View Full Version : Maputo and Beira videos in colour of the 60´s and early 70´s
Matthias Offodile August 13th, 2007, 07:34 PM Before some people accuse me of glorifying the past, no I AM NOT. But as this is a forum concerning urban development, we have to take the past into account, too. Moreover, I have been to other sub-forums and see that people are also showing old pics about urban development/planning.
Hopefully, we can look at the videos not from a colonial perspective but from the perspective of proper city planning in Africa.
In fact, Maputo was a very neatly planned, organized and pleasant city....after looking at the videos I understand why Bob Dylan once sang a song about Maputo. Btw, the songs and melodies attached to the video are really romantic, too!

Thanks Matthias. I have seen some of these videos and they are impressive about the accomplishments of the Portuguese in Angola and Moçambique before 1975. Before I saw them I was not aware of this as the Western media focused on the repression under Portuguese rule during the time of the Caetano military dictatorship. I had the perception of backwardness until I saw these videos posted on various websites.
Matthias Offodile August 13th, 2007, 07:42 PM Maputo at night (with all its bars, nightclubs, what a glitz and sparkle just like Las vegas at the end you see Maputo´s open wide avenues and cafés and parks among other things)

StormShadow August 13th, 2007, 08:06 PM Excellent videos and thanks, Matt. But be aware that the "colonial talk" is bound to happen even though the thread represents past urbanity to contrast. lol
Matthias Offodile August 13th, 2007, 08:19 PM Maputo (more street views, more downtown views, more city parks, views from the air on Maputo, the port, looking at Maputo from sea)

Matthias Offodile August 13th, 2007, 08:31 PM Maputo (This is my favourite, it also shows the side streets, the theatres, cafés, the wonderful corniche and its side streets, Maputo markets and much much more)

popa1980 August 14th, 2007, 07:47 PM Maputo together with the Angolan cities were probably the most beautiful cities in Sub-Suharan Africa. My Indian friend's family left there after independece and they always reminence of home. I hope as Africa develops these beautiful colonial structures will be maintained.
I still think in Africa as a whole, Algiers is in a class off its own when it comes to beauty.
popa1980 August 14th, 2007, 07:50 PM The hospitals internet system wont let me see it!
There is a book called 'recordacoes de Lourenco Marques' (Memories of Maputo), but its only available in Portuguese and I've been trying to get my hand on it for a while. Its a photo book of various shots of this beautiful city.
