View Full Version : Construction in your area.
Brummyboy92 August 17th, 2007, 09:32 PM I do not know if this has been done before, however this is my first thread and I hope people reply to it.
I want to know what construction is going on in your area, I will start off. I live in Kingstanding, there is not much going on at the moment. Kingsland primary school is being rebuilt, theres a mobile crane there I will get a pic of it soon. There is also plans to redevelop my school Cardinal wiseman catholic technology college, I have heard two plans. Plan one is to have extension onto the hall and rebuild the science and D.T department. Plan two the more exciting option is they want to move the school onto the field and the field where the school is now, I want plan two to happen. However I will not be there to see it Im leaving next year. I also have heard Kingstanding circle shopping centre will be knocked down and redone, oh and if you count the Asda on queslet road(dunno if I spelt that right) as Kingstaning there is soon to be an upstairs there.
In my Dads area, stechford I have not heard much. I can see a mobile crane in at the top of his road, but im not sure where it is. Apartments are planned opposite the mc donalds in the retail park, cannot remmember what its called. And the flats next to the poolway shopping park are being knocked down. Thanks god its a bloody eye saw.
Thats it from my areas for now and I will get pics soon, in the mean time what is going on in your areas
blahblah August 17th, 2007, 09:54 PM I'm pretty much living on a building site now. Barratt's haven't completely finished the estate I live on. They've still some landscaping and road laying to do.
Whatever it is that they're building at 6 ways is up to the 2nd floor now, so hopefully it won't be too long before the island itself gets the widening it desperately needs.
There's a new estate planned for the old MEB building which overlooks Brookvale park, but I've no idea where they're up to with that.
Other than that, I just long for the day that Erdington High Street meets Mr. Wrecking ball, becuase it's a shite hole.
smysticed August 17th, 2007, 10:02 PM I can think of a couple of things going on in Solihull. There's the rebuilding of Tudor Grange Swimming Pool, currently ongoing, which will provide a new 25m pool. There's also a smallish new office block UC in the town centre, nothing very interesting. Then of course there's the whole redevelopment of Chelmsley Wood, but I'm not too sure about that, so if anyone could provide details that would be welcome :)

They're building something between Erdington High Street and Sutton Road (I think - I know nothing about Erdington apart from tower blocks). I think it's new council offices? That is a big and imposing building, and the cladding don't look too bad either.
There's a great hunk of junk going on in Sutton Coldfield. Mainly apartments with ground floor retail. There's a big scheme in the town centre called Brassington Avenue which is quite exciting for the town. There's something going up at the Reddicap but I'm not sure what - there's a tower crane there nonetheless.
Sutton College is building yet another facility. I am not sure what it is.
I remember the site at Stechford. It was next to the snooker hall. My God it looked shabby 10 years ago, thank God it's demolished. It was unrecognisable when I saw it a few months ago - that was just because they demolished the buildings. Have they demolished the derelict pub opposite the BnQ yet? That shut just before the Yew Tree pub closed and that has been demolished and redeveloped.

They're doing WHAT?! They can't demolish the place, surely!? I think they're just redeveloping the shopping centre. I remember going to that place as kid. There was a massive supermarket there with a little cafe next to it. I vaguely remember wandering around the courtyard area through the exit of the supermarket. My God that place was shite.:ohno:
Brummyboy92 August 17th, 2007, 10:22 PM Erm yeah that nasty pub opposite B&Q has been demolished and is being cleared still. Its taking to long. And also has anyone seen all the construction in shard end, its becoming a nice area. However the houses they are building look a bit small.
smysticed August 17th, 2007, 10:23 PM Yeah, i know they're doing the shopping centre, but there's other stuff, like all the schools in the area are being rebuilt. Don't think they're actually going to knock it all down or anything. Hope not, anyway, all them towerblocks - Butterfield wouldn't be happy.

As I remember, the Yew Tree pub took all over 3 days to demolish. But then again, when it's been burned twice - half the job has already been done!

Damn right butterfrubs won't be happy! I doubt they'd do it anyway. Some of the construction was actually good quality and moving all those people would be a mammoth task!
Telfordboy August 18th, 2007, 01:20 AM 800+ plus houses in east Ketley, 800+ houses in Lightmoor, 3000+ homes in Lawley. Nothing too exciting althugh each of 'em gets their own local centre type bit as well.

Oh Yeah. Fogot about that. It is council offices and a new Jobcentre plus. The new job centre was finished yonks ago, but is still unoccupied!
feltip August 18th, 2007, 11:43 PM There is land remediation work going on Dogpool Lane, near to corner with Pershore Road in preparation for buildings. They have had to remove the infamous Japanese Knotweed and then leave part of the site as a bit of flood plain for the Rea and then there is going to be a office + retail unit.
I did find planning app ages ago, its several years old but only in last year have they really got going.
Biosonic August 20th, 2007, 10:09 AM Well, I live in the city centre so you get to see what I have ;)
Brummyboy92 August 22nd, 2007, 06:31 PM Lucky you, when you dont live in the city centre you dont get many Highrise buildings.
Erebus555 August 22nd, 2007, 06:34 PM Unless you live in Druids Heath :|
feltip September 19th, 2007, 06:59 PM It's not my area but its a good piece of plot filling.
Looking on google its an old warehouse thing being replaced by houses. More houses, more people, increasing population ;)

Brummie Nick September 21st, 2007, 01:40 PM I live in Hall Green (Birmingham) which is about half a mile down the Stratford Road to Shirley (Solihull) this area has turned from a quiet suburb 20 years ago to a busy retail area which is set to become even busier with the edition of a new town square, a Flagship Asda and a new shopping mall. The development is called ParkGate as it takes up part of Shirley park. A lot of people are upset about the loss of park land to develop this project. From looking at plans though I don't think it should encroach on the park too much.

soapbox September 21st, 2007, 02:06 PM I live in Bournville. Not much happening here, apart from the redeveloped dining block at Cadburys - though that seems to be taking an age to complete.
Nearby we have the new QE Super Hospital, redevelopment of Muirhead Tower at the University, the new Selly Oak Relief Road is about to commence, I think. Then there's the planned Sainsbury's redevelopment on the old Battery site, and the Cala student digs on Elliot Rd(?) has just gone through planning.
UHB - the QE Trust - will want to dispose of Selly Oak Hospital when the new hospital is complete. This is a big site, so it will be interesting to see what happens to it. Hopefully they will retain the best parts of the old hospital, though the suggestion is they want to clear the site completely to maximise sale value for residential dev. This is future-gazing rather than current developments though.
It's quite busy round here I guess ;)
feltip September 21st, 2007, 05:52 PM Well as I said some time ago, depending on the MOD, Selly Oak may stay as hospital but for military only. They would create Europes largest Military hospital. Not sure if they would need whole site but would be good as UHB trust hosts the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine so they would have some of the best trained doctors in the world and advanced equipment.
Who knows. We have to wait a while yet, 2011? , until all Selly Oak moved to new superhospital.
mk61 September 21st, 2007, 06:07 PM Cradley Heath bypass is pretty much complete and the new Tescos should be opening soon if not already. Nothing much else going on here except the usual identikit housing estates being thrown up all over the place.
Halesowen's new bus station and Cornbow/Asda extension are pretty well progressed. Lot of demolition work going on still - including the Cornbow MSCP being pulled apart by nibblers. Quite impressive seeing a half-eaten car park. I should have taken some pictures.
soapbox September 21st, 2007, 06:10 PM Yeah, it is a little way off, but it's an interesting, and pretty large site.
As I said, I'd like to see them keep some of the older parts, to maintain some character on the site - and to ensure anything else that goes there doesn't jar too much with its surroundings. But it would be good to see new high quality residential there - homes rather than student or buy-to-let flats. It'd also be interesting to see some offices - including perhaps some incubator units for start-ups - given this is pretty much along the A38 high-tech corridor.
