the low season when Italian tourists go back to their motherland.
But for the Italians that have decided to make Malindi their permanent abode, such couples have had to divorce in a bid to cohabit with their white ‘friends’. These are merely marriages of convenience.
Interest in Magarini Parliamentary seat
An MP of Italian heritage? Yes. One Mr Franco Esposito, a former chief executive officer with the San Marco Space Centre in Ngomeni area, has declared his candidature for the Magarini Parliamentary seat currently held by Mr Harrison Garama Kombe.
Esposito, who has been nick-named ‘Kasoso wa Baya’ by the locals, wants to unseat Kombe, claiming that his development record would make him sail through.
Speaking at his luxurious Woburn Residence hotel, Esposito said that elders from the area have approached him.
"Kasoso is a very small bird, and since I am a short man, the people thought the name befitted me, and I accepted," he says with a chuckle.
"I am a Kenyan citizen who has lived here for over thirty years, and I believe I can make a good MP," he says.

^^
The europeans of ''dutch origin" are actually Afrikaners from SA. they are the ones who established Eldoret in the early 20th century.
Kenguy August 15th, 2007, 09:10 AM I also noticed the frequent use of Italian on my visit. Especially along the Lamu road area. The restaurants there even had their TV's tuned to Italian stations not to mention the number of pizza joints lining the street.

Story by NATION Correspondent
Publication Date: 8/21/2007
Formula One boss and Italian billionaire Mr Flavio Briatore and his business partner British supermodel Ms Naomi Campbell have unveiled grand plans to invest billions of shillings in the tourist resort of Malindi.
Dr Pierino Liana, the East and Central Africa and the Middle East representative of the Lion Group, which is owned by Mr Biatore, said yesterday that the two investors were set to build a top class hotel called The Billioneres Resort in Malindi.
“The six star hotel would be built where the closed Jambo Village hotel was situated in the upmarket Casuarina area. Its construction alone will cost at least Sh500 million,” said Dr Liana yesterday. Building and equipping the hotel would cost over Sh1.5 billion.
http://www.good-hotels-guide.com/africa/kenya/hemmingways-malindi.jpg
According to documents, the exclusive hotel would target the famous names around the world, including some of the richest people, to Malindi.
“We would like to construct a five or six star hotel targeting the top men of the world in Malindi,” said Ms Campbell in her first ever interview with local journalists last Friday since she began the latest of her annual visits to Kenya.
She said they also planned to invest in other areas, apart from bringing in the very rich of the world to Malindi. Among these is establishing a modelling school for Kenyan girls.

Malindi has it all —supermarkets with delicatessens, remarkable bars, gourmet restaurants, pavement cafÈs with the best cappuccino in Kenya, an exciting nightlife, a few boutique hotels and, of course, the designer villas. Nearly all these establishments are owned and often run by Italians.
The European role
Unfortunately, the media has created a poor reputation of these enterprises by consistently harping their alleged links to the mafia and related criminal acts such as money laundering and drug trafficking.
They never tell the stories of how the Italian community has contributed to Malindi’s fame.
Back in the 1980s, hotels such as Eden Roc, Blue Marlin and Lawfords were on the verge of collapse after the numbers of visiting German, Swiss and British tourists declined. By then, beach boys and hawkers in Malindi spoke fluent German.
Some had even acquired a Swiss accent after they were invited to the Alp country. In short, business was booming.
Then Diani’s fame begun to grow progressively because it offered better hotel facilities for the same price. Tourists flocked southwards and German tour operators begun to invest in hotels and entertainment spots there.
Before long, the booming Malindi had returned to its former self — a sleepy fishing village — until the Italians "rediscovered" it. Property prices were incredibly lower compared to their homeland — for the same cost, they could hardly build a garage in Italy. Besides, it was also very prestigious to own a house or villa in Africa. The Italians seized the chance to acquire land from retired English settlers who returned to the UK or moved upcountry to a cooler climate.
http://www.edenrockenya.com/images/MAP.JPG
Construction boom
It also helped that Kenya was already known internationally because of the thousands of prisoners of war who were interned in the country during the Second World War. A number of them stayed. A construction boom started and in no time, middlemen, beach boys, wheelers and dealers could speak fluent Italian and help with official documents.
What the English did not realise was that their old houses were worth nothing. It was the plots, mostly the seafront and the antique furniture, that were priced. The deal was very sweet for some Italian businessmen who bought a minimum five acres, thanks to the colonial rule and laws that governed beach-fronted property. The new Italian owners then subdivided the properties, developed and sold them to their friends back home at a profit. The delighted new owners arrived into the country and found their villas ready for occupation.
Skyprince November 14th, 2008, 08:50 AM Really great images of Malindi ! Can't wait to visit there with Kenyan frens

Malindi retains its glamour as historical town
Published on 01/03/09
By PAUL GITAU
Malindi town sits calmly on the beaches as the high tide soothes Indian Ocean’s coastline.
Its serene environment and unique cultures show the beauty of one of Kenya’s oldest towns.
The expansive beaches and scenic shoreline once attracted 15th century Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama to Malindi.
The legendary explorer left a landmark in Malindi, the Vasco da Gama’s Pillar, which attracts thousands of local and international tourists.
The Vasco Da Gama pillar in Malindi.
Arab occupation of the area also left several landmarks such as the Gede National Monument and other ruins in Malindi and Mambrui.
Their interaction with other groups gave birth to the Swahili culture, which dominates the area.
It is also believed that Chinese and Iraqi monarchies had their representatives in the area before the 14th centuries as evidenced by ruins near the Malindi Gold Club (Iraqi) and Mambrui village (Chinese).
SCENIC BEACHES
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01015/malindi-beach_1015921c.jpg
In recent history, Malindi’s unique and scenic beaches have attracted a large number of visitors, mainly Italians, Britons and Germans.
Many have settled in the town.
Some Italians have made homes along the silver beaches of Malindi.
These include about 1,500 makuti thatched luxury villas, which are both homes and cottage hotels, surround Malindi town. It is estimated over 70 per cent are owned by Italians.
Their arrival is traced to the 1970’s when the Italian government established a space centre to launch probe rockets, the San Marco Space Centre. The presence of the rocket launch station is said to have attracted hundreds of Italians who came as tourists and stayed.
The population of resident Italians in Malindi town and its environs, estimated at slightly over 3000, is the largest of any resident European population anywhere in the country.
The Italian Embassy is the only foreign mission with a consulate in the small town.
According to Italian Consul Roberto Macri, there are over 8,000 estates, which include hotels, villas, cottages, pizzerias and restaurants owned by Italians.
Mr Macri says Italians control at least 90 per cent of Malindi’s economy, offering thousands of employment opportunities to locals.
Malindi, with at about 25 tourist beach hotels, has some of the most exclusive five-star resorts in Kenya.
World starts like super model Naomi Campbell and Formula One personality Flavio Biatorre are frequent visitors to some of Malindi’s top luxury spots.
Some of the town’s luxury gems, like Hemingways hotel are mentioned in international travel books and features.
Malindi town, which is situated in the North Coast barely 120 kilometers North, has been growing at a tremendous speed.
INDUSTRIES
The town mainly depends on Tourism and salt manufacturing industries. However, it has great potential for farming and fishing, which are yet to be fully exploited.
A resident Joshua Kazungu says the town’s name was adopted from a Giriama phrase Mali I Ndi (Plenty of hidden wealth), which the tourists could not pronounce.
According to 1999 census, Malindi had a population of 300,000 but the numbers have grown to more than 500,000.
About 50 kilometres North of Malindi lie six salt manufacturing companies which also play pivotal role in the area’s economy. They include Kensalt, Mombasa Salt, Krystaline, Kemu Salt, Malindi Salt and Kurawa salt manufacturing firms.
The manager of Malindi Salt Works Mohammed Awadh says the firm employs at least 600 workers, supporting hundreds of families in Fundisa and Gongoni locations.
"This means at least 3,600 people in Magarini are employed by salt firms and this is their sole source of income," said Mr Awadh.
The residents also engage in fishing but lack sophisticated fishing gear to venture into the deep sea.
Chairman of Malindi Marine Association Athman Seif says fishing has not been productive due to lack of right equipment.
Mr Seif blames the Government for failing to give artisanal fishermen modern gear to promote commercial fishing.
Malindi Town clerk Geoffrey Katsole says the council is working hard to improve services to local people and investors by erecting streetlights from the Malindi Airport to Casaurina and Mambrui.
He says the council wants to make Malindi a 24-hour economic hub. The council has bought three garbage collection trucks and expects to acquire another next month in a bid to boost sanitation.
The council derives 80 per cent of its revenue from tourism. Through partnership, the council is in the process of starting an aqua-culture project at Sabaki at a cost of Sh1 billion.
The project is expected to create employment for over 3000 residents.
Mr Katsole says the importance of improving infrastructure to attract more investment and vistirs to the tourist metropolis cannot be overemphasized.
"The Mombasa-Malindi Highway has been under repair for more than two years and there is need to speed up the project so that tourists can travel with ease from the Moi International Airport in Mombasa to Malindi," says Katsole.
But the expansion of Malindi Airport has not been forthcoming. While tourism stakeholders want the airport expanded to international status, there has not been a clear response from the Government.
Kenya Airports Authority deputy Managing Director William Wamalwa recently said the corporation had no money for the expansion.

McLaren Formula One driver Fernando Alonso of Spain gestures during news conference ahead of the Belgian F1 Grand Prix at the Spa-Francorchamps race track September 13, 2007.
http://www.science-of-formula1.com/images/Formula%201_ferrari.jpg
Renault Formula One driver Fernando Alonso’s holiday in Malindi ended on a sour note when his private jet hit a wall at the Malindi airport and was forced to cancel his journey to Italy.
The incident occurred on Sunday as Mr Alonso, his wife and relatives were about to fly out. The jet’s left lower wing was damaged when it hit the wall as it taxied out of the parking lot.
The Spanish Formula one driver and two-time world champion’s trip was cancelled and passengers driven back to the Lion in the Sun resort, owned by Italian billionaire Flavio Briatore.
The Alonsos were at the resort for the New Year holiday.
The passengers in the jet included Mr Alonso, his wife Raquel Rosario, Mr Astrain Ander, Mrs Rosario Marta and Fernandez Alberto. The jet was scheduled to fly out at 2pm on Sunday. Now it is awaiting technicians from Europe to fix the damage.
On Monday, Mr Briatore, the Renault Formula One team managing director offered his personal jet, which was also parked at the Malindi airport since Christmas to take the guests to Cairo in Egypt, where they will take a flight to Italy.
“It’s true the accident took place but we cannot give details. A report will be prepared in Nairobi at the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) headquarters,” said Malindi airport manager Walter Agong.
A source at the airport blamed Mr Alonso’s pilot for “defying” orders from the ground man before he taxied out of the parking. “The pilot was directed to make a 180 degree turn immediately he ignited the aircraft but apparently he defied this, preferring to taxi forward. This resulted in his hitting a wall which damaged the wing of the aircraft,” said the source.
And the business community and residents in Malindi reacted angrily to the accident and pressed `the Government to expand the airport.
“The accident was due to small space at the airport. This is clear indication that we need a bigger and modern airport in Malindi to accommodate such figures,” said Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry branch chairman Andrew Mataza.

More than 250 private villas and cottages in the tourist haven of Malindi were gutted by fire on Sunday.
The fire, the biggest in the history of fires in the town, started at 1 pm and by 4 pm. Over 60 vehicles were also burnt in the incident.
The Italian owners of the villas, who had arrived a few days ago to prepare for the opening of the tourist high season next week, desperately tried to have the fire extinguished.
Palm Tree Club hotel and the prestigious Kibokoni Riding Centre, a popular horse riding place for foreigners, were among the property razed by the fire.
Four foreigners who had locked themselves in their villa with their workers and refused pleas by police to move out.
Area police Chief Peter Kattam said police had to break into the villa to save the Italian owners and their employees.
“We have also arrested four people who were looting property in one of the villas and locked them in the police cells,” said Mr Kattam.
Fighting back tears, the general manager of Palm Tree Club, Ms Lidia Filini said: “I just came from Italy two days ago to prepare for the opening of the high season next week. This is now all shattered. We are back to square one.” She said the hotel had been fully booked from July and the season looked “wonderful”.
“I was having lunch in one villa with my friends when I saw smoke coming from this direction. When I drove here, I only saw smoke, smoke, smoke and fire, fire, fire. Everything was down already,” said Ms Filini.
According to a guard at the Palm Tree Club, Mr Francis Makazi, the fire was started by an electric fault at Rajo Villas, near where he works.
“We just saw blue tongues of fire along the electricity cables and in a flash of a second, everything was engulfed in a ball of fire,” said Mr Makazi.
The fire was fanned by strong ocean winds and took only minutes to jump from villa to villa.
From Rajo Villas, the fire quickly spread to Temple House, Palm Tree Club, Red Lion Hotel, Ngorongoro House, Bahati House, Tembo House and Kibokoni Riding Centre.
From there, it was difficult to count the number of cottages burnt down because the whole place was engulfed in smoke, making visibility impossible.
Burning debris
Within no time, the entire area between Tamani Jua Villas and Rainbow Care Centre, a distance of about 25 minutes on foot, was a mass of burning debris with gas cylinder explosions renting the air. The fire then spread to local villages sending a wave of panic among residents.
Hundreds of people frantically removed their household goods from their houses and heaped them on roads. The municipal council’s two fire engines — a truck and a Land Rover — were overwhelmed by the intensity of the fire.
They quickly ran out of water and retreated to re-fill, but the firemen’s efforts were in vain.
Recent fires have burnt tourist hotels in Malindi and Watamu, leading to losses worth millions of shillings.
In January, Kivulini Beach Hotel and Flamingo Villas, were burnt down. In April, La Papaya Villas and two main bars at Kivulini Beach Hotel, which had been rebuilt, were burnt down. on April 6, several villas at Karibuni in Mambrui went up in smoke.

A paradise retreat with a rich history of big game fishing, Hemingways Resort is just steps from the ocean and Watamu Beach, considered one of the world s most beautiful. The resort is surrounded by lush, palm-filled gardens with Watamu Marine Park right on the doorstep. Pools and sun terraces as well as lawns and rich vegetation create an ambience balanced between barefoot charm and total sophistication.
The spacious rooms and suites are arranged in traditional thatched buildings decorated in contemporary style with touches of local African art and bold printed fabrics. Big-game fishing is definitely something you should try here. If that is not for you, go dolphin-watching, snorkelling or take a sunset cruise on Hemingways private dhow. Try the mangrove crab in the restaurant with fresh vegetables from the resort s own farm and then enjoy a nightcap in Hemingways Bar, named after the famous writer. Hemingways Resort is a Small Luxury Hotels of the World property.

By Stevens Muendo
Five months after a romantic Roman wedding, Formula One boss Flavio Briatore and Elisabetta Gregoraci extended their honeymoon to Malindi, Kenya (last December). But this time, the billionaire was not holidaying in a yatch as he did in Sardinia. He flew in a private jet and had a state-of-the-art private boat in which he was riding with his entourage, comprising some Formula One big names such as double world champion Fernando Alonso and a bevy of beauties. On a hunting mission, MondayBlues tracked Briatores entourage at the Maungu Lovers Island, where the racing tycoon and Elisabetta, an Italian lingeria model, turned to be an attraction to the few locals and a host of foreigners who had come to the coast for holiday.
The tycoon was heavily guarded by his security men and no paparazzi were allowed to interview him or take photos of his entourage. In fact, their attire was fitted with camera detecting gadgets, which have the ability to destroy a picture once a camera clicks towards a subject. But the onlookers were treated to a show of stunning eye catching bikini dressed beauties with Elisabetta showing off her striking curves emerging from her cut-out swimsuit as the couple took a stroll on the Island. Two hours later, the private boat left for a private beach resolt near Watamu Island, said to belong to the Formula One guru. It takes a special invite for anyone to access entry to the resort, a club for billionaires. Elisabetta is the latest in a list of famous models who have dated the Formula One tycoon. Flavio previously dated Adriana Volpe, Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum, with whom he fathered a daughter Leni, now four. Naomi Campbell and the racing tycoon are still close friends and are among international billionaires who frequent Malindi for vacations. The two are said to have special interests in the tourism driven coastal town.

1. Beaches. Malindi has 155 kilometres of coast line with beautiful silver sand beaches fringed with Palms, Casuarinas and Fragipani.
2. Marine National Parks. The Malindi and Watamu National Parks jointly comprise over 300 square kilometres of protected aquatic reserve containing a wide variety of corals which are the home of many species of multi coloured tropical fish. Glass bottomed boats can be hired at most hotels and Scuba Diving can also be arranged.
3. Tsavo National Park. Take the road westward out of Malindi, following the course of the Galana River and after about 100 kilometres you arrive at the Sala gate into the Tsavo National Park. Created in 1948 and covering an area of over 8000 square miles it is one of Africa's largest wildlife strongholds. With over 500 miles of roadways in the park, tourists are able to see a wide variety of animals including Rhinoceros, Buffalo, Giraffe, Antelopes, Lions, Leopards, Cheetah and large herds of Elephants. For more information on Tsavo visit www.yptenc.org.uk , look up Environmental Fact Sheets and select Tsavo.
4. Arabuko Sokoke Forest. This is one of the largest remaining coastal forests in East Africa. Over 420 square kilometres in size with a mix of dense thicket and open woodland. Access to the forest is through the visitor's centre near Gede Junction.
5. Ruins at Gede. The lost town of Gede, a deserted Swahili town hidden within the Arabuko Sokoke Forest. The town dates back to the earliest days of Malindi and appears to have been abandoned or plundered and destroyed in the 17th. century. The Gede ruins have been declared an historic monument and much excavation and preservation work has been carried out. There is a small museum on site and guided tours can be arranged.
6. The Marafa Depression. Located to the north west of Malindi and popularly known as Hell's Kitchen this extensive area of sandstone gorges and steep gullies is worth a visit.
7. Snake and Crocodile Farms. There are a number of snake and crocodile farms in the Malindi area, the most well known probably being the Bioken Laboratory and Snake Farm which is located just a couple of kilometres north of Watamu. This boasts the largest collection of snakes in Africa and is open to the public. You can also visit the African Snake Farm near Malindi Airport, the Snake and Crocodile farm near Malindi Marine Park and the Francis Ngombo Snake Farm near Gede.
8. The Kipepeo Project. Within the Arabuko Sokoke Forest, near the Gede Ruins a small group of farmers collect and rear butterflies for export abroad. The project is open to the public.
9. Mida Creek. An extensive area of mudflats and mangrove forest within which a wide variety of birdlife can be seen. Storks, Heron, Fish Eagles and many more.

Last week, Italian billionaire and former Renault Formula 1 boss Flavio Briatore landed at the Malindi Airport. For years, he has come to the shores of the Indian Ocean with his family and friends to enjoy the sun and festive season, away from the chilling cold of Europe’s winter.
His love for this coastal town will soon be cemented by the massive investment in an exclusive club that is expected to uplift Malindi’s status and attract billionaires like him to the Kenyan Coast. Located north of Mombasa, Malindi boasts a wide range of activities and sites, with the over 150km of sandy beaches perhaps being the biggest attraction.
The town has a rich history dating back to the 13th century, with the Catholic Church considered one of the first institutions to establish itself there. In 1498, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama erected a pillar in Malindi overlooking the harbour. It remains a big attraction.
The sandy beach to the south of Malindi town is sometimes referred to as Silversands. The area has private villas and has in the past few years opened up to major hotels and casinos. Malindi is most popular among Italians, who either make frequent visits or have decided to permanently settle in the town.
Indeed, many of the leading hotels and villas are owned by Italians
A holiday to Malindi in December may sometimes feel like visiting a town in Italy. But this does not mean Kenyans and other nationalities miss out on enjoying the rich attractions of the coastal town. Historically, Malindi has always hosted foreign powers — from the Chinese who visited in 1414 and mingled with the local people to Portuguese explorers.
The town, which was once called Melindi, has a broad offering of casinos, nightclubs, beautiful architecture – especially the ancient mosques – and a nine-hole golf course.

What annoys me is the lack of simple infrastructure like paving the streets.Malindi is a world renowned tourist destination and as you can see,the town from the pictures, little effort has been made to spruce it up.Dust and litter are everywhere.

The Airport itself needs to be upgraded. It is true alot of street are dusty and the government and council needs to double-up and see through this. Their are alot of investors willing to put up shop in Malindi but the environment may yet to be conducive enough. Miami may be a stretch for now but they could target an environmentally clean and well paved; Victoria - Mahe', Port Loius or Cancun( Sychelles, Mauritious n' Mexico respectively) for starters.

Now thats what i'm talking about.People don't realise how a simple act like paving the streets can radically improve the image of a town.Look how modern and inviting victoria looks.

Yes the council can pave but it takes more than that. The folks around have to be the disciplined type too. That pic of Malindi says the owners of those places also have a neglectful attitude.
Also what do you make of this? The council spent so much but the folks using it are very indisciplined.

Malaika254 April 12th, 2011, 10:56 AM Well the council should come up with by-laws to ensure the place stays clean. People just dont adopt the "disciplined " culture overnight if they didn't grow up with it, it has to be "forced down their throats".
Mintali September 2nd, 2011, 08:32 AM ope Malindi may reach the status of Port Louis

It's a big problem since most people believe in the mentality that what's not theirs is government's which is wrong, organisational standards needs to begin at the sub levels.
Well the council should come up with by-laws to ensure the place stays clean. People just dont adopt the "disciplined " culture overnight if they didn't grow up with it, it has to be "forced down their throats".
Agreed.
