View Full Version : BP Tower, Cleveland
james2390 July 21st, 2003, 10:26 AM 201m/ 658ft
completed 1989
45 floors
designed by Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum
The BP tower was built as the headquarters for Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio), and renamed when Sohio merged with British Petroleum. At one time, the Williamson Building and the Burnham and Root-designed Cuyahoga Building stood at the site. The BP Tower features multiple setbacks at its top which are intended to lessen its visual impact on the nearby Terminal Tower. BP Tower also features an 8-story atrium, one of Cleveland’s largest, with numerous fountains and artwork throughout. BP Tower is the third tallest building in Cleveland and Ohio.

Nice :) The 'v' shape of the building reminds me a bit of centrepoint tower, in London.

Lmichigan July 21st, 2003, 08:06 PM I really like this one. I like the setbacks along the side, and how despite being so wide it seems to soar. The colors also work for it. But with most of these PoMo building it lacks a substantial amount of detail. I would have liked to see more done with the top, and perhaps some kind of repeated ornamintation on the facade.
I give it an 8.

Facade is a bit dull but I must say those setbacks are awesome! They cast interesting shadows on the structure depending on the position of the sun too.
renell August 12th, 2003, 06:13 PM 7/10 pretty interesting on the design side. on the cladding side, not so sure

I cant get really enthusiastic, but there are good elements here. the setbacks are nice, the overall shape is interesting and not too boring. but... the colors are not my taste, and somehow the building can't keep my attention for a longer time than 30 seconds. and i have no concentration problem or something.
Winus August 12th, 2003, 06:38 PM Sorry, I don't like it.
Gustavo August 13th, 2003, 06:05 PM Me neither, why brown??!! 5/10

New Jack City August 20th, 2003, 08:53 PM 7/10...The color is very dull, making the skyscraper boring. The architect didn't use the setbacks and unique shape to his advantage.
Roch5220 August 20th, 2003, 11:35 PM I like it. 8/10
SUNNI August 24th, 2003, 05:57 AM just doesnt fix in my eyes..

airsickpenthousedweller October 2nd, 2003, 11:48 AM Exactly the right amount of modesty in this -therefore- pretty decent design.

james2390 May 31st, 2004, 05:25 AM This an example of PoMo done right. Just imagine how it would look in a modern skyline such as Atlanta, Dallas, or Seattle's.
DamienK July 9th, 2004, 12:40 PM Looks like a chiselled piece of stone. 7/10
steel October 11th, 2004, 08:06 PM Quite bland.
SkyscraperStrasbourg October 11th, 2004, 08:24 PM 8/10 nice architecture for a 80's building.I made some shots of this building.
David3820 October 14th, 2004, 12:46 AM Good average one but it needs to be taller being that bulky. 6.5/10
empersouf October 18th, 2004, 11:25 PM Nice shape, but a bit fat. 7.5
Jasonhouse October 21st, 2004, 01:46 AM This was a favorite of mine when I first saw it, but getting an education has soured my opinion.
A nice tower, but the budget constraints are evident in the way the facade is carried out. Very mundane. The axial symmetry creates some nice faceting, and ties the building to the street grid. Also, the setbacks make for a nice PoMo nod to history. But something should have been done to make the tower's tripartite arrangement more evident. Perhaps clad the ziggurat-like top with the same glass with smoked glazing as is found on the canopy covering the atrium?
Nice design, but they cheaped out.
7.5/10
SChristopher October 22nd, 2004, 03:52 AM I like it, a little blocky, buuut it has nice lines and looks solid. 7/10
Sitol447 November 2nd, 2004, 07:14 PM 7/10 - Not very nice.
Monkey November 12th, 2004, 11:15 PM EXCELLENT setbacks and a nice facade that looks good from every angle.
I think it's a wonderful design, well-proportioned and very 'solid' looking. Judging by the photos the building seems to be in a good location too. I also like the low-rise element, adjoining the main tower.
9/10
Labtec November 13th, 2004, 01:18 AM I remember growing up this was called the Sohio building before BP bought it. My 2nd favorite behind terminal tower in cleveland.. 9 / 10

Tall and statuesque, but also ho-hum.......a little more imagination and this could have been a superlative tower!
