Downtown YMCA Redevelopment/Patina

Soon it really will be possible for the Cowboy, the Indian, the Cop and the Construction Worker (not to mention the mustachioed guy in the leather chaps) to live at the YMCA. That's because the downtown Vancouver branch is set to undergo a major redevelopment at its 955 Burrard location.

The project's main building will be a 42-storey (418 feet) highrise, which will include 261 new condo units when it's completed by late 2009. The development also includes the refurbishment of the YMCA's original four-storey 1941 heritage building, and the addition of a six-storey daycare and fitness centre. Furthermore, the developer is going for LEED certification.

Probably the best part of the whole package is the fitness centre, which will be much better than your average condo-building fitness room - this one will include a pool, gymnasium, raquet courts, and health studios. Indeed, just like the Village People told us, the YMCA really will have everything for you to enjoy.

The new development retained and renovated part of the original 1941 built YMCA building.

I also like the little blue Citroen in the lower right corner of this picture...as if it's France or something! :lol:

Citroen? Well, I guess this is the only climate in Canada a French car would survive in. Citroen, Renault, and Fiat are the only auto majors with little presence in the Canadian market. Make your cars tougher, and people would buy them.

Nicest YMCA I've ever seen. Mine is very good though.

Might be the renders, but so far I'm not too excited bout the design... it looks like Bayview on pender st. And the horizontal taper on the south side isn't hiding the chunkiness at all, like what's up with the 8000+ sf floorplates?

This is my new least-favorite building, along with Fairmont and Capitol. The adjacency to the neighbouring stone church could not be worse... spandrel, really?? The heritage building that they retained is already all-brick, the least they could have done is match it with more brick or stone.

Fast progress. The glass seems to have a very dark blue tinge which I like.

Yeah, pale gray/bluish seems to be the usual default color. Neutered as you said.
