Orfeo August 15th, 2007, 05:09 AM http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/4122/sf5vf6.jpg
Interesting anyway
22 level development (of unknown height as the plans are too blury) proposed by Shafston College, next to their accomodation tower. Will include lecture theatres, classrooms, staff offices and shops in the base, 144 apartments in the main tower.

KJBrissy August 15th, 2007, 06:16 AM Wow...How very unique.
Bris05 August 15th, 2007, 07:05 AM What a great looking building.:banana2:
OZZY NICK August 15th, 2007, 07:05 AM How very revolting. it looks like a space age football :gaah:
Aussie Bhoy August 15th, 2007, 07:25 AM Looks OK, and is definitly an improvement on the present 6-7 level 70's style old hotel that is on that site.
chowie August 15th, 2007, 09:55 AM is kevin hayes the architect for this job?
OZZY NICK August 15th, 2007, 10:50 AM actually i change my mind - it looks like a fat penguin...
I worry these types of modern buildings will look stupid in like 20 or 30 years. i prefer timeless and sophisticated, much like Brisbane Sq. or Waterfront Place, Stamford plaza even. But this doesnt even look sophisticated, it just looks stupid.
BrizzyChris August 15th, 2007, 03:49 PM I don't mind it actually.
Leesome August 15th, 2007, 08:59 PM Love the base!!
BrisbaneROCKS August 16th, 2007, 01:27 AM Just the sort of effort and imagination Brisbane needs. Fantastic.
Aussie Bhoy August 16th, 2007, 01:47 AM Here is the location, so it's a huge improvement.
Shafston campus seems to be getting pretty big, I go jogging around this area and there are lots of students about, it seems very popular with Asian overseas students.

gerbilus August 16th, 2007, 03:01 AM I like it
Brissy4me August 16th, 2007, 03:56 AM I like it. It seems fitting for the area and a new architectural design.
Aussie Bhoy August 16th, 2007, 03:57 AM Couple more taken this morning whilst driving by

neilo63 August 16th, 2007, 09:43 AM Hahahah it's been said, Fat Penguin. But its fitting for the area, its different, it doesn't seem cheap and it's a hell of alot better than what is there now. I hope the council DOESN'T cut the height either, if they can't have height in KP theres no hope anywhere.
Messed Up August 16th, 2007, 09:47 AM Height shouldn't be a problem. There are already 24 story towers in the area. It does look like a penguin and is a bit gimmicky so in a way it would suit the Gold Coast. It would probably look better if it wasn't symmetrical in it design. Will certainly be iconic and will get a mixed reaction from people about its appearance.
Ausilencer August 18th, 2007, 07:41 AM I like it too - interesting and controversial.
KJBrissy September 8th, 2007, 03:56 PM This will get through council fine I'd imagine.
BTW it has lecture rooms, offices, student accommodation and 2 penthouses lol.
KJBrissy November 8th, 2007, 01:14 PM Should this not be added to Emporis?
;)
BrizzyChris November 8th, 2007, 03:06 PM What's the status now, approved?
KJBrissy November 8th, 2007, 10:25 PM Proposed still. Shouldn't be long before approval I would imagine.
CULWULLA November 8th, 2007, 10:37 PM what an unusal looking tower. love it. fat fella with a cap on .lol
looks maybe 70m+
Brizzy-Mike November 8th, 2007, 11:29 PM Its comical.
Anberlin November 18th, 2007, 10:06 AM How very revolting. it looks like a space age football :gaah:
Agreed!
Brizzy-Mike November 18th, 2007, 11:30 PM And it's tubby.
Rubber Duck November 19th, 2007, 12:20 AM I prefer to think of it as the slightly overweight cousin of the gherkin.

TOCC November 19th, 2007, 12:27 AM interesting design.. it seems like it would age quickly though.
Melanie B November 20th, 2007, 05:17 AM 'The Penguin' how antipodenian
Brizzy-Mike November 20th, 2007, 06:04 AM Could be a concrete Kookie
KJBrissy June 26th, 2008, 11:41 AM Height above ground level is 72m.
Also there looks to be about 100 submissions against this development!!! Not very liked by the locals!
BrisbaneROCKS June 27th, 2008, 04:06 AM Entirely predictable though. Slam anything different. I hope this gets through. Would be a welcome relief from the horrid boxes infiltrating KP.
Simulate July 7th, 2008, 08:25 AM Looks like a cheap rip off of Burj Dubai.
SEQ92 July 7th, 2008, 08:28 AM 1. It looks nothing like Burj Dubai!
2. I think it looks revolting. An eyesore.
3. Pray to god it doesn't get approved.

It's better than the present building

SEQ92 July 7th, 2008, 01:01 PM To be honest I would even rather the current building on that site. This proposed one needs a massive redesign, its disgusting.
Leesome July 7th, 2008, 07:00 PM love the base though!
BrisbaneROCKS July 8th, 2008, 12:22 AM To be honest I would even rather the current building on that site. This proposed one needs a massive redesign, its disgusting.
What exactly is 'disgusting' about it? The fact you can't get your head around it's shape?
I think it's great for what it is, and a massive improvement from what's there now. It matches the youthful and 'groovy' character of the university culture of the area.
SEQ92 July 8th, 2008, 01:35 AM ^^ it looks revolting and depressing! dark colour with a weird shape. do they want uni students to CS or something??
Orfeo July 8th, 2008, 06:41 AM ^
I'd rather an interesting building, even if it isn't perfect, than a borring box.
jellyman July 8th, 2008, 12:57 PM Its Darth Vader's penguin.
JVogt July 9th, 2008, 01:13 PM I like it.

Sorry, I meant Burj Al Arab.
n3pan3pa July 15th, 2008, 03:46 AM Does anyone know where it's up to yet?
neilo63 November 12th, 2008, 04:17 AM For all those who love boring architecture with token gestures of flair...
NEW DA IS UP!

Samuel77 November 12th, 2008, 04:49 AM i preferred the old design. At the least the old design was different to anything we currently have in Brisbane. This is still ok but it looks the same as a lot of buildings going up in recent years.
KJBrissy November 12th, 2008, 05:22 AM Agree.
MyFavco November 12th, 2008, 05:32 AM Looks like they have dropped the Fat Penguin concept. Can't imagine why!?
I was looking forward to more nicknames for this tower. My favourites from this thread:
fat penguin
space age football
slightly overweight cousin of the gherkin
Darth Vader's penguin
Brizzy-Mike November 12th, 2008, 08:04 AM The other one was vaguely like a robotic koodaburra. Would have been intersting. This one is ok.
BrisbaneROCKS November 13th, 2008, 02:54 AM What a massive let down, and the aggressive conservative movement in Brisbane wins yet again. Oh but remember, it's for the better of the city.. pfft
scottsimmons80 November 13th, 2008, 04:02 AM Really preferred the old design, what a shame to see it canned.
neilo63 May 21st, 2009, 12:16 AM Looks like the Government don't appreciate the bulk. I think it's inevitable development but maybe there's something they can do by making the tower higher on massive columns and not starting the first floor until about 5levels above ground. I think the podium is the major issue, it will basically appear as two boxes with towers atop roughly the same shape right next to each other.
