ERL To Offer Check-out Service At KL Sentral Early Next Year
From Umi Hani Sharani
STOCKHOLM, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd, the operator of the high-speed direct rail service between the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the city, plans to provide a check-out service at the Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station for passengers arriving on board Malaysia Airlines flights early next year.
Its chief executive officer, Dr Aminuddin Adnan, said this will be done via the installation of a RM100 million high speed conveyor belt at the airport which will enable baggage to be transported to the satellite building almost five times faster before being shipped off by the rail service to ERL's KL Sentral station.
"With this system, passengers can walk around KLIA, maybe do a little shopping, before boarding the train and picking up their baggage at KL Sentral," he told Malaysian media recently at the World Route Development Forum here.
According to Dr Aminuddin, the high speed baggage handling system to be built by German firm Siemens AG and funded by the government, will be ready by November and will undergo a trial run for a month.
Baggage will be tagged by bar codes which allow passengers to keep track of them, and there will be no time limit for them to pick up the bags.
"We are talking to Malaysia Airlines to package this service with their sales. We believe this will be more attractive to the foreigners," he said.
He added that ERL has yet to start talking to other airlines for this service until the service agreement is finalised with Malaysia Airlines.
Security, he said, will not be an issue as all the necessary procedures involving the authorities will be taken at the check-out counter.
"There will be a slight increase in baggage handling manpower, but security won't be an issue," he said.
Dr Aminuddin said the firm expects the check-out service to achieve, if not surpass, the volume of the check-in service currently operating at KL Sentral.
"About 20 percent of the passengers use our check-in service currently, and we hope to attract the same kind of passenger numbers, or maybe extra 5-10 percent passengers. It depends on the promotion by airlines as well," he noted.
He also said that ERL is in talks with several airlines including Thai Airways, KLM and Air France to open check-in service counters at KL Sentral.

13-12-2007: ERL targets European passengers

KUALA LUMPUR: Rail operator Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) says its checkout facility that will open at the KL Sentral city air terminal next year is expected to increase its passenger numbers by at least 5%.
The facility targets European and other long-distant travellers.
“Europe is a good market for us based on our research. Apart from the Asean market, we have a huge customer base from China and Australia,” ERLSB chief executive officer Aminuddin Adnan told The Edge Financial Daily.
Currently, international travellers make up 40% of the rail operator’s passengers.
ERLSB hopes the introduction of the facility and its collaboration with global travel distribution system, Amadeus, will improve the ratio.
Aminuddin said ERLSB would review the model Amadeus had designed for it next month before formalising a partnership agreement.
Amadeus is Western Europe’s largest online travel agency in 2006, with a 64.2% market share.
He added ERLSB was keen to work with similar operators, such as Abacus and Galileo, which have strong presence in the Asian and European markets respectively.
The rollout of the checkout system will be slightly delayed from the original date of January 2008, due to power supply issues.
“It will be happening only in March 2008, as the power supply to run full operations will only be ready in March,” Aminuddin said.
ERLSB yesterday celebrated its 20 millionth passenger. Seventy-one year-old Malaysian S Vellayutham walked away with an Emirates Airlines’ return ticket to Dubai.
Aminuddin said ERLSB notched an average of 5,200 passengers a day for KLIA Express and another 7,300 a day for KLIA Transit.
The operator has carried more than 4 million passengers this year, bringing its cumulative ridership to 21 million passengers.

The ERL plays an important part in raising Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s image, says Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd chief executive Dr Aminuddin Adnan
KUALA LUMPUR: Express Rail Link will help raise Kuala Lumpur International Airport's image as Asia's superior regional hub soon.
Dr Aminuddin Adnan
Express Rail Link (ERL) Sdn Bhd chief executive Dr Aminuddin Adnan said KLIA's image will be given a boost when ERL offers "check-out" service at KL Sentral's Air Terminal.
He said since ERL started operations in 2002, it had carried more than 20 million passengers.
Aminuddin said this when refuting claims by KTMB Workers Union president Abdul Razak Md Hassan that the service was not practical and cost-effective in a report in Mingguan Malaysia on Sunday when rejecting a proposal to start a bullet train service to Singapore.
"Overall expenditure on the project was RM2 billion, which remained the lowest cost per kilometre, or RM35 million, (20 per cent of the cost of Heathrow Express in London)," he said.
Aminuddin added that the ERL service was 99.7 per cent reliable, which was much better than similar services in Europe or local train services.
He also said the RM35 fee per trip was significantly cheaper than in London which charged STG17 (RM107) for half the distance.
He said the ERL was also environmentally friendly as its trains used electricity.
"Having had 20 million passengers to date, we have significantly reduced the number of road accidents," he said.
Aminuddin said the ERL project was completed on schedule, without cost overruns, and was operating smoothly.
"The achievements of this project clearly reflect the foresight and vision of its founders," he said.
rizalhakim May 16th, 2008, 11:06 AM ERL jual tiket menerusi Sistem Pengedaran Global
Hadir sama, wakil dua rakan strategik peraduan berkenaan iaitu Pengurus Negara Emirates Airlines, Alban Lee dan Pengarah Pemasaran LG Electronics, R Paramesvaran.

nazrey October 13th, 2008, 09:39 PM ERL Sees 5-10 Pct Growth Next Year
October 13, 2008 21:27 PM
By Siti Radziah Hamzah
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) - Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) is looking at five to 10 percent growth in its overall business next year.
Its chief executive officer, Dr. Aminuddin Adnan, said the target could be achieved with new strategies that have been outlined by the company and expected to be carried out by end of this year or early next year.
ERL is looking to expand its KLIA Transit business for the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) and to market its services in Europe.
Aminuddin noted that its KLIA Transit service was growing and already recording higher number of passengers than its KLIA Express service.
KLIA Transit captures between 6,500 and 7,000 passengers a day while KLIA Express serves 4,500 passengers a day.
The company is planning to focus on KLIA Transits KL Sentral station to Salak Tinggi station and three connecting buses from Salak Tinggi to the LCCT.
"The competitors are charging RM8-RM9 from KL Sentral to LCCT. (However) we are looking (at a figure) higher than that because the fare from KL Sentral to Salak Tinggi is already RM12.50," Aminuddin explained.
He added that the transit bus fare would be waived for passengers who commute with KLIA Transit from KL Sentral, while passengers from Bandar Tasik Selatan and Putrajaya will be charged for the bus transit.
ERL operates two high-speed rail services, namely KLIA Express and KLIA Transit, which are connected from KL Sentral to the KL International Airport (KLIA).
"At the moment, KLIA Express has not been growing because even the traffic at the main terminal building has dropped to some extent," he told Bernama in an interview on the sidelines of the 14th World Route Development Forum here Sunday.
He said there was a 20 percent decline for the usage of KLIA Express since the opening of the LCCT in March 2006.
"We are affected because we have seen a lot of people switching from normal airlines to low cost carrier," he said, adding that the company is hoping to capture part of the Air Asias market.
He added ERL is looking at the Air Asias market, as they would probably constitute about 35 percent of the traffic at KLIA.
Aminuddin said that ERL is looking to selling its tickets worldwide and have started with Amadeus to market its service throughout the 300,000 Amadeus sales outlets in Europe.
Spain-based Amadeus is the leading Global Distribution System (GDS) and the biggest processor of travel bookings in the world.
"They are very strong in Europe. At the moment, we are almost finalising the legal arrangements with them and our technical people are already solving some technical issues," he said.
"We are looking at two to five percent (contribution from this partnership). This is a new market. So far, we notice more and more foreigners are taking our train. They are quite used to doing this in Europe," he added.

EXPRESS Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL), which operates the high-speed train services between the city centre and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), plans to provide shuttle buses to the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang from Salak Tinggi.
This is to enter the low-cost carrier market and increase its revenue, said ERL chief executive officer Dr Aminuddin Adnan.
The shuttle bus service is expected to start operating in the middle of this year, he said today.
Aminuddin said ERL is expecting a five to 10 per cent revenue growth for its financial year ending June 30, 2009.

rizalhakim January 20th, 2009, 04:40 AM ERL plans Salak Tinggi and LCCT bus shuttle service
KUALA LUMPUR: Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd plans to provide a bus shuttle service from its Salak Tinggi station to the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal.
The rail operator operates the airport rail link service.
Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd CEO Dr Aminuddin Adnan said the company was currently working on the proposal expected to start in the middle of this year.
“We are looking into having two to three buses every 30 minutes. If there is demand, we will increase the frequency to every 20 minutes,” he said after the launch of the ERL Chinese New Year “Balik Kampung Safely” message at the KL City Air-Terminal in KL Sentral station.
The launching was conducted by Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin.
The Salak Tinggi station is located 8km from the low-cost terminal and the journey will take about 12 minutes.
The KLIA Transit stops at five stations – KL Sentral, Bandar Tasek Selatan, Putrajaya, Salak Tinggi and KL International Airport – 6,000 passengers travel on the transit daily.
While the KLIA Transit stops at the stations, KLIA Express is the direct service between KL Sentral and KL International Airport.
Dr Aminuddin said he believed the proposed shuttle service would not jeopardise the business of other transport providers but instead, enhance the current transport service to LCCT.
When asked about the shuttle’s proposed fare, he said it would be “as competitive as other service providers.”

rizalhakim February 25th, 2009, 09:38 AM Part of airport taxes goes to ERL
by Sharon Tan

KUALA LUMPUR: Since April last year, the government has been subsidising the operation costs of KLIA Express and KLIA transit train services. According to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, he is unsure how long this subsidy will last.
Speaking in parliament yesterday, Ong said that under the concession agreement with Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd, RM5 from the passenger service charge Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) levies on travellers is used to pay ERL.
However, since last April, the government has begun reimbursing MAHB for the sum paid. This arrangement, said Ong, was due to a restructuring exercise undertaken by MAHB last year.
The minister was responding to a query from Gombak MP Azmin Ali. The PKR vice-president had asked why airport taxes paid by passengers who were not using the service were being used to subsidise the costs of operating the rail system.
“So far, the initial capital outlay and cost of maintenance accrued have been quite taxing on them (ERL) and also at the same time with the inception of LCCT two years ago, that has further deteriorated the situation,” said Ong when met in parliament lobby.
Ong said the ERL project was fully funded by the concession company without any monetary support from the government and was thus dependent on the collection.
ERL, a YTL Corporation subsidiary, has a 30-year concession which started in 2002.
He also told the House that MAHB collected RM1.86 billion in airport taxes between 2004 and 2008 from all its airports in the country.

EXPRESS Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERLSB), operator of KLIA Express and KLIA Transit, will step up efforts to boost ridership this year, even as it expects some impact from the projected lower passenger traffic at KL International Airport (KLIA).
"This year will be a challenging period with air traffic growth slowing due to the global economic crisis and the Influenza A(H1N1)," ERLSB newly-appointed chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor told Business Times in an interview.
Airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has forecast KLIA passenger traffic this year to be flat, or 5 per cent lower, mainly because of the global financial crisis.
Noormah took over the post from Dr Aminuddin Adnan on June 1. The latter is tipped to become the next Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd managing director.
ERLSB is hopeful that ridership on its high-speed trains can increase 5 per cent this year through various initiatives.
Currently, the trains carry 11,168 passengers a day.
The initiatives include pushing ticket sales to international travellers, ticket-bundling with Malaysia Airlines and encouraging the public to take its "environment-friendly" trains.
Noormah said ERLSB is targeting business travellers worldwide for its train services through 831,700 travel agents at 385,000 point-of-sale terminals worldwide.
"We hope to launch this product by the third quarter of this year whereby an air traveller from Europe can choose to package the train fare with his air ticket to experience a seamless journey," she said.
Noormah added that ERLSB will be the third company to have such an arrangement, the others being at London Heathrow Airport and Sweden's Stockholm Express.
The company will also extend its VIP service to areas beyond the hotels and business venues.
ERLSB will continue to maintain the reliability of its trains, with 99.8 per cent on-time performance, higher than some of its European counterparts' 96 per cent.
ERLSB has carried more than 25 milllion passengers since its inception in 2002.
It owns 12 trains, with four coaches each. Eight are KLIA Express, and the rest KLIA Transit.
The company, 50 per cent owned by YTL Corp Bhd, has 17 per cent share of passengers at KLIA against other transport providers such as airport limousines and buses.
Its two other shareholders are Lembaga Tabung Haji (40 per cent) and Trisilco Equity Sdn Bhd (10 per cent), an investment company controlled by entrepreneur Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh.

nazrey August 19th, 2009, 05:33 PM ERLSB To Save RM800,000 With Energy Saving Campaign
August 19, 2009 21:49 PM
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERLSB), owner and operator of the high-speed air-rail services KLIA Express and KLIA Transit, hopes to save RM800,000 from its newly launched Go Green, Go Lo-Co energy saving campaign by end of 2010.
Speaking to reporters here Wednesday, chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said the Go Green Go Lo-Co was an outreach campaign that aimed to show Malaysians how they can lead a greener lifestyle with simple and pragmatic solutions.
She said as of 2008, the company's energy saving measures had resulted in an average savings of RM487,000 per annum.
Noormah added that as part of the company's Go Green, Go Lo-Co campaign, ERLSB would also stepping its green commitment by reducing, re-using and recycling products and materials used within its operations.
"By having this kind of campaign, we also hope to boost our market share from 17 percent currently," she said.
Officiating the event was the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui.
As an expansion of the campaign, ERLSB has included a new train-washing plant which will use 80 percent less chemicals, 90 percent less water and 70 percent less electricity, to result in a more environmentally friendly maintenance of its fleet of 12 high speed trains.
The plant will be built next month and it is expected to be completed in three weeks time, said ERL Maintenance Support Sdn Bhd's chief executive officer, Thomas Baake.
The train-washing plant will be operated by end of October, he said.

nazrey August 19th, 2009, 09:56 PM Express Rail Link says revenue, net profit may dip
By Sharen Kaur Published: 2009/08/20
EXPRESS Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERLSB) said its revenue and net profit may fall marginally this year, as total passenger traffic at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang has dropped by 15 per cent year-on-year.
ERLSB, which holds a 30-year concession to run the express rail service to KLIA from KL Sentral in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, saw slightly fewer passengers taking its trains so far this year, chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said.
"It is a challenging time now. If you look at the global travel market, it has gone down a lot," Noormah said at the launch of its Go Green, Go Lo-Co campaign at KL Sentral yesterday.
"But we are launching a few marketing programmes to keep afloat. Having said that, we are still hopeful for a positive growth as the economy is showing signs of a recovery," she added.
The company is promoting green travel this year as well as trying to get more companies to use the ERL by offering VIP services.
"We hope to increase our current market share of 17 per cent via these initiatives," Noormah said.
There are currently 138 KLIA Express and 78 KLIA Transit services a day through the use of its 12 electric high-speed trains.
Noormah said more services will be added when demand increases.
Meanwhile, ERLSB expects the energy efficiency and cost-saving measures it had embarked on earlier to lower its overall costs of doing business and save RM800,000 next year.
"We are expanding our existing train-washing plant in Salak Tinggi for RM320,000, starting next month. The plant extension, and the Go Green, Go Lo-Co campaign will contribute to the extra savings from next year," Noormah said.

It might cost more than MYR 1 billions. If I'm not mistaken YTL holds the concession for 30 years since it was build using private fund with some assistance from the government. KTM Komuter was a government funded project, that explains why the pricing is much more cheaper. Do the math.:)

Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERLSB), a rail operator controlled by YTL Corp Bhd, has received offers from India and Saudi Arabia to participate in some major railway projects in the two countries.
Chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said a Delhi-based consultancy firm wants ERLSB to offer its expertise in packaging the financing for a few railway projects in India.
India will be investing more than US$20 billion (RM70 billion) for railway development over the next few years.
Noormah said a group in Saudi Arabia has offered to tie up with ERLSB for operation and maintenance contracts.
The group is involved in railway developments and has bid for projects in Medina.
Noormah declined to name the companies.
"We will study the feasibility of the contracts to see if it would be viable for us to cary out the works. There are a lot of railway developments in Saudi Arabia," she told Business Times in an interview.
It was reported this month that the Saudi Railways Organisation is inviting bids for the second main construction job on its US$7 billion (RM24.4 billion) high-speed railway between Mecca and Medina.
It has asked six prequalified international consortiums to prepare bids for the US$1.4 billion operations, signaling and maintenance deal.
The Al-Rajhi Alliance, led by Saudi Arabia's Mada and Al Rajhi groups, won the first main construction contract in March this year.
"We are capable of handling operation and maintenance contracts. Our unit ERL Maintenance Support Sdn Bhd (Emas) is doing something similar in Thailand. We want to be sure it is the right time to enter India and the Middle East," Noormah added.
Emas has contracts from the State Railway of Thailand. for operation and maintenance, plus to train drivers for Bangkok's express railway line,
Noormah said Emas has been invited to submit proposals for similar contracts in India and Dubai and is in preliminary talks with the project owners.
"While we are exploring to go overseas, our focus is still on Malaysia. There is a lot more we could do to build our business, such as offering our expertise for railway development locally," she added.
ERLSB holds a 30-year concession to operate the KLIA Express and KLIA Transit rail services from KL Sentral in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, to the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang.
It has 12 electric high-speed train sets to operate the routes.
nazrey September 15th, 2009, 09:37 PM ERL expects new bus service to boost ridership
By Presenna Nambiar Published: 2009/09/16
http://www.btimes.com.my/articles/erl15/pix_topright
EXPRESS Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL), operator of the country's high-speed train, expects to increase ridership on its KLIA Transit by 10 per cent, with the introduction of a bus service from its Salak Tinggi station, which will connect it to the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang.
KLIA Transit currently chalks up a ridership of 7,000 passengers a day.
"The emergence of Malaysia's own budget carrier, AirAsia Bhd, has brought phenomenal passenger growth to the LCCT. The budget travel model has also evolved in this short time, with budget travellers showing that they are willing to pay a little more for added comfort and convenience," ERL chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor told reporters in Selangor yesterday.
An average of 7,000 passengers use the KLIA Transit service in a day.
Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri, who was present at the launching of the new service, said it will encourage more people to use public transportation in their travelling.
He said the initiative is in line with the government's effort to increase public transportation usage 25 per cent in 2015, from 16 per cent now.
On ERL being a latecomer in trying to get a piece of the LCCT passengers market, Noormah said the company recognised that in the infancy of the low cost industry, passengers would be very price sensitive making it difficult for the rail line operator to compete.
"We recognised that was not the right time to go in. Now, however, passengers' attitude has evolved," she said.
ERL has not invested a significant amount in the bus service, Noormah said.
The company is kicking off the KLIA Transit-LCCT service by offering 5,000 free tickets to passengers who register for the free ticket on its website.
On passenger movement this year, Noormah said while the rail service has seen a decline in the number of passengers in the first five months of the year, the last two to three months has seen a 10-12 per cent increase in passengers using the line.
"The decline is in line with the global decline in passenger movements," Noormah said.
Meanwhile, on the company's plan to extend the existing rail line in the main terminal building in KLIA to the new LCCT site, Noormah said the project is still in its preliminary stage.
"We submitted the proposal for the 2km link to the Ministry of Transport a few months ago," Noormah said. The proposal is still under consideration by the ministry.
She said it is too early to tell how much the project will cost ERL.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- Travel and tourism firm, Amadues, has signed a partnership deal with KLIA Ekspres to allow travel agencies to book the train service via its distribution solution.
KLIA Ekspres, a train service that connects the Kuala Lumpur International Airport with the city centre, would now be available to more than 102,000 travel agents in 219 markets through Amadeus Airport Express.
In a statement, Amadues Asia Pacific president, David Brett, said the rail was an increasingly common mode of transportation in many countries in the region.
"High-speed rail services are also growing rapidly as a convenient option for business travel," he said.
He said offering travellers the ability to book rail transport in addition to their airline tickets would help rail providers increase passenger bookings and help travel agencies to add value.
The addition of KLIA Ekspres further expands Amadeus's service which already features Heathrow Express (London), Arlanda Express (Stockholm) and Friendly Airport Limousine service at Narita Airport (Tokyo).

KUALA LUMPUR: For this Chinese New Year, consider using public transport instead of driving to the airport, advised Road Safety Depart*ment deputy director-general Sim Say Kiong.
“The number of vehicles on the road doubles during festive seasons and poses a danger to all road users.
“Passengers who take public transport not only reduce their chances of getting involved in car accidents but also do their part for the environment at the same time,” he added.
Sim, on behalf of Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew, spoke at the launch of the 2010 “Balik Kampung Safely” awareness campaign on Wednesday.
Express Rail Link’s CEO Noormah Mohd Noor said that every year passengers who used KLIA Ekspres or KLIA Transit helped reduce some 3.5 million car trips, cutting carbon emission.
In conjunction with its eighth anniversary, 888 KLIA Transit tickets will be given out to customers.
Jessie Wee, 57, from Kepong, said she was excited to get her free ticket as she was planning to travel to China soon.
“I learnt about this from the papers and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity,” she added.
ERL released a statement saying any remaining tickets not claimed at the counter will be up for grabs on its website at www.kliaekspres.com.

2010/08/24
KUALA LUMPUR: Two Express Rail Link (ERL) trains collided at KL Sentral station on Sunday night, leaving three passengers injured.
All three victims received outpatient treatment at a hospital. This is the first reported accident involving ERL trains since it began service 12 years ago.
One of the trains was about to depart at 9.45pm for Kuala Lumpur International Airport when another train, which was empty, rammed into its rear.
ERL Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said the rest of the passengers were put on another train.
Noormah added that an investigation was being carried out.

Quiroz August 24th, 2010, 11:10 AM Regarding on the proposed ERL extension to LCCT..are they going to build the extension from KLIA? Which mean if someone want to go to LCCT, he or she have to pass through KLIA first right?
I thought that they are only going to provide shuttle between LCCT and Salak Tinggi only? They are going to exted it meh? Meaning going to LCCT will be more expensive than going to KLIA main terminal?:ohno:
sc4 August 24th, 2010, 12:56 PM ^^ Haha, I think you're confused, the Salak Tinggi shuttle is referring to the current LCCT now in operations. The ERL extension is for the future permanent LCCT under construction now...
hetfield85 August 27th, 2010, 10:11 PM so it will be MORE COSTLY for passengers to travel to the LOW COST terminal than the main terminal.

nazrey November 22nd, 2010, 08:39 PM ERL expects 8pc rise in ridership, aided by VIP service
By Azlan Abu Bakar Published: 2010/11/23

EXPRESS Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) expects to see ridership for its KLIA Express to increase by 8 per cent this year, backed by among others its new VIP chauffered service.
Chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said although revenue contribution from the new service at present may be small, it is an important market for ERL.
"It would take some time to grow the segment as it is a very niche market for us," she said, noting that its target group included business travellers and hotel guests who require end-to-end services.
She said the company was working closely with hotels and travel agents to further promote the new VIP service.
The operator of the high-speed KLIA Express and KLIA Transit previously provided up to 30 limousine trips daily for the premium service to office and hotel guests.
With the expansion of the service to homeowners, it is targeting a growth of 50 per cent in trips to encourage ERL's ridership.
At present, ERL's market share of commuters to and fro the KL International Airport (KLIA) is about 15 per cent.
ERL is 50 per cent-owned by YTL Corp Bhd and 40 per cent-owned by Lembaga Tabung Haji. It provides daily rail services between Kuala Lumpur at KL Sentral and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Noormah said the growth target would also be supported by growth in passenger traffic volume at KLIA.
"Our ridership is very much dependent on the airport numbers. We are optimistic of achieving the target," she told Business Times in Kuala Lumpur recently.
She said last year, the whole aviation industry including the ERL services was badly affected due to the global economic crisis and the H1N1 epidemic.
"We hope to do better this year and see growth in tandem with the improved economic environment."
On its track expansion, Noormah said ERL had submitted its proposal to the government nearly one year ago and was still waiting for a firm approval from the government.
She said initially, the plan was to extend the tracks by another 10km to the existing low cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang but as operations will be moved to the new LCCT called KLIA 2, the tracks will only need to be further extended by two kilometres.
She declined to reveal the investment cost of the expansion as it had yet to be finalised with the authorities.
"In order for us to complete the tracks in line with the completion of the new LCCT, we need the approval as soon as possible," she said, noting reports of the extension had been mentioned by ministers and Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd previously

EXPRESS Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) expects better passenger growth after the completion of the 2.2km extension track linking the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) by October next year.
In the first 10 months of this year, ERL carried 13,095 passengers, an increase of 16 per cent from 11,261 in the same period last year.
ERL executive chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh is confident that the KLIA Express and KLIA Transit ridership will improve further once the rail link service is completed. "The link is now 14.2 per cent complete."
Nadzmi, speaking to reporters after the ISO certification ceremony, said the ride between the ERL station at KLIA and KLIA2 will take three minutes.
The company has invested RM1.1 million to undertake several initiatives to improve customers' experience, which included enhancement of fare collections system, e-ticketing system and free Wi-Fi connectivity.
"The initiatives also included the interior refurbishment of 12 KLIA Express trains, scheduled for completion in April next year," he said.
Yesterday, ERL was officially presented the ISO 9001:2008 certification for the scope provision of rail services between KLIA and KL Sentral by the awarding body Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance.
In his speech earlier, Nadzmi said with the certification, customers are assured that ERL is committed to maintain the highest standards of effectiveness and responsiveness in achieving the company's goal.
ERL is the first train operator in Malaysia to be accorded the ISO certification for total customer satisfaction. Also present was ERL chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor.

KUALA LUMPUR: The ERL train extension from KLIA to KLIA2 will be ready by October this year, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.
"The train journey between KLIA and KLIA2 will take about three minutes. The extension will likely see the volume of ERL passengers doubling," he added.
The ERL services, which include the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit, carry about four to five million passengers every year.
Kong said the project to extend the line to the new low-cost carrier terminal totalled up to RM100mil.
"The project is currently running smoothly and about 25% complete. It is scheduled be ready by Oct 31 this year while the KLIA2's construction is expected to be completed in April 2013," he told reporters after visiting the construction site of the proposed rail extension here Thursday.
He added that the extension was necessary in line with the development of the new terminal as it will enable passengers from KL Sentral to reach the KLIA and KLIA2.
"I hope that when KLIA2 is in full swing, we will be able to make ERL services available 24 hours a day to cater to flight arrivals in the wee hours of the morning," he said.
Currently, ERL services run for 21 hours a day, taking a break between 1am and 4am.
Kong also commended the ERL services for achieving "on-time" performance of 99.83%.
The project to extend the ERL line started in July last year and covers 2.14km.
In 2010, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced plans to build the KLIA2, the world's first mega terminal for low-cost carriers.
He said it was expected to boost the nation's tourism industry by attracting more airlines and visitors.

Aquaglas January 20th, 2012, 12:36 PM they should buy more trains.
They should. They use ET 425. In the next couple of years some of these trains in Germany will no longer be needed as new tenders require new rolling stock. A cheap grab is possible and refurbishment shouldn't be a problem. Then they can double capacity by coupling 2 trains and keep the frequency the same.
