Project Brief

The Khan Shatyry Entertainment Centre in Astana will become a dramatic civic focal point for the capital of Kazakhstan. The soaring structure, at the northern end of the new city axis, rises from a 200m elliptical base to form the highest peak on the skyline of Astana.


Project Description

Khan Shatyry (Royal Marquee) is a giant transparent tent currently under construction in Astana, capital city of Kazakhstan. The architectural project was unveiled by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev on 9 December 2006.

The 150m-high (500ft) tent has a 200m elliptical base covering 100,000 square meters. Underneath the tent, an area larger than 10 football stadiums, will be an urban-scale internal park, shopping and entertainment venue with squares and cobbled streets, a boating river, shopping centre, minigolf and indoor beach resort. It is being made from ETFE suspended on a network of cables strung from a central spire. The transparent material allows sunlight through which, in conjunction with air heating and cooling systems maintain an internal temperature between 15-30°C in the main space and 19-24°C in the retail units, while outside the temperature varies between -35 to +35°C across the year.

This will be the second project designed by UK architect Norman Foster (of Foster and Partners, collaborating architects are Linea, Gultekin and UMO), who has recently built a giant glass pyramid in Astana. The construction of the tent-city, expected to take a year(probably a bit more), will be carried out by the Turkish company Sembol.

Kazakhstan has unveiled a new architectural project for its capital Astana - a giant transparent tent that will contain an indoor city.

The 150m-high (500ft) dome, designed by UK architect Norman Foster, will be built in just over a year.

The tent is being made from special material that absorbs sunlight to create the effect of summer inside.

I must say I'm not really impressed with this design of Foster.
It seems kind of stupid to build a structure like that only to house some stores, a minigolf and a pool.

The Residences at the Khan Shatyr will be developed on 6,792 m2 of land next to the Khan Shatyr Shopping and Entertainment Center on the City Center Axis with views of the Presidential Palace. The total construction area is 50,802 m2 including 40,919 m2 building construction and 9,983m2 parking construction. The proposed residences will have direct access through covered walkways to the Khan Shatyr Shopping and Entertainment Center that features retail shops, restaurants, movie theaters, fitness center, SPA and other leisure facilities such as swimming pools, indoor botanic gardens and ponds offering warm atmosphere year around.

The Residence at the Khan Shatyr defines the new limits of luxury and comfort in Astana. There are various kinds of residences depending on the needs and desires of the homebuyers. However, regardless of the size of the residence there is the exclusive luxury and the privilege of the services offered at the Khan Shatyr Shopping and Entertainment Center. The residences at the Khan Shatyr will have direct access through covered bridges to the Khan Shatyr Shopping and Entertainment Center so that you don’t have to worry about -30° C or the hot summer weather outside.
There are various types of residences offered at the Residences at the Khan Shatyr:

All the residences will feature contemporary design that maximizes the functional space and natural light. The residences will be furnished with high gloss contemporary kitchens and designer bathrooms with Jacuzzis, top of the line appliances including built in wall ovens and stoves, microwave oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, and washer and dryer. Each residence will have its own climate control system. The security of the residences will be provided by state of the art automation and security systems. There will also be wireless internet connection throughout the building. The Residences at the Khan Shatyr also offers social features, luxury and privileges to its residents.
All the residences will have direct access to the concierge desk where they can get the maid, valet and dry cleaning service at their doors. You can also get your daily food shopping through the concierge.

The tent will be built within the New City limits and will be clearly visible in the city's beautiful skyline.

Is there anything wrong with this? They thought of everything!

Beach! Pools! Park! Restaurants and shops! Cinema! Concert hall! Even minigolf... This is like city's main square in an enclosed building. All I can say is Wow!

^^ Уважаемый Айбек! Давай будем правильно писать теперь название столь грандиозного и величественного развлекательного центра в Астане! А именно как "Khan Shatyr" (Хан Шатыр). Так сказал сам Президент Назарбаев во время акиматовской встречи. Он делал замечания по поводу неправильного произношения и писания этого объекта. И в данный момент все уже пишут именно в правильной версии "Khan Shatyr" или "Хан Шатыр"! И прошу тебя исправить неправильное писание этого названия в твоем трэде на международке! :cheers2:

Very nice. Seems very ornate and architecturally complicated for what is essentially a shopping and entertainment centre though.

^^ It's very ornate and cost a hefty $260 mln to built. It's not your typical shopping mall though. It is more of a prestige symbol than anything else. An icon. A landmark to write tourist guides about. Also an opportunity for a new wave of Westerns brands to enter the Central Asian market.

I'd love to lie on that beach all nice & warm when it's the middle of winter and -20 outside :cheers:
