that island is usually submerged underwater during hightide, that community is not Luzonian style of shanty town, if you check out Dubai, they love to settle on banks of the seashore that's why they created several man made islands because it is part of their culture to build communities on the sea...and those people in the engr island have the same culture sa dubai, they come from where land, food, and other basic necessities in life is not important, they are there because they being paid by corporations that does not want to pay import duties. SM owners came from the same region where these people came from. And usually, SM come in when that land has already been awarded to those people living in that area.

^^ Indeed. Kahit ilang tsunami at sunog pa ang dumating at kahit ilang rebuilding pa ang gawin, poverty will always be there unless we identify and solve the root cause of the problem.

US Embassy opens $50-M 'Green' building
By ROY C. MABASA
April 28, 2011, 8:01pm

MANILA, Philippines — The new $50-million two-story state-of-the-art annex building that houses consular services and other offices of the United States Embassy in Manila on Roxas Boulevard near Manila Bay was formally opened Wednesday afternoon.

During its grand opening, US Ambassador Harry K. Thomas Jr. proudly declared that the new energy-efficient buildings, which is part of a larger Embassy facilities improvement project that represents a $130 million investment in the local economy and the creation of 2,000 jobs for Filipinos, is a shining example of “Green” construction.

Thomas explained to the guests who were present at the ceremony that its architectural features are composed of sustainable materials and the cooling and lighting fixtures are fitted with environmentally friendly and energy-efficient components that meet the US Green Council requirements for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

Furthermore, the complex is composed of more than 12,000 cubic meters of concrete and 5,000 tons of structural steel, and is designed to withstand even the most severe seismic event. As additional safety features, the building is equipped with state-of-the-art fire detection and suppression systems.

The US envoy said even the waste produced from the building is environmentally friendly since the sewage water that emanated from the 130,000 square feet compound is treated and recycled into irrigation water at a newly constructed sewage treatment plant on site.

Inside, there are 99 interview windows with modern and effective sound-proofing for improved privacy during interviews, and public waiting areas on the first and second floors that can comfortably accommodate more than 500 people.

For the convenience and comfort of the public, both waiting areas are equipped with modern queuing systems while LCD TV screens broadcast the latest news and sporting events.

Is this the right thread?!?! but has anyone got any pics of the new annex?!?!

Hi Forumers. How about this idea? Sell Baseco Compound to the highest bidder, e.g., Ayala, SM, etc. The government use the proceeds to convert another government owned land into a small town with all amenities and conveniences and use this as relocation site for the squatters. I am sure the government will even make money after all related costs are paid for the squatters. A urban planner/architect/developer could be hired by the government to assure a good development site.

Too much politickings, no political will of our leaders and misinterpretation of democracy are the major problems our dear country have. If only they shall get rid of these, all those social and economic endeavors will be solved...We need to CHANGE....

Im not sure govt can sell the entire baseco compound since im not sure if its a privately owned by baseco. Anyways some parts of it were already sold to the former IS colonies living in the area. Gawad kalinga and habitat for humanity has built a lot of houses for the poor communities living there.

There is CCTV in many places of the US embassy compound and they can see you even if you were 50 meters away.

Group to SC: Manila Bay clean-up displacing coastal communities
SOPHIA DEDACE, GMA News (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/220708/nation/group-to-sc-manila-bay-clean-up-displacing-coastal-communities)
05/16/2011 | 01:14 PM

A fisherfolk group said the Supreme Court (SC) may have overlooked the element of "social justice" in its December 2008 decision that ordered the clean-up of Manila Bay.

This concern was raised by fisherfolk group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) on Monday, when it asked the SC to stop the demolition of houses in informal coastal communities near the bay.

The SC has ordered the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to remove informal settlers, illegal structures along river banks and waterways connected to the bay.

In a five-page letter, Pamalakaya and other militant peasant groups told Chief Justice Renato Corona and the 14 other magistrates that private corporations are taking advantage of the SC's order to demolish illegal settlements.

"Honorable Chief Justice, please allow us to express our grave concern and collective wisdom on the SC decision through this humble letter of concern and appeal We believe the high tribunal failed to consider the very essential element of social justice when it decided with finality the Manila Bay cleanup case on Dec. 2008 and affirmed the decision... last February 2011," the groups said.

They added: "People and groups with vested interests to corporatize and privatize Manila Bay and Laguna Lake are taking advanatage and are using this landmark ruling to effectively eject the fishing people and urban poor folks to pave the way for the grand coming of [the government's] public-private-partnership escapades in Manila bay and adjacent rivers and tributaries."

They said that while they support the SC's initiative to rehabilitate the Manila Bay, the fisherfolk are still "an integral art of Manila Bay's life and survival."

They added that 80 percent of the untreated water wastes thrown into the bay do not come from the coastal communities but from industries and commercial establishments near the bay. - VVP, GMA News

Local authorities need to travel to San Francisco in CA to get knowledge and learn how to clean and manage the bay area in Manila. To this day in San Francisco, there is a continuing effort to clean and maintain the bay area and its surroundings. There was a time a few decades ago when the San Francisco Bay area was one of the most polluted bodies of water in the United States.

For geo-political reasons in southeast asia where China is flexing it's military muscle,
it will be for Philippine interest to have a military defense treaty with India and Russia.

India and Russia can be another counterweight to balance the might of China, especially
our military treaty with the US is vague and unsure if they will help us incase of Chinese
invasion of our Kalayaan Islands group in the south china sea (new name : southeast asian sea)
near Palawan coast.

Dang, this is really getting on my nerves! The Manila Bay Reclamation Area is still half bare grasslands, and now these capitalists are on it again! The Metro has already seen too much commercial developments! Why won't they focus on environmental, educational, scientific and urban planning developments instead? Ow man, gimme a break!

Cleaning-Up of Manila Bay

MANILA, Philippines — The rehabilitation of the Manila Bay, the international gateway to the Philippines, is being pursued by the government, assisted by civic and non-governmental organizations. Manila Bay, famous for the beauty of its sunset, is the country’s busiest port. It has its place in history – the setting for the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898 and the siege of Corregidor by invading Japanese forces in 1942.

The Bay’s water quality and its ecosystem, however, continue to be destroyed by pollution, siltation and sedimentation, and unchecked development. The Supreme Court has given concerned government agencies – the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – deadlines to enforce its December 18, 2008, ruling to rehabilitate Manila Bay and make its waters safe for swimming and other forms of recreation.

By June 30, 2011, the MMDA and DPWH should come up with the list of informal settlers along the rivers of Pasig, Marikina, San Juan, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Zapote, Navotas, Malabon, Tullahan, and Tenejeros – all of which directly drain into Manila Bay. The MMDA was given until December 31, 2015, to demolish illegal structures along riverbanks and waterways connected to the Bay.

The DENR is the implementing agency for the Operational Plan for the Manila Bay Coastal Strategy (OPMBCS), drawn in partnership with national government agencies and other sectors in coastal and watershed areas in Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and National Capital Region. By the end of June, 2011, DENR should have submitted to the Supreme Court an updated OPMBCS, as well as summary on the overall quality of the Manila Bay waters, and names and addresses of companies in Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, and Bataan that generate toxic and hazardous waste. Local governments whose rivers drain into Manila Bay will join in the effort to remove illegal structures.

The government, assisted by private groups, is determined to make Manila Bay’s waters clean and clear – an undertaking that requires commitment, concerted effort, and political will.

Worse than the condition of Manila Bay is the fact that people seem to have resigned and accepted the filthy condition of the bay just by looking at the photos on this thread.:ohno:

It's still possible to lessen the pollution on Manila Bay. But reviving the bay area for recreational purposes (swimming and fishing) is next to impossible.

I was surprised to see there are still seagulls who survived the pollution around manila bay.

Once it cleaned up, eventually the pollution level will go down and more fishes will live again, only then its ok again to swim and eat fish from that body of water.

As posted here, Manila Bay can still be used for recreational purposes even with the filth and stench but I would not dare go kayaking there. Not at all appealing to me but to others, they seem not to care at all!!

Local officials need to travel to San Francisco and learn how the city cleaned and continue to clean the San Francisco Bay. At one time in the past, the bay area was one of most polluted body of water in the US.

Manila Bay area is disgusting!! I have seen cleaner treated wastewater in Las Vegas. Our "urban river" treated wastewater flowing back to Lake Mead looks blue, smells clean and it is clear. All the water run-off in Vegas goes to a sewer plant, gets treated and recycled.

World Class Talaga ang Pinoy! I'm Proud to be Pinoy!!!

The first two pix are quite pleasant. Scrolling down however make me cringes.
The filth freely floating is disgusting, but the smile and jolly faces of our
"kababayan" enjoying the event is priceless.:)

Hopefully the proposed massive clean-up of the "Bay" initiated by the government will workout. Goodluck.

For many years I have notice that not only Garbages is polluting the sea of Manila Bay, it is also polluted with hundreds or thousands of tons of Oil.

Perhaps many foreign and domestic ships have discharged their sludge oil in
Manila Bay since our government agencies were laxed in enforcing Anti Pollution law in Manila Bay.

There is still a chance to be like that if they dump tons of sand, especially white sand on top of it along that whole stretch. I am not sure how polluted Manila bay is but just a place where people can stroll along the beach even if the swimming is not well recommended. I bet that would draw tourist or crowds around there.

I just happened to pass by baywalk this morning around 6am and boy oh boy the area was totally destroyed. The seawall was totally gone. Waves occasionally splashed in and reached roxas blvd. Virtually all the brick pavement was gone, all piled up in a heap. The plant boxes are gone. The concrete seats are also gone. Trees fell and the center island was also damaged. Rajah soliman park definitely looks like a war zone. One good thing that came out of this tragedy was the total destruction of those stupid lights along the baywalk, maybe even nature find those lights quite distasteful. Its definitely going to cost a lot of money if they ever decide to reconstruct baywalk again. If they do I hope they get a good landscaper to design it and not some jologs.

City of Manila has budgeted at least P200 Million for the repair of Manila Bay. DPWH will install a modern type of sea wall as it is their responsibility. Manila City will only repair the infrastructure along the Bay plus the lights. I'm positive about it. There is good news after the typhoon.

However, on swimming, it's not possible.

Shanties were smashed and gone during the typhoon. Those squatters in BASECO and Navotas are still housed in temporary shelter. The poor are always the victims of typhoons.

^^ natawa ako dun ah. The shark!

I just saw on ANC, the plan of DPWH for the new sea wall. The width is 1 meter long from the previous 60 to 80 cm. Along the wall, they will put rebars for reinforcement. They will maintain the same height.

As soon as these govt. officials hear project, they start salivating about the commission. tsing tsing is the first thing in their head instead of how to make a first class project. That's why everything ends up looking half assed and unplanned. I wonder if it's innate. Cant they think of common good for the public and the people they serve first instead of tsing tsing . Too bad, Manila bay can be so beautiful, now that you have the ocean park, MOA, museo ng bata, Manila hotel , intramuros for history, Malate (assuming they clean it up) for shopping, dining, Picc area is nice enough, It can be worth one-two days stopover before headings into the provinces. they just might get revenue from that hmm...

They better make it sturdy this time because it's only going to get worse. Metro Manila is sinking in the ocean.

The P200M mentioned by Manila City is the total damages to Manila's infrastructure. It is not the cost of rebuilding the baywalk.

I'm sorry, I was just trying to help others see details in your picture with the poor visibility brought by the rain. I thought the picture has interesting details in it that most forumers wouldn't notice without additional contrast adjustments so the picture may tell more of the story of the typhoon and the ravages it brought to the bay area.
If I didn't consider asking you first before posting it, it was my fault and I am sorry.

I didn't think there's anything funny with the typhoon, not at all, I was just trying to lighten things up with all the casualties and damages brought by the storm and the storm surge along Roxas Blvd.

No need to shout my name, please, I can read even regular sized texts.

Double-Layered Seawall is good for Tourism and Environment - Chairman Francis Tolentino

http://www.mmda.gov.ph/news.html#oct32011
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino today said his proposed design of a double-layered seawall along Roxas Boulevard would promote tourism and enhance the environment. It would also improve public safety, serving as the first line of defense against strong waves from Manila Bay.

Tolentino's proposed design includes the construction of a concave second seawall running parallel to the existing seawall along Roxas Boulevard. "It will enhance public safety and address environmental concerns," said the MMDA Head. "The proposed new seawall will be the first layer of defense from strong waves coming from Manila Bay during storms and other natural disasters. Built in accordance with the latest technology, it will be an improved structure that shall be stronger to withstand the buffeting waves."

The MMDA Chair said the design will also enhance Roxas Boulevard as a major tourist destination, landmark and seawall promenade. The new seawall will be accessible to visitors through Spanish-style bridges. Plants, mangroves and benches shall be installed on the promenade or within the vicinity, so that tourists and passersby could better appreciate the beauty of Manila Bay and its famous sunset.

The access bridges shall be opened from 10am till 5pm as a promenade similar to those in Galveston, Texas and Vancouver, Canada. The bridges would remain closed during off-hours or during storms and other disasters.

"I hope this design would merit the favorable endorsement of concerned government agencies, and of the public as well," the Chairman said.

I get the idea ng proposed seawall ng mmda. it is better than the original. but I am just thinking, ung tubig sa loob ng seawall... baka maging stagnat water sya, pumugaran pa ng lamok. is there a better design that will not make the water stagnant? i'm sure meron pa ibang idea dyan. we need to be creative in making the design of the seawall environment friendly and at the same time serve its purpose during typhoons and high tide.

^^Wala lang? Wala pala, e ba't nag-post pa. There's a reason for everything. We are not bereft of thinking, otherwise we are dead.

We join the clean up of the bay every year during ICC and notice that the garbage seems impossible to reduce to nothing. I wish that they would install cctv cameras at the planned new baywalk and penalize / impose fines to those who would throw anything on the water. Even if we would have a worldclass and spectacular design for the seawall but tourists could see trash floating on the water, the attraction would be minimized.

PRESS RELEASE
Manila Media Bureau
October 11 , 2011

LIM MEETS MMDA CHAIRMAN TOLENTINO AND DPWH SECRETARY SINGSON RE: RESTORING MANILA BAY SEAWALL

Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim yesterday held a meeting with Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Rogelio Singson to iron out plans on the restoration of the Manila Bay seawall destroyed during typhoon `Pedring.’

In a sit-down breakfast meeting also attended by secretary to the mayor Atty. Rafaelito Garayblas, Manila Historical and Heritage Commission vice chair and former Miss International Gemma Cruz-Araneta, city engineer Armand Andres, city security force chief ret. Maj. Nicolas Amparo, landscaper Antonio Lerma and Lim’s chief of staff and media bureau chief Ric de Guzman, the mayor, Tolentino and Singson all agreed not only to restore the seawall and baywalk area to their original form but to make them better and more beautiful and resistant to strong waves.

With the city government of Manila , MMDA and DPWH to be jointly undertaking the project, Lim called for the meeting to make sure that all agencies involved will come to an agreement when it comes to the details of the work that will be done.

“We also hope that the rehabilitation work will be finished before Christmas, so that those attending dawn masses will be able to promenade in the baywalk after mass, should they choose to do so,” Lim said.

The mayor, Tolentino and Singson, still joined by the said city officials, then proceeded to the baywalk along Roxas Boulevard to discuss the details of the planned rehabilitation work as they traversed the area from the US Embassy up to near Quirino Avenue .

So far, Lim said it has been agreed that the flooring to be utilized in the area should have a rough finishing, to ensure that it will not be slippery especially when wet.

The mayor also directed Andres to use powder-coated lampposts as suggested by Singson, who said that such lampposts are resistant to rust and therefore last longer.

Lim suggested that the work begin with the area fronting the Malate Church , since Sunday church-goers usually stroll in the baywalk with their families after hearing masses or eating together in the restaurants dotting the area

The mayor said Singson has given the assurance that the baywalk area will not only be restored but modified and beautified to a world-class status.

for some reason that image site above is not pulling up at our office PC, maybe at home it will ... :colgate:

but regarding what you said, my opinion is, it doesn't take so much time and effort to create a fake photo these days ..., maybe someone in the US Navy did that, maybe not from them, we don't know ...

at that distance on a horizontal perspective, St Francis would never appear that huge nor it would even be visible, the same distance on a HIGHER ELEVATION, it could be visible but not that huge, could appear so small, and if the photo was taken on a higher elevation, then why it doesn't appear like more of a bird's eye view, right ? :colgate:

:colgate: kuha mo? :colgate:

Wala namang dinagdag buildings sa photo ng US Navy. Pag nasa manila bay ka, yan talaga ang view ng buong metro manila skyline on a 'clear' day.

Antipolo vantage point:

Yang sinasabi mong 'genuine' photo ay naka extreme close up at nasa MoA / Folk arts ang vantage point.

at that distance on a horizontal perspective, St Francis would never appear that huge nor it would even be visible, the same distance on a HIGHER ELEVATION, it could be visible but not that huge, could appear so small, and if the photo was taken on a higher elevation, then why it doesn't appear like more of a bird's eye view, right ? :colgate:

this will give you an idea

look how prominent the WTC towers in this photo in the background as if the statue of liberty is very close to the towers.

pinag-uusapan dito view from the bay not from Antipolo boy, yang pinost mo na yan, yan ang totoo, di ba hindi na kita ang ST. Francis?

let me add, if you don't mind ty. :D at depende po sa focal length ng lens na ginamit :) tawag dito in photography, Perspective Distortion as a result of different angles of view ng mga lenses.

example: pics below are taken on the same spot using different focal lengths.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e5/Focal_length.jpg/220px-Focal_length.jpg

another example of photos taken on the same spot using lenses with different focal lengths (observe the background):

100mm
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/16/Sameframe_100mm_f8.jpg

70mm
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4f/Sameframe_70mm_f8.jpg

50mm
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/Sameframe_50mm_f8.jpg

28mm
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0e/Sameframe_28mm_f8.jpg

^^ as per above examples, the wider the focal length, the farther the background seems to appear.

^^Very good anakngpasig. It is used if we want to focus on the subject but letting the background appear as is or we want to focus on the subject and letting only some parts of the background to appear or we want to cut something out from the background. In your first set of examples, the pink tumbler should have been taken with the same sizes while the blue one becomes smaller as the focal length changes in order to be credible. Our trainer at Basic Photography used for this example a picture of a woman standing at LRT waiting area with a large clock at the background. The next picture shows the same woman at the same area (same size, taken from the same place) but the clock seemed smaller and farther. Also, some other details and forms at the background were included in the picture.

The controversial Manila banner is a fact seems a hoax, though, it's very hard to tell.

50mm is the perfect normal lens in my opinion for full-frame cameras. 50mm emulates what our eyes see. but many would argue it's 35mm especially if you use an APS-C format camera. 50mm was my first prime lens and I use it on an APS-C camera but the crop factor makes it seem like a ~70mm without the perspective distortion.
