View Full Version : #019 l John Hancock Center l CHICAGO l 344m l 100fl
D-Mac October 8th, 2002, 03:27 AM John Hancock Center
Chicago, USA
HEIGHT: 344m/1,127 feet
FLOORS: 100 floors
COMPLETION: 1969
ARCHITECT: Skidmore, Owings & Merril (SOM)
Situated on prestigious North Michigan Avenue, the 100-story, 2.8 million square feet (260,000 square meters) multi-use complex includes 711 apartment units, ranging from efficiencies to four-bedroom luxury residences; 812,000 square feet of office space; and 300,000 square feet of commercial entrance lobbies. Restaurants, health clubs, a swimming pool and ice skating rink, and a transmitter for Chicago's major television stations are other features of "Big John".
The tapered form of the tower developed from programmatic and structural requirements. Commercial spaces occupy the base of the tower while parking, office, and residential zones rise above. Steel exterior columns and spandrel beams create a structural tube that is reinforced by clearly articulated diagonal steel members and structural floors that meet those diagonals and corner columns. No high-strength steel has been used, allowing less than thirty pounds of steel to support each square foot of floor area. The total result is a simple and highly efficient system for a structure of this height. The building is clad in black aluminum accented with bronze, glare-reducing glass, and bronze-colored aluminum window frames; public spaces feature travertine marble and dark granite.

DrumCorpsAlum October 8th, 2002, 03:36 AM 8/10. I like it but the shortened antenna looks like crap.
RafflesCity October 9th, 2002, 07:49 PM 9/10
I love its shape, size and colour. The cross-bracing really make it very original. The antennae dont really bother me. This is just such a BIG thing!
Jasonhouse October 9th, 2002, 08:09 PM Perhaps they are repairing the antenna?
Either way, I give it an 8.5/10
Steely Dan October 9th, 2002, 09:47 PM yes, j-house. y'all can go ahead and change your votes, the antena thing is temporary, not a permanent change. according to skyscrapers.com editor tom-in-chicago, the missing piece of the eastern antena will be replaced by a new one at some point in the not too distant future.
for those who have yet to vote, don't let the antena thing alter your vote, it is just temporary.
and of course i give it a 10/10, perhaps one of the most brilliant examples of exposed structural system as bold design gesture, right up there with the bank of china, or maybe i just have some strange and weird affinity for "x"s.
10/10
Ersh October 9th, 2002, 10:11 PM I remember first reading about this in a National Geographic magazine a long time ago and it's always captured my interest. My fave in Chicago...9/10
Caledon1981 October 10th, 2002, 04:05 AM amazing tower . . i heard its gonna be on the Illinois quarter!! 9/10
TYW October 10th, 2002, 05:21 AM 7 / 10
nice but not good enough
hypermount October 10th, 2002, 08:55 AM 5/10
X-seed 4000 October 10th, 2002, 09:30 AM If this building had a twin it would have better represented the U.S's power by being our WTC!
9.5/10!
AG October 10th, 2002, 10:59 AM The slanting walls of the building are good, but the antenna and colour of the building could use improvements.
8/10
oztraelian October 10th, 2002, 12:24 PM I'm not a footballer, but I feel a strong urge to kick a goal between those antennas.
Gets bonus marks for age & GENUINE height. 9/10 - I'd give it a 10 if it werent for the abysmal concrete neighbour.
Patrick October 10th, 2002, 03:38 PM i like it especially the double spire 8/10
Sunflower October 10th, 2002, 09:43 PM good but not the best. 7.5/10
SteelCity32 October 10th, 2002, 10:29 PM Very good. Fits Chicago Well. 9/10
Muse October 10th, 2002, 10:35 PM A Chicagoan masterpiece:
9
Just out of interest i.e. FYI, Skidmore Owings & Merrill were consultants and were involved with the design of 140 William St (BHP House) in Melbourne circa 1968; the inluences in its design are apparent eg. Cross bracing, black glass. It was completed around the same time the John Hancock Center had been.

tayser October 12th, 2002, 05:06 AM 8, I love it, for a reason similar to that of museumb's post above, similar designs, and 140 william is just an absolute classic in Melbourne ;)

SUNNI October 12th, 2002, 06:28 AM 5, its OK
CTroyMathis October 21st, 2002, 04:53 AM I love this building and it's exposed structural might it displays on the Chicago skyline. I adore the article National Geographic magazine once did on the lives of people living inside the building back in either the late eighties or early nineties - whenever. There's a lot of pride with this building!
9.
enzo October 21st, 2002, 11:20 AM Masterful really. Would get a 10 from me if it not for the ugly red/white antennas. That's the FAA for you!
9.5/10
Steven November 4th, 2002, 08:55 PM If you are looking just at apperience this building is boring to look at.
I gave it a 6.0
Liz L November 5th, 2002, 04:28 AM 8/10 - Big John manages to get beyond the box with the X bracings and the tapered shape - not to mention proud, soaring height - I've been there, and the view from the observation deck is awesome. And there's a great restaurant just a floor or two below...:eat: The sunken plaza on the west side works well, too.
Bobdreamz November 5th, 2002, 08:19 AM this is a classic in American architecture...a one of a kind & recognizable around the world...the design is brutal with it's X bracing but manages to overcome that....it is an amazing piece of architecture...9.5/10.
De Snor November 6th, 2002, 09:47 PM a great landmark , would be better without those ugly antennas !!
skyway November 7th, 2002, 03:09 AM very impressive
the hancock building is one of my favourites!
9.5/10
Sonie November 19th, 2002, 07:20 PM 10 !!
my most favorite scraper on the planet !
parody24 December 12th, 2002, 09:17 AM I've been to the top of this building 2 times. This is my
favorite from Chicago. I think the view from here is better
than the Sears Tower. What a great Chicago landmark.
Daniel8ty8 December 12th, 2002, 09:39 PM The Hancock Center is one of my classical favorite skyscrapers. Much better looking then the Sears Tower or the Amoco Building, I'm sure that a good deal of Chicagoans must be proud of their achievement...
8.5
London bloke December 15th, 2002, 05:00 PM Big and dominating.Compliments Sears well.
breezyboy69 December 16th, 2002, 04:28 AM its ok but nothing exciting...6/10
UrbanLandscape December 16th, 2002, 07:37 AM *SIGH!*
I miss the old days, when the antennae were symmetrical...and no matter how ugly it is, it is huge, it is tall, and I would give a lot of things to live on the 92nd floor of a building!
Wu-Gambino February 22nd, 2003, 01:47 AM 10/10
It doesn't get much better than this. It is massive and powerfull, yet it is so simple. The antennas are great. Very impressive in person and it defines Chicago.
Dydd February 22nd, 2003, 04:13 PM Very impressive! but this is cold & dark ligths, texture,& form! : 6
The Messiah February 24th, 2003, 12:44 AM A great landmark for chicago! :okay: It truly is
9.0/10
proudmelbourneguy February 24th, 2003, 12:59 PM Funny this tower either is loved or hated... And i'm one of the people who love it, just don't understand how people can find it boring. One of my faves 10
Francis20 February 25th, 2003, 01:33 PM i give high merits to buildings that serve as landmarks. when you see them, u associate them with the city. this one is a good landmark!
9/10!
Monkey March 29th, 2003, 10:03 AM Naw. Somehow I can't get excited about this putative beauty at all. The antennae are ridiculous whether of even length or not, and to me the whole thing gives a somber, austere impression.
A kind 6.5
Calilover89 April 1st, 2003, 07:57 AM I only gave it a 8.5/10 cuz they didn't build it any taller...other than that it's a classic!
Wisma April 4th, 2003, 12:53 PM 9/10. I love X bracing. Just an awesom tower.
Chi-town April 5th, 2003, 06:45 AM Just so everyone knows, the antennae are the same length again now.
huaiwei April 8th, 2003, 04:20 PM When other buildings gets compared to one single building, this building ought to be a class of its own. Well this is one of it. An 8/10. :)
Evergrey April 11th, 2003, 04:02 AM 9 Extremely distinctive building... brilliant for a residential... black and beautiful
airsickpenthousedweller April 16th, 2003, 05:52 AM Nice, the fact that it's residential makes it more interesting.
TropicalSQ744 May 5th, 2003, 05:58 PM I really don't know.. One moment I like this scraper one moment I hate it.. Kinda like a love-hate relationship i guess.. :bash: Anyways, I find the tapered shape of the building very unique.. Together with the X braces and black looking cladding it's got even more character.. :) It's one of it's kind in the world.. Very orginal looking :D
9/10
BGT May 8th, 2003, 04:09 AM I had to give it a 10. Here are my photos of the tower:

New Jack City May 10th, 2003, 01:34 AM 9/10...One of, if not the best black building in the world. I love the X design going through the building, the sun shines on it nice sometimes too. I took points off because of the antennas, red and white antennas for a black skyscraper? Not working.
rj2uman May 19th, 2003, 08:50 PM I love black boxy monolithic bldgs! 9/10

they're not red & white anymore
Although many people I've talked to miss the old red & white antennae... very distinctive. Red, white & black go together well enough, I think. Those where the colors of the old German Reich flag, for one..
circle33 July 29th, 2003, 05:59 PM Simple, black, classic.

Nice tower but it could have been better.
Trances November 11th, 2003, 12:45 PM Struts are it major feature with all the cross sections so there is always a strong control over the direction your eyes follow when you look at it
8
trussedtube November 13th, 2003, 06:55 PM Easily a 10. And pay no attention to my name, because I'm not biased at all. :-)
But really, how can anyone with any taste give it anything less than an 8? I can't think of any building that achieves its level of efficiency and economy in so many aspects: aesthetically, structurally, programatically -- satisfying requirements simultaneously in all these aspects with the same architectural elements.
The cross bracing provides strength with minimal steel requirements, while simultaneously being one of the most distinctive architectural elements on any skyscraper: projecting a muscular image of sturdiness, and at the same time leading the eye up the structure as it soars into the sky.
The tapering profile projects an image of structural stability, yet slenderizes the massive structure into one of the more graceful supertalls. Simultaneously, the taper makes for an efficient satisfaction of mixed use requirements, with smaller floor plates appropriate for residential levels above the larger floor plates suitable for commercial levels.
The JHC has so much structural strength at so little cost, and so much visual interest with out execessive, forced decoration/ornamentation; an economy of expression lacking in so many buildings -- and unfortunately in this post as well.
The nearly 12% of the voters who gave this <= to a 3 are morons.

7 World Trade May 7th, 2004, 03:18 AM the trapizopidal shape really helped to keep this one from being too boring or bulky. definitely a good chitown landmark, but i feel it's a bit too overrated, compared to the attention big stan gets.
in some of the pics, the steel facade looks somewhat aged. does the building really look like that close up?

My favorite in Chicago. I like the trapezoidal prism shape, really makes it fit in with anything, especially its local cluster. Nice combo with the sears tower, makes the skyline a touch menacing. Like the x shpaed bracing, and I miss the old atenae, or maybe I am just nostalgic. Still a master piece of black glass.

GetOnDaTrain October 20th, 2004, 07:22 PM 10/10. Sears Tower's cousin has its own style. I'm glad those cross steel bars keep John Hancock standing when excessive steel weight wasn't necessary. And the best views of Lake Michigan that are often blocked by Hancock itself viewed from Sears. Good thing it is residential too: if I had a million dollars and hate sprawling mansions, I would buy an apartment in this one. This is the other building in Chi-Town other buildings bow down to.

mk61 January 23rd, 2005, 09:09 AM In terms of height, its stunning - and those residential floors stacked up make it look titanic, but I'm not overly keen on the taper, and the x braces detract from the horizontal lines of the floors. Still, great building 8/10
chicago1988 January 27th, 2005, 04:38 AM It's,OK,8/10

You are oogly because you don't realize when this tower was built. It was cutting edge technology at the time small one.
get13 April 13th, 2005, 01:40 PM I love the faboulous design 9.5/10
DamienK April 17th, 2005, 03:15 PM A rare photo of the tower under construction, in the late 60s:
http://my.fit.edu/~rosiene/1965som.jpg
Justadude April 17th, 2005, 09:37 PM An outstanding building, especially in person. It's staggeringly large even on the Chicago skyline. I don't like dark towers either, but this has a monolithic feel that only a few architects would even have the guts and talent to try. And, it's one of the most recognizable buildings in the USA.
9.5/10
Pengui April 21st, 2005, 06:06 AM An impressive building ^^
manages to get out of the boxy style and actually do something interesting with black color.
The antennas are not helping, though.

360 Modena April 22nd, 2005, 01:58 PM 3^ WOW! interesting construction, but errrrr, it looks like a skeleton... those floor plates are tiny :( 8/10
Kevin J April 22nd, 2005, 08:14 PM 3^ WOW! interesting construction, but errrrr, it looks like a skeleton... those floor plates are tiny :( 8/10
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but if you're referring to the floor plates at the top, it may interest you to know that the reason for the tapering form of the building is so the lower floors could house offices, while the upper, smaller floors could house apartments. This mix of uses is still in operation today in this building, and of course in countless others now too and was quite revolutionary when the Hancock was built in 1968.
lakegz April 22nd, 2005, 09:45 PM ^^tiny floorplates? JHC has massive amounts of space.
a small comparison
JHC 260,000 sq meters of space
2IFC- 185,000 sq meters
Bank of China- 135,000 sq meters

Oriolus September 26th, 2005, 05:45 AM 8.5/10. Great building - it's just so brutally massive. Like Sears I think the antennae are an important part of the buildings appeal, as is the shape - if it didn't taper towards the top it would be a very ordinary skyscraper IMO.
UrbanSophist September 29th, 2005, 03:03 AM :) Truly a legend! 10/10

lancetop December 3rd, 2005, 11:35 PM Everyone is going to hate me for this :bash: but I think this building exemplifies the souless architecture of the 1960s and 1970s. I find it forboding, an uninspired variation of black glass box that looks fearsome on the skyline, unlike most of Chicago's stunning and elegant high-rise architecture:)
Is height the attraction on this one? It's massive. Massive and ugly >(
Too bad the lovely city of Chicago is scarred by this behemouth on the skyline :eek2:

JV_325i January 11th, 2006, 09:35 PM One of my favorite (if not THE favorite) buildings of all time. There are just too many great things going on with this building. The external bracing, aside from just looking amazingly cool, creates a texture for the building surface that is unmatched thus far in the skyscraper domain, hands down. In addition to the great texture, the color choice is absolutely perfect, truly something one has to see in person to appreciate; that incredible black. That ominous, immaculate, and menacing black. With it the building exudes class, elegance, and sheer power. The texture and the color combine in a way to give this building an absolutely impeccable finish. But what is a great finish without an equally great shape? Well luckily, the Hancock has one hell of a shape. The proportions created for this 100+ story monolith are flawless, with that subtle taper giving it incredible stance and authority. The twin white antenna complete the package to make this the perfect, unassailable brother to the Sears down the way.
9.5/10
Scruffy88 January 15th, 2006, 11:58 PM 9.5/10 My absolute favorite in Chicago. Its truly a piece of structural art

I HATE these type of responses from people. This is a discussion forum at least give reason as to what you don't like about it. Just saying a one liner is pointless or is he just trying to get a higher post rating. Give me a break "warnings"
Indica February 8th, 2006, 10:55 PM hands down, this is a 10.. not just for looks, but for function..
the top half is condos! if you have the money, you can live in this supertall.. you cant say that with many others, (for now)..

Actually they are quite reasonable, if not cheap! A studio 500-650sq Feet starts at 170 and one bedrooms start at about 290-300 plus assesments. But for such a world renown building its cheaper than most people might expect.
JBinCalgary February 9th, 2006, 06:12 AM this building is definately in my top 10
