View Full Version : Hardman Street Developments
buggedboy August 16th, 2007, 10:14 AM Just noticed that a new bar is opening soon next door to Subway and part of St Luke's Court.
It's called Rivva (or something) and is a bar/ice cream combo, which sounds like an interesting idea.
Finally, the ghost of Bar One Eleven has been laid to rest.
1878EFC August 16th, 2007, 12:16 PM off topic but talking about Ice cream anyone noticed the nice little ice cream parlour next to American Pizza slice facing the Met Quarter, it looks smart.

I'll have to check that out. I'd also love to see places like that open later. If we're going to have a truly 'continental' feel to the city centre we need to have decent alternatives to pubs and clubs open much later in the evening. Not just shops but coffee shops and ice cream parlours.. my wife and I would love to pop into town for a summers evening stroll and stop off for ice cream and coffee on the way home. I'd even tollerate a Hagen Das outlet if it gave us that! Perhaps when the cinema opens it'll change the evening culture in the city centre as lot more people will be milling around between 6-9pm and hopefully the shops and cafes will catch on.
buggedboy August 20th, 2007, 10:25 AM I went to simsims again the otehr day and apparently its open until 9-10 pm now, which a definitely an improvement.
T0M August 20th, 2007, 01:53 PM Great news, hopefully other coffee shops etc will take their lead..
boychild August 21st, 2007, 01:59 PM Bar one eleven was awful... forgot about that gaff. Any idea whats happening on the car park on the corner of Hope and Hardman street facing the Phil? Seen the hoarding up saying something is happening but never got a chance to stop. Hope they keep the trees!!

I think you mean the site that Maghull Developments have bought from JMU (the Law Faculty). Nowt will happen on this or any other Maghull owned site until the move in 2008 of several different depts. to the new Design Academy. The law faculty itself goes into teh John Foster building I think.
buggedboy August 21st, 2007, 02:57 PM Bar One Eleven was indeed horrible..as was streets, no mater how many times it burned down. Also, Plumbers was an awful scally haven and Kirklands was where you hung out if you wanted to get stabbe.
All in all I think its safe to say Hardman st is better than it was. All they need is to get rid of the bargain booze.

The little independent book-shop was nice, as was the one on the corner of Seel St/Berry St.
Those are the things I look for in habitable cities..
buggedboy August 30th, 2007, 09:57 AM On a billboard on Hardman Street I noticed ahuge advert for a place called Geisha. It is opening on Hardman Street opposite Philharmonic Hall.
apparently its a club/bar/restaurant thing and the theme looks Japanese.
Ive never seen a bar take out such a huge, classy looking advert so maybe this is a pretty big project.
Interestingly, the location mentioned above suggests to me that it is the old Peoples Centre that is going to be used. Thats a big building. The only other place that it could be is the old police station on Hope St, but that's to be developed by the Hope Street Hotel.
The advert is next to Bargain Booze. See what you think.
buggedboy August 31st, 2007, 10:27 AM Geisha is apparently being run by the bods at Korova Corp.
which suggests a quality development. I'm quite excited about this one. :)
McGrath September 1st, 2007, 01:20 AM Has anybody else been to the 'Osqa' bar/restaurant/deli on Oldham Square between Leece St and Renshaw St?
I went there for the first time today and was impressed. although it was very quiet. One would assume, and hope, that it will pick up when the universities get going again.

Went past here the other day, looks like they've taken over the Varsity Bar which is next to the community college. Looking very smart from the outside.

I worked there between 98 - 01. good laugh actually, til I got caught with a lady in the staff loo but thats another tale!
Yeah, it does look smart doesnt it. Can't find an opening date though. A welcome addition to the local mix.
scouseyuppie01 September 6th, 2007, 01:06 AM There is going to be a large re-development of the car park to the rear of the Leece st post office. The owner wants to develop the site, but, as they are making alot from the parking, want to maintain that particular aspect of the site. So what he has asked a certain liverpool architects to is simply build around the carpark with commerical and residential, similar to what is being carried out at the Kings Dock Car Park.
The owner had approached the party that owns the empty plot next store to the Leece St post office that was cleared as part of Liverpool City Challenge in the 1990's. Based on the assumption there would be a quick sale, i had ran up the following images as part of an exercise that would see the car park run through to hardman st,taking the empty site with street facing residential, circulation from the car park and retail on the ground level.
The owner of the empty plot on Hardman St however have their own plans and are not to sell, approaching another architect to run up plans for a residential development only.
There will be large residential on these sites, all by different architects and developers, all of which relatively large in budget and will having a height and massing similar to that of bellways development on Oldham St for the councils precious continuity. Rumours are about however that the council have asked the owners to go higher and leaked info is showing a large number of bedroom s for this proposal, suggesting added height also......or shoe box rooms, one of the two.

McGrath September 7th, 2007, 11:15 PM I'd pay extra to have the Roscoe ans the Dispensary as neighbours, with the Pilgrim and Ye Cracke over the road.
So, who will win the fight to develop this site then?
Joe the red September 7th, 2007, 11:27 PM Roscoe Street should read Oldham Street.
Looks interesting but I might lose my cathedral view
Scarecrow September 8th, 2007, 10:11 AM Hopefully you'll get some exhibitionist totty living opposite, who likes to leave the curtains open. :)
Joe the red September 8th, 2007, 12:20 PM Anything would be better than the smackheads and winos in the YMCA that used to be my neighbours.
Whose bright idea was it to move them to the Business District?:bash:
buggedboy September 10th, 2007, 10:34 AM Went into Geisha yesterday. It is really impressive and well worth a visit. They do a lot of far eastern influenced dished, many of which are under a tenner. Lots of girlies in tight fitting oriental outfits too, which I rarely complain about.

Damn, I was hoping to get the scoop on this one! Dragged my wife in on Saturday night, and was also impressed. Loved the decor (although they didn't seem fussy about mixing and matching their 'Eastern influences' - with Japanese and Chinese cultures being readily interchanged) and especially the cherry blossom tree in the middle of the bar! Although we only stayed for one drink we had a look at the menu which looks good, both the daytime and evening meals look very tempting and are relatively reasonably priced considering the type of venue. We both commented that it was just good to see something different from the generic 'Varsity' student bar it's replaced, and like 'em or loath 'em it's good that Liverpool are producing their own unique bars to match anything in the country.

I've been buzzin away waiting for this bugger to open since I first heard about it.
Two new bars and two cruise liners over one weekend. Not a bad turn around.
Scarecrow September 11th, 2007, 09:51 AM There's a Varsity bar underneath the Neptune. I remember it was the Old monk, but they changed it to something else for a while too.
Joe the red September 11th, 2007, 10:25 AM It became the Barracuda and used to be packed. The Varsity has been like the Marie Celeste but the students are starting to drift back......

buggedboy October 26th, 2007, 05:09 PM I can't wait for this project to be completed. It's going to look ace.
Hopefully by September 08 it'll be finished and we should also know what is going to replace the student buildings that are emptying as a result of the Design Academy being completed.
I'm anticipating at least one hotel, the building next door to the HSH on teh other side, gonig towards the Anglican.
Also, Cubit House is being done up too, with flats above commerical space. Ideal for another cafe/restaurant.

The Quarter already a fab place to go... noticed a deli and cafe just next to it and over the road from those another cafe... and all doing tables outside... it is such a really nice place to be as well. These are all just around the corner from Cubit House. :)

Call me old fashioned but `Plummers`(?) in it`s day was actually one of the best bar/resturants in the city in the 1980`s if we are actually talking about the same place, `Streets` also had it`s moments (Baltimoor Street / Pilgrim Street) and `Kirklands` was a legend well before the rest of Liverpool city centre reinvented itself into places like `Concert Square`, Kirklands in it`s day was actually very much the business and the current blue bottle in a loaf of shit is exactly that IMHO.
