View Full Version : #028 l Chrysler Building l NEW YORK l 319m l 77fl
D-Mac October 8th, 2002, 05:25 AM Chrysler Building
New York, USA
HEIGHT: 319m/1,046 feet
FLOORS: 77 floors
COMPLETION: 1930
ARCHITECT: William Van Alen
In the summer of 1929, a "race for the sky" broke out on the island of Manhattan. Automobile tycoon Walter Chrysler battled Wall Street powerhouse Bank of Manhattan Trust Company for the title of world's tallest building in what many historians consider to be the most intense race in skyscraper history. In the spring of 1930, just when it appeared that the bank might capture the coveted title, a small crew jacked a needle-thin spire hidden in Chrysler's building through the top of the crown to claim the title of worlds tallest at 1,046 feet.
Not only was the Chrysler Building the world's tallest structure, it was also one of the most decorated office buildings in the world. Chrysler wanted "a bold structure, declaring the glories of the modern age" -- and he got it. He decorated his skyscraper with hubcaps, mudguards, and hood ornaments, just like his cars, hoping that such a distinctive building would make his car company a household name. Today, the Chrysler Building is recognized as New York City's greatest display of Art Deco, a decorative style characterized by sharp angular or zigzag surface forms and ornaments.
Only four months after the completion of the Chrysler Building, the world's tallest championship title would be claimed by a new structure, the Empire State Building.

DrumCorpsAlum October 9th, 2002, 04:47 AM 9/10. This building is outstanding. I love the touch that the gargoyle type creatures add, it makes this building, and makes it almost fantasy like.
BrianInIA October 9th, 2002, 08:17 PM 10/10 -- my favorite NYC Scraper! I love it! :)
Jasonhouse October 9th, 2002, 08:17 PM Simple THE BEST historic skyscraper. Period.
10/10 (my only 10/10 BTW)
RafflesCity October 9th, 2002, 08:20 PM 8.5/10
I like its top best and the shaft..but the base is nothing much. That said this building is really a queen.
Jasonhouse October 9th, 2002, 08:27 PM You guys have to understand that the set of zoning laws that NYC adopted in 1916 basically mandated that the bases of buildings look like that, to allow for maximum light penetration to the street below. Almost all towers from this time period had a rather "bland" looking , chunky base. Following the street contours as closely as possible was the best way to recoup what developers considered the "lost space" of setbacks. The resulting form was simply the best compromise between maximum profits (always important in highrise commerical architecture) and obeying the law.

10/10!
I can only think of about 5 skyscrapers that are 10/10 worthy, and this is one of them!
Fabian October 10th, 2002, 11:03 AM Chrysler is one of things that make me think about New York City and is fairly well designed however I don't like it's fat base and should of been a thin tower from the ground up.
8.5/10
tayser October 10th, 2002, 11:17 AM I mean, really can you fault Chrysler ? I cant ;)
10/10
only thing I dislike is that it's really boxed in (density) but eh, it's still an absolutely fantastic pinacle in among boringness (the other crud around it).

Muse October 10th, 2002, 11:21 AM My definite all-time favourite of interntional art deco talls.

Sadly a lot of other buildings have grown around it..obscuring more of it. They should have rules governing what gets built around the Chrysler.
Sunflower October 10th, 2002, 09:46 PM A classic.
9.5/10 :)
Skyscrapercitizen October 11th, 2002, 12:36 AM As one of the greatest skyscraperfans in the world I can't do anything else then give this Masterpiece of skyscraper Architecture a 10!

Liz L November 5th, 2002, 03:48 AM To those who have wondered - we might have a few modernists who dissed the Chrysler because she isn't a Meis/Corbusier box - Well, I kinda suspect she'll still be standing tall and well loved long after a lot of the modernist boxes have vanished...:D
Art Deco STILL rules!
Steven November 5th, 2002, 06:00 AM This building is more than just looks. This building once was the tallest and was competing with the ESB for that recored. This was all done during one of the greatest depressions in U.S. history. For that and its design I give it a 9.5/10
stanford November 11th, 2002, 01:28 AM i don't have any idea why this building has never appealed to me. I sort of admire it.... anyways I didn't score as high as the majority but I would never stretch that much to say it was a 3, 2, or even the person who ranked it 0....
geeezz... 0, that's just :?
CG5 November 25th, 2002, 03:24 AM Man, you gotta love the Eagle's Head gargoyles.

UrbanLandscape December 1st, 2002, 06:35 AM Correction, mlm, it is the perfect skyscraper.
SUNNI December 1st, 2002, 12:08 PM how kool are the eagle heads! are they visable from a distance?
j_brg December 1st, 2002, 06:41 PM 9.5/10
Certainly the best in the Art Deco style, and the best in New York. The roof really gets all my points be cause I just love the shape and use of metal. Nice styling throughout, though the base is too bulky, it can be forgiven because it is not their fault.
(I might be crazy but those stepped semi-circles say Romanesque to me. Forget it I am a nut.)
Liz L December 1st, 2002, 10:16 PM No, you're not, j_brg - the arch IS one thing that the Chrysler Building and romanesque buildings have in common - an echo across all those centuries...
parody24 December 11th, 2002, 08:46 AM The Chrysler Building absolutely deserves the
#1 spot. There's no other building quite like it.
ThatGuy December 13th, 2002, 08:21 AM The Chrysler Building is the standard all others strive to achieve, and in my opinion, none have reached. Simply the best skyscraper ever built. The crown makes it.......i don't have a word to describe how great it is. You know, in every movie where the skyline of New York is destroyed, this is the one building that we never fail to see, even though the crown is usually crashing down into the streets :( :( :(
And the Gargoyls are amazing. Great design feature. I would to sit on top of them someday! I saw a picture oce of someone standing on one. But then again, I am afraid of heights...
I give it a 11/10 but since the scale only went to 10 that is what I was forced to give it.
TYW December 13th, 2002, 02:56 PM 9/10
it is an awesome building
London bloke December 15th, 2002, 04:52 PM Perfect and timeless.Nothing other than a 10.

Liz L December 17th, 2002, 02:51 AM London Bloke, there are some folks who just don't like anything but modernist boxes, I think...

Black Cat December 19th, 2002, 05:14 AM 10/10
Unquestionably a true classic, as glorious today as the day it was built. This building with a few others on Manhattan should be on the UNESCO / World Heritage list!
ganjavih December 20th, 2002, 02:40 PM The best skyscraper in the world... the gold standard... period. My only 10/10.

Chi-town February 24th, 2003, 07:44 AM I'm one of the people who loves modernist boxes (Mies' Seagram Building being the supreme example), but I gave the Chrysler Building a 10. It's an absolute masterpiece.
My guess is the people giving low scores aren't the people who like elegant, minimalist towers, but Asian forumers who are pissed at the low scores that the latest plastic-looking crap in Shenzen is receiving.
I don't mean any offense to Asian skyscrapers in general, by the way- I really like the Bank of China, Jin Mao, Petronas, etc. But it seems like a lot of buildings featured here aren't anywhere near the best that Asia has to offer.
The Messiah February 25th, 2003, 06:31 PM Well it can't get any better then this!i can tell you that!
This is obviously a 10!
AtlanticaC5 March 14th, 2003, 10:01 PM Chrysler Building is New Yorks most beautiful building. Ever. 10/10 :angel1:

Since you define it that way, atleast understand that everyone's taste in art is different, skyscrapers included.
Personally I can't understand why people like to look at stone buildings, there's just no beauty in them. (from my point of view atleast. No need to attack me...)
Kevinkhoo1986 July 4th, 2003, 03:10 PM 6/10 hmmm the top isnt look nice.. i hate the design..
Hacksaw July 5th, 2003, 12:25 PM Looks a little thin to me, but considering when it was built and the height, a 9.

LOL-That certainly wasn't Chrysler's or Van Allen's intent but ok.....
Do you feel that when you see a Chrysler mini-van too?
Anyway, I don't think very much "spiritualism" was going on in the Cloud Club during prohibition.;)

ONE HUMAN October 10th, 2003, 08:10 AM Simply the best, even after all these years. The top third of the building is a thing of beauty. It's probably not perfect, but it's the closest thing to it, so I'm giving it a 10.
TPX October 12th, 2003, 06:48 AM 10!
renthefinn October 13th, 2003, 09:46 PM Definatley my favourite building, a real icon for skycraper enthusiasts.

A beautiful, breathtaking, elegant and charming structure.
A true pearl of architecture.
One of my favourite skyscrapers ever built.
Mr. Fat Jack November 12th, 2003, 07:52 PM 10/10. I only wish it could have been taller and didn't taper off from the base.

Toggie January 10th, 2004, 06:34 AM 10/10 best building in the world IMO
PHLguy January 11th, 2004, 06:06 AM very beautiful building but its so thin its very hard to see while viewing the skyline as it is dwarfed by buildings that are much shorter than it
but i gave it a 10 because of that brilliant facade and beautiful crown...truly a very elegant building...
Chrysler is the dainty queen while ESB is more ominous looking and more dominant...and a helluva lot more masculine
Trances January 11th, 2004, 11:26 AM dwarfed by buildings that are much shorter than it
Huh ?
PHLguy January 11th, 2004, 08:14 PM Trances, i meant because its so thin and dainty, buildings that are shorter just dwarf it in immense size, not height
GreatSky January 15th, 2004, 07:40 AM How did the Chrysler building FALL to number 2?

7 World Trade April 22nd, 2004, 06:35 PM chrysler's the classiest building in the world. it's about the only building that can be art deco and postmodern at the same time. simply amazing. as long as they can replace the windows on the chrome roof (i don't like how it's made with multiple glass panes) it will be absolutely perfect!
10
chrysler's crazy for not making this gem their hq

Thats the problem with most ppl. They have to bring segregation, racism whatever into everything they do. 64 ppl have voted 3 or less simply so NY wont have the top as usual... dont want to point fingers but im not an idiot it is definately a war of cultures... not as it should be a war of designs (i mean this is the most perfect building int he world after the Pantheon in athens..) No wonder we cant have world peace ppl cant even vote on this stupid forum without hate...
Ashley May 1st, 2004, 10:45 PM Who doesn't love this building?...I think the pictures are totally awsome...wow!
Jayson May 5th, 2004, 02:52 PM This building is more than just looks. This building once was the tallest and was competing with the ESB for that recored. This was all done during one of the greatest depressions in U.S. history. For that and its design I give it a 9.5/10
it was competing with 40 wall street. I gave it a 10. I would have given it a 9 because of the dirt. But i wanted to compensate the idiots that gave it a 3 or less!!!

Mr.Skyscraper July 4th, 2004, 06:34 AM 10/10
Simply the best in the world along with The Empire State, the Sears Tower and the John Hancock. The gargoyles are fascinating. I especially like the spire, which is one of the most elaborate i've ever seen.
:applause:
digili_man July 7th, 2004, 11:36 PM for me, a favourite...gave it a 9, i love its cool design on the spire of the Chrysler Building...
Gerard July 8th, 2004, 11:21 AM This is probably the most wonderfull skyscraper in the world. so 10/10.
Bronteboy July 9th, 2004, 02:45 PM Lovely, lovely building, and 10 of course. To me, the only drawback - which applies equally to ESB - is that its cross-town street location does not quite do it justice from ground-level, and one might have wished to see it built on one of the avenues or squares, say - from memory - like the Woolworths Building, an antecedent to both in a way. To me, both ESB and Chrysler have their best impacts from the bridges or a slightly long view, but C. definitely adds infinite grace to the midtown cluster.
yoyo22 July 14th, 2004, 11:06 PM 10/10
Lovely building. I like its "chunky" base, it appeals to my more practical side, it makes it feel like a real building. But what about the crown? The steel, the gracefulness. And the other decorations? And the interior? A marvel (although not my favorite in the world, way up there)
yoyo22 July 14th, 2004, 11:08 PM An a related note, my vote tied this with my other favorite building in the rankings for first.
Iiee July 14th, 2004, 11:12 PM 9.5! I love especially the top of it.
TallBox July 15th, 2004, 10:02 PM beautiful 9.5
LeCom July 22nd, 2004, 08:33 PM More like, YOU try to build a skyscraper that almost any average asshole on the streets of NY knows by name out of thousands of towers the city has (well, unless you built the ESB or the Twin Towers)...
Vlad the Great July 22nd, 2004, 10:17 PM 10/10 As close to perfect as a skyscraper can get

Singidunum July 25th, 2004, 11:41 PM This is my first post in here. And the vote is 10/10=I love this building.
Jules July 26th, 2004, 02:38 AM It's nice, but I prefer 2 Liberty place in Philadelphia and 2 Prudential Plaza in Chicago. They all have very similar designs but I just like them more. I give this an 8.
Justadude July 27th, 2004, 07:04 PM The fact that we can all sit here and (for the most part) agree that this building is STILL one of the best in the world is a testament to just how brilliant its design truly was. I suspect that, given another century or two to gain more age, this will be one of America's answers to the great historic European structures (Notre Dame, Tower Bridge, etc.).
If nothing else, it's really amazing that this tower is considered to have affected the visual arts almost as much as it affected architecture. That's truly impressive.

GetOnDaTrain October 22nd, 2004, 11:38 PM 10/10. Another NYC icon. The spire and the gargoyles give it the character of uniqueness in art-deco. ESB and Chrysler are worshipped by other buidings here. Gotta love it.
I didn't know Chrysler is not HQ'd there anymore. Did they change the name of th ebuilding at all? I hope they didn't.

sallad November 27th, 2004, 11:08 AM The Chrysler Building is my favorite building in the world. It's not the tallest or the biggest but it has something that no other building has. While it's neighbor a few blocks away--Empire State Bldg--is from the same time period and is very impressive it just doesn't quite compare. The Chrysler Bldg really is sexy and beautiful. And that top...oh my!!! Art Deco rules!
